A gala poetry event at the Red Brick Bistro last night, Saturday August 26, 2006, Judge Mickey Cesar announced the winners of CafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Competition. Top Honors went to Cy Street (First Place) for his poem "I Like The One Without The Dress" and DublinSteve (Honorable Mention) for his poem "The Art Of Women". Their winning poems can be read at SplashHall Poetry Forums

Cy will receive a beautiful bouquet of roses to give to his lovely wife (woman) from Allen, CEO of Kingsgate Diamonds and all top 4 poets will receive a CD collections of spoken word and music from Dave at Artvilla.

CafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Competition is a free, open to all poets on the internet poetry contest. Judges for the "Tribute To Women" competition are Witt Wittmann, editor for D-N Publishing and is Poetry Director for SplashHall Poetry Forums. Debbie "Lady SunShine" Porter, SplashHall Hostess. Belinda Subraman, publisher of Gypsy Art Mag and host of the Gypsy Art Show heard the BZoO HomeGrown Radio. Mickey Cesar, an accomplished and published poet.

Poet Judge Mickey Cesar adds, "I'd like to thank all the SplashHall contributors for their fine work in the “Tribute to Women” poetry contest, and Rg for giving me the opportunity to contribute as a judge. I was glad to see such a wide variety of approaches to the subject, which made the experience of judging a delight: there were full narratives, where poets took their impressions of the woman in the photo and ran with it; poems celebrating the qualities of all women, poems projecting into the woman herself, and poems critiquing female representation in two- dimensional terms. I believe the final four choices presented to members represented these varied approaches well.

“The Art of Women” by dublinsteve struck me for its tender, yet impersonal treatment of the subject, and its brilliant combination of the medium – a digital photo of an attractive woman, with all its attendant associations in contemporary culture – with a real woman, imaginary or not. The poem allows its readers a lot of latitude in interpretation in reaching conclusions about the subject and the poetic voice, and is a wonderful read.

The untitled poem by Chelsea is remarkable for how immediately it engages the reader. The voice is natural, sadly conversational and intimate, and only the most detached reader would not feel an emotional response to this poem; the sense of loss, the sense of squandered humanity in the final lines leave the reader wanting to step out onto the street and embrace the first stranger they meet.

“Together” by ecodelluvia wraps the reader up in a blanket – a magic carpet, if you will – and whisks them back into a lovely vision of the Arabian Nights (without all the menace and gore, of course). The imagery is strong, and word-choice admirable: “hummingbirds that feast on colorless roses” and even “chocolate covered cheese” are lines that linger long after the first read.

“i like the one without the dress” by cy street is an evocative montage which a reader mores experiences than reads. Time and place are very fluid in this poem, and each stanza is a vignette unto itself; once the reader settles in to the idea that they are being flashed through seasons and space, those crisp moments in each stanza form a meta-narrative which leaves one happily exhausted, a truly enjoyable read.

She has attended the the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education. Twas the Night before Christmas Poem

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Sanctuary ran about 6 years and Gypsy for 10 years before its resurrection in 2004. She also published many books under the VERGIN PRESS imprint including VOCES FRONTERIZAS, writings based on life on the U.S./Mexican border sponsored by the El Paso Public Library as well as THE GULF WAR: MANY PERSPECTIVES, EARTH TONES, IMAGES OF JIM MORRISON and HENRY MILLER AND MY BIG SUR DAYS.

Belinda’s own writing has grown to span a vast array of subjects, styles and publications. She has traveled in over 20 countries, lived in Europe for 6 years and was part of an East Indian family for 22 years. These cross-cultural experiences often inform her work as well as her experiences as a Registered Nurse. These days her poetry, stories, and art can be found in hundreds of journals, reviews, anthologies, books and chapbooks. Since 1994 her archives are housed at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in the Center for Southwest Research. My children's book, "Staying Back," was released in 1982. I had the distinct honor of being featured to read on stage for and with my mentor, Pulitzer-Prize-winning, Library of Congress and New Hampshire Poet Laureate, Richard Eberhart. I earned a MEd. and hours towards a PhD in Special Education Administration from the University of Florida and taught 33 years in the gifted program and special education in both Florida and Texas until my retirement this year due to multi-level spinal fusion. I was a writing consultant to the Florida Teacher Education Center, liaisons to Shands Teaching Hospital Nerology Dept., wrote grants, ESOL, Science Tech., and Gifted curricula in Florida and Texas, and taught students of all ages in private, public, and laboratory settings. Nominated five times by former students for Who's Who Among American Teachers, I loved it when they came back to visit and update me about their lives. Some claim that I made a difference. Little do they know how much I learn from them! A tenured insructor at the University of Florida Yonge Laboratory School, I moved to El Paso in 1987 with my former-husband, a keyboardist for the 62nd Army Band, an Army nurse, and veteran of Desert Storm. Raised as an Air Force brat, I have lived in all four corners of the USA and the Far East, have two artistic sons, use to breed, train, and show Irish Setters, shoot bow and muzzle-loaders, play Harmony Patrician Recurve guitar, raise bonsais, hike, camp, and newly retired commune daily with The Muse. Meet The "CafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Challenge" Judges

Meet The Judges for cafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Challenge "Red Romance Dancing". The Judge's Court consist of 3 'In House' Judges and 1 'Guest Judge'. CafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Challenge started as an in house competition for the Splashhall Poetry Community. It has been running for over 4 years. Beginning with this month's Challenge it has expand across cyberspace to include poets around the world.

The Judges score several poems written based on a current picture at the SplashChallenge page. There is usually 8 different challenges throughout the year. Each with a different theme. Poets submit poems based on current pictures, then voted on by popular vote by members of the SplashHall Poetry Community. That's the way it was. Now the submitted poems are scored by selected judges. 4 poems are chosen based on originality, theme, creativity and character. Those 4 poems are then voted by the SplashHall membership and a top poem and a honorable mention poem are awarded banners. They are also award prizes from current sponsors (see list below).

Alfred Alexander Gockel was born in Ludinghausen, Germany in 1952. From his earliest days on, he was fascinated by the magic of colors on paper. This talent and enthusiasm resulted in the release of his first art work by a German publisher at the age of 8. The bright colors and the graceful motion of his characters mark Alfred’s Red Romance II. A perfect reflection of his own outer and inner-self.

Each challenge will include a different mix of Editor's, up to three (3) judges each challenge.

How It Will Work

Judges will award 4 poems a score of 1 to 4. SplashHall Members will then vote for those 4 poems and, based on most votes, each poem will be scored 1 to 4.

Then the scores for both the Judges top (scored on merit) picks and the SplashHall Members top (popular votes) picks will be added together, creating a Top Poem (First Place) and a Runner Up (Honorable Mention). Ties, should there be any, will be broken and decided by the Judges.

Poet Sartor wins First Place with his poem Summer Blues in the Some Blues of Summer Splash Picture Poetry Challege. Poet DublinSteve got Honorable Mention for his poem Joy and Blues. Both are members of SplashHall Poetry. The Splash Picture Poetry Challenge was chosen by the SplashHall Poetry members, with a memberships of over 500.

Poets Drake wins First Place for his poem Without You and Cheryl places with Honorable Mention for her poem Left Behind Blues in the Rollin Thunder Poetry Picture Challege. Both Drake, a SplashHall Poetry Member also, and Cheryl are avid bloggers as well as poets. Rollin Thunder Poetry Challenge was chosen by the editors of Rollin Thunder Poetry.

Summer Blues

She sits alone upon ‘his’ throne
The park bench where they met
Could she but lose these summer blues
Perhaps she could forget.

Forget his look the day he took
Possession of her soul
How she had yearned for love that burned
Eager to pay loves toll.

His plan was laid her toll was paid
And then he went away
She can't refuse the summer blues
The blues are here to stay.

Joy And Blues

It was after the cold,
after the crocus, after the jonquils,
about the time to the tulips
when they first sat on the worn bench.
Warmed gently by the late spring
sun, like the ground and new growth
surrounding them, they smiled
faintly, but politely, as each read silently.

An interesting line murmured
prompted a vocal verse.
Before either noticed the shifting sun
it was summer, and they were encased
in day lilies and delphiniums, sharing
entire passages, sometimes pages,
under the blue umbrella of the season.

She loved the narcotic cadence of the words
that lolled from this tongue; he was contented
with the sounds from her lips that whisked
a melody past his ears.

But soft words,
perfectly spoken,
bonds souls in unforeseen measure.
Those not seeking the grail
can fall to the sweet whispers
of joy and blues.

He left her a note that started simply:
Dear Friend,

Without You

Sunrays raining down on me
Givin' sweat to hide my tears.
Hidden, muted melodies
Lost behind the years
That I had without you.

Heat risin' from the streets
No sweet breeze comes my way.
Summer won't be my friend
It's loneliness everyday
That I have without you.

And I don't care if the gardens grow,
For no seeds I will sow.
Like you, the flowers will only die in the end.

And I don't want to carry on,
But still I will move along.
And wait for my winter to take me to you, my friend.

And no drink will end these dreams
Still I have one with a cigarette.
No blue sky behind those clouds
Only disappointment and the regret
That I live without you.

And still I live without you.

A sleazy serenade.

Dancing to the beat

A diff’rent kinda heat.

Come back home
And melt me in the shade,

When you’re a
