Presented by HSBC Bank and HSBC Mortgage Corporation, all "Wednesdays on the Gorge" events begin at 6:30pm and include hands-on art workshops for children.

The eight-piece ska/swing revival collective Cherry Poppin' Daddies formed out of several groups around the University of Oregon in Eugene. Vocalist/guitarist Steve Perry (aka MC Large Drink) and bassist Dan Schmid originally played in the Jazz Greats and the Hucks, then formed Cherry Poppin' Daddies in 1989 with a lineup which gradually encompassed guitarist Jason Moss, drummer Tim Donahue, trumpeter Dana Heitman, Sean Flannery on tenor saxophone, Ian Early on alto and baritone, and keyboard player Dustin Lanker.

The group released their debut album, Ferociously Stoned, in 1990 and followed it up four years later with Rapid City Muscle Car. The Pacific Northwest was in the grips of the grunge wave during the early '90s, though, so the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' live show puzzled quite a few fans of alternative rock. By the mid-'90s, the fascination with formerly neglected musical styles (including easy listening and swing) had increased the band's prominence, along with bands like Squirrel Nut Zippers and Royal Crown Revue. After their third album, Kids on the Street, was picked up for distribution by Caroline Records, the group compiled the most swing-oriented tracks from their back catalog for release on Zoot Suit Riot.

Now in their 19th year, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies are poised for a whole new phase, starting with a brand new record, entitled Susquehanna. Named after a muddy, flood-prone river in upstate New York on which frontman Perry grew up, the album is a story of memory and time, a tale of losses, love, doubt, and fatigue. But as the end of the record approaches, there is grace and gratitude.

The evening's opening act is The Headers.

Like all of Artpark's free concert events, each evening includes a wide variety of free family-friendly hands-on art workshops, including drawing, face-painting, dress-up, self portraits and more.

The July 23 concert at Artpark is sponsored by Regional Waste Solutions.

"Wednesdays on the Gorge" is also supported by Certo Brothers Distributing Company, Modern Corporation, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission.

Artpark's Outdoor Amphitheater opens to the public at 2pm on event nights, and can be accessed via the Upper Park's Portage Road entrance off of Center Street or through South 4th Street nearest the Mainstage Theater.

Carry-ins (food and beverages) are prohibited at all of Artpark's free concert events while on-site parking is $6.

For a full schedule of 2008 events, call the Artpark Box Office at (716) 754-4375 or visit artpark.net.

The Earl W. All of Artpark's free concert events begin at 6:30pm and include hands-on art workshops for children.

The evening's opening act is another Ontarian, Toronto-born singer/songwriter Melissa McClelland. Artpark's July 15 concert event with Blue Rodeo is sponsored by Compu-Mail.
Other high-profile Canadian acts that either have, or will, grace Artpark's Gorge-bordering Outdoor Amphitheater stage this summer include David Clayton-Thomas (July 1), the Cherry Poppin' Daddies (July 23), the Sam Roberts Band (July 30) Celtic rockers Leahy (August 12), former Max Webster frontman Kim Mitchell (August 13) and songstress Sass Jordan (August 27).

Formed in Toronto in the early 1980s by frontmen Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor, Blue Rodeo's debut album, Outskirts, was an instant smash hit in Canada, selling over 200,000 copies and featuring the hits singles "Try", "Outskirts of Love" and "Day After Day." The band's 1989 follow-up, Diamond Mine, sold even better and garnered the first of several Juno Awards for the band. That same year, they appeared in the Meryl Streep film Postcards From the Edge.
The 1990s brought more success for Blue Rodeo as they made a conscientious effort to sell more records in the United States. From '90-'94, the band released a trio of albums "Casino, Lost Together and Five Days in July" which introduced several fan favorites including "Til I Am Myself Again," "Trust Yourself," "After the Rain," "5 Days in May," "Bad Timing," "Dark Angel" and "Lost Together." The event will take place on Thursday, July 3rd at 5p.m. at the original KB radio studios located at 1430 Main Street. The event will feature live music performed by members of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, appearances by WKBW alumni and a display of classic cars. The first 500 people to participate will receive a free commemorative poster that includes rare historical photos and a recreation of the original “top 40” song survey from the week of July 4, 1958.

“WKBW was not the first to play rock & roll in Buffalo, nor was it the first top 40 station in the city,” explained Forgotten Buffalo’s Marty Biniasz. “Yet when KB, with its 50,000 watt signal, changed formats on July 4, 1958 something historic happened. It signified a shift in popular culture that officially recognized the power of the post-war baby boomers. From sock hoppers to flower children, the station went on to provide the soundtrack of Buffalo for over 30 years.”

Independence Day 1958 heralded the arrival of "FutureSonic Radio," the catch-phrase given to WKBW to its brand new, fast-paced, top 40 format. Under the guidance of Program Director Dick Lawrence, KB made a drastic change in its format by virtually eliminating all previously carried programs that include the NBC network and substituting what Lawrence called, "ultra modern broadcasting techniques." The music played reflected the growing teenage middle class and featured Elvis Presley,Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson and Frankie Avalon.

Four disc jockeys, brand new to the Buffalo audience were imported from major markets to form the base for the "even newer" WKBW. Perry Allen was hired to fill the early morning 6 to 9 AM slot. Russ Syracuse was next from 9 to 2 PM. Art Roberts handled the 2 to 6 PM slot. He was followed by Dick Biondi who became a legend at night across the East Coast on the wings of WKBW’s 50,000 watt signal. Weekend and overnight disc jockeys included Jack Kelly, Danny Neaverth and Tommy Shannon.

For more on WKBW’s switch to top 40, including a list of song played on July 4th, 1958, visit www.ForgottenBuffalo.com.

The 50th Anniversary Sock Hop is sponsored by www.ForgottenBuffalo.com. The website was founded in 2004 to provide an urban explorer's guide to the Buffalo-Niagara region. Forgotten Buffalo hopes to provide visitors with an uniquely Buffalo experience by highlighting sites that have been left behind, or perhaps clandestinely left in place, providing clues as to what was there before. More than just a nostalgic trip through time, Forgotten Buffalo allows visitors to better understand why Buffalo is one of the most unique urban communities in the world.Best of WNYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12952525975022353334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193529.post-38231028931355937882008-06-27T12:47:00.001-04:002008-06-27T12:50:17.661-04:00Fourth Annual Mediterranean Festival set for July 11th -13th"Celebrating love and care for family and your heart"

St. George Antiochian Orthodox church is again celebrating heart healthy promotion of it's 4th Mediterranean Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 11th-13th on the church’s spacious grounds at 1073 Saunders Settlement Road (Route 31), a half mile east of Military Road in the Town of Lewiston.

The three-day festival continues to grow, with the addition this year of new foods such as Greek gyros and even more local entertainment, including our own Saint George dance troupe. This year the Festival offers fifty concerts in twelve venues, with a unique blend of chamber music, jazz, dance, spoken word and virtuoso heart-stopping talent. Performances of Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Brahms are offered side by side with the music of Stephen Sondheim, Argentine Tango and American spirituals. Where else can you hear the breathtaking strings of Schubert and Stravinsky in the majesty of one of Ontario's oldest Anglican churches? Or enjoy Canada's international sensation Quartetto Gelato whilst overlooking the Niagara River, plus savour the delights of world-class wines and gourmet cuisine?

Highlights of the 2008 season include: eminent pianist Anton Kuerti, master interpreter of the works of Beethoven performing his celebrated Diabelli Variations; Robert Silverman and Music Glenn Gould Avoided; an exclusive Canadian performance with Ryusuke Numajiri, pianist, composer and principal conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra; the celebrated St. Petersburg String Quartet; the hugely popular JazzAfterPlay series, with jazz veterans John Sherwood, Peter Appleyard and Juno-award winner Brandi Disterheft among others; plus a perennial audience favourite, the Young Virtuoso series. A not-to-be-missed concert is Songs of Freedom featuring the charismatic tenor Vanya Abrahams (of Showboat and Ragtime fame). Songs of Freedom is a powerful re-telling of one man's journey on the Underground Railroad to reach Niagara-on-the-Lake and freedom from slavery. Wood selected Lawrence Kinney's Spalted Device as the $2,500 grand prize recipient of the venue's first annual outdoor sculpture competition titled Edges 08 at an onstage presentation earlier this month. Kinney's winning entry is currently stationed adjacent to Artpark’s Mainstage Theater in the lower park.

The works of all eight finalists "Spalted Device" by Kinney; "Sanctuary" by Jesse Walp; "Days of Venus" by William Cavanaugh; "All in One by Brett Coppins; "Shelter From Outside Influences" by Amos Scully and Stephanie Ashenfelder; "In the Realm of the Spirit" by Kenneth Payne; "Splitting Hair" by Rolf Hoeg; and "Submission" by Adam Nowicki will be on display at various park sites through September 15. Each is delineated with signage and viewable at no cost to all park visitors.

This is another exciting example of Artpark's continued emphasis on blending all forms of the arts with nature, said Artpark President George Osborne. "It is our full intention that this will become a yearly competition featuring some of the finest artists in North America, and it will serve as a great compliment to Artpark's current visual arts programming."

LAWRENCE KINNEY
Lawrence Kinney's career in sculpture extends over 20 years and encompasses the completion of professional degrees through Munson Williams Proctor Institute (Utica, NY), and the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has participated in exhibitions in Buffalo, NY, Erie, PA, and New York City and has captured several awards for his sculpture.

Kinney was awarded a fellowship to study the art and architecture of Spain as an undergraduate. Since completing his studies, Kinney has been a regular guest lecturer at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he instructs undergraduate courses in sculpture and three-dimensional design.

As co-owner and curator of the Low Profile Gallery of Fine Arts in Utica, Kinney has produced hundreds of commercial architectural sculptures for businesses throughout the United States. He is also the sole proprietor of Sculptures and Form, and has developed a fine selection of original artist's lamps.

EDGES 08 OUTDOOR SCULPTURE COMPETITION
Artpark placed a national call for entries for Edges 08, in January. Eight of the 33 resulting submissions were selected for a summer-long exhibition (May 29-September 15) on the grounds of Artpark. Artists are permitted to sell their work(s) during the project period, but the sculpture(s) must remain on site for the duration of the exhibition.

Serving as juror of the competition was Robert L. Wood, Professor of Design and Head of the Ceramics Program at Buffalo State College. Wood has participated in over 175 juried and invitational art exhibitions at the national and regional level, and his work has garnered 12 national awards. Works selected by Wood were also approved by a selection committee comprised of Artpark's visual arts staff and park manager. Once works were installed on-site in late May, the juror selected the grand prize winner.

ARTPARK
Since 1997, Artpark & Company, a not-for-profit organization, has operated The Earl W. Brydges Artpark under a license agreement with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Over the past decade, Artpark's attendance has virtually tripled thanks to a well-rounded schedule of summer programs including musical and dance productions, big band shows, jazz performances, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tuesday and Wednesday night free concerts, working visual artists, and an abundance of children's camps and other interactive art activities. The park also features several sites of historical significance, such as the Hopewellian Indian Burial Mound, remnants of the Oak Hill Mansion and the original location of Joncaire's trading post.

For a full schedule of 2008 events, call the Artpark Box Office at (716) 754-4375 or visit artpark.net.

The Earl W. The blues society of WNY is affiliated with the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN and has been in existence for approximately sixteen years. Our purpose is to educate the public about the blues and its history, to promote blues music and to preserve it’s tradition as one of the truly great and original American art forms. Some of the ways we do this is by holding educational presentations in schools, holding a monthly amateur jam and by holding the Memphis bound contest which allows one local blues band a one solo/duo act to go to Memphis to compete on a national scale for various prizes including recording time, equipment and gigs at various blues festivals. Our quarterly magazine Bluesbeat, which was created by and is run by Rich and Sharon Schneider, is one of the most comprehensive and professional magazines of it’s kind. This year’s event features the Mark Winsick Band, JJ Moscato & Blue Avenue, Willie Haddath & Sue Kincaid Band, Cruizin Deuces, Eloise Laguerre, Jack Civaletto, Stevie B & the Rhythm Rockers, Gregg Juke Band & the Mighty No Stars, Big Tobacco,

Donna Rose & Jimmy Wozniak, Paul Ianello & Lissy K, Todd Eberwine Band, Lynn Fredericks and Shaky Ray.

Double Take Blues Band, and John Rose. Superjam is a family event and there is food and alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages available to purchase. The event is rain or shine. The admission fee for an all day pass is $12 for blues society members and $15 for non members. Brydges Artpark”, is a 150-acre New York State Park along the scenic Niagara River Gorge in the Town of Lewiston that was established by the state in 1974. Since its inception, Artpark has been a unique and renowned venue for the visual and performing arts. The park contains an indoor theater, an outdoor amphitheater, venues for artists and artisans to produce and display their works, various areas used for children’s arts activities, numerous hiking trails and other settings for wildlife recreation. It is an entertainment, educational, recreational and inspirational destination for residents and visitors to Western New York.

Details about upcoming capital improvement projects will be announced next month.

Background
During its first twenty years, Artpark received significant funding from New York State to support its acclaimed arts programs. However, funding from the state was significantly decreased, and in 1997 control of Artpark’s programs and operations was transferred to a nonprofit organization called Artpark & Company, Inc., with the state maintaining ownership.

As part of the plan to transfer control of the operations of Artpark, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation established a license agreement with Artpark & Company, Inc. Artpark & Company, Inc. is a registered not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 Arts and Education organization.

A Board of Directors controls Artpark & Company, and also directs Artpark’s management team. Over the past ten years Artpark & Company has worked within a limited budget to continue running programs with a scope and quality that has continued to foster a positive reputation in the ever-changing marketplace of the performing and visual arts world.

Artpark’s board, management team and sponsors have created an environment that has attendance and revenues increasing each season. In 2004 Artpark became the summer home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been voted as the best outdoor venue in Western New York by Buffalo Spree for two years running. Artpark is transforming itself into a nationally and internationally renowned cultural and entertainment venue and is becoming a key asset to the tourism and economic development in New York State, namely the Buffalo/Niagara region.

Artpark continues to receive committed support from the state’s Western New York Delegation and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. It receives financial support from both, as well as from various corporations and foundations.

Attendance
Under the leadership of Artpark & Company President George Osborne since 1999, park attendance reached its highest level in more than a decade with over 220,000 visitors patronizing scheduled events last summer, while another estimated 250,000 enjoyed the trails, paths, picnicking sites and fishing areas.

Estimated Event Attendance
2002: 84,000 (persons)
2003: 103,000
2004: 133,000
2005: 161,000
2006: 190,000
2007: 220,000

2008 Season
Artpark’s 2008 Season – which includes a Mainstage production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” the BPO’s residency, big band shows, weekly concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, as sculpture competition, free art activities and camps for children, a family movie night and more – gets underway on June 3.
