Massachusetts Governor Announces Court Nominations and they include a Temple LLM student

Governor Patrick today announced the nomination of Margaret R. Guzman to the Dudley District Court, Leilah A. Keamy to the Worcester Probate and Family Court, and Angel Kelley Brown to the Brockton District Court. Kelley Brown is a graduate of Colgate University (B.A.), Temple University School of Law (LL.M. in Trial Advocacy), and Georgetown University School of Law (J.D.), and is a resident of Brockton. She is
slated to fill the vacancy on the Brockton District Court created by the retirement of the Honorable David G. Nagle, Jr.

Edward Ohlbaum, a professor of law at Temple University, was quoted recently in a May1st Republican and Herald article. He spoke about the prosecution's pace during the trial as well as the points needed to prove self-defense.

Trial team wins Capitol Invitational; takes quarter-finals in NTC.

This past weekend, Temple's National Trial Team won the inaugural Capitol City Challenge Tournament hosted by American University's Washington College of Law. In its championship run, the team defeated nine other teams, including one from Georgetown Law School in the final round. The case involved a charge of kidnapping, supported and refuted by psychiatric and psychological testimony. The team consisted of Tim Collier, Krissy Gibbons, Chris Rees and Mike Zabel and was coached by Marissa Bluestine, Esq. and Shaina Jones, Esq.

A second team took quarter- finalist honors in the National Trial Competition sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament field included the winners and runners-up from the competition's 14 regional contests held in February. The team of Priya De Souza and Jeff Goodman were coached by Alex Gosfield, Esq., Elizabeth Lippy, Esq. and James Zoll.

Trial Team Takes Finalist Honors

This past weekend, Temple's National Trial Team took finalist honors in the National Ethics Trial Competition hosted by the University of Pacific's McGeorge Law School in Sacramento, CA. The team of Rochelle Keyhan, Corey Osborn, Matt Quigg and Jen Riley defeated sixteen teams through four rounds before losing a hard fought and closely scored final contest to a team from Georgetown Law School. The team was coached by Eileen Monaghan, Esq. and Mia Roberts, Esq.

Trial Team Wins Regionals - 21 times in a row

This past weekend, Temple's National Trial Team successfully defended its Region III championship title of the National Trial Competition at the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia. It was Temple's 21st consecutive regional championship. The members of the championship team are Priya DeSouza (3L) and Jeff Goodman (2L). Temple defeated teams from Dickinson, Duquesne, Penn, Rutgers-Newark, Seton Hall, Villanova, West Virginia, Widener-Delaware, and Widener-Harrisburg. Jeff Goodman won the John J. Scott Memorial Plaque as Best Advocate in the Final Round.

In the double bracketed competition, a second team of Tanasha Bennett (2L), Amanda Dougherty (2L) and Rahul Munshi (3L) finished as regional semi-finalists, losing a close contest to Dickinson.

The Team travels to Texas on March 25 to compete for the National Trial Championship against the twenty-four winners and runners-up from the twelve other regional contests. Temple has won the NTC national championship three times and finished second three times in the last fourteen years. The teams are coached by Alex Gosfield, Esq. (Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP), Elizabeth Lippy, Esq. (Rubin, Glickman, Steinberg & Gifford), James Zoll (Montgomery County District Attorney's Office).

The tournament was sponsored by Temple's LL.M. in Trial Advocacy Alumni Association, directed by Professor Barbara Ashcroft, Director of LL.M. Program and administrated by Mary Beth Wilson.

Veteran lawyer launches bid

Read Les Stewart's article (Lebanon Daily News)on trial lawyer John Kelsey's candidacy for judge of the Lebanon County Court of Common Pleas.

Kelsey, a 35-year veteran of the Lebanon County court system, is seeking the seat created by the retirement of former President Judge Robert J. Eby.

Kelsey attended Duke University and graduated from Trinity University in 1970 and from the University of Texas law school in 1973. He has practiced law in Lebanon ever since.

Kelsey said he is the only lawyer in Lebanon County and one of only a few hundred nationwide to have earned the graduate law degree of Master of Laws in Trial Advocacy, which he received in 1998 from Temple University School
of Law.

A memoir written by a Temple Law Professor

Last month Professor David Kairys discussed his new book, Philadelphia Freedom,
Memoir of a Civil Rights Lawyer. The book is Professor Kairys'
personal and inspiring account of his quest for achieving social justice
during the turbulent 1960s and 70s.

Prof. Kairys began as a public defender - and was not yet a member of the
bar - when he took up the cause of James Jiles, an escapee from a chain
gang who was facing extradition to Georgia. Kairys' victory in the
case was only the beginning. In 1971, he and David Rudovsky opened
a private practice that focused on civil rights cases, especially police
brutality.

When a group of Catholic antiwar activists broke into a draft-board
office in nearby Camden, New Jersey, Kairys defended the “Camden 28,” a
case that drew national attention. He convinced an FBI informant to
testify for the defense that the informant and the FBI provided the
plans, tools, and funding, including groceries, to make the raid
happen. The resulting acquittal inspired Supreme Court justice
William Brennan to describe the trial as “one of the great trials of the
twentieth century.”

Philadelphia Freedom includes many such high-profile cases,
including a free-speech suit brought by Dr. Benjamin Spock that went to
the Supreme Court. The book is earning the praise of the trade

Temple Law Professor and the Mary Jane Fonder case

Edward Ohlbaum, a Temple University law professor and director of the law school's Trial Advocacy and Clinical Legal Education department, was interviewed in the October 20th issue of the Morning Call. He spoke with Robert Orenstein about the Mary Jane Fonder case.

Ms. Fonder is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon in the Jan. 23 shooting death of Rhonda Smith in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Springfield. Police said Fonder was jealous because Smith, who was 42 and lived in Hellertown, received attention from church pastor the Rev. Gregory Shreaves, but they noted that Smith and Shreaves did not have a relationship.
