I will not be accepting any more dogs in the near future until the baby arrives and we get settled in here. I will still be able to adopt dogs out of their own homes if needed but that is the most I can do at this time. The dogs listed under "available dogs" are still available and require homes.<br />If anyone can volunteer with the help of the upcoming litter of pups by stopping in and cleaning the pup area, taking mom out for a walk, cuddling pups once they are older - please contact me.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-4210643239224327597?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-84687223072941951482008-11-17T12:46:00.002-04:002008-11-17T12:52:07.707-04:00FUNDRAISERWE ARE HAVING A FUNDRAISER. He spent his last summer swimming almost daily which is what he loved to do. He went for his last swim last night at rainbow haven and seeing him in his glory, brought profound sadness to my heart. Why? because when he was swimming or hiking he was happy but the rest of his day was filled with anxiety. His anxiety was present when I brought him home at 4mos. old. I went to the home to pick him up and he was hiding behind his mom scared to come out.<br /><br />He quickly attached to me and had separation anxiety which was calmed only by sitting in the front window waiting for my return. Before my rescue, before my hubby, before my second daughter and before our other three dogs joined our family it was just Me, Rae and Jasper. We hiked everyday and Jasper loved to explore the woods trying to catch something - namely squirrels. I would like to say he never caught one but one day on our walk a squirrel fell from the tree and landed on the ground directly in front of Jasper. He could not believe his luck and from that point forward, if he passed that tree he would stop as if waiting for another squirrel to drop.<br /><br />He tolerated every dog that came into our home. I can't say he played with any of them because Jasper was more of a momma's boy. He just wanted to be beside me at all costs. Once he was settled by my side, he was content. Last year we realized that Jasper was having some eye trouble because he would occassionally run into things mostly other dogs when we were hiking.<br /><br />When we brought him in to be tested we were shocked to discover he was blind. The back of his eyes let go and there was nothing that we could do to fix his vision. This explained his increased anxiety and his increased need to protect his "toys" from the other dogs. He was not happy and he was worried most of the time.<br /><br />We gave him time, hoping he would adjust and amazingly he could get around so well no one could tell he was blind. He seemed to improve somewhat but recently he again appeared more agitated and guarded his "things" even more diligently. My daughter went to give him a treat one day and he mistakenly thought a dog was coming into his space and he bit her. Not hard but enough that both of them had their feelings hurt. Jasper would never of bit one of his family members. When I put him in the back yard in the past few months, he would dig his way out and end up on the front step crying for me.<br /><br />The last week has been rough, he panicked to be near me even if I was in the bathroom with the door closed. Finally, I decided that this is no way for him to live. Although he appeared healthy on the outside, he was very anxious on the inside and I did not want my dog who lived his life to the fullest to be subjected to drugs to calm his state of mind. I decided it is time.....<br /><br />Once the tranquilizer began to take hold poor Jasper leaned against me for support, more emotional than physical support. When I moved at all, he would get up in an attempt to follow me. True to the end he wanted me right there beside him and thats where I remained stroking him until he left this world. I hope your next life is filled with water, squirells and lots of squeaky toys for you buddy. Your spirit will always be beside me.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-7262213977495750377?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-54309920261247228062008-09-11T22:00:00.002-03:002008-09-11T22:07:34.502-03:00SHELBYPoor Shelby, my heart breaks for her. She wants to have a family of her own so bad. She has been with us for 3MONTHS!!. She does not like other dogs so we have to rotate the dogs constantly. She does like puppies so she has had a few of them to play with over the past few months. She is so smart and lovable but needs to be the only pet and with someone who understands the Shepherd breed. Unfortunately, we have not found that perfect home yet and at night she sits on top on her crate in the back porch and watches us through the back door window. She just wants to come in and cuddle by our feet but she can't because of the other doggies. She would get into a fight with them... She is not outright aggressive to other dogs but wants the attention to herself and sometimes takes advantage when the other dog turns away from her. Wishing someone would come along soon.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-5430992026124722806?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-47041217993470923902008-08-27T22:48:00.002-03:002008-08-27T22:51:03.531-03:00GenerousityJust wanted to say thank you to all of you who donated money to help the dogs in need. Without the help the vet bills would have been too much for us to pay. We really appreciate and the doggies do to. Blue went to his new home already and Dimi, the pup is thriving and is now home with us living the life every pup deserves. Thanks again.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-4704121799347092390?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-84903926905204745312008-08-21T01:29:00.002-03:002008-08-21T01:40:58.532-03:00Dogs in needWe seem to have an influx of dogs these days and some needing medical attention. Thank you to all that responded to the e-mail and facebook group for mounting medical bills. Your generousity is greatly appreciated. Blue is doing better on his medication but we do not know yet what else it may take to complete the healing of his poor ear. Yesterday, I came across a pup needing medical attention and had the owner sign the dog over as it was obviously from the lack of energy that this pup needed vet care immediately. The pup was brought to the vet ASAP and it was discovered that this 4mos old pup that I first met a few weeks ago running and happily wagging his tail was diagnosed with Parvo. Many pups die from this virus but I really wanted to try and give this pup an opportunity to live. After a costly night at the Metro Emergency and 24/7 observation of the pup, the vet bills continue. If anyone has time or ideas for fundraising please contact me as the rescue could use some help. I am so busy with the "hands on" helping place dogs that there is no time for me to coordinate a fundraiser. I also have several dogs waiting to come into foster homes if anyone can foster, please let me know. I will update the pups progress. Right now he is fighting for his life but is holding his own. BTW this pup is not a Shepherd. We try to stay with Shepherds only due to our small size but this pup needed help immediately. He is a Valley Bull/AmStaff mix and I will post his pic soon. Thanks again for your donations, we could not have helped these two doggies in need without it.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-8490392690520474531?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-21002824127794612132008-02-05T22:40:00.000-04:002008-02-05T22:51:47.709-04:00HOPEFeeling kind of empty tonight although I am surrounded by seven dogs but one is missing - HOPE. My sweet Hope. Watching her grow into the beautiful well behaved dog was an amazing adventure. She still has a long way to go with regards to trusting people but she no longer runs away she stays in the room with new people and would lean against me for reassurance. She used to run for cover into her crate in the back porch. Once she trusts she trusts completely and was truly devoted to our family. She loved us and we certainly loved her. Her first adopted home of two weeks did not work out and she was returned to us. Recently, we had many many people interested in Hope but I wanted to be sure that her next home would be successful and I feel confident that Hope just fell into clover. She is going to spend part of her week in the city and the other part in her vacation home in Liverpool where she will be playing on the beach with her doggie friends. Hope will love this as she loves dogs and I think my boy George is missing her head resting on his back tonight. They became buddies pretty quick and she learned how to be a dog from my pack. This is what happens though when they share your life for any length of time. I miss her and worry about her tonight but this is what rescue is all about. Sadness, happiness and everything in between. She came wounded both physically/mentally and left a beautiful dog with more Hope in her eyes than when she arrived. We love you Hope its been a great three months getting to know you. You are what makes all the work worth while.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-2100282412779461213?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-58442806859191576782007-11-25T20:47:00.000-04:002007-11-26T08:07:25.806-04:00AUCTIONWe held our first Fund Raising event today and it was a huge success. Thank you to all the people who came out to support this event. There was about 90 people in attendance. There were lots of auction items thanks to the generousity of so many people/businesses. We raised a little over 2400.00 and this is going to help our rescue in many ways. Usually we barely scrape by getting the dogs ready for adoption with the adoption fee but what if a dog needed more medical treatment? We will be building more fencing/enclosures for the dogs as well. A special thanks to Paula Carter for all her hard work and dedication to the rescue. Of course the band "Gravity" donated their afternoon by playing their wonderful music. Everyone enjoyed their music.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-5844280685919157678?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-73163712205499733332007-10-23T22:24:00.000-03:002007-10-23T22:27:16.295-03:00AUCTIONWe will be having our 1st auction/live band to raise money to help the Shepherds. After her last series of epileptic seizures she is not herself anymore. She keeps falling down and losing her balance. She doesn't run like a deer anymore, she saunters along and always seems worried that she is going to have another seizure. We love Annie so much and she was a perfect dog bright loving and kind but we don't want her to suffer any more. She is now on the maximum dosage of medication and she seems to be in a fog. We just went for a long hike on the beach. She had wet food(her favourite treat) for breakfast and I spent all morning with her. My three year old said goodbye to her this morning and told her that "grammy and grampy are going to love her" and I am sure they will. : )<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-4454906544847265872?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-27573217964608150782007-10-04T11:50:00.000-03:002007-10-04T11:52:51.687-03:00Fundraising EventCan help us collect items, sell tickets for our dance/silent auction at the end of November? She had been seizure free for almost 6wks so we thought the increase in phenobarb levels was now working with her system. She must have heard us talking because the next morning Annie had 3 seizures and is now worrying and pacing the floors again. She is finally resting now after her morning run. Her dosage of phenobarb has increased again but it takes a few days for the medication to work. I am worried about leaving and going to work but someone will be checking on her. We will have a add another medication if her seizures continue because she is now at the max. dosage for phenobarb. It is so sad as she is an awesome , smart and loving dog. Hope we find the answers soon. ....<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-5815327168495611522?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-10544733673895046372007-08-06T23:12:00.000-03:002007-08-06T23:15:45.161-03:00Annie AgainI thought we were in the clear but yesterday Annie had three seizures. She had none after the first night she returned to us but out of the blue at 6am I could hear the running sound of her feet hitting the floor. Now she is not herself and worried, pacing around and around all day. Needless to say I placed her on the medication the vet prescribed for epilepsy and hope we never see another seizure. We will keep our paws crossed. : ( (<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-1054473367389504637?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-916508992946798822007-07-30T23:31:00.000-03:002007-07-30T23:33:21.262-03:00FOSTERSI am once again begging for foster people. After the first night of her returning, she has not had another seizure. We took the medication but decided to only use it if the seizures continued. At first, Annie did not even respond to her name and she was back to being hand shy. Now, Annie is back to her active affectionate self with no seizures. She is so loving and loyal that I am certain that the stress of adjusting to a new homes contributed to her seizures. Now I am left wondering what to do with Annie as I certainly don't want her go through that again. In the meantime she is content back here with us.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-8745931043172537653?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-77156229202256588862007-07-16T23:35:00.001-03:002007-07-16T23:38:22.779-03:00AnniePoor Annie has been suffering with seizures in her new home. We love taking in dogs who need homes and the rewards are endless. The attachment and sorrow coincide with the rewards. The longer we have the dogs, the more attached we become. We had Annie for approximately 3months and she was so smart, loyal and loving. We watched her transform from a weary girl fearful of hands to one who would sit with her head on our lap begging for the stroke of our hands. She would watch with worry every move we made and then that "watch and staring" turned into admiration for us. She learned that people can be nice and children are too. She was gentle and kind to my girls and they thought the world of her. She was complex too - she didn't like to play with dogs but loved to run along side of them when we hiked. She was always alert and ready for an adventure- calm and quiet in the house , then spring like a deer through the fields. She went to a home to an older man who just lost his dog of 16yrs and was searching for a loving companion that would accompany him on daily walks. She is the only pet and will be lavished upon. She left 2wks ago and each day I think of her and hope she is happy. Another worry - we always hope that the fit between dog and new owner is a good one and we try our best to ensure this happens.. We love you Annie. : ))<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-4375145122903032113?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-76993139804685811912007-05-27T22:56:00.000-03:002007-05-27T22:58:53.506-03:00FundraisingWe are looking for fundraising ideas and help with future events. Jack has been in our home for almost 5months now boy do we miss his presence. He claimed our front porch as his den and we found it annoying to constantly move Jack and his bed or walk over Jack but now I miss that so much. Funny, it is the little things that hit hard. His moans and groans when he received his doggy massages. His woooo wooo when you walked into the house without him. His determination to walk when he was having so much difficulty when he first arrived. All I would have to say is Good Boy! and he would try to walk. Because of this, Jack lost almost 20lbs and thoroughly enjoyed his walks once he became more fit. We are so so happy Jack found his retirement home. We will never forget you Jack. You are a special boy. : ))<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-4156769027433200632?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-76720538809710335462007-05-24T21:59:00.001-03:002007-05-24T21:59:51.922-03:00puppiesthis is a test blog to see if it will post as I can not seem to get anything posted on blogger these days.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8116862907749309493-7672053880971033546?l=www.nsgsrescue.com%2Fblog'/></div>Leahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02074102786904688206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116862907749309493.post-86973239722441557822007-04-24T22:22:00.000-03:002007-04-24T22:25:00.316-03:00PupsAll eight pups have been placed in their new homes.
