Fa La La La La

Arts for All is hosting a Carol Sing-a-Long at BirdMan Coffee & Books on Monday, December 21, with Nancy Roppolo and special guests. They will be collecting canned goods for the West Feliciana Food Bank as admission so bring a can or two and join the fun. BirdMan will offer the Monday night supper as usual, and this week’s menu will be “hearty soup and grilled cheese or salad” for $7.

Christmas at Rosedown

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site will be ringing in the Christmas season on December 19 and 20, with the seventh annual “Christmas at Rosedown” event. Throughout the weekend, visitors will see the Main House decorated in nineteenth-century style as site staff relate stories of Christmas traditions at Rosedown that were passed down through the Turnbull and Bowman families. Each day, costumed living history presenters from around the area will be displaying numerous 19^th century crafts demonstrations and activities. Among the demonstrations scheduled for this season’s celebration will be down-hearth cooking, candlemaking, spinning, quilting, medical arts and basket weaving. Also featured will be period dancers, musicians and carolers. In addition, children of all ages can enjoy hayrides and have a photo taken with “Father Christmas.” Each day’s activities will culminate with a marshmallow roast. As a special gift to visitors, garden admission is free, and fees for the main house are being reduced to $5 for the “Christmas at Rosedown” event. Avondale Antiques

Just in time for your last minute gift finding, Avondale Antiques on Commerce Street will be open this weekend. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 9 am until 5 pm and on Sunday from 11 am until 5 pm.

Post Office Hours

The St. Francisville Post Office will have special holiday hours for the upcoming holidays. On Thursday, December 24, and again on Thursday, December 31, the Post Office will open at 7 am and close at noon. Please note that the last scheduled mail/collection box pickup is changed to 12 noon on both those days. Regular hours for the Post Office will resume the Saturday following each of these days.

Angola Museum Open House

You are invited to join the LA State Penitentiary Museum staff in celebrating Christmas at the annual open house to be held on Friday, December 11^th from 10 am until 2 pm. The theme of the day will be good food, good sales, and good fellowship! They will also be offering a special on t-shirts of buy one, get a second one at half price, and sweatshirts with hoods are reduced from $25 to $20.

Studio Pottery Sale

Michael Miller invites you to join him at his studio in Weynoke for his Annual Pottery Sale, this weekend. Saturday, December 12, his hours will be 10 am until dark, and on Sunday, from noon until dark. To get to his studio, take Angola Road (hwy. 66) for 11 miles. Turn right on Ouida Irondale Road, take the first right and follow this road – and the signs – to the studio.

Open Hearth Cooking

This Saturday, December 12, from 10 am until 4 pm, the interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site will be demonstrating open hearth cooking. They will present the different methods used to prepare and cook foods in the 1800’s. Guests will also learn the different types of foods which would have been served to the Big House during this time period. Old West Florida

This program at Audubon State Historic Site explores the unique and rich history of the Felicianas, from Spanish Colony to early statehood. More Open Hearth Cooking

Rosedown State Historic Site will also be giving demonstrations of down-hearth cooking but on Saturday, December 19 from 11 am until 2 pm. The 4^th Annual Ebenezer Scrooge Reindeer Race will be held on Saturday, December 12 at 3 pm in Historic Downtown Jackson on Charter Street. Nine racing teams compete in a zany and unconventional race for trophies and “bragging rights” in the Felicianas – East Feliciana Sheriff, The District Attorney, teams from the Towns of Jackson, Clinton, Norwood, Slaughter and St. Francisville, and teams from Jackson and Clinton High Schools. Little elves have been busy making delicious home-made goodies like pumpkin bread, chocolate chip cookies, pound cake, brownies and sausage cheese balls for sale. Christmas in the Country Schedule of Events

There are so many special performances by choirs, bands, and other groups this weekend that this message would be too long if I included all of it. I’ve given you just some of the highlights below but be sure to visit the website – www.stfrancisvillefestivals.com – for a complete listing. You can print out the schedule from there, or visit our Information Center in the West Feliciana Historical Society Museum on Ferdinand Street for a print out of the schedule.

Fresh Christmas Greenery

The Women’s Service League will begin their annual Fresh Wreath Sale this weekend. Their trailer/booth is set up on Ferdinand Street right next to the library. They will also offer pre-wrapped Plantation Country Cookbooks on sale.

Ins N Outs on Legion Street now has fresh cut Frazier Fir Christmas trees, garlands and wreaths on sale. Poinsettias in all colors have also arrived.

Christmas Symphony Concert

Only the location has changed – this year the St. Francisville Symphony Association Christmas Concert will be held at Hemingbough on December 4 at 7:00pm with Dessert Reception to follow. The brilliance of the Baton Rouge Symphony Brass and Percussion with Timothy Muffitt, Music Director, and David Toms, Conductor, is sure to bring out your holiday spirit with popular selections we all know and love! A St. Francisville Christmas Carol

The St. Francisville Transitory Theatre announces its 2009 Christmas Special Production – A St. Francisville Christmas Carol. Director Adam Tidwell will take the classic Dickens tale and set it in a place we all know and love. Back from a year off, James Lanius and his creative crew are ready retell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge’s sleepless night in typical Transitory style. They’ve decided that 19^th century London just isn’t interesting enough! It will be present day St. Francisville, and Ebenezer is now Ellen Ezra Scrooge. Performances are held in conjunction with the annual Christmas in the Country celebration and will be Saturday, December 5 at 4 pm and again at 7:30 pm, and again on Sunday, December 6 at 4 pm and at 7:30 pm. A Colonial Christmas

Experience A Colonial Christmas at Audubon State Historic Site on Saturday, December 5. Area students are invited to the site on Friday, December 4 to experience a special version of A Colonial Christmas. Oakley Plantation House will be trimmed in the style of the 1800s. From 10 am until 5 pm, visitors will see a plantation Christmas dinner setting and rooms decorated for the holiday season. The plantation kitchen will feature the day’s meal being prepared over an open hearth, and costumed staff will explain how the holiday celebration differed from what is traditional in modern times. In addition, various hands-on craft demonstrations will be located throughout the park. For more information, call 635-3739.

Christmas in the Country

This annual hometown celebration is set for the weekend of Friday, December 4 through Sunday, December 6. The First Baptist Church Children’s Choir will sing on the front porch of Town Hall beginning at 5:30 pm, followed by the West Feliciana Middle School Choir singing on the front lawn at 6 pm. They will make sure that Mayor Billy D’Aquilla doesn’t light the Town Christmas Tree too early! After the lighting of the tree, there will be fireworks before the Mayor invites all to an open house and reception inside Town Hall where a certain man in a red suit will be there to hear some Christmas wishes. The West Feliciana Parish Hospital will have a Balloon Release for the Relay for Life before the fireworks. From 6 pm until 8 pm, you are invited to “Peep Into our Holiday Homes” as participating residents invite you to step up onto their porch and see their holiday decorations inside. Don’t forget the annual Baton Rouge Symphony Concert at Hemingbough at 7 pm. Throughout the weekend, Grace Episcopal Church and its members present an art exhibit – “Saints & Angels” in Jackson Hall with all proceeds going to the Anglican Diocese of Honduras for their mission work. Holiday Baking Contest

Christmas in the Country will hold a holiday baking contest this year on Saturday, December 5. Entries must be delivered to the tent in Parker Park by 10 am, and judging is set for 11 am. There are three categories of competition: decorated cakes and desserts; candy and cookies; food gifts. Awards will be given in both Adult and Student categories. For more information, call 635-3614

Homegrown & Hip

That’s the theme for this year’s Christmas in the Country which continues on Saturday, December 5. Beginning with a Prayer Breakfast at the Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 7:30 am, the day continues with Breakfast with St. Nick at Grace Episcopal’s Jackson Hall with three seatings – at 8 am, 9:30 am and 11 am. The Women’s Service League urges you to make reservations by calling 202-5403. Tickets are $6 each. Throughout the day there will be choirs and music throughout the downtown area, and for a complete schedule, check out www.stfrancisvillefestivals.com. Parker Memorial Park will be filled with food, music and children’s activities like spacewalks, train and pony rides, games, The Main Street Band, Christmas photos and lots of food and fun. Vendors will also be displaying and selling their homemade items such as jewelry, photographs, honey, paintings, t-shirts and much more. All of these activities at Parker Park will be from 10 am until 4 pm.

Christmas Parade!

The Women’s Service League presents this fabulous children’s parade that begins at 2 pm on Saturday, December 5, and travels along Ferdinand and Commerce Streets. This year’s theme – Homegrown & Hip – pays tribute to our local Farmers Market, its wonderful farmers and dedicated organizers. Following the parade at 6 pm will be a Community Sing Along at the Methodist Church on Royal Street, and a Live Nativity from 6 pm until 8 pm at the First Baptist Church at the corner of Highway 10 and 61.

Candlelight Tour at Oakley

As an added feature of A Colonial Christmas on Saturday, December 5 at Audubon State Historic Site, candlelight tours of Oakley House will be given from 6 pm until 8 pm. During the tour, traditional holiday snacks such as roasted chestnuts, fig puddings and wassail will be served. There is a $2 adult admission fee with children 12 and under and senior citizens (62 and older) admitted free.

News from our Neighbors

Our friends in East Feliciana have holiday events planned, too, and would like to invite us. The Bluffs’ Restaurant

The Bluffs’ Restaurant is now open for business Tuesday thru Saturday, 3 pm until 9 pm. The restaurant is operated by the Kinchen family, known for the original Caboose Restaurants in Louisiana as well as their current Caboose Restaurant in McComb, Mississippi. Their restaurants serve only U.S.D.A Black Angus Beef and the freshest local seafood and produce. Menu items include various appetizers, soups, salads, steaks, pork chops, chicken, seafood and several signature entries. A children’s menu is also available. The phone number is 634-3000.

Wing It Sports Grill

New owners, Pete and Maria Peterson, will be re-opening Wing It Sports Grill on Monday, November 23. Hours are 11 am until 9 pm, 7 days a week. They will, of course, be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but will re-open on Friday following at their regular hours. Wing It is located in Spring Creek Shopping Center off of Wilcox Road.

The grand opening of The Blue Room will be this Friday, November 20. Thanksgiving Day Schedule

The OxBow Restaurant will be open for Thanksgiving Day and is accepting reservations for seating from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm. They will be serving their regular menu.

Farmer’s Market
Michelle Roth called last Friday to say that the Farmer’s Market has closed shop for the year. The recent heavy rains have played havoc with the crops so they decided to close until the Spring. Thanks to all who supported our local farmers, and especially to the farmers for all their hard labors to provide us with quality produce grown locally.

The Beast Master
The West Feliciana Parish Parks & Recreation Department is hosting the inaugural Beast Master, a mountain bike race on Saturday, November 7. This time trial format race takes place on the challenging Beast trail located at the WFP Sports Park. Race registration starts at 7 am with the Beginner Event starting at 9 am. Remaining racers start at 10:15 am and thereafter. Entry fee is $10, and there will be prizes, T-shirts and free food and drink for riders. Community Treasure Sale Day

Outdoors at Audubon State Historic Site
Saturday, November 7, and the interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site has a full day of outdoor programs scheduled.
Here’s the list:
Ecosystem of Audubon State Historic Site at 10am: This one-hour program will focus on one of the many ecosystems found at ASHS. Guests are invited to explore the nature around the park, and learn about how the different habitats and creatures interact with each other.
Tree Identification Walk at 11am: This program focuses on a more specific aspect of nature, and allows guests to Audubon SHS the chance to learn about the forest that surrounds them. The identification walk covers the park and discusses many of the important and significant trees found here.
Guided Nature Hike at 1:00 pm and again at 3:00pm: A short hiking tour of Audubon SHS. The hike focuses on the naturally forested area surrounding the plantation home as well as the original paths, which John James Audubon would have used during his stay at Oakley in 1821. The program allows guests a chance to observe the natural beauty, which surrounds the home.
Plants and Animals of Oakley at 2pm: This program invites guests to interact with the animal and plant life surrounding Audubon SHS. There will be hands on animal demonstrations as well as introductions to the plants that one should be most aware of when hiking the grounds at Audubon SHS. An admission fee is charged. Grandmother’s Buttons

Everyone is invited to Grandmother's Buttons annual Champagne Holiday Open House this Thursday, November 5, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The store will be closed during regular business hours that day as they "deck the halls," opening at 5:30 with champagne, a table of holiday treats, a coffee bar, door prizes and special sales. A great way to shop early for the best selection, and have fun at the same time! Grandmother’s Buttons is located on Royal Street in the Historic District of St. Francisville.

Outdoors at Audubon State Historic Site

Saturday, November 7, and the interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site has a full day of outdoor programs scheduled. Here’s the list:

Ecosystem of Audubon State Historic Site at 10am: This one-hour program will focus on one of the many ecosystems found at ASHS. Guests are invited to explore the nature around the park, and learn about how the different habitats and creatures interact with each other.

Tree Identification Walk at 11am: This program focuses on a more specific aspect of nature, and allows guests to Audubon SHS the chance to learn about the forest that surrounds them. The identification walk covers the park and discusses many of the important and significant trees found here.

Guided Nature Hike at 1:00 pm and again at 3:00pm: A short hiking tour of Audubon SHS. The hike focuses on the naturally forested area surrounding the plantation home as well as the original paths, which John James Audubon would have used during his stay at Oakley in 1821. The program allows guests a chance to observe the natural beauty, which surrounds the home.

Plants and Animals of Oakley at 2pm: This program invites guests to interact with the animal and plant life surrounding Audubon SHS. There will be hands on animal demonstrations as well as introductions to the plants that one should be most aware of when hiking the grounds at Audubon SHS. An admission fee is charged. Halloween Carnival and Trunk or Treat

St. Francisville United Methodist Church on Royal Street/Fidelity Street presents the Halloween Carnival, hosted by PAX youth and assisted by the church family, on Thursday, October 29^th from 6 to 8 pm. A long-standing tradition of St. Francisville United Methodist Church, they invite all ages to join them for fun, food, and fellowship among the pumpkins, candy and costume clad. This year’s celebration will include “Trunk or Treat”, a time for members of the congregation to park their trucks or cars along Fidelity Street and distribute candy and other prizes as part of the evening’s activities. On the church grounds, there will be the 14 games, including 5 new games, along with the traditional favorites. Games will be set-up on both playgrounds and include a variety of “skills” for a variety of ages. Under the carport, near the Robb House, will be the Cake Walk. Inside the Fellowship Hall will be four different activities. At the west entrance you can add a Halloween “design” to your costume through the talents of our face painters. In the center of the room share your vocal talents through Karaoke, complete with mic, stage, and lights. To top the activities off, there will be an area for you to have your pictures taken with a harvest background. At the east end enjoy grilled hotdogs with chili, chips, a drink, and yummy homemade goodies.

All Hallows Eve

Visitors are invited to Audubon State Historic Site on Friday, October 30, to discover Halloween traditions of the 1800s during the program All Hallows Eve. Between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., there will be an interactive program held throughout the grounds of Oakley illustrating Halloween practices of the 1800s in America. Included will be the origins of pumpkin carving and tales of mystery, apple bobbing, an old fashioned maze, plus games and treats for the whole family to enjoy. Halloween at Rosedown

On Saturday, October 31, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site features Funeral Re-enactment and Ghost Stories with the funeral at 4 pm, and Soul Stories at 5:30 pm. The Rosedown Main House will be in mourning as Rosedown Interpretive Staff re-enacts the funeral service for a member of the historic Turnbull-Bowman family. Throughout the day, the house will be decorated according to 19th century mourning customs and re-enactors will be dressed in 19th century-style mourning costumes. The funeral service will be held at 4 pm inside the main house. Following the funeral, costumed Rosedown Interpretive Staff will portray the spirits of various Turnbull-Bowman family members who have returned to the main house from their graves. The “spirits” will talk about their lives and share reminiscences from their pasts. Admission charged. For more information, call 635-3110.

Open Auditions

The St. Francisville Transitory Theatre will be holding open auditions for A St. Francisville Christmas Carol, its adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. Farmer’s Market

Oh, the beautiful and tasty vegetables at the market will have you remembering recipes from the past. Lots of greens and okra still for that gumbo you want to make. Fresh lettuces, butternut squash, miniature eggplants, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins! Include fresh cut flower bouquets and herbs to plant in your garden or to use in those recipes! It’s every Thursday from noon until 5 pm at the Old 4-H Barn on Wilcox Street.

pARTy in the Ville

This Thursday, October 22 at 7 pm, the girls have put together another painting party at Sage Hill Gifts & Antiques. This week’s artist is Susan Woodard, a water colorist who specializes in unique portraits, gift cards and other paintings. The class is $35 which includes all needed materials. Friends of the Library Book Sale

This annual book sale is set for Saturday, October 24 from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm at the St. Francisville Town Hall on Ferdinand Street. Each year when the Friends hold its book sale, all sorts of wonderful, gently used items appear – fiction and non-fiction books for all ages, CDs, DVDs, videos, and even games. It’s a great opportunity to either restock your own book shelves or look for gifts for others. In addition, this year the Friends will be raffling off a large Madame Alexander “Scarlett O’Hara” doll. There will be coffee and sweet rolls for the early birds, and all proceeds benefit the West Feliciana Parish Library.

7^th Annual Yellow Leaf Arts Festival

Lynn Wood and the Arts for All group have a dynamite festival planned for this weekend, October 24 and 25, in Parker Park, from 10 am until 5 pm both days. This is a good place to start your Christmas shopping! Artists of all medium will be there displaying and selling their wares – a partial list includes jewelry, glass, photography, fabric art, furniture, a beekeeper, water color paintings, dolls, pottery, wooden bowls, candles, birdhouses, folk art, soaps and lotions, metal artistry, outdoor art, and so much more. Last Rodeo of the Year

This Sunday will be the last of this year’s Angola Prison Rodeo & Craft Show. Gates open at 9 am for the arts and crafts show, while the rodeo starts at 2 pm. The rodeo features bull riding, bareback riding, the wild horse race, barrel racing, bull-dogging, wild cow milking, rodeo clowns and more. Halloween at Rosedown

On Saturday, October 31, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site will be in mourning as Rosedown Staff re-enacts the wake and funeral service of Daniel Turnbull, the plantation’s original owner and builder. Turnbull was laid to rest on October 31, 1861, shortly after the commencement of the Civil War. Funeral and mourning customs of the 19th century followed strict traditions and formalities, and in keeping with the event, the main house will be decorated according to 19th century mourning customs, and re-enactors will be dressed throughout the day in 19th century-style mourning costumes. The funeral service will be held in the Informal Parlor of the Main House at 4 pm.

Following the funeral service, Rosedown Plantation will be visited by members of the historic Turnbull-Bowman family, as the Plantation opens its doors for a rare evening of “ghost” tours in celebration of the Halloween season. At 5:30 pm visitors are invited to take a candlelight tour through the Plantation Main House as living history presenters portray the spirits of family members who have returned from their graves. Each of the “spirits” will speak about their former lives at Rosedown and share reminiscences from their pasts. Admission charged. For more information, call 635-3110.

Farmer’s Market

Pumpkins, Scarecrows and a Movie – Changed Venue

The St. Francisville Main Street Program is sponsoring pumpkin carving and scarecrow decorating at the West Feliciana Sports Park on Friday, October 16 starting at 5:30 pm, under the pavilion. They’ll provide the pumpkins and the hay – you bring the old clothes to decorate your scarecrow. The movie is Coraline in 3-D, and 3-D glasses will be given out. The Women’s Service League will be selling concessions, and admittance is a canned good for the West Feliciana Food Bank. The movie starts at dark so bring your chairs or a blanket and join us for the fun!

Congratulations to Sue Wilbert Turner!

On Tuesday, the Inter-Civic Council and The Advocate recognized Sue Turner for her many years of work with museums and in historic restoration and preservation, naming her the recipient of the 68th annual Golden Deeds Award. Mrs. Turner has received national recognition for her preservation and advisory work with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She is also a member of the Louisiana Museum Foundation, served on the board of directors for the Louisiana State Museum, and is a board of trustees member and adviser on the National Trust, a member of the board of directors for the BREC Foundation, and founding member of Louisiana Association of Museums.

Some of Turner’s notable accomplishments include her efforts and those of others to save Magnolia Mound Plantation’s historic house from developers who in the mid-1960s had proposed using the site for condominiums. Turner and her husband also restored Live Oak Plantation in St. Francisville.

Angola Prison Rodeo

Gates open at 9:00 am for the arts and crafts show, and the rodeo starts at 2:00 pm. Ticket cost $10 each and can be purchased before the rodeo by calling 655-2042 or 655-2041. Sunday Mystery Tour

1779 in Baton Rouge

The largest battle in the American Revolutionary War fought in Louisiana was the Battle of Baton Rouge and on Saturday, October 10, from 10am-4pm, this largely forgotten battle will be remembered at Audubon State Historic Site. On September 21st, 1779 the Spanish General Bernardo Galvez along with American troops captured the British military post and garrison at Baton Rouge ending British control of the Mississippi Valley and river. This year will actually mark the 230th anniversary of the event, and this program will begin the series of programs held at Audubon to commemorate the movement of West Feliciana from Spanish Territory to the West Florida Rebellion of 1810. Visitors can experience the sights and sounds of 1779 through seeing the soldiers' camps, a musket demonstration, talks and much more. An admission fee is charged. Pumpkins, Scarecrows and a Movie

The St. Francisville Main Street Program is sponsoring pumpkin carving and scarecrow decorating at Parker Park on Friday, October 16 starting at 5:30 pm. They’ll provide the pumpkins and the hay – you bring the old clothes to decorate your scarecrow. (I’m almost finished with mine so look for it in the window of the Museum and Information Center on Ferdinand Street!) The movie is Coraline in 3-D, and 3-D glasses will be given out. The Women’s Service League will be selling concessions, and admittance is a canned good for the West Feliciana Food Bank. The movie starts at dark so bring your chairs or a blanket and join us for the fun!

Construction and Traffic

Because of all the construction on Highway 61 and all the events we have this month, please know that traveling through the parish will take a bit longer. Add to that the rodeo traffic, and it could be a nightmare! With a little preparation and a lot of patience, things should go much smoother.

Farmer’s Market

Last week I got some pumpkins, and there were many to choose from and in all sizes. There was still okra, potatoes, eggplants and bell peppers, and more vegetables. One farmer even had sweet potatoes! There were cut flower arrangements as well as plants for your garden. Live Music at The Mag

Each Friday the Magnolia Café offers live music on the screened porch. Life in a Slave Cabin

Also on Sunday, October 4, this hour long program is held at Audubon State Historic Site's original slave cabins and allows guests to have a better understanding about what life was like for slaves on a plantation. Cooking in Slave Cabin Row

This program is set for Sunday, October 4 at 1:30pm, and invites guests to Audubon SHS to observe the types of cooking used by slaves for themselves. Southern Garden Symposium

This year marks the 21^st year of the Southern Garden Symposium which attracts garden enthusiasts from across the South and will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 16-17. The symposium will begin with a series of workshops on Friday, October 16. Attendees may select two of the following:

Methodist Church Folk Choir

You are invited to join the United Methodist Church Folk Choir for an evening of gospel, country and folk music on Sunday, October 25. The Methodist Men will serve a pancake supper at 5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall on Felicity Street, and the Folk Choir will present music in the Sanctuary starting at about 6:15 pm. A Gathering of Forces

A celebration to kick off the Bicentennial of the Republic of West Florida will be held on Sunday, September 27 at 2 pm, in St. Francisville, the capitol of the Republic. There will be guest speakers on the history of the Republic, period re-enactors, a cannon salute, cake and a celebratory toast. David Norwood is the representative on the West Florida Bicentennial Commission, and he will be joined by the representatives from the other Florida parishes who make up the commission. All of the parishes have been busy planning special events through 2010 to celebrate so come out and rebel a little!

The farmers will be selling their produce every Thursday from noon until 5 pm until the first frost. Buy the freshest vegetables in town and support our local farmers, too. The market is located at the old 4-H barn on Wilcox Street.

Hunters for the Hungry

Just in time for hunting season, Sunday, September 27 is the annual Clean Out Your Freezer Day sponsored by the Hunters for the Hungry. Clean out your freezer and donate frozen game, fish, or any frozen items – and make room for fresh game! Feliciana Seafood and Deli on Highway 61 will take your contributions from 1 pm until 4 pm on that day. What a great program!

The Carriage House Restaurant at The Myrtles welcomes Chef Bill Boudreaux to their staff. Chef Boudreaux brings his vast experience to the wonderful folks already at The Carriage House. The Cotton Experience

Throughout the months of September and October at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, visitors are welcome to pluck bolls of cotton from the plants and remove the seeds from the bolls. Once the cotton is picked and deseeded, visitors are asked to drop the cotton in an authentic “cotton bag.” This will be offered daily from 10 am until 4 pm. Life on Plantation Row

Visitors of all ages are invited to Audubon State Historic Site during the Life on Plantation Row programs on September 25 and 26. From 9 am until 1 pm on Friday, area schools are invited to participate in this immersive program. Students will try their hands at the work the slaves did, taste the food they ate, and learn of the lives they led. On Saturday, from 10 am until 4 pm, visitors to the park will get a look into the life of a slave on a Louisiana plantation. The public may try their hand at crafts and skills that were performed daily by Plantation slaves. The role of food for slaves – and its transition into today’s culture – will be highlighted, along with an opportunity to sample a few dishes. Quilt Raffle for Food Pantry

Made by the ladies of the “Feliciana Stitchers Quilt Guild” of St. Francisville, tickets are $1 each or 7 for $5 and proceeds benefit the West Feliciana Food Pantry. The raffle will take place on October 24 at 11:30 am during the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale at the St. Francisville Town Hall.

Farmer’s Market

The farmers will be selling their produce every Thursday from noon until 5 pm until the first frost. I’m told to be looking for fall vegetables to start making their appearance – sweet potatoes, pumpkins, squashes. In the meantime, check out the lettuces, spaghetti squash, butter nut squash, peppers, potatoes, okra, honey, fresh baked goods and just-picked-this-morning flower arrangements. It all happens at the old 4-H barn on Wilcox Street.

Avondale Antiques

It’s the third weekend already and that means that Avondale Antiques will be open. Michelle let me know that she has a new shipment of antiques from England that she’s been busy unloading. Store hours are Friday and Saturday, 9 am until 5pm, and Sunday from 11 am until 5 pm.

Quilt Raffle for Food Pantry

Come by the West Feliciana Historical Society Museum on Ferdinand Street to check out the beautiful quilt that will be raffled off to benefit the West Feliciana Food Pantry. The quilt was made by the ladies of the “Feliciana Stitchers Quilt Guild” of St. Francisville as part of the 2008 Quilt Challenge which involved making a quilt using black and white fabric plus one other color. Each participating member made an extra block, and the resulting quilt was pieced together from those blocks. Tickets are $1 each or 7 for $5 and can be purchased from any member of the Feliciana Stitchers, the Historical Society, the Bank of St. Francisville or any of the following: Hilda Crangle, Jane Dietrich, Charlotte McNamara or Bettye Martin. The raffle will take place on October 24 at 11:30 am during the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale at the St. Francisville Town Hall.

Lost Arts at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site

On Saturday, September 19 visitors are invited to Rosedown to learn about nineteenth-century arts and activities. Presented by Rosedown Interpretive Ranger Sasha Traña, this series of monthly programming is intended to introduce and demonstrate various historic arts, activities and crafts that are little seen today. The “Lost Art” that will be presented this month is Loom Weaving. During the program, Traña will explain to visitors the history of loom weaving, from its origins in the ancient cultures of Egypt, China and Persia, through its importance in the lives of Native American peoples, to its popularity during the Revolutionary era in America as a way to boycott British-manufactured cloth. Traña will be presenting her demonstration of loom weaving on the back porch of the Rosedown Main House. The program will be held between 11 am and 3 pm. For more information call 225-635-3110.

Chamber Music Series

The St. Francisville Symphony Association announces its 2009 – 2010 calendar which features the musicians of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. All concerts will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Ferdinand Street. The first concert is scheduled for Saturday, October 3 at 8 pm. The Christmas Concert and Dessert Reception is set for December 4 at 7 pm, and the final concert is set for Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 8 pm. Season tickets are $50, Seniors for $40, and individual tickets are $20 each. Special price for children for the Christmas Concert is $10. Children under 18 who are accompanied by an adult to the October and March concerts will be admitted free of charge. Guided Nature Hike

The hike features the naturally forested area surrounding the plantation home as well as the original paths, which John James Audubon would have used during his stay at Oakley in 1821. The program allows guests a chance to observe the natural beauty, which surrounds the home. An admission fee is charged. Did You Know?

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site continues its living history series with a program scheduled for Saturday, September 5. During the nineteenth century there were many practices that were a way of life for the people of past eras. Some of these practices will be explored over the next months in Rosedown’s “Did You Know” program. The third in this series of programs will focus on What People Wore. Join Interpretive Ranger Sasha Traña as she discusses the history of American clothing from the Colonial era through the early twentieth century. Also discussed will be the way clothing has changed and evolved throughout time. Traña will be presenting her demonstration between 11 am and 2 pm in the Conference Room of the Rosedown Gift Shop. Additional “Did You Know” programs will be offered on the first Saturday through October. The final program, “Did You Know: 19th Century Schooling,” is scheduled for Saturday, October 3. The Duel at High Noon

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site presents this program that will discuss the history of dueling, exploring some of the most well-known duels and duelists in history. Additionally, there will be demonstrations of the different types of duels of the past, as well as a discussion of the rules that governed such contests. Book Amnesty Month

September is Book Amnesty Month at West Feliciana Parish Library. This means those books and DVDs you were afraid to return are fine-free. That’s right—all overdue fines will be forgiven the month of September. But there is a catch - each person is invited to donate a canned good at the library for the local food bank. Farmer’s Market

Unbelievably fresh and delicious produce and baked goods – and fresh cut flowers, too – are at the market every Thursday from noon until 5 pm. Last week I purchased tomatoes, yellow squash, lettuce, corn on the cob, potatoes, bell peppers, heirloom red okra, garlic and spaghetti squash. Yum!

White Linen Night

This Saturday night, the St. Francisville Main Street is again bringing to life White Linen Night from 5pm until 9pm. Merchants along the trolley line will have red hot specials for customers, and local restaurants are offering tastes from their menus to entice you to dinner after the fun is over. Music will be performed throughout the route. So much is being planned, and here is a preview:

A cooking demonstration on the open hearth at Audubon State Historic Site is set for Saturday, August 8 from 10 am until 4 pm. Upcoming Music at The BirdMan

At the July 27^th Blue Monday Supper, Clay Parker will perform. This young man plays in the “Mosspickers” with Patrick Sylvest and comes highly recommended. There will be no music or supper on August 10 as there is an Arts For All board members workshop. Music returns on August 17 with Steve Judice; August 24 is Nancy Roppolo’s songwriter’s night; and ending out the month on August 31, Nancy Roppolo returns with the Bryant girls!

Golfing Returns to The Bluffs

The Bluffs Golf Course will be officially re-opened on Saturday, August 1, but golfers who can’t wait until then are already allowed to play. While the phone line to the Pro Shop should be connected today or tomorrow, golfers wanting to set up tee times can call Mike Holley at 721-7176 or Gerald Bates at 245-2669. Green fees for non-members are $65 Friday through Sunday (cart included) and $50 Tuesday through Thursday (cart included.) If playing with a member the fees are reduced to $50 and $40, respectively.

pARTy in the Ville

Here’s something new that is being held at Sage Hill Gift Shop’s meeting room: Time to wine down and mix and mingle. Bring your favorite beverage and create a picture with a local artist. He/she will show you step-by-step how to make a masterpiece that you will take home at the end of the evening. All supplies will be provided, so come prepared to experience an outing of ART, Food, and Fun. The cost is $35.00. This annual event is always a great summer outing, and how could it not be? These tiny creatures are so colorful and enchanting, and to see them this close is fascinating. This weekend the Feliciana Nature Society will host a reception on Friday evening, July 24, at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site begins the festival, with wine and cheese offered at 6 pm, followed at 6:45 pm with Mr. Bob Loudon presenting a program on the hummingbirds of Ecuador. Admission for this is $10. The festival will continue on Saturday, July 25. From 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., hummingbird biologists Linda Beall and Nancy Newfield will capture and band birds at two private gardens in the St. Francisville area. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe hummingbirds up close as they are weighed and measured. In addition, vendors will be at both homes with hummingbird-attractive plants available for sale. The gardens include the home of Carlisle Rogillio at 15736 Tunica Trace (Hwy. 66) and Murrell Butler at 9485 Oak Hill Road. A $5 fee covers admission to both gardens. Did You Know?

The summer series of living history programs continues at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site with the popular “Did You Know” series scheduled for Saturday, August 1. “Women in American History” introduces the most influential women in American history, focusing on what these women accomplished and what they had to endure to reach their personal and professional goals. Interpretive Ranger Sasha Trana will present this program between 11 am and 2 pm in the Rosedown Conference Room. For more information, call 225-635-3110.

The Great Outdoors

The interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site offers a whole range of nature programs throughout the day on Saturday, August 1. Beginning at 10 am, the one-hour program Ecosystem of Audubon State Historic Site invites guests to explore the nature around the park and learn about how the different habitats and creatures interact with each other. The Tree Identification Walk begins at 11 am and focuses on a more specific aspect of nature, allowing guests to Audubon SHS the chance to learn about the forest that surrounds them. At 1 pm and again at 3 pm, the Guided Nature Hike, a short hiking tour of the site, focuses on the naturally forested area surrounding the plantation home as well as the original paths which John James Audubon would have used during his stay at Oakley in 1821 while allowing the guests a chance to observe the natural beauty which surrounds the home. The last in the series this day will be at 2 pm, the Plants and Animals of Oakley. There will be hands on animal demonstrations as well as introductions to the plants that one should be most aware of when hiking the grounds at Audubon SHS. Slave Life on the Plantation

The interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site offers a series of programs on Sunday, August 2, focusing on the daily lives of the slaves who worked and lived at Oakley. Beginning at noon, Life in a Slave Cabin allows guests to have a better understanding about what life was like for slaves on a plantation. This hour long program is held in one of the original slave cabins, and will cover family life and customs, as well as discussing housing accommodations, rations, and other things. At 1:30 pm, guests are invited to observe the types of cooking used by slaves for themselves in Cooking in Slave Cabin Row. The program discusses not only what slaves ate and how they cooked it, but also the differences between their meals and that of the owner of the plantation. Ending this series of programs will be Plantation Crafts at 3 pm. This hour long program invites the guests to observe one of the many period handcrafts which would have been done by a slave on a plantation. News from The Bluffs

Plans are now being made to open The Bluffs Golf Course to its members and to non-members. The Bluffs Advisory Board will be meeting soon to work out the details that will also include opening a small restaurant/café in the old turnhouse. Stay tuned as more information is made available.

Watermelon Season

The Farmers’ Market is held every Thursday from noon until 5 pm at the old 4-H Barn on Wilcox Street. The watermelons are sweet and juicy; the honey is straight from the honeycombs here in the area; the corn was in the field this morning; and the tomatoes are still warm from ripening in the sun. There is so much more but you’ll have to go out and see for yourself. Try some homemade goodness this week!

Breaking News

Pam Breaux, Secretary of the Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism, reports that all of our State Historic Sites will continue to operate 7 days a week. Budget cuts had forced the decision to only operate them for two days per week, but last minute amendments to the State’s budget gave the funding needed to keep the 17 sites around the State open. Thank you to all of our legislators and the governor for realizing the economic impact these sites have on the communities in which they are located.

Main Street’s Poppin’!

There is no need to travel to enjoy Independence Day because the St. Francisville Main Street Program has special events going on all day Saturday. The Main Street Merchants are planning a shopping event, and participating shops will be flying the Stars and Stripes. Each will have sidewalk sales and will participate in the Shopping Flag Pull. The Flag Pull works like this: each participating store will have 10 small flags stuck in a sand bucket, each with a different color tip. At the time of your purchase, pull a flag to see if you’ve just won 5%, 10% or 15% off your purchase OR a special gift. Sale items are excluded from the Flag Pull. Annual Pie Baking Contest

This annual Independence Day event benefits the Julius Freyhan Foundation. If you want to enter your best pie, it must be delivered to the BirdMan Coffee & Books by 12:30 pm on July 4^th. Judging is at 1 pm, and the pies will be sold following the judging with all proceeds going to the foundation to help restore the Julius Freyhan School.

Fireworks!

Hot dogs, drinks, music and fireworks will be poppin’ at the Town Ball Park on Burnett Road. As night falls, the Laughing Lizards will play patriotic music, banjo style, and the American Legion will have food and drinks. And as always, the Town of St. Francisville will provide a fabulous fireworks show!

Did You Know: Hunting Practices

Also on Saturday, July 4, from 11 am – 2 pm, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site features their "Did You Know" series of programs which focuses on different facets of life in the past that are not well-known in today's societies. For this program, hunting practices will be discussed, as well as why hunting was important to 18th- and 19th-century life. Tree Identification Walk

Audubon State Historic Site presents this program focusing on a more specific aspect of nature, and allowing guests to Audubon SHS the chance to learn about the forest that surrounds them. Set for Saturday, July 4 at 11 am, the identification walk covers the park and discusses many of the important and significant trees found here. An admission fee is charged. Guided Nature Walk

Following the Tree Identification Walk at Audubon State Historic Site, July 4 at both 1pm and 3 pm, this short hiking tour focuses on the naturally forested area surrounding the plantation home, as well as the original paths, which John James Audubon would have used during his stay at Oakley in 1821. Oakley's Plants and Animals

The interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site will be busy on July 4, as this program begins at 2 pm. Guests are invited to interact with the animal and plant life surrounding Audubon SHS. There will be hands-on animal demonstrations, as well as introductions to the plants to watch for when hiking through the forest and specifically in the area of the site. Garden Talk

On Sunday, July 5 at 10:30 am, the staff at Audubon State Historic Site presents Garden Talk. This program introduces the different plants found in the gardens of Audubon SHS. Life in a Slave Cabin

Also on Sunday, July 5, at noon, this hour long program is held at Audubon SHS's original slave cabins and allows guests to have a better understanding about what life was like for slaves on a plantation. This program covers family life and customs as well as discussing housing accommodations, rations, etc. An admission fee is charged. Cooking in Slave Cabin Row

Following the Life in a Slave Cabin program, this program at 1:30 pm invites guests to Audubon SHS to observe the types of cooking used by slaves for themselves. The program discusses not only what slaves ate and how they cooked it, but also the differences between their meals and that of the owner of the plantation. An admission fee is charged. Slave Crafts

Ending the fascinating and education series on slaves at Audubon State Historic Site, this hour long program begins at 3 pm and invites the guests to observe one of the many period handcrafts, which would have been done by a slave on a plantation. Children of all ages are invited to enjoy demonstrations of the toys and games that would have entertained the families of the 19^th century. Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration

The Feliciana Nature Society will hold this annual celebration of hummingbirds on Friday, July 24 and Saturday July 25. The festival will begin with a reception on Friday evening, July 24, at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site with wine and cheese at 6 pm, followed at 6:45 pm by a speaker with a short program on the tiny birds. Admission for this is $10. Continuing on Saturday, July 25, from 7 am until 3 pm, hummingbird biologists Linda Beall and Nancy Newfield will capture and band birds at two private gardens in the St. Francisville area. The gardens include the home of Carlisle Rogillio in the Tunica Trace and Murrell Butler’s Oak Hill. Hummingbird-friendly plants as well as crafts and birding optics will also be available for sale. Audubon Summer Festival

Audubon State Historic Site celebrates its 55^th Anniversary on Saturday, June 27 from 10 am until 4 pm. Visitors will be able to step into the Civil War and visit a soldier’s camp, and there will also be hands-on period demonstrations such as blacksmithing, open hearth cooking and more. Main Street’s Poppin’

The St. Francisville Main Street Merchants are planning a special shopping event on Saturday, July 4. Participating shops will be flying the Stars and Stripes. They will have sidewalk sales and will participate in the Shopping Flag Pull. The Flag Pull works like this: each participating store will be have 10 small flags stuck in a sand bucket, each with a different color tip representing something special. Annual Pie Baking Contest

This annual Independence Day event benefits the Julius Freyhan Foundation. If you want to enter your best pie, it must be delivered to the BirdMan Coffee & Books by 12:30 pm on July 4^th. Judging is at 1 pm. (How do I get that job?!) The pies will be sold following the judging with all proceeds going to the foundation to help restore the Julius Freyhan School.

The Day the War Stopped

This annual event will be held this weekend beginning Friday, June 12, with graveside histories at Grace Episcopal Church at 7 pm, followed at 8 pm with an open house and historical presentation at the Masonic Lodge. Things get rolling on Saturday, June 13 with a parade at 10:30 am. A special candlelight tour of Oakley Plantation at Audubon State Historic Site is set for 7:30 pm. Rounding out activities will be a talk on Sarah Knox Taylor Davis at Locust Grove State Historic Site on Sunday, June 14 at 2 pm, followed by a gravestone rubbing class. The Civil War

Few events changed our country as much as the Civil War. On June 13, Audubon State Historic Site presents The Civil War at Oakley from10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. This program illustrates life on the home front in Louisiana during the American Civil War from 1861-1865. There will be a living history camp where costumed staff will give various presentations. In the evening there will be a period dance held on the grounds, and candlelight tours will be given. Heirloom Plants and Flowers

The Summer Horticultural Seminar Series at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 10 am until noon. Manager and Horticulturist Patricia Aleshire will conduct this popular summer garden program on “Heirloom Plants and Flowers.” During a slide and lecture session, Aleshire will discuss the historical background of numerous antique plantings available for modern gardens. She will also discuss various cultivation tips, techniques and care needed for these heirloom plantings to thrive in a southern garden. Following the slide lecture, Aleshire will lead a walking tour of selected areas of Rosedown’s historic gardens. For more information, call 635-3110.

Spinning Wheels and Weaving Looms

Textiles on the Plantation is the name of the program scheduled for Saturday, June 20, from 10 am until 4 pm at Audubon State Historic Site. There will be a demonstration and talk about the use of the plantation’s original weaving loom as well as a discussion on how thread for the loom was created using the spinning wheel. Basket Weaving

Ferry Status

The water is high – real high – but the ferry is still running during its regular hours of 5 am until 9 pm seven days a week. Cars waiting to board the ferry are being stopped on Ferdinand Street just past Que Pasa and the old Bayou Sara Depot because the water covers the road on either side, and only one car can pass at a time.

Spanish West Florida

As we prepare to celebrate the bicentennial of the creation of the West Florida Republic in 2010, the staff at Audubon State Historic Site offers the program, Spanish West Florida Militia. On Saturday, June 6 at 10 am, a costumed staff member will discuss the West Florida troops and also will include a discussion of popular military dress as well as weaponry for the time period. Native American Tools

Long before the European settlers arrived here, the Native Americans inhabited this region. Visitors to Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site on Sunday, June 7, will be treated to a demonstration of flint knapping, which allowed Native Americans to make their own tools. Summer Fun Day

On Friday, June 12 from 9 am until 4 pm at the West Feliciana Sports Park, the West Feliciana Drug & Alcohol Awareness Council, the Sheriff’s Office, the 20^th Judicial District Attorney, Parks and Recreation, and the LA Highway Safety Commission present Summer Fun Day. There will be live bands and entertainment with special guests throughout the day. K-9 narcotics demonstrations along with fire department demonstrations, the Army National Guard, and the LA State Police will all be there. Free door prizes and refreshments, food and fun are offered. Special emcee is Jacques Doucet, the sports anchor at WAFB Channel 9. Come out and have a ball!

The Day the War Stopped

It wasn’t for very long, but for one brief June afternoon the fighting between the North and the South stopped so that a fallen comrade could be given a proper burial. This moment of brotherhood is commemorated every June in downtown St. Francisville, and this year’s event is scheduled for June 12 through the 14.
