Thank you Ben for the compliment. That is a very good question. I use three different web sites to track my rankings and measure my web site success activities. Each of them are different and have different values and measures. The one that will help you is www.spyfu.com This site is free but you can also upgrade to a paid site. It will show you how your site ranks for key words and you can track them.
The other two sites are
quantcast.com and alexa.com

Hi Thomas. Great advice. Are you aware of any good tools out there you can recommend to monitor search engine position over time? I’m working on a website at the moment and want to be able to compare the main search terms I’m optimising for on Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Most of the services online I have found seem to require you to have a Google API key (which Google no longer hands out). The Google Webmaster tools allows you to see search results for Google only leaving me in the dark about other search engines.
