Now, after a hurricane has destroyed most of the town, new evidence appears that frees the man Nell sent to jail for the crime.

Nell is married to the current police chief, who was also the detective who helped but this man in jail. Now Nell decides something happened twenty years ago that resulted in the wrong man going to jail, and she won't be happy until she knows what happens. She is convinced that her husband knew about the cover-up.

While this is going on, Nell's daughter comes home from college. She was kicked out for poor academics, even though she used to get really good grades. Her daughter's father is the man who was killed so long ago. The daughter, Norah, is acting like something is wrong. Like she knows something that Nell doesn't. To make matters worse, Norah has been hanging out with the man her mother sent to jail. Although he was committed for a murder he didn't commit, that doesn't mean he is a good guy.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I haven't read anything by this author, so I can't compare to his other work, but this book was good. I still enjoyed the story and riding along with the characters as the truth unfolded.

new author/mystery/304 pgs
Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-42535809116495412192008-07-01T08:50:00.002-05:002008-07-01T08:58:03.173-05:00June 2008 Reads
Fun June Facts

Total books read: 8

New Authors: 5

Mystery: 6

Non-Fiction: 0

Fiction: 2

DNF: 0

Audio: 0

Number of pages: 2425

Shake Down by Joel Goldman

Armageddon in Retrospect by Kurt Vonnegut

Crazy Fool Kills Five by Gwen Freeman

Bound by Sally Gunning

Murder by the Glass by Michele Scott

Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris

Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Spying in High Heels by Gemma Halliday
Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-42416668145710802672008-06-30T20:28:00.000-05:002008-07-01T08:47:40.136-05:00Spying in High Heels by Gemma Halliday

This is the 1st in the series.

Maddie Springer shows up at her boyfriends work, his law office, for their lunch date. But then I never do. haha! It's better to have more than I need than to run out! (like I did in Italy - do you know how hard it is to find english books in Italy? Very hard!!!)

I read three and about half of a fourth. Not bad! I would have read more in the car, but was too busy looking at the mountains and for bears. ok, fine, and sometimes sleeping. haha!

I reviewed the three I read already, so see my other posts.

For those who are interested, here's a link to some photo's I took. I was nice to you, I only posted 69 of the photo's I took - and I swear I took 300 (maybe more!).

Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-40298223440589196552008-06-30T13:04:00.002-05:002008-06-30T13:15:51.657-05:00Storm Front by Jim Butcher

This is the 1st in the series.

Harry Dresdon is a wizard. Recently her husband started to try and be a wizard.

So Harry agrees to see what he can find. In the meantime, he is a contact with the police. Karrin Murphy calls him and wants him to come view a crime scene. She is pretty sure a wizard was to blame. When Harry gets there, he finds that the hearts of both victims have been forced from their bodies, and yes, a wizard did it.

Harry must help figure out the crimes and find the missing husband. However..it looks more and more like the two are connected. Plus, somebody is out to destroy Harry, so just one more thing he has to worry about.

I have been meaning to read this series for a really long time. I'm not sure what took me so long! I loved it! Harry is such a great character. It's not set in stone, and there's even one book that I'll be bringing that I can't remember the title of (a co-worker told me that I HAD to read it and made me borrow it. haha!)

**updated the list on 06/20 - I looked last night at what I had set aside, put some back, ended up with 8 books for 7 days! haha! So I put another back. Right now I have 7 books picked out. Who knows if I'll decide to stick with that many or not**

Candy Apple Red by Nancy Bush
Storm Front by Jim Butcher
Spying in High Heels by Gemma Halliday
Murder by the Glass by Michele Scott
Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris
Guilty Pleasures by Barbara Bretton
Wifey by Judy Blume

Hmm...I know I had a larger set of books put aside.....for the life of me I can't remember which ones! haha! So....those listed above have a 90% chance of making it into the suitcase.

You'll just have to wait until I get back and post the reviews.Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-49591695596694428022008-06-17T15:59:00.002-05:002008-06-17T16:15:52.093-05:00Getting ready for vacation.....The hardest thing about getting ready to go on vacation is...which books do I take? and....how many?

I'll be gone for a week. I have a ton of books I need to get through, but most are hardback! I don't want to have to take hardbacks with me. So now I have to figure out which books to bring that aren't heavy and I can hide in my suitcase. Oh yes, I said hide. See, hubby and I usually try to get away with only taking one suite case if the trip is going to be a week or shorter. I usually walk into the bedroom with an armful of books to pack and he gives me a dirty look. I'm not allowed to bring all those books because there isn't any room! So I usually put a few aside, and "hide" the rest in the suitcase. haha!

I plan to go through my challenge lists and try to find a lot of those books (since most books are still in boxes from moving). If they are mass market paperback, they will probably make it into the bag. Hardbacks won't make it. Trade paperbacks are a possibility, just depends on how thick they are. I also like to try and take books that were given to me and might not be in the best of condition, and I never take books that are signed.

So..stay tuned...I'll post the list I plan to take soon.Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-64262263529028934302008-06-13T12:55:00.002-05:002008-06-13T13:07:01.000-05:00Bound by Sally Gunning

This is the story of Alice. That's all I'm going to say, is Wow!

Nah, not going to let you off that easy. I just really really liked this book. It is the first I have read by the author, but wont' be the last. I really liked Alice. At times I wanted to shake her and tell her to wise up...but at other times I felt for her because she didn't know what to do and was just so confused and overwhelmed. I liked the other two main characters, the Widow and Mr. Freeman. I really recommend this book, to those who like historical fiction and even those who don't.

new author/fiction/ 304 pgs
Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-24016335599522491072008-06-10T14:30:00.005-05:002008-06-29T09:11:03.290-05:00Crazy Fool Kills Five by Gwen Freeman

This is the 2nd in the series.

Fifi Cutter was fired from her job and now does free lance work investigating insurance claims. The story starts off with her investigating a guy for work comp fraud. Then she gets involved with a high profile case the firm is working on. Evidently she did something right, because somebody is after her. The only problem, she doesn't know why.

She hopes all will be ok once the trial is over, but that's not the case. She knows some of the people behind the crime, but hasn't put all the clues together.

This book was a good read. It started off kinda weird for me. I think that might have been an issue of going from a serious book, to a book that is more fun. Once I got in the groove of this book, I really liked it. It reminds me of the style of Janet Evanovich's Plum series. It's quirky and fun.

I really like Fifi. She is a very unique individual. She says what she wants, most of the time. She doesn't always do things by the book, but she usually means well. Her half brother Bosco is currently living with her and is also a very unique character. When the car Fifi has been borrowing needs to be returned, he figures out how to get a replacement car. Only the car can only go about 45 miles an hour and the brakes don't work very well. haha!

This book has also been reviewed by:

Books Love Me

Have you reviewed this book on your blog? Most of them take place in Dresden, Germany. The stories are pretty quick reads. I enjoyed all of them. I'm not going to actually talk about each story and tell you what it's about, because that would take up a lot of your time. There were some that made more sense than others. There were some that stuck out as more enjoyable than others.

I will admit that I have only read one other book by Vonnegut, that was Slaughter-House Five. (Boy have my reviews improved!). Anyway, I really enjoyed reading that one and was glad I finally did. So, I admit that I was asked if I wanted a review copy of Armageddon in Retrospect and I said sure! While I enjoyed reading Slaughterhouse-Five, and would like to read more of his work, it's something that I would just keep putting off. However, if I'm asked to review it...that book gets moved towards the top of my TBR pile.

So, back to the review. I really enjoyed these stories. This book was different for me because while I have read short story collections in the past, it's not something I normally do. I tend to shy away from them. Why, I have no idea. However I think this book was read pretty fast because I didn't want to stop reading a story in the middle of it, I prefer to finish the story and then stop before beginning the first one.

If you have read Vonnegut before and enjoyed it, then pick up this one. I would guess that you would enjoy this one too. If you haven't read him before, I still recommend this book. He needs to hide it from his team and boss at the FBI though.

One night while watching surveillance on a local drug dealers house, the lights go out at the house and he hears gun shots. He gets his team to the house and they find the drug dealer and some of his "friends" killed. His girlfriend and child are also murdered. While outside the house, Jack has one of his shakes. He still feels like this is his case and with the help of a local police man, he investigates the case on his own. Things get heated up when another local drug dealer is murdered. This causes the kids and adults in her village in Mexico to shy away from her and not accept her. They feel it is the Devil's work. When Jamilet's mother dies, Jamilet heads to LA to find her Aunt. She is in hopes that a Dr. will be able to remove her birthmark.

While in LA she gets a job at a mental institution where her only job is to look after Senor Peregrino. She loses her false documents and when Senor Peregrino finds them, he refuses to give them back until she listens to her story.

So, he tells her his story about going on a pilgrimage in Spain and finding (then losing) the love of his life.

While he tells her his story, they form a bond.

I can't say enough about this story. I was sucked in from the very beginning. I wanted to know what would happen with Jamilet and a boy she likes, will she ever show him her birthmark and how will he react? How will Senor Peregrino's story end up? I couldn't wait to get to the end and figure out how the story ended, yet now that I am done, I'm sad that there isn't more of the story to read. She tracks down stories and clues with the help of her sister-in-law Mary.

This was an interesting book. While I really enjoyed it, it was a little weird. Jean ends up solving several mysteries in her pursuit to find one murderer. This is ok...it's just that it was a little confusing. There are also several references to past murders she has solved, yet this is the first in the series. That confused me because I kept thinking there were other books in the series that I missed. I love photography books, so when I was asked to review this one, I jumped at the chance.

This book shows pictures of St. Louis from the different time periods. Starting in the late 1800's and stopping in the mid 1900's. I'm not that familiar with the city of St. Louis as I probably should be, I've always lived in the suburbs. So this was very interesting for me. I got to see the city in the different time periods. It was fun to see the horses and trolleys in St. Louis, since of course now it is all cars. It was fun to see the different buildings and the way the city grew.

Each picture had a caption telling you what you were seeing. The book was also divided for the different time periods and there was always a page describing the time period and major things that happened in St. Louis during that time.

I was disappointed there weren't more pictures of the city during the depression and WWII. However, I loved the rest of the book. It was fun to see the pictures of my home town as it grew. She loves to dance, but doesn't have the opportunity to take dance lessons. One day she receives a package. This is a big surprise since she has no idea who her parents are and isn't aware of any relatives. The package includes a book to teach yourself ballet and some stockings.

Inside the book is a riddle. The first clue is: First you must find me. Hmm...that seems rather hard. Then, when Daphne puts on the stockings, she realizes that they change color to match whatever color her legs currently are (ie - they will match other stockings she has on!).

Then, luck comes to Daphne. Even though she is 13, Daphne is adopted by a wonderful family. The Mom and Dad already one one son who is older than Daphne. She joins the son's performance act and becomes their dancer. She soon realizes that while she wearing the stockings, she can do anything she wants to do. She becomes a wonderful dancer!

She is able to follow her dreams of being up on stage and performing in a real ballet. However, will her fame and the magic stockings go to her head?

Overall, good book. I think being older, it was a little "young" for me however I still enjoyed it. I think younger crowds would really like it. I liked how we get a girl who has nothing...goes to having fame and anything and letting it go to her head...then drops back down to reality again. I love to read mysteries, and also like movies that are mysteries or adventures.
Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-15294831760192194132008-05-20T13:47:00.002-05:002008-06-06T11:28:59.457-05:00Goodby BookclubIt was a decision I have struggled with for about the past year. Should I continue to run my bookclub (in person - not an internet one) or pull out?

See, the problem is, it's not a large group, and barely anybody participates on a regular basis. I had trouble getting people to nominate books, vote in the polls for books or when meetings would need to be changed and show up for the meetings.

I admit, I'm not perfect. In fact, due to working on our kitchen, I didn't make it last month. Then, I'm out of town for the May meeting and the June meeting. So, that's three months in a row that I couldn't make it. However, I admit that unless I'm on vacation, I am almost always at the meeting. But anyway....

So, I made the decision yesterday. I sent an email to the group letting them know and asking somebody to contact me if they are willing to take over the group. I doubt anybody will though...it can be a lot of work.

So, goodbye bookclub. I enjoyed it while it lasted. I read some great books I wouldn't normally read. In fact, thanks to the bookclub I now enjoy memoirs. Who would have thought?Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17182023445485838169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136628.post-51653517532290692712008-05-19T09:45:00.004-05:002008-05-19T10:06:51.743-05:00The Curious Child by Donni Floyd

This book is for the younger age group, amazon lists the age group as 9-12. I think it could be younger than that.

This is the story of a boy who lives in a small village. The boy asks a ton of questions. So much in fact, that the other villages decide he needs to go ask the dragon who lives on the mount for a spell so he stops asking so many questions.

What the villagers don't know is that the dragon has turned mean and instead of helping the boy, he wants to destroy him. The only way to keep the dragon from eating the boy is to ask questions.

So the goal if this book is to encourage children to ask questions and not be afraid to ask so many.

Overall, I think it was a cute story. I don't currently have kids of my own to test out the book on them, but I might test it on my nephew. I like the illustrations although I wish more of them were in color. I did get offered this book for review, which is why I'm reading one that is for such a young age group. I think kids would like this story.

**if you have reviewed this on your blog, leave a comment and let me know!
