India Fest is a day long India cultural event, organized by the Indian community, and shared with our city. There is a Bazaar with clothing and food vendors (and more) and state booths. There are cultural activities going on all day long, from small children dancing to teens and adults dancing and singing.
The stage was full all day long with exciting talent. This is the heart of India Fest, when Indians get a chance to showcase their talents to the whole city.

Priya at the beginning of India Fest.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKkmLtvInrI/AAAAAAAAAWk/Ud3SXSgYXaA/s320/IndiaFest2008Priyaflowerrangoli.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235758024492621490" />

Priya as Rani Jhansi Lakshmi Bai, queen warrior.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKkl3VqstTI/AAAAAAAAAWc/MRVjXAqUyrI/s320/IndiaFest2008PriyaRani.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235757674434180402" />
Relaxing before her name is called.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKkjynXSBlI/AAAAAAAAAWU/cgotuchg0wE/s320/IndiaFest2008PriyaContestantWinner.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235755394261976658" />
Priya gets 2nd place...and a prize of $20.00!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKkfhyt8-nI/AAAAAAAAAWE/LLRRU26Qg8U/s320/IndiaFest2008PriyaWinner2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235750707205569138" />
Priya on stage, telling the crowd, "Mere Jhansi Khabhi Nahi Duungee", which means, "I will not give up my Jhansi".
The Queen of Jhansi "Lakshmi Bai" (now is Uttar Pradesh) was married to the King of Jhansi. They gave birth to a child, but the child died. Shortly later her husband died, and left Jhansi with no male heir. England said they would now take Jhansi, since it had no heir, and therefore felt the kingdom had fallen. Lakshmi Bai decided to adopt a son, and told England that Jhansi does have a mail heir, and England told her that adopted children do not equal heirs. England sent an army to Jhansi, to take the country (at the time was a country, not a state) and Lakshmi Bai calls upon her people, and especially the women of Jhansi, to fight the English army. They fight twice and win, but on the third time the army came, Lakshmi Bai was stabbed with a sword, leaving her bleeding to death. Her people asked her what they should do, and she instructed them to make a funeral pyre and told them to put her body on the pyre. Such a bold and horrifying act was demanded by Lakshmi Bai, because if they allowed her body to get into the hands of the English, her body would have been dragged through the streets, and many atrocities would have been done to her while she dying, and after she was dead. England won the war, but let Jhansi stand, because they were shocked to see that Queen had come out to battle.
Folklore abounds about the Rani Jhansi Lakshmi Bai story, and some say her adopted son was tied to her back when she went to war, and he survived. He became the King of Jhansi.

Priya didn't know the deepest details of this story, but she did a fair amount of research before choosing Lakshmi Bai as her character.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKkoy3XNStI/AAAAAAAAAW0/3QevUfOusPk/s320/IndiaFest2008PriyaContestant.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235760896114772690" />

Having fun after the event.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKkf6SIgGLI/AAAAAAAAAWM/ztwgd484s5c/s320/IndiaFest2008MoonbouncePriyaChloeTheo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235751127955282098" />

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-81540501423003840082008-08-13T18:00:00.003-05:002008-08-13T18:05:53.512-05:00Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar...This is an old post from last year, from another blog. I thought it was so cute, that I wanted to post it again.
The photo is of Priya eating homemade gorditas...one of our favorite Mexican foods.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKNoerduczI/AAAAAAAAAV8/G1Tkg0BZHA4/s320/000_2830.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234142068207416114" />

This morning while I was deeply sleeping, my heart skipped a beat. I sat up in the bed and listened. I heard a squeak. Then I heard pitter patter. My detective-mom skills honed in to an unmistakable sound. The clink of a cookie jar. I jumped out of my bed and ran down the hall way, very quietly. I peared around the doorway into the kitchen, and there was a mouse, who looked just like my Priya, sitting on the kitchen cabinet, eating a cookie! It was 6am.

When I breathed in, Priya jerked her little arms around and put the cookie on the cabinet and hopped down! I asked her what she was doing, and she said......"Lakshmi asked me for a cookie, so I was getting one for her". As far as I knew, Lakshmi was sound asleep, because she was in the next bed over when I woke up, eyes shut, breathing shallowly. So knowing full well that she was eating the cookie, I took her by the hand and said, "Lets go see what Lakshmi has to say about this". Lakshmi was "wide awake" sitting up in bed by now. I relayed the story that Priya told me and Lakshmi said, "No, I didn't eat a cookie!". I told Lakshmi that Priya said she got a cookie for her. I felt around on the sheets and sure enough there were cookie crums in the sheets. I asked Lakshmi where the cookie crums came from (did they fall from heaven?) and she said, "Priya raised me up and put the cookie crums under me, and I didn't know they were there (this from a SID kid!)." Then I asked her to let me see her tongue. She held her mouth shut tight and frowned at me. I told her I must inspect her mouth for cookies. She finally allowed me, and sure enough, there were peices of cookies in her mouth! LOL. I asked her how the peices of cookies got into her mouth, and she said, "Priya put the cookie crums in my mouth"! Then I asked Priya, "who really ate the cookies, you or Lakshmi". She finally admitting to eating ONE cookie. I told Lakshmi that if she didn't tell me the truth, I could count the cookies in the cookie jar and see if they were telling the truth! (I don't have any idea how many cookies are in there!) Lakshmi admitted to eating one, and then Priya said, "It was Lakshmi who actually got the cookies (remember Priya was sitting in the kitchen eating cookies when I walked in). So I told the girls to follow me to the kitchen. I got out the cookie jar and opened it, ready to count. Priya appeared at the door and said, "I only had ONE cookie". I told her that it looked like she had more, and then she said....."Mommy, there were twenty cookies in the jar, I ate one this morning, Lakshmi ate one this morning, and YOU had one yesterday. So that means only three cookies are missing". I cracked up about that one! LOL.

So while I am writing this post, I asked the girls to stand in the hallway and think about their punishment. Priya immediately said, "I want a spanking"! Lakshmi argued with her and said, "I don't want a spanking, it would hurt. I want to stand in the corner". Priya said, "but a spanking would be fast, then we could go on and play". Lakshmi said,"What does a spanking feel like?". Priya said, "I think it tingles". I am listening to this and cracking up!

Finally, they decided to come tell me that they are sorry and they won't ever do it again. I really need to remember every one of these mischevious things they do. Thankfully it is nothing like the time that Priya at age four, climbed to the top of a 7 foot china cabinet to get the sissors I hid, and proceeded to cut off all of Lakshmi's beautiful hair! Does that say anything about their "love" for each other? !!!!!

Jyotsna

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-40610473418792642512008-08-12T18:12:00.003-05:002008-08-12T18:26:32.165-05:00Having a lovely day at home...<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKIcD_nLPKI/AAAAAAAAAV0/Z7lFXOSD5lI/s320/LakshmiplayingAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233776571898870946" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKIb4F9lndI/AAAAAAAAAVs/4jDSMKYvNUQ/s320/RavigiftcardsAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233776367445056978" />
Another nice day with Ravi and Lakshmi home!

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-89264606535927271472008-08-11T18:37:00.004-05:002008-08-11T19:04:46.143-05:00Ravi and Lakshmi arrived home (6:15pm)!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKDTib6sv7I/AAAAAAAAAVk/z1AMgy7cnek/s320/000_4284.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233415355567488946" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKDTVJX4DDI/AAAAAAAAAVc/_yrAuoTI8SI/s320/KidsHomeAugust2008sunflowers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233415127251291186" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKDRyQH28tI/AAAAAAAAAVU/tiSa5qepF2c/s320/LakshmiHomeAugust2008b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233413428256109266" />
I have all three children home together for good, and they are all doing great. It
used to be 14 ounces (not much by far) and now the bag is half full, using the same sized box. I hate whenever I
get cheated. I'm not feeling very peaceful right now.
Why is this cereal so expensive? I know this is silly
but why don't they call it Sponsership Cereal, since that is what they are really doing, sponsering people in different organizations.

I thought I'd share a picture to drive my point across.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SKCUzMbLzjI/AAAAAAAAAVM/JMVqjTJpDYo/s320/PeaceCerealAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233346374234000946" />

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-53982177592280030962008-08-10T23:37:00.011-05:002008-08-11T00:51:06.600-05:00Ravi Turn's 12!!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_Cg0JlYVI/AAAAAAAAAT8/YeMgL-ZR4Ek/s320/000_4240.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233115161038250322" />
Ravi had his birthday party on August 2nd. I took several pictures, but didn't think they turned out that well. Also, Ravi was wearing clothing that looked like used womens clothing. I felt bad for him having to wear those clothes at all, but especially on a birthday, because in both American culture and Indian culture, children get new clothes to wear on their birthday.

Since he was with his dad, I thought he would wear at least semi-decent clothing on his birthday. Afterall his dad had good clothing on. Anyway, I decided to post the photos because I adore my son, and I realize this was just a temporary thing which has dad had made him do.

Birthday's are very special, and I don't want Ravi to think his birthday was any different.

First, Ravi was with me on Thursday, July 31st, which was August 1st in India. So we had a special meal and I put a candle in an icecream for Ravi to blow out. Then the photos move on to his actual birthday party. Ravi's dad had his party at the church where he attends. (yes C is a "Christian" now)

The gym space was a great place to have the party. Mostly boys were invited, but Ravi invited a girl that he likes alot too. His cousins were there, along with a few girls who were especially invited for Lakshmi and Priya to play with. That was very nice of him. The kids play all types of ball games from basketball to more. I had planned to do some activity, but I never got time to suggest anything because they played nonstop. Ravi was very happy. It was good to see him that happy.

So now for the photos...
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_P8_740QI/AAAAAAAAAUE/NNNU8aAghgY/s320/RaviBirthdayAugust2008Basketball.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233129938889527554" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_QOF0OpAI/AAAAAAAAAUM/HPtfr9nQxmc/s320/RaviBirthdayBasketballAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233130232525792258" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_QiBS_OtI/AAAAAAAAAUU/UPo_2HcbqWY/s320/RaviBirthdayFriendsAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233130574910012114" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_Q768ppCI/AAAAAAAAAUc/wOyp4m_VcQ4/s320/RaviBirthdayFriendsAugust2008a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233131019882308642" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_RSRTrrmI/AAAAAAAAAUk/9EfitTiP-UA/s320/RaviBirthdayFriendsAugust2008b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233131403841613410" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_Rq_gOCLI/AAAAAAAAAUs/gRQN3ZR7GiI/s320/RaviBirthdayFriendsAugust2008d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233131828559087794" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_SJz6lleI/AAAAAAAAAU0/oKa2S4YlOwI/s320/RaviBirthdayFriendsAugust2008e.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233132358024402402" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_SzmS_1ZI/AAAAAAAAAU8/DT6N99SRBzo/s320/RaviBirthdayGrandparentswithRaviAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233133075923195282" />

.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_TGvrUsRI/AAAAAAAAAVE/HGkcU9tIyio/s320/RaviBirthdayLakshmiMommyAugust2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233133404858659090" />

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR SON!!!!

Jyotsna

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-24877961926883154732008-08-10T23:13:00.004-05:002008-08-10T23:31:49.613-05:00Welcome Home, not yet<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ--JJp7oVI/AAAAAAAAATs/OqST8ygZjwQ/s320/WelcomeBackBalloon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233110356447699282" />

After being ready for Ravi and Lakshmi's homecoming tonight, C had Ravi put a call in to me to say they won't come until Monday night at 6pm. I thought it was pretty damn sick of C to put a child up to that.

I cleaned the house, bought chips and peach mango salsa, and had thawed out the spaghetti (with the Morningstar Veggie Crumbles) so we could have a great start off with the house at full capacity again. Just as I knew they wouldn't show up, my friend Rosemary called up and asked if we wanted company. It was perfect timing, otherwise I would have buried my head in my pillow and cried.

So we opened the chips and salsa (but I saved the spaghetti for tomarrow), and she brought a half eaten plate of brownies. I made soup and biscuits which Rosemary and I had, and it was good to have company. We did watch a bit of the olympics. Amazing!

Before Rosemary and her daughter came tonight, I put in a brick walkway from the drive way to the water hose spigot. I got tired of stepping in there at night time to water the plants, and having no idea what I was stepping on. It looks nice too. Priya rode her bike around the the drive way for a while. I usually park the car at the end of the driveway so the kids won't roll into the street accidently.
So Priya had a flat tire, and then I remembered that Lakshmi has two flat tires (and her bike is still very new). I can't figure out why these tires are flat. We don't have any glass or sharp things in the driveway. But anyway, I need to buy three tires for two bikes. I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy two new bikes? Priya's bike needs the rust removed, and a new paint job. She also needs new handle covers, and the wheels need to be sanded and repainted too. It needs so much work, yet I hate to give away a perfect fine working bike.

So, I may take on a project when the days cool down, to refurbish her bike. She wants hot pink sparkles for her color. She already has a pink helmet. She had a basket for her bike, but somehow the tabs fell off the basket. I've got to find a way to put the basket back on, then I thought I might get both girls bells for their bikes. I LOVED ringing the bell on my bike as a child. I used it instead of having a horn.

Hopefully the next time I post, I will be able to say that my oldest, and second oldest babies are home. Enjoy the photos here.

Jyotsna

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SJ_AWFFhqgI/AAAAAAAAAT0/omqqgjnL0T0/s320/000_4269.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233112777582815746" />

One of the sunflowers in our front yard, has been growing all summer, and finally taller than me. I never know what thing he will do when it concerns the kids. Anyway, he dropped them off at the pool. I keep their swimsuits and towels in the van just in case their dad will let them go. So they got changed into their swim suits and came into the water. What fun we had. Ravi hasn't been swimming for 1 year, and that was for about 30 minutes. This time I got him to float on his back, to try the dead man's float (face down) ect. He did alot of splashing around in the pool, chopping the water with his hands. I showed him how to position his arms and hands while swimming, and he nearly had it. I was very impressed that he remembered so much from the last swimming lesson, 2 years ago.

Anyway, I think if he could swim every day for one week, with me teaching him, he would be ready for a swim team. He's nearly there.

Lakshmi is still scared in the water, and she needs more play time. I did get her to hold her arms straight (like toothpicks I tell her) and lay them on the kick board and kick her legs. I had her in the middle of the pool yesterday, when she suddenly realized that she was in over her head, AND LET GO! I worked with her on minding me when we are in deep water, and just trusting me because I will always take care of her. She has such a deep fear. I think deeper than Priya's. Anyway, after about 1 hour of swimming, (and me making suggestions for her to try this or that) she finally independently bobbed in the deeper end. (not the deepest end). I was really impressed. We had alot of fun just paddling around, and I think that will go along way towards helping her to be more comfortable with the pool.

Lastly, I am slowly getting more freckles. I haven't had this many since I was a child of 8 years old myself. I can't believe I am the same milky white girl, of the past winter. I have a bit of tanning now too.

Both Ravi and Lakshmi came home with me, but Ravi wanted to go back to his dad's house, to have "alone time" with his dad. I think he expected me to say "NO" or to beg him to stay with me, and when I called his dad, he looked puzzled. But I want to make absolutely clear to Ravi that he is welcome to be here when he is staying with his dad in the summer, but when it is time to come home, he will have to come. He said he understood.

Lakshmi and I watched her new movie she got for her birthday. She got Ratatouie (sp?). Then we had dinner (Rice and tomato rasam). She had some cookies afterwards and then she was very very sleepy. Swimming makes me sleepy too.

I can't tell you how wonderful it felt inside the house last night, have had my Ravi and Lakshmi there. And this morning when I woke up, Lakshmi was still sleeping. I made biscuits and veggie sausage. It's clearly a special treat. Not something we always have. Lakshmi ate it all up.

Then before I took her back to her dad's house, she played with her Polly Pockets, then played some music for me on the piano. It was a wonderful visit, which I hope will happen again. I also hope Ravi will stay over next time too.

The photos speak for themselves.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_u2ywyKP_3xA/SIjYGbtzPUI/AAAAAAAAARw/DlbD3Vs00UM/s320/LakshmiPianoJuly242008seventyfivepercent.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226664972594134338" />

Created by Crazyprofile.com

Click Here to Advertise on My Blog

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-57559274715511990452008-07-21T16:09:00.002-05:002008-07-21T16:12:04.687-05:00Lakshmi talking as a 2 year oldWhen the kids were little, I used to have them talk into the microphone and record their sweet little voices. I paid $1.70per gallon that day! Back then it cost me around $20.00 to fill up my tank. Now it costs $47.00 to fill up my tank.
The cost has more than doubled.

I bought $5 worth of gas the other day and it was $3.92. More than $2's increase in price, and the price is steadily going up. I can't drive these days, because I can't get enough gas in my van to go anywhere. I am still kicking myself for not buying the Honda Civic Hybrid, back in 2005.
Instead I bought the Honda Oddessy van, and I can't drive the thing now.

I'm continually thinking of ways to combine trips, so I don't waste gasoline. I've got to return the kids library books, go to the grocery store, and go swimming (my daily excersise, which is now my every other day excersise while Priya is gone).

Check out Dancing Rabbit for how they deal with gasoline. And follow Fuel Gauge Report, a online daily publication of the gasoline cost by state.

Jyotsna

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-65271314990804960712008-07-21T14:06:00.002-05:002008-07-21T14:22:33.597-05:00Priya Swimming! It was a crash course of sorts, because she had a mini-vacation planned at my sister's house. They have a "swimming hole" or pond there, and it's very large, and very deep and the water is dense (can't see). So I took it upon myself to teach Priya how to swim. With gas prices, I couldn't really afford to take Priya to swimming lessons every day, so I thought back to my swimming lessons, and to the kids swimming lessons for two years in a row, from a couple of years ago.

What I determined for Priya, was that she needed to be able to show me that she could do certain things.

-bobbing (while taking a breath each time she came up)
-floating on her back
-floating on her front (dead man's float)
-kicking her legs while straight or barely bent
-demonstrating arm over ear movements to create movement
-playing a few games underwater
-swimming under water
-dog paddling

Priya amazed me. She did everything I asked her to do. She was nearly swimming 2 years ago.

She had an intense fear of swimming from way back, but whenever she took her mind off of swimming, but instead thought about playing in the water, she did well.

Last week when we first went to the pool, I was very shocked that she had seemed to have lost all of her swimming skills.
But then once I told her that she couldn't go to my sisters house (where the big pond is) without showing me she could swim and save herself, then started relearning her swim skills.

She was completely excited that she can swim now. Me too.
I'm so proud of her for overcoming her fears and just doing it.

Proud mama,
Jyotsna

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-58455308510768775332008-07-18T11:53:00.001-05:002008-07-18T11:54:15.156-05:00Priya is SWIMMING!Good morning everyone!

Priya started swimming yesterday. And she has never spent a single birthday apart from me. Then I have to go through this with Ravi too. His birthday is on August 1st, and I won't have the children until August 10th. This will be the last year this happens.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but I can't wait to hear the kids fussing and fighting again, and I'm going to love every single minute of it. Remind me later if I say anything differently.

She is eight years old now, and it is just unbelievable how much she has grown this year. She grew 1 inch, and put on 2 pounds. It doesn't sound like much, but it has made a big difference in the way she looks. first, she looks very thin. Second, she has grown taller. All of her pants from last year have been given to Priya. Priya suddenly has a drawer full of clothing, and Lakshmi needs clothes.

Anyway, I miss her and I sleep with her blanket. When she spent the night Friday night, for Priya's birthday party, she piled all of her stuffed animals up on my bed, and told me, "Mommy, if you ever miss me, just hug my babies".
She's a great kid, and I know somehow I will get this time back that has been taken away by him, and she will not suffer the misery that Ravi has been suffering all these years, at the hand of his dad.

Okay, Happy Birthday dear young lady!
Mommy

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-86793079473413412732008-07-13T14:49:00.006-05:002008-07-13T16:03:58.662-05:00Birthday Parties, back to backPriya and Lakshmi just turned 8, Priya at the end of June, and Lakshmi today! (Happy Birthday darling!)

I scheduled a party for Priya for this past Friday, and then right after that, Lakshmi's dad scheduled a party for Lakshmi the next day.

As pointed out before, Ravi and Lakshmi are with their dad for the summer visit.

So Friday evening, Priya had a birthday party and slumber party. We celebrated with cake (and dinner earlier) and her birthday passed by without our normal special notice.

I took several photos of her while having cake, cutting cake ect, but then accidently DELETED, the photos. I was sick with guilt for not having a party, then more sick with guilt for having deleted the pictures.

So we "retook" all the photos, with a half eaten cake! LOL
And I promised Priya that she would get her party.

So her party is this Friday. I had to
watch the clock, giving him 4 different types of medicines
each day, and he is still getting the eye ointment. I
have to put it in his eye for a few more days. He's
going to his dad's house, so he will have to do it then.

Ravi's eye is still bloody looking, in fact worse looking
than it was after surgery, but the doctor said that was
par for the course. Overall, he is healing, both inside
and out, and Ravi told me he doesn't have any more double
vision now. Isn't that fabulous?

He was going to swim today, but because his eye doesn't
look good enough to me, he isn't going to. It will be
some time before he can do sports, so I hope and pray
that for Ravi's sake, his dad takes things nice and slow
no matter how much Ravi feels like he can do. An injury
to his eye would set Ravi back drastically.

Lakshmi is also going with Ravi. I have never been without her for one month. I don't know how I will cope. It hurts
already to think about it, but I know when she is back home
she and I will both be very happy. Ravi is older and that
makes the visit easier on me.

Indiamommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13743441969698588715indiamommy@yahoo.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189918.post-46064812611821233632008-07-01T15:13:00.003-05:002008-07-01T17:58:08.629-05:00Free Slings and Diapers Contest!There's a cool contest at Along For The Ride, which you can compete in to get free slings. It's been a long and busy month. First of all, having not gotten the child support from the month before, I'm still struggling financially. Perhaps by this July, I will have put the financial struggle behind me. I really hope.

News about us: I somehow got sick earlier in the month, and an asthma episode lowered my immune system causing me to be suseptable to pnuemonia. I ended up in the hospital. Then I spent 5 days with my parents, with them sitting at my bedside taking care of me. My mother slept on the floor in my room the first couple of nights, and my dad sat on my bedside, spooning into my mouth, an "old fashion" cough syrup of triple sec, sorghum and lemon. I think the sorghum was the old fashion part. It really settled down my death rattle of a cough, and I and they were able to sleep at night.

Finally I was able to go home, and what a mess the house was. The kids had been pulling out all the toys, all the games, all the video's for the first two or three days I was sick, and of course there was a sink full of dishes I hadn't washed, which had to be done. My mom came home with me and helped me get the beds changed, dishes done ect. It was a relief to see the floors swept, dishes done and toys picked up. Priya helped me with that fortunately.

My mom bought my medicine, which was nearly $150. I didn't have enough money to buy it, and thank the goddess she was willing. After taking the meds, on the very last night, I threw up the last one, along with my dinner (sorry, I know it's tmi). But somehow, I have continued to get better.
It's important that I get fully well, because.....

Ravi is having surgery Monday. Ravi was born with a congenital cataract in his left eye, and his surgeries when he was three years old pretty much caused another eye condition, which happens with almost all the children who have this original surgery. He has ambliopya. That means that his muscles in his left eye are not coordinated with his muscles in his right eye. He apparently has "some" stereo vision, where the eyes work together part of the time, but other times he has this wandering left eye that when he is relaxed, you can see it lazily moving out towards the left side of his body. This surgery will line his eyes up, and stop the double vision that he has been experiencing since at least December, if not longer. Apparently it takes time to realize what your eyes are doing. At first at the end of December, Ravi told me his eyes were doing something else, but then drew a picture of it for me, and it was clear he was having double vision. The pediatric opthamologist verified it for me, and then lowered the boom...Ravi would have to have surgery.

So he is going in, on Monday morning, and I am just praying that he is lovingly cared for by the doctor.

I am working on making dishes for the week, so I will be able to keep cooking to a minimum.

Lastly, Ravi and Lakshmi are soon due to visit their dad for one month. I have never been seperated from Lakshmi for so long, and only once with Ravi. I honestly don't know how I will take it. I am already doing some crying in bed at night, just thinking of waking up each morning without my babies. Divorce is cruel.

Well, I'll post an update on Monday, to let you all know how my big guy Ravi is doing. Hopefully he will be able to see normally in as little as three days. : )

For now, I'll leave you all with a photo of Ravi, (who is nearly 12 now).
