Her first book, Flawed By Design: The Evolution of the CIA, JCS and NSC (Stanford University Press, 1999), won the highest national dissertation award in Political Science and has become standard reading for several U.S. military and intelligence training programs. More recently, she has written about adaptation failures in the CIA and FBI, the role of presidential commissions, organizational problems in nonproliferation policy, and port security. Her most recent book, Spying Blind: The CIA, the FBI, and the Origins of 9/11 (Princeton University Press) examines why U.S. intelligence agencies adapted poorly to the rise of terrorism after the Cold War.

In honor of Veterans Day, the 4-Star Democratic Club, Citizens for Veterans' Rights and the LAX Area Democratic Club, present this forum on the issues active duty military, Reserve, Guard and military veterans face today. We will hear what it takes to win their vote from a high-profile panel of veterans and elected officials.

How do you turn key red states BLUE?

Bring 24 million votes of military service members and veterans across the country home to the Democratic Party.

With heavy military/veteran populations in many key (now) red states, winning this voter block can literally turn this next election around. For every veteran/military vote we win - we bring in at least three more (families and friends) votes.

How do Republicans manage to use the military as an election backdrop year after year? All the while, neglecting the people in uniform for expensive toys, and still claiming to be the military's best friend.

On September 18, 2006, 4 Star will host a dinner and group discussion with panelists Kevin Drum of the Washington Monthly, blog extraordinaire, and Wayne Glass, USC Professor and former Senior Defense Advisor to US Senator Jeff Bingaman (D NM), as well as member of the Congressional Budget Office's National Security Division.

The two will be leading a discussion about the directions and priorities of the United States in the current struggle against terror. The talk will be begin with the subjects raised in the recent article by James Fallows in the Atlantic Monthly Magazine which discussed our current situation vis a vis Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. Sign up for the event, we'll send you a free copy of the article (with permission by the Atlantic Magazine, of course).

The event includes a dinner buffet at Caffe Roberto's in Culver City, click here for instructions. The Pain That Follows Troops Home from Iraq War

A note from Four Star member Jessica Landry...

Sometimes, it is difficult for me to express how much saving the VA land means to veterans. This article from the Washington Post, explains, the need for the facility is greater than you can imagine.

The WLA VA currently treats 2,200 vets who served Iraq (OIF) and/or Afghanistan(OEF). There are over 11,000 of there fellow OIF/OEF veterans here this area. I can pretty much guaranty that the majority of the 11,000 are in need of VA services. More are coming home every day.

Beyond the growing need of OIF/OEF veterans all the vets from all other eras still need this facility working at full strength and capacity.

Any arguments or disagreements over what group or what person represents the local communities are petty in comparison to the need. Any non-veteran who thinks they "know" who should use the VA facility and/or how the facility should be used is ignorant of what veterans face everyday and what their real needs are; that includes many who currently run the VA.

Please forward this article on to anyone you know who has questions or concerns about the WLA VA land. Hopefully, it will clear up any misconceptions.

This is a re-post of the first entry ever on this blog. We wanted everyone to know what the Four Star Democratic Club is all about...

Inspired by great Democrats such as Presidents Woodrow Wilson and John Kennedy and presidential candidates John Kerry and General Wesley Clark, the mission of the newly formed Four Star Democratic Club of Los Angeles, chartered in May 2004, is to establish the Democratic Party as the party of national security.

This club is different, in that we will work to transform the political landscape. The club will support political leaders who embrace a sophisticated worldview and endorse a sensible foreign policy based on international cooperation. We need leaders who offer integrity and innovative solutions to the challenges facing America at home and abroad.

The club will focus on efforts to support Democratic candidates for the 2004 election, educate communities on important issues, actively support voter registration and getting out the vote. We will also seek to nurture up-and-coming Democratic leaders, reach out to U.S. veterans, encourage volunteer service, and promote the ideals and philosophy of the Democratic Party.

The Four Star Democratic Club will aim to help the Democratic Party broaden its tent and mature its views about national security.
