Proof of the media’s impact on the world today, it was not until the full throttle report put out by the New York Times that the environmental awareness sought by Senator Gaylord Nelson really took on some steam. For seven years prior to the actual Earth Day grassroots movement, Senator Nelson had tried to gain the proper respect and recognition he felt the environment deserved.

Beginning in 1962, Nelson purposed to President Kennedy the idea of a national conservation tour, which was an attempt to bring political attention to the needs of the environment, composed of a five day trek covering eleven states to spread environmental awareness. Although this seemed to be what would break into the public’s attention, it did not. It seemed the people were troubled by the environments degradation but the public policy was not following that concern. Earth Day did not come about until six long years later.

Noticing the interest being captured by the press within the student anti-war movements over the Vietnam War, an idea came to Senator Nelson. Creating an “anti-war movement” but directing the concern to the environment rather than any actual war. The hope was that this demonstration of concern for the environment would generate press and public awareness and in so stimulate the public policy to take action in areas of environmental interest. Five months prior to the demonstration, the New York Times, ran a lengthy article on the intent of the grassroots movement purposed by Senator Nelson. Needless to say, the accumulation of twenty million demonstrators backed by thousands of schools and communities organized and finally grabbed the political attention the environment so rightly deserved. Easter is often considered to be nothing more than a Christian holiday that is celebrated around the world. The Easter holiday marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The origin of Easter can be traced back to mythology. The name Easter comes from the name of an ancient Greek Goddess of Spring, Eostre. Eostre, it was believed returned to the Earth after a long, cold winter and with her, brought along the light and warmth of Spring. Ancient Greeks celebrated the return of Eostre and spring with pagan festivals. As with many pagan festivals, the date coincided with the equinox on the 21st of March every year. It was important to keep Eostre happy in order to ensure she would return year after year. Therefore the Greeks threw an extravagant feast and celebration. When the holiday became more Christianized, the celebration was no longer about welcoming spring, but instead was based upon the resurrection of Jesus. Baby shower, huh? Let me get this straight. So, your best friend has just announced she’s pregnant. You stood as her Maid of Honor, you planned her bachelorette party, and now – now you can’t believe that you just offered to give her a baby shower! Relax, in order to throw a great baby shower you don’t really need to know anything about babies. So, in that sense you are in luck. Since most baby showers are held before the baby is born, the shower tends to be more about the party than it is about the baby.

First of all, figure out a date to plan the baby shower for. In order to best do this, it is a good time to start figuring out the guest list too. You will want to keep in mind that some people may be traveling to participate so plan accordingly. My personal favorite time to schedule a baby shower is about the 7th month or so. The mom is looking fun, perky and pregnant (a prerequisite in my eyes) but isn’t completely tired and uncomfortable – yet. Also, the sex of the child is often known by then so shopping and creating wish lists of things the parents will be needing is easier to create to help the guests select their gifts.

Selecting invitations and party accessories is as easy as logging on to the site of your favorite party supplier. While you are on there, don't forget to look at the baby shower games. Keep your refreshments stress free by keeping them simple. Finger sandwiches, chips and salsa, a slow cooker full of soup and warm breadsticks on the side all make for easy self serving. The Irish aren't much like the people that Irish Americans pretend to be on St Patricks Day. But please don't take our stereotypes away. We love them so.

Descendents of those who immigrated during the Irish potato famines of the 18th and 19th century generally only have St Patricks Day to remind them of those long ago ancestral ties. We may not have any real understanding of the country at all. Still we must beg pardon of the modern Irish citizenry and continue our traditions.

So with tongue in cheek every American who likes a mid-March excuse to celebrate professes to be partly of Irish ancestry. We wear green and don't know why. We may live in communities that dye their rivers green or present bar patrons with green beer. Restaurants serve corned beef and cabbage amid leprechaun decorations or plastic pots-of-gold. This is a difficult dish to prepare: eat out!

School children enjoy cupcakes of any flavor with green icing. Other snacks may be potato chips or potato sticks. Parties for St Patricks Day are sure to be decorated with green and white twisted streamers and four leaf clovers. Paper party goods are the only option for children's parties but some adult dinners feature Irish linen and good china. To many this is a day off and a chance for a three day weekend of skiing. A Presidents' Day party should have Presidents' Day games to play. This game of bluff allows everyone to tell a stories in turn. As the tale-teller finishes his/her telling of the story all the players express their opinion in turn: true or fabricated. The players who are correct in their guesses receive a toothpick. The tale-tellers take their turns around the circle. As every player has told the story, the players count the toothpicks. What party gathering would be complete without a few games to play? Here is a free Chinese New Year game that is fun for all. First, have everyone divide up into 2 teams (6 players in each one). Choose 3 persons for a jury. The teams number off. Each player must remember his/her number. The players form up 2 lines in file. The distance between the lines is 6-8 steps. Between the lines there stand 3 chairs. The first chair is "a bus", the second - is "a tram", the third - is "a trolley-bus". The instructor starts speaking: "It's early, early morning. All the people are hurrying to work. There are many people at the bus-stops. Now in the distance I see … I see… What do I see … Well, it's number 3 bus." His/her words the instructor pronounces quickly. Both numbers "3" must take place on the first chair. The player who takes the place the first brings a point to his/her team. Numbers "3" return to their places. The instructor continues: "There were so many people at the bus stop, that only 2 people managed to take the bus. (The instructor marks out the words "two" and "bus".) All the rest must wait again for the bus. Now I see number 1… tram (both numbers "1" must take place on the second chair) etc.

Mardi Gras is a fun and joyful time of the year. Every Mardi Gras party should have at least one Mardi Gras game to play, if not many. Children have so much fun at the Chinese New Year parties when they play this delight Chinese NewYear's game. First, separate the guests into a few teams. Have an assortment of magazines (usually three to five per team), glue, scissors, and 11 x 14 pieces of construction paper for each team. Give each team a list of Chinese New Years celebration words such as calendar, dragons, fireworks, etc. Usually about 15 words will do. The object of the game is to find pictures that go with the words and glue them to the construction paper. The first team completed wins!

Another great Chinese New Year's game the children would enjoy is called Shot Put. For this game, have balloons filled up about 1/3rd with water. Then blow up the balloons about equal size. Each player must "shot put" (throw) as far as they possible can. The player who puts a shot the farthest is the winner! So don't forget to include the balloons, magazines, glue and construction as part of the Chinese New Year supplies.

In this game two persons go out of the room, and after agreeing together as to what they will represent, they come back in again. The game is completed when both the man and the object are guessed and then two others can leave the room to continue. Paste each on the white side of a 3x5 card. Hand out blank answer sheets to each player or team. Have everyone go around the room with an answer sheet and try to identify as many of the symbols as possible. The person (or team) who guesses the most correctly wins. A football themed party favor is fitting for the game winner.

Free Christmas Game: Reindeer Games
Reindeer Games will really get the competitive spirit going at your next Christmas party. You will need to decorate some clothes pins to look like reindeer using some googly eyes and small red felt circles to use as the nose. Give one reindeer clothes pin to each guest and have them clip it to their clothes. If one of the other guests hears them say "Merry Christmas" then they can take all of their clothes pins. The person with the most pins at the end of the game wins. It's extra fun to have wrapped Christmas party favors on a table. Then as guests win a game, they can choose which gift they want.

Free Christmas Game: Decorate the Christmas Tree
Decorate the Christmas Tree is a great office Christmas party game. Especially if it is a large office that has two different departments. Divide the players into two teams. Give each team a small Christmas tree and a box of assorted ornaments. The teams race to finish decorating their Christmas tree. The team to finish first wins the game. Another way to play this game is to have it as a contest to see who does the best job decorating their tree. Have a neutral person be the judge.
