I saw it on the Activity Calendar, as I was updating it for April and was a bit confused as to what this even was. Needless to say, I was suprised. We started, as usual, by setting up all the decorations, then night before- beautiful springtime flower arrangments, setting up the buffet table and of course hours of ironing table clothes, napkins and place mats. Seemed a little over done for soup and salad. Little did I know, there was such an impressive menu. Beef- vegitable soup, hearty tomato soup, minestroni and a great chili, served with a salad, rolls and a good spread of hard salami, an assortment of cheeses and crackers. It was delicious. The residents were amazed and very curious as to who prepared it. Vivian, our dietary manager, definately did a GREAT JOB!! Again, staff donned our aprons and got the food out quick and left no one undecided wether they were still hungry. Our administrator has decided to raise the bar and feature at least 2 of these dinner socials a month. This is opposed to the at least one a month, previously mentioned in the blog. Our next event, is going to be Pizza night on the 23rd.Ryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03993131527599698003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8043195450841390609.post-44021452022082037712008-04-03T08:03:00.003-05:002008-04-03T08:20:47.815-05:00St. BaldRicks FoundationNever heard of it? St. BaldRick's Foundation is a charity that raises money for research and awareness of Childhood Cancer. At each event, hundreds of volunteers shave their head (as children with cancer often lose their hair) and have friends and co-workers "sponser" them to raise money for the cause. Check out their site for more info at www.stbaldricks.org. Well, this year, one of Calvin Johnson Care Center's nurses participated. Not only did John participate and shave his head, but a long list of other employees supported him and the cause by donating over 800 dollars!! Blowing his goal of $500 away. Check out the stats here John's Shave. It was a wonderful event, and definately heart breaking and eye openning to meet some of the kids the foundation is involved with. I recommend others check out St. BaldRick's and look for local events near them.Ryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03993131527599698003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8043195450841390609.post-4274168462479776802008-03-25T07:55:00.002-05:002008-03-25T08:04:38.514-05:00Good FridayAs most of you know, we, at Calvin Johnson Care Center, have been trying to increase our resident/family events. So this month, we celebrated the Easter holiday with a Good Friday Fishfry. Residents' families and friends were invited to partake with us. The dining hall was very aromatic as the food was being cookied and served. The menu consisted of fried catfish and cod, with spaghetti and/or macaroni accompanying it. Also on the side was greenbeans and hushpuppies. It was quite an enticing spread. The meal was again buffet style, and the staff pulled together to make sure that everyone was served almost instantly. I'm very glad to see the staff comming together and getting into the spirit of these social dinners and can't wait for the next one.Ryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03993131527599698003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8043195450841390609.post-19749464919033302702008-02-27T17:13:00.003-06:002008-02-27T17:16:41.668-06:00Got the Blues?Rodney was here again today and rocked the house with a great set on the saxaphone. He has really been a valuable asset to our home, as he is a fantastic musician. I know the staff enjoyed it to (even those of us working could hear it on the halls). So, thanks again Rodney for entertaining our residents and staff!!Ryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03993131527599698003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8043195450841390609.post-26622914174475328972008-02-22T09:40:00.002-06:002008-02-22T09:46:39.162-06:00What's with this weather?Anyone in the area knows: the weather has not been good to us lately. Fortunately, our outstanding staff ALL made it to work OK despite the roadways being atrocious! Is that dedication; I think so. The weatherman says we are in for a similar day today, and so far we've seen the same attitude from staff. Caring doesn't stop with a little rain, sleet and snow!Ryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03993131527599698003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8043195450841390609.post-46224526582347048992008-02-18T12:23:00.004-06:002008-02-18T15:54:31.416-06:00Valentines Day DinnerWell for those of you who didn't make it, you sure missed out! The Valentines Day Dinner was a big hit. The staff really deserves a hand for comming together and making this happen. The dining hall looked beautiful and really set the mood for a good meal. We had another buffet style event where staff was serving a delicious italian-inspired menu. The meal started off with a light salad followed by spaghetti, fettucini and lasagna. The pastas were served with green beans, garlic bread and bread sticks. Our residents were treated to sparkling grape juice in champagne flutes and had a wonderful spumoni ice cream for dessert. We were lucky to have many families in attendence and I think everyone really enjoyed the event. I'm currently working on getting some of the pictures taken uploaded. Thanks again to the staff for all of the work put in. I know we really made a lot of people happy!!Ryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03993131527599698003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8043195450841390609.post-76606682172578962492008-02-11T19:24:00.001-06:002008-02-18T15:46:02.269-06:00Valentines Day Already?!
Well, it seems like we just had New Years and it's almost Valentine's Day already.
