With apologies to Al Gore (not really), here are some "inconvenient truths" with respect to the situation in the Middle East and the overall War on Terror:
1. Iran has no need of nuclear energy. It has all the oil it could possibly use, and then some. The only rationale for acquiring nuclear energy and especially enrichment facilities is to provide the world's number-one terrorist-supporting state with nuclear weapons. This must be avoided at all costs. At ALL costs.
2. Negotiating with Iran serves no useful purpose. They are stalling for time so they, like North Korea before them, can field nuclear weapons. Time is on their side, not ours.
3. The United Nations is worthless. But we all knew that. Moreover, the organization has cast its sympathies with Hezbollah, Iran and the enemies of the United States. Remember the Oil for Food Scandal. The UN already had a presence along the Israeli-Lebanese border and all it did was provide Hezbollah cover for its unprecedented build up and its kidnapping of Israeli soldiers. Don't even bother with the UN.
4. Old Europe is worthless. They have no stomach for military action of any kind. Hell, the French won't even defend Paris against marauding Muslim teenagers. They will not be at our side when needed, even thought they themselves would be at more immediate risk of Iranian nuclear blackmail, given their proximity. We need to cut off the Euros and go this thing alone... with our only real ally that is willing to put boots--and bombs--on the ground: Israel.
5. Numbers three and four above mean that diplomacy won't work. That leaves the military option as our only choice. That, or wait around until Iran gets nukes and uses them on us or provides them to one of their terrorist surrogates to do so. With Israel in the fray already and the Muslim world--including Iraq--siding against the United States, we have nothing more to lose and everything to gain from allying openly with Israel and striking a decisive blow against the Islamofascists. Iran and Syria must be taken out of the equation.
6. The United States has a lot on its plate already, with our military strained over Iraq deployments. All the more reason to side with a battle-tested, tough ally now, while the fight is already on. Strained though we may be, we must be prepared to pay any price to defend our nation against all but certain nuclear blackmail from Iran and, in my view, the eventual certainty of an Iranian supplied nuke going off in an American city. Call up all the reserves, if we must. Revive the draft, even. Risk impeachment of President Bush. ANY price is acceptable other than the alternative. All the politicians--Republicans, Democrats, tough guys like Newt Gingrich--avoid this inescapable bottom line. The time for nuance and innuendo is past. We know what we need to do. Now, we must do it.
7. The Arab Street is overrated. We outgun them and could, if we wish, destroy the entire Middle East with a massive nuclear strike. We must remember that we hold the strong cards. Iran and Syria must fall, along with their Hezbollah surrogates. Then, we will have to turn our attention toward the spiritual and philosophical center of all Islamic terror: Saudi Arabia. The Saudis still fuel the fires of radical Islam with their madrassas and textbooks, which are paragons of intolerance. They must change, one way or the other.
8. Accomplishing the above will send a strong message to North Korea: Get your act together now or face the same medicine.
The War on Terror could last 50 or 100 years or it could be over in 5 or 10, if we are but willing to take these necessary steps. Our future depends upon it.

Ummmm... does this comment sound suspiciously like a recognition that some instances may warrant profiling? Dunn then added, "However, random police searches of people without any suspicion of wrongdoing are contrary to our most basic constitutional values. This is a very troubling announcement."Most rational observers would agree: where there is zero suspicion of wrongdoing or intent of same, the police should leave us alone. But that is not what we are talking about here. Dunn apparently sees as more "troubling" than an attack the potential that the identification of a bomb-carrying terrorist in the midst of subway riders might actually require recognizing, instead of disregarding, objective evidence that would either generate or support a valid police suspicion."

Federal report questions roving checkpoints in Tucson sector

"A congressional ban on permanent checkpoints in the Tucson sector is hurting the U.S. Border Patrol's effectiveness along most of Arizona's border with Mexico, according to a federal report.
A nine-month study by the Government Accountability Office released Friday said that by one measure, the effectiveness of checkpoints in the Tucson sector had fallen by 77 percent since fiscal 2001.

That year, rules went into effect that a checkpoint had to be moved at least once a week.

Tucson is the only one of nine Border Patrol sectors in the Southwest that is forced to rely only on roving checkpoints.

Stretched across 261 miles of border, authorities say the Tucson sector is the nation's main corridor for illegal immigrants to cross into the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security said the study supported its view that permanent checkpoints are needed in all sectors.

U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., cited portions of the report that he said showed the superiority of mobile traffic stops.

Kolbe, an 11-term congressman, has long argued that the flexibility and surprise provided by the portable roadblocks make them more effective than fixed installations.

At Kolbe's urging, congressional appropriations bills since 1999 have prohibited building permanent checkpoints in the Tucson sector.

Current rules require moving a checkpoint after no more than two weeks, on average.

The eight other Southwestern sectors have 33 permanent checkpoints and most of them are supplemented by mobile traffic stops set up on back roads.

The Tucson sector had more than twice as many apprehensions - nearly 492,000 - as any other sector in the fiscal year that ended last September but many of the arrests were not made at checkpoints.

David Aguilar, former head of the Tucson sector and now the Border Patrol's national chief, has said that the lack of permanent checkpoints has hampered agents and a combination of permanent and temporary checkpoints would be ideal.

The GOA report was requested by the House Committee on Homeland Security in an attempt to measure the effectiveness of stopping illegal immigrants as well as preventing smuggling and securing the border against terrorists. "

Join the crowd, Mohave Republicans! You’re the latest GOP organization to officially express displeasure with Arizona’s senior U.S. Senator, John McCain. That makes four Republican organizations – all at the county, district or state level – to express strong disapproval of McCain’s left-leaning representation in Washington, D.C.

The Mohave County GOP has passed a “Resolution of Displeasure over the Grievous Actions of Senator John McCain.”

The other organizations taking public exception to McCain include the Arizona Republican Assembly (ARA), GOP Legislative District 11 and the Maricopa County GOP. Due the ARA’s unanimous June censure of McCain, presidential hopeful George Allen, a U.S. senator from Virginia, has reneged on his commitment to speak at the September national convention of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, in Scottsdale.

Mohave County Republicans, in their resolution, expressed disapproval of McCain over the senator’s roles in constitutionally-challenged campaign finance reform legislation, over his attempt to close down gun shows, opposing oil drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve, introducing amnesty legislation, opposing a constitutional marriage amendment, consorting with Democrats and undermining the Republican strategy to change cloture rules for filibusters.

Only under extreme circumstances will the Mohave County Republicans support a McCain presidential candidacy in 2008.

The resolution was signed by Gary Watson, Mohave County Republican Central Committee chairman. It will be forwarded to Congressman Trent Franks, Arizona Republican Party Chairman Matt Salmon and U.S. Senator Jon Kyl.

The resolution follows in its entirety:

RESOLUTION OF DISPLEASURE OVER THE GRIEVOUS ACTIONS OF
SENATOR JOHN MC CAIN

WHEREAS, Senator McCain has allied himself with the extreme left-wing Democratic billionaire George Soros to attack our First and Second Amendment rights through his Campaign Finance Reform and his attempt to close down gun shows;

WHEREAS, Senator McCain has done great harm to our national defense and economy by twice voting against drilling in the Alaskan Oil Reserves;

WHEREAS, Senator McCain is opposed to amending the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman as stated in the Federal Marriage Amendment Act;

WHEREAS, Senator McCain has repeatedly sought to weaken Republican strength by siding with liberals to lead the attack on Republican initiatives by:

Leading the derailment of Republican strategy to end the filibuster of Presidential, Judicial and Ambassadorial appointments, thereby undermining his own Republican leadership; and,

Aligning himself with liberal Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy to introduce another immigration amnesty program for illegal aliens, thus ignoring the cries of the vast majority of residents from his own State of Arizona to take strong action to stop the invasion of the United States.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Republican Precinct Committeemen of Mohave County, do hereby express our displeasure with Senator John McCain for undermining the conservative mandate of the 2004 election and his betrayal of the trust Republican voters placed in him.

We further state that only under extremely extraordinary circumstances will we support the candidacy of Senator McCain for President of the United States.

We urge other Republican organizations to likewise convey their displeasure to Senator McCain over his grievous actions.
