Senator Helms was a man who didn’t try to be popular or appreciated by the politically correct crowd. He firmly believed in fighting the tyranny of communism and socialism, believed that taxes should be low and moral character should be high, and spoke from his heart and not from cards prepared by a roomful of consultants. He was rare in the political world in that he knew what he believed and why he believed it and focused on keeping his course close to his compass rather than drifting with prevailing winds of thought.

Today, we join with Americans across the country who salute this dedicated Christian gentleman and conservative icon, Senator Jesse Helms.

More on Jesse Helms:
Pro-Life Advocates Mourn the Death of North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-life advocates across the country are morning the death of Jesse Helms, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina who was frequently the top pro-life spokesman during his tenure in Congress. David O’Steen, the executive director of National Right to Life, told LifeNews.com that Helms was “a great pro-life champion and one of the earliest pro-life leaders in the U.S. Senate.” O’Steen added: “Senator Helms was a man of great political courage who always stood up and spoke out for the unborn child. While he was a tenacious and courageous political giant in the Senate chamber, he was personally a very humble man, thoughtful, kind, soft-spoken, and friend to everyone he met. Countless children are alive today because of his efforts to help mothers and their unborn children. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the pro-life movement, but we are comforted by knowing that this man of great faith has gone to his eternal reward. Our sympathies and thoughts are with his family today.”

The Dallas Morning News
Billy Graham reacts:

"Jesse Helms, my friend and long-time senator from my home state of North Carolina, was a man of consistent conviction to conservative ideals and courage to faithfully serve God and country based on principle, not popularity or politics.
In the tradition of Presidents Jefferson, Adams and Monroe -- who also passed on July 4th -- it is fitting that such a patriot who fought for free markets and free people would die on Independence Day. Let me make it clear to you, our beliefs are being attacked and we need to fight back and do the right thing.

If we lose ground this fall, I can promise you that your taxes will be higher and that traditional marriage, the second amendment and the sanctity of life will all be under attack. If we lose the Presidency and more seats in Congress, we will feel the effects for generations to come as Senator Obama will nominate activist judges whose values are far from ours. We cannot rest on our laurels this year, we need to act now.

Radical groups have been working overtime courting voters and demonizing our ideas in an organized, well funded effort to empower a Democrat President, Democrat House and a Democrat Senate in the hopes of remaking the country. We cannot let that happen.

As Chairman of Huck PAC, I have set a financial goal of being able to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to conservative candidates across the country in an effort to COUNTER AND STOP these radical groups. We need your help to do this.

I believe the Democrats' ideas are totally wrong for America and many of their plans would take us the opposite direction from where I think we need to go.

Take Senator Obama for example, he is an ardent supporter for the most liberal and indefensible positions on abortion, including his refusal to support a ban on the most vile forms of all, partial birth abortion. He has stated that he would be an activist in seeking to push for what the anti-life forces euphemistically call "reproductive rights."

His plan to raise taxes would be an economic disaster for our nation. We would lose jobs and investment and see the economy really squeeze the working class with even higher fuel and food prices.

He would implement more government control on everything from health care to small business and that's not the right direction for us.

That is not the kind of leadership we need in Washington and if combined with a Democrat House and Senate majority working hand in glove, we can expect a radical attempt to alter the composition of our courts and implement a radical, anti-family, BIG government agenda through Congress.

Today I ask that you make a contribution of $10 or more online. We will invest your contribution directly into our candidate support efforts to counter the Democrats and do so in the most cost effective manner.

My goal for the end of June is to raise an additional $18,601 online.

On Friday I sent an email to a small group of individuals that have never made a contribution before in support of our efforts. We received over 340 first time contributions in less than 72 hours.

Are there 300 individuals today that will match their support? Are there 600?

We need YOUR support to continue our vision for a better America. Any setback that we incur this fall will do irreparable damage to the cause. Please consider contributing $10 or more online immediately.

I cannot thank you enough for your continued dedication to our cause.

Fighting for our shared values,

Mike Huckabee

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145626548099407925.post-89823188586166901152008-06-17T12:35:00.004-04:002008-06-17T12:45:49.436-04:00This Week's Featured Candidate, Bob Clegg

Governor Mike Huckabee endorses Bob Clegg

Today Bob Clegg enjoys a successful career, a wonderful family and a public service record to be proud of. But how he got here is a tale of tough days, hard work, big dreams and a stint in the school of hard-knocks. Quite simply, Bob Clegg has enjoyed the American Dream and today he is working to see that everyone has the opportunity to achieve what he has.

Born in Massachusetts, Bob’s parents struggled daily to provide for him and his 6 brothers and sister. Through them, he learned early that every job done with pride is an honorable job, and he began delivering newspapers, working as a shoe shine boy and, in high school, working in maintenance at a Nursing Home.

His family moved to New Hampshire. After graduating High School in Nashua and being unable to afford higher education, Bob went to work in the construction industry taking work wherever he could find it and building himself up to eventually own his own construction company, as well as other small businesses.

Bob has always felt it was important to be a good member of the community and that in order to be such you have to give back what you have been given...and a little bit more. He began volunteering his time and talents to various organizations and causes in his hometown of Hudson where he has served as: town councilor, selectman, member of the Budget Committee, Building Board of Appeals, Economic Development Committee, and Charter Study Committee. In 1993, the Hudson Chamber of Commerce recognized Bob as its Citizen of the Year. He also has been recognized by Hudson Post #48 for his work on behalf of veterans.

During his four terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives Bob served in several leadership positions including Speaker Pro Tempore, Assistant Majority Leader and Majority Caucus Whip. He has been named Legislator of the Year by the National Republican Legislators Association, and Home Builders & Remodelers Association of New Hampshire.

In 2002, Bob was elected to represent District 14 in the New Hampshire State Senate. He has been a leader, working on some of the most difficult issues facing our state including the budget, education funding and energy. He has also served as Majority Leader of the New Hampshire Senate.

Through all the recognition by colleagues, professional organizations and industry groups, Bob has always kept his attention on why he is where he is: to serve the people of his community his district and all New Hampshire.

Bob is a member of the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) and a Board member of the USPCA Foundation. He is past President of the Hudson Taxpayers Association, Chairman of the State Building Code Review Board and a member of the Masons.

He and his wife, Priscilla, have been married for 34 years. They reside in Hudson and have two grown children, Jeff and Jessica. He also enjoys a close extended family including his former exchange student Teresa and her daughter Sydney, who live in Mozambique.

Committees Served / Positions Held / Awards Given

Hudson Town Council

Hudson Selectman (2001-02)

Hudson Budget Committee Member

Building Board of Appeals

Chamber of Commerce, Citizen of the Year (1993)

Masons

House Labor, Industrial & Rehabilitations Committee

House Election Law

House Rules Committee

House Caucus Whip (1999)

House Assistant Majority Leader (2000)

Speaker Pro Tempore (2001-2002)

Charter Study Committee

National Republican Legislators Association (Legislator of the Year 2000)

Senate Majority Leader (2003-2006)

Senate Capitol Budget Committee (Chair)

Senate Judiciary Committee (Vice Chair)

Senate Transportation Committee

Senate Ways & Means Committee (Vice Chair)

Senate Rules Committee

Senate Interstate Cooperation Committee

Senate Finance Committee

NH Grange

Wattanick Grange #327 (Comm. A knowledgeable source says an announcement is expected soon.

Other cable channels had been pursuing Huckabee, who provided commentary on MSNBC during one of its primary-night broadcasts. Fox has given a platform to such former Republican politicos as Newt Gingrich and Karl Rove.

Huckabee honed his broadcasting skills during his years as a Baptist minister, and his underfunded White House campaign relied heavily on TV appearances, from his constant calls to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to his stint playing air hockey with Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert. But, first a little background: I am a Huckabee supporter from Campaign Day One and soon joined forces with Lisa Camp, who formed one of the earliest blogs – MA4Huckabee. I was blogging behind-the-scenes from NH events prior to our first-in-nation primary. It was during this time that Gov. Huckabee, our campaign staff and volunteers all formed a special relationship here in NH. Having him back was like a family reunion.

Seeing Gov. Huckabee arrive this last Sunday afternoon was like, well, it was déjà vu - all over again. Our welcoming gift was a thermometer on the century mark – a lot hotter than his Little Rock. He starts off by claiming that he almost didn't make it here to Nashua.. At Logan airport, according to Mike, "My plane was forced into a corkscrew landing and we had to exit the plane under sniper fire". OK, that's Huckabee humor all right, but knowing how militantly liberal Boston is, I almost bought the story - hook, line and sinker.

So, here's our local headline: “Mike Huckabee plays Nashua Sky Lounge Sunday Night with local band – The Classics.” Don't get me wrong, it is a great show. There are smooth bass guitar accompaniments on Mustang Sally, Jailhouse Rock, he does a little comedy, and to spice up the show, he’s always available to deliver an occasional Heimlich maneuver to a choking patron. (Republicans only, please) But Mike, is this the best gig your new talent agency could book? After all, you’ve done Leno.

No, in all seriousness, the Governor came back to the Granite State to rally support for State Senator Bob Clegg in his bid to be the next US House Representative for NH 2nd District. Bob has served as NH Leadership Chair for Gov. Huckabee’s presidential campaign. His son Jeff, a professional videographer, has shot untold hours of Huckabee campaign events – many of which you readers have seen. It was my pleasure to get to know them both personally during our presidential campaign.

Bob Clegg, simply put, is a can-do, no-nonsense man. He has lived the American dream. Born one of seven kids in a very poor home, he worked his way up from shoeshine boy at city hall (where he learned his first politics) all the way to owning his own successful business. He put his two children through college - an advantage he never had. Bob’s entrance into politics began when, as a young businessman, he complained to state legislators about an onerous law. He was told in no uncertain terms “Kid, if you think you can do a better job, then why don’t you get elected and you change it”.

Well, he took their advice and has now served 14 years in the legislature - 8 years in the House, ending as Speaker, followed by 6 years in the Senate, being chosen as Majority Leader in his first year!

Mike Huckabee told our enthusiastic crowd that “I came up here out of a sense of genuine conviction. Bob Clegg is the kind of person I wish we had more of in Congress. He’s got the reputation for not being the kind of guy who can easily be pushed over. He is a strong pro-life, pro-family candidate who doesn’t need to read the latest poll numbers to see what he believes today. His compass points true north.”

On Monday morning, Sen. Clegg and Gov. Huckabee joined with supporters for a rally in front of the State House in Concord. A sidebar story here - about a hundred middle school kids on a field trip were exiting the State House, when I took it upon myself to ask one of the teachers if their group would like to meet Gov. Huckabee and Sen. Clegg. The kids were awestruck while the Governor spoke to them on the importance of getting involved in your government.

We all then entered the State House with Sen. Clegg to file his candidacy papers. (It was another déjà vu moment, having been here last year with Gov. Huckabee for his filing.) Our entourage was cordially greeted by NH Gov John Lynch. We then proceeded to the signing ceremony, followed by a media opportunity. Clegg for Congress is now official!!

Bob Clegg’s campaign epitomizes to me the purpose and spirit of Huck PAC. It’s about the empowerment of ’We the People’. Reflecting back on the campaign, where I was involved in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, I am still amazed at the number of supporters I met who had never before in their life been involved in politics. Many of us were depressed when we figured out the math that Mike Huckabee would not be the nominee. But after a little grieving, a new reality sets in - a movement has been formed. I am not in denial. This is the beginning - not the end. We defied conventional wisdom. We made political history. We were outspent 15 to 1, but our message trumped their money. We are not going away. Mike Huckabee, and his steadfast stand on principles, makes me proud to be an American. (Even if it’s not for the first time in my life)

Our mission statement says it best. "Huck PAC will be innovative and will fight every step of the way for the candidates we support. Hard work wins elections and the principles we are fighting for are far too important not to give our all." If you think you ain't got a dog in this NH fight, think again. You don’t have to live in his district for him to vote your principles in Washington. Mike Huckabee supports Bob Clegg 1000%. Let's get off the sidelines and into the game here. Please visit Bob’s website, listen to his radio ad and donate to help us get it on the air.
Click for Bob Clegg's website--->>> [ HERE]

PS - With no crowds around, as we were leaving the State House, we came upon a relic phone booth by the back door. The Governor reached across me to see if there was any change in it. “Just a childhood habit”, he quipped and we laughed.

Don’t second guess his ingrained fiscal conservatism!

Pictures From New Hampshire

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145626548099407925.post-17928404418291187262008-06-10T11:34:00.003-04:002008-06-10T11:48:47.822-04:00Huckabee In New Hampshire, On The Trail For Clegg

Ex-GOP hopeful gives advice on Obama on visit to back Clegg

By KEVIN LANDRIGAN, Staff Writer

klandrigan@nashuatelegraph.com

BEDFORD – Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee cautioned Republican activists Monday against trying to demonize Democratic nominee-to-be Sen. Barack Obama."I think we will make a huge mistake if we try to demonize Barack Obama,'' Huckabee said in remarks to the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women's Lilac Luncheon crowd at the CR Sparks Conference Center.

Huckabee, a 2008 Republican presidential candidate, commended Obama as the first African-American poised to win the presidential nomination of either major party."I am grateful for Barack Obama and his magnificent climb and the journey he has made, but again I will tell you he has gone far enough this year because ultimately this election is not going to be about something symbolic, it had better be about something substantive,'' Huckabee added as he toured New Hampshire in support of state Sen. Bob Clegg, R-Hudson, who filed to run for U.S. representative Monday.

Huckabee compared Obama's early voter-appeal to the experience of spotting a new car in the showroom and then meeting with the sales manager about buying it."When you got to the showroom, the car is really appealing, it's got that new car smell and all the bells and whistles,'' Huckabee began."Then you've got to sit down and decide, can I afford the payments. I think when people start looking at what Obama is saying, the very last thing they need, in this tough economy, is more tax burden on their families and their future.''

Huckabee returned to the state Sunday, five months to the day since he finished a respectable third place in the first-in-the-nation primary.A strong N.H. primary win helped propel Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona to the nomination, and Huckabee reminded the crowd that he didn't attack McCain during the primary battle."Quite frankly, I am one person who doesn't have to take back anything I said publicly and privately,'' Huckabee said."John McCain is an honorable man who has principled convictions and knows how to stand behind them.''Huckabee remains on a relatively long list of potential running mates for McCain.

Supporters say Huckabee can help deliver a strong turnout of fiscal and social conservatives as a former Baptist minister and five-term governor with a disarming sense of humor.Huckabee had come to campaign Sunday and Monday for Clegg, who spent months volunteering on Huckabee's presidential campaign."This isn't just an obligatory pronouncement just because he is supporting me, I am supporting him,'' Huckabee said of Clegg."I think he's got the kind of integrity we need in Washington. I know he's going to stand up for what he believes in.''Huckabee brought his bass guitar to a campaign rally for Clegg in Nashua on Sunday night and accompanied Clegg in filing for the office with Secretary of State Bill Gardner on Monday morning.

Huckabee's rock band was a fixture on the campaign trail here and in other early voting states.Clegg turned down Huckabee's offer to hop on stage and jam with him. "I haven't picked up my guitar in 25 years. I wasn't going to get caught trying to do that,'' Clegg quipped.Clegg did adopt one of Huckabee's presidential planks in this race – a call to replace the federal income tax code with a national sales tax of about 23 percent."If you can afford a Lamborghini, you can afford a 23 percent tax on it,'' Clegg said.

**Masschusetts for Huckabee suggests that you visit Bob Clegg's website and make a donation to his campaign, [HERE]. Bob Clegg is a fantastic candidate for congress, who campaigned extensively for Governor Huckabee when he was running for President.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145626548099407925.post-51466505826885686272008-06-07T22:12:00.011-04:002008-06-07T22:46:16.150-04:00Mike Huckabee Performes Life Saving Acth/t to Tina at Ordinary Degrees Of Moderation And Sanity Blog

Huckabee helps choking NC candidate with Heimlich

From WRAL.com

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee did more than just give a speech at the North Carolina Republican Party convention. The evening will mark the third in a series of community outreach and promotional concerts in support of “Music Plates”, a Music Aid Northwest Washington State specialty license plate project to fund music programs in schools. The event will also serve as the launching point for the Music Plates website at www.musicplates.org.

The headliner for the evening will be the former governor of Arkansas and former 2008 presidential primary contender Mike Huckabee. When asked why a politician, and why Huckabee, Music Aid Northwest (MAN) President Bob Tomberg was quick to point out that MAN is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the event is not political in nature. However, he also noted the license plate endeavor will require legislative approval, as well as collecting 3500 signatures and raising $35,000 in Washington State Department of Licensing start-up fees before lawmakers will even consider the proposal. Signature sheets are available for download at www.musicplates.org.

According to Tomberg, “As Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee successfully passed legislation guaranteeing a music and art education for all students. We hope to see the same thing happen here in Washington.” In 2007, Huckabee was presented with the Music for Life Award by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) for his commitment to music education.

Tomberg said, "Our goal in holding this event is to bring people from all walks of life together to make music. It’s truly going to be a cross-cultural event with national politicians, international rock stars, students, as well as journeyman musicians, melding their talents to promote music education in the schools. We are grateful that Mr. Huckabee has agreed to support our project." Tomberg is the guitarist and manager of the pop/rock band Shelley and the Curves. He is also a dentist with a private practice in Bellevue.

Huckabee has been playing bass since he was 12. He is so convinced about the benefits of music, he doesn’t think he would have made it to governor had it not been for music in his life.

According to Huckabee, “Music students do better at math, language studies, every other field of studies and they are better equipped for life. Music teaches the discipline to study and helps students gain self-confidence and learn about teamwork as they realize every piece of the band is important. Music kept me focused and provided me with the disciplines to be a successful governor. It’s something I’m very passionate about. It’s terrific that Music Aid Northwest is championing this cause in Washington State. I’m happy to endorse their efforts and I’m looking forward to an awesome event,” he said.

Huckabee formed his own rock band in 1996 called Capitol Offense. In addition to a line up of resident youth musicians, Huckabee will be joined on stage at the Redmond Teen Center by Tomberg; Alan White, MAN board member, best known for his legendary drumming for Yes, as well as his work with former Beatles, George Harrison and John Lennon; Shelly Tomberg, MAN board member, lead singer for Shelly and the Curves; Reek Havok, MAN board member, known for his pioneering work in electronic percussion and studio electronics, he will spin a mix of progressive house music on deck with recent University of Washington grad and Seattle club DJ Dave Airborne. He talked in part about how the Web has transformed politics, moving power out of the hands of the wealthy, how Fred Thompson killed his candidacy, how South Carolina was the turning point, how Republican ideology has been hijacked by a new-style fiscally irresponsible and un-American version of libertarianism and how the evangelical vote is up for grabs this fall. Here's a partial, summarized transcript of the Q&A.

How are you doing after the election and the primary season?

Almost as busy as I was during the campaign [doing a lot of speaking on behalf of candidates for the House and Senate and for Sen. John McCain]. Then also, [I have] been working on my future, on what I'm going to do, and some of that involves writing a book that will come out in November."

What's the book about?

I have to kind of keep it very general. The publisher wants me to keep things very mysterious for now, but essentially it'll be a book on the overall direction of American and where it's headed.... I'm also looking at some media opportunities that I'm trying to nail down ... I'm certainly not lacking for something to do."

Why do you believe you lost to John McCain, other than money?

He got more votes than me! If you do an analysis of the election, if we had played by the rules of the Democrats, I would have won, and if the Democrats have played by the rules of the Republicans, Hillary would have won this long ago.

If you look at the process, and I'm not bitter about and it's nothing that I'm complaining about. It is what it is. But the Republicans had a front-loaded system with winner-take-all states, and the front-load was largely states that were states that are not Republican states, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California. They were winner-take-all states, but they were big states and delegate-rich. Those were the states John McCain plays very well in. I've won the states in the South. I won Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia and Arkansas...

But those were all proportionate states. So I won them, but I didn't get all the delegates. But if you had taken that whole system and reversed it, it would have been a very different outcome.

[The January 19 South Carolina primary was a turning point in the campaign.] Fred Thompson's presence took votes from me. We would have won by 10 points had Fred not been in the race. We would have won handily in South Carolina, but because the conservative vote split, in essence, three ways, and even though I had more than Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney combined, the fact is, their presence kept me from the two points I needed to beat John McCain in South Carolina. [He lost 29.9 percent to McCain's 33.2 percent.]

[Even after winning New Hampshire, McCain] had said that if he lost South Carolina, he was quitting. Instead, he won South Carolina, and so he goes on to get the nomination. We barely missed it in South Carolina and then we had some conservative talk show hosts that kept saying we were pulling out of Florida, which was not true. I was in Florida every day, and that hurt us... We never could recover because by that point the media had already decided how the outcome was, and you couldn't overcome it.

We knew there was still a chance, but the problem was, it was a perception issue we had to overcome. It's not unlike what Hillary's facing today. Whether she likes it or not, the perception is that it's over for her. She can argue that she could take it to the convention. I could argue the same thing. The convention is where the process really does happen. But once every day, the media pounds it in that the elections over, then at some point it becomes this self-fulfilling prophecy... if every day for weeks on end, the people of Ohio or Wisconsin or Texas or Rhode Island are told that it really doesn't matter how they vote, it's already done, then first of all, some of the people just don't even bother to go vote, and others don't want to vote if they don't think they're going to win, so they go vote for whoever everybody says is going to be the winner. There's just a certain psychology about that.

Up until the very end, though, the people who were really with us, were fanatically loyal to us. It was incredible. [There were record crowds at Huckabee rallies right on through the March 4 Texas primary/caucus, after which he dropped out of the race.]

We had incredible support from people, most of whom had never been involved in politics before. We did not get the establishment Republican support, but what we did get was a whole new breed of people who had never been involved, and for the first time, decided to plug in. [Half of Huckabee donors had never given to a political campaign before.] MORE [HERE]

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145626548099407925.post-76857108617288246362008-05-23T06:39:00.002-04:002008-05-23T06:42:48.151-04:00Mike Huckabee Wins Important Online VP Poll

CQ TODAY ONLINE NEWS
May 22, 2008 – 12:55 p.m.

CQ Politics VP Madness: And the Winner is.....
<udrdocument documentid="2882234">
By Greg Giroux, CQ Staff

The polls have closed, the votes have been tallied, and it’s a landslide: CQ Politics readers think Arizona Sen. John McCain should pick former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as his vice-presidential running mate.

Huckabee was the winner of CQ Politics’ inaugural “VP Madness,” a college basketball-style tournament that whittled a field of 32 potential McCain running mates that were selected by CQ Politics editors and reporters. Visitors to CQ Politics could vote once in each of five single-elimination rounds spread out over three weeks. The voting ended Wednesday at noon.

Huckabee, who was a McCain rival for the presidency before endorsing him in early March, crushed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in the final round, 72 percent to 27 percent. Some blogs even promoted the selection of Huckabee and Palin.

Huckabee has signaled his willingness to share a ballot with McCain: “There’s no one I would rather be on a ticket with than John McCain ,” Huckabee said on NBC’s Meet the Press program last Sunday.

Huckabee’s backers have touted his executive experience — he served more than a decade (1996-2007) as governor of Arkansas. He’s articulate and likeable, and he campaigned respectfully against McCain and eschewed scorched-earth tactics. McCain has made it clear that he’s looking for a much younger ticket-mate, and Huckabee will turn 53 a few days before McCain turns 72. Huckabee’s social-issue conservatism could help McCain assuage some activists on the political right hold about the independent-minded Arizonan.

Huckabee’s social-issue conservatism could be a minus, though, if McCain and his advisers think that selecting Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister, could turn off political independents. The Club for Growth, a group that emphasizes tax cuts, restraint in spending and free trade, has described Huckabee’s fiscal record as “mixed, at best.” And the quick-quipping Huckabee had to apologize for making a joke at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting about someone trying to shoot Obama.

Other Republicans who performed well in the VP Madness were Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty , who lost to Huckabee in one semifinal, and Rob Portman, a former Ohio congressman (1993-2005) and former Bush administration trade and budget official who lost to Palin in the other semifinal.

Meanwhile, the real vice-presidential vetting process has begun. At least two of the final eight choices in VP Madness — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist — plan to meet with McCain this weekend at his Arizona home, according to press reports. So will former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney , a former McCain rival for the presidency who lost in the second round.

McCain’s campaign is describing the meetings more as social visits and less as auditions for potential running mates. McCain will select a candidate before the Republican convention in St. Paul the first week of September.

Stay tuned for the Democratic version of “VP Madness” in the coming days or weeks — or whenever the Democrats settle on a nominee. Feel free to use the comments section to opine on who you think that McCain and the Democratic nominee should — or will — select as their running mates.
</udrdocument>

Interested in more content from CQ Today? Request a Free Trial

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145626548099407925.post-5191717547259670462008-05-22T23:09:00.006-04:002008-05-22T23:27:31.870-04:00Huckabee Picks Anniversary Trip Over McCain AZ BBQ
The Huckabee's, Hope, Arkansas, May 1974.

Governor Huckabee made the right choice in putting his wife and their anniversary as his first priority. John McCain will be meeting with several potential running mates this weekend at his ranch in picturesque Sedona, Arizona . Those on the rumored short-list who are attending McCain’s barbecue include Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindal,OMB Director Rob Portman and former opponent Gov.Mitt Romney. However, there had been a few notable exceptions to the list of BBQ attendees and possible veeps, like former AR Gov Mike Huckabee, who was one of the last standing rivals against McCain during the GOP primary season . Since first reported, several pro-Huckabee websites have been theorizing, and lamenting over the omission. So did Huck not make the cut for the much ballyhooed BBQ?

Fear not Huck supporters, says Sarah Huckabee, daughter and former high-ranking campaign aide for the Iowa caucus winner. Huckabee was in fact invited, she says.

Huckabee, along with a few others said to be considered by McCain for the GOP ticket , including Minnesota Gov.Tim Pawlenty, and NC Sen. That held true Saturday when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee stopped in Purcellville to deliver the commencement address to the college's seventh graduating class.

Employing his trademark humor and strong dose of Baptist ministry, Huckabee urged the 63 graduates of the classical Christian liberal arts college to use their experience at the school to make a difference in the world-promoting strong moral values, self governance and adherence to the Golden Rule.

The nation's founding fathers, Huckabee said, would be appalled by the size of the federal government. The excess of government regulation and bureaucracy, he said, is caused by the failure of citizens to follow a strong moral code and to treat others as they would want to be treated.

Huckabee also urged students to focus on the next challenge ahead of them rather than trying to correct past missteps. He told the class of his training for a governors' bobsled challenge in Utah before the Winter Olympic games when a young instructor advised him to simply "steer for the curve ahead," noting that nothing could be done to change the performance on the path behind.

Huckabee recounted his experiences on the campaign trail as the southern governor emerged as a national champion of the Republican Party's conservative wing. In talks with reporters after the ceremony, Huckabee said that he continues to campaign in support of Sen. John McCain, the party's presumptive nominee, but said there have been no formal talks about the possibility of joining the ticket as a vice presidential nominee.

The college emphasizes coursework and internships in government service, journalism, history, literature and liberal arts. Students from 44 states attend the college. After seeing our niece graduate from Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday, Janet went to Hope to visit her Mother. After church on Sunday, we had a great visit with country singer Josh Turner, his wife Jennifer and their 19th month old son Hampton, and Jennifer’s mother. We had gotten to know Josh during the campaign and not only love his music, but especially love he and his wife’s authentic faith and personal character. In an entertainment business filled with uncontrolled lifestyles and egos, Josh Turner is a wonderful example of an incredibly talented man who hasn’t forgotten where he came from and what is important to him. He is just a refreshing voice in music. Josh was on a bill with megastar Carrie Underwood and we went to the show. It was terrific. Being a musician, I couldn’t help but spend most of my time watching the bass players in each of the truly amazing bands---I was probably the only person in Alltel arena who mostly watched the bass players! Carrie had been the musical guest the night I was on Saturday Night Live, so I had the opportunity to meet her and her band that night. I truly admire and appreciate talent and even more, I admire people who take their talent and work incredibly hard to polish it to the point of performance perfection. Many fans think these guys just get on stage and play well—what they don’t see is the sacrifices of time and rehearsal that take it to a true art form.

On another note, I was very disturbed by a column by Robert Novak that quoted some “anonymous source” in saying that while I strongly supported Senator McCain, I thought that maybe America “deserves Obama,” as if to say that I secretly hoped he won.

Where do people dream up this stuff? Forget the “anonymous” sources—there’s nothing anonymous about my stand and here it is. We don’t “deserve” Obama—we DESERVE a President with the character, convictions, experience, and wisdom to see the problems we face and try to lead us to solve them. We deserve a President who truly loves this country and from whom there is no doubt as to his respect for Faith, Family, and the kind of Freedom that those before us have given their lives to pass on to us. John McCain meets that criteria and that’s why I am campaigning for him and not hoping for Obama. The nonsense that I want Obama to win this year so I can run in 2012 is absurd. I love my country more than my own ambition. So let the record and truth be clear. And let the “anonymous” sources either show the courage to stand up and be accountable for their comments or shut up and leave commentary to people who aren’t afraid of their own shadow.

I hope you have a great week. I will be doing some commentary Tuesday night on MSNBC’s coverage of the election and later in the week will be speaking to a health conference in St. Louis, the national NRA convention, the graduation exercises at Hope High School in Hope, Arkansas where Janet and I graduated 35 years ago, and then Saturday, I’ll be the commencement speaker at Patrick Henry College in Virginia. Somewhere in the midst of that, I will be writing more on the book that comes out this fall—and I still hope you’ll share YOUR stories of the campaign with me.

God bless, keep the faith, and pray for America!

First NameLast NameAmount$20.08$50$75$100$250$500$1500$2300

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8145626548099407925.post-30710041745691080682008-05-09T18:55:00.004-04:002008-05-09T19:01:36.142-04:00Catching Up With Mike Huckabee

by Mike Huckabee

Send to a friend

I’ve been traveling almost as much as during the campaign. I’ve been campaigning for Senator McCain and for candidates for Congress, Governor, and Senate. I’m doing a lot of speaking and meeting some great Americans along the way. This week, I had the opportunity to speak at an event for an amazing pro-life group based in Missouri, Vitae Caring Foundation. Vitae is Latin for “life: and this organization raises funds to produce and present some of the most effective ads for the pro life cause I’ve ever seen. They have been at this for 15 years and have been able to have a real impact in helping young women to choose life. I will doing future events with them in coming months. I spoke for the Wiregrass Children’s Home in Dothan, Alabama recently. This very special home takes in children whose families are in crisis and provides them with shelter, safety, and a loving environment with a Christian atmosphere. I spoke for a Diabetes conference in Washington, D. C. to push for a greater awareness of prevention and disease management.

Of course, you may have heard that I’m working on a book that will be released November 17 that will not only detail many of the moments along the campaign trail, but puts forth how we can and must repair the “conservative brand” in this country. I think you’ll likely see yourself in this book. I’d love to have you send your favorite story from the campaign that helps show how ordinary people made the great sacrifices to make the effort one of the most surprising and interesting in the election.

Janet and the family are doing well. Everyone is trying to adjust to life “after the campaign.” Janet is back working for the Red Cross after taking a leave to be on the campaign trail full time. She has had her hands full with the aftermath of the tornadoes that ripped through the state lately and will start a new assignment soon working with military families. The “boys” Jet, Sonic, and Toby, are doing well, but wish we were home more. We do too! We will be taking a few days off for our 34th wedding anniversary which we observe May 25. Hard to believe it’s been that long! John Mark, our oldest, is in California trying to break into screenwriting; our son David is back at his job in Little Rock working with banks servicing mortgages, daughter in law Lauren is reviewing options to put her law degree and experience from the campaign to work (she now is truly an expert on ballot access and election law after doing that for the campaign), and daughter Sarah is working with Huck PAC, setting up events and working with candidates we are supporting.

We love keeping up with the larger “family” we came to know during the campaign and are preparing to make major improvements in the website with more updates, more material, and more forums.

God bless you guys!

****Huck PAC can sure use your donations, click [HERE] to contribute.

Huck PAC is founded on the principles that make America great: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Huckabee Rangers made calls on behalf of the campaign and raised money. The final statistics: $1.1 million raised and incredibly over 450,000 voter contact calls made by Ranger Volunteers. Incredible stuff.

My Huck PAC is the Ranger program reborn. We have lots of new features we plan on adding but no matter what we do, the success of this program depends on the individuals that are a part of our team.

To sign up today click here

http://feeds.feedburner.com/MassachusettsForMikeHuckabee
Massachusetts For Mike Huckabeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02660439413705688676noreply@blogger.com
