Cornelius Library Improvements Pay Off

Paul G. Allen Family Foundation recently gave the Cornelius Public Library a $45,000 grant to promote targeted library services to Latinos. This continues a previous one year grant received last March from the Library Services and Technology Act through the Oregon State Library.

The funds support a bilingual library staff person to improve and market library services for Latinos in Cornelius. Since the beginning of the program, the library has received two other grants to get over 1,500 new Spanish language books. The usage of this collection increased 300%.

Maria Aguilar, the Latino Outreach Coordinator, has worked in the Washington County Library system for several years. This year's goals include implementing new ongoing programs such as "Bilingual book babies," a learning time for parents and children 0-2 and "Intercambio," a conversation group for adults learning English or Spanish.

The entire library has made great improvements in the last 2 years. Cornelis served almost 42,000 visitors in 2008 (a 50% increase over 2007) and checked out over 60,000 items.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided a $7,800 grant and the Friends of the Library provided a match to replace and add additional computers. A group of volunteers rearranged the materials within the library in May to emphasize the natural light and allow for more open space for group meetings and programs.

All this increased activity resulted in the county rewarding the Cornelius Library with a permanent funding increase of $34,000 which is being used to expand library hours.

Good news for westside library users. Cornelius Public Library has new, extended hours starting Monday, July 6th.

Every day, Cornelius will be open for an extra hour.

Sun	12pm – 5pm

Cedar Mill Bethany is now moved... across the street

After an amazing day of moving and final network installation and tweaking, the expanded Cedar Mill Community Library at Bethany opened to the public at 10 am Friday, June 12. Kudos to Roxanne Wilcox and the Bethany crew of staff and volunteers who moved the entire library of 30,000 items, shelves, computers, and furniture in about 4 hours.

The new library, 15325 NW Central Drive Suite J-8, is directly across the street from the old library. At 4,600 square feet, the new location is 2 and one-half times larger than the old space which opened July 2007.

They'll be having a 2nd birthday celebration next month on July 18th after the dust settles.

Beaverton has kids' book club kits

Thinking about starting a kids' book club this summer?

Beaverton City Library can help. They created Juvenile Book Club Kits.

These kits come with 8 copies of a book, a resource guide, further information about both the book and the author, questions (and answers), and some craft ideas.

These kits target Grades 3 to 5.

The kits are like regular books in that you can check them out for 3 weeks, and put a hold on them. Look them up by searching on Juvenile book club kit as the title, or Beaverton City Library Children's Division as author.

New Online Resource: World Book Discover

Easy-to-read articles accompanied by reading comprehension questions. 6/21: Tualatin’s Adult Summer Reading Kick-Off

Please join us Sunday, June 21 from 2–4 PM at the Tualatin Public Library as we kick-off the Adult Summer Reading program with a free concert with the Oregon Beetles. All ages are welcome.

The Oregon Beetles (formerly known as Runway 3) are a local band that covers Beatle tunes. In addition, there will be food and craft tables set up for adults to “Be Creative”, which is our summer reading theme for this year.

No matter how old or how young you are, Tualatin Public Library has a Summer Reading program for you. Our Adult Summer Reading Club is open to adults’ ages 18 and older.

Beginning June 1, for every book adults read, they can fill out an entry form either online at www.tualatinlibrary.org or in person at the library. Monthly winners will be drawn at random.

At the end of the summer we will draw from all entries for one grand prizewinner. The grand prize this year is a gift certificate for two adults to stay two nights at Kah-nee-ta High Desert Resort in Warm Springs, Oregon.

6/28: Teen guitar jam at Cedar Mill

Cedar Mill Community Library offers one of two teen-only music-related summer activities Sunday, June 28th, from 2–4 PM. The program's called Jamology.

Come, bring your guitar and get tips and tricks from two local musicians on the art of jamming. Because mixing your sound with other musicians can be hard initially.

It's an opportunity to learn about guitar-playing styles, experiment with different equipment for different sounds, and to meet and play with other teens.

Please know how to play basic chords and how to tune your guitar. And register in advance at (503) 644-0043 x112.

Clackamas County Library District Changes

Your Washington County Library service will CHANGE effective July 1, 2009 due to a change in library service area coverage.

Your Washington County library card is expiring because you live in a Clackamas County city that declined to participate in the new county-wide Library District that was approved by Clackamas County voters in November 2008. Washington County has a reciprocal agreement with neighboring counties that extends free borrowing privileges to all residents within their service areas. As of July 1, 2009, your area will not be included in the new Library District of Clackamas County and therefore you will no longer be covered by this agreement.

Residents of Damascus and Johnson City may visit any Washington County public library and purchase a card for an annual fee of $95 in order to continue library service. The fee is equivalent to the average amount of property taxes paid by residential households in Washington County to support countywide library service.

Bethany moves Thursday, June 11

The Cedar Mill Community Library at Bethany is moving across the street into a space two and a half times larger to serve their busy and growing community.

The Bethany branch will be closed until 1 PM Thursday June 11. Library services may be limited until the move is fully completed. For updates, check their website at http://www.cedarmill.plinkit.org/bethany-branch. And for pictures of preparing the new space, see CMCL's Flickr site.

6/16 - Beginning Embroidery with Jodi Cord at Garden Home

Garden Home Community Library invites you to join craft artist Jodie Cord for a Beginning Embroidery class, Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00 p.m.

Embroidery is a simple inexpensive way to embellish and personalize clothing and accessories, make toys, art and wall hangings. In this class you will learn all the basic stitches you need to get started: the back stitch, the split stitch, the french knot and the blanket stitch. It is a great craft for anybody able to use a sharp needle. All the necessary supplies will be provided. Each student will have the opportunity to make a stitch sampler and a small felt book.

5/10: OCAC Library's Summer Hours Begin

The library at Oregon College of Art & Craft will be closed Sunday May 10th and will begin its Summer Hours schedule (Tues–Thurs, 12-3pm) on Tuesday, May 12th.

Since the library will receive WCCLS courier service only Tuesdays through Thursdays, expect a little longer wait for holds placed on OCAC library materials over the summer.

OCAC library will return to its regularly scheduled hours after Labor Day when classes begin.

5/14: Digital Bookmobile visits Cedar Hills Crossing

WCCLS and the Library Information Network of Clackamas County are pleased to present the Digital Bookmobile, in a shopping center near you.

No, really.

On Thursday, May 14, from 10 AM–5 PM, the Digital Bookmobile will touch down at Cedar Hills Crossing, Cedar Hills Blvd between Hall and Jenkins, in Beaverton.

The Digital Bookmobile is a way for public libraries consortia like WCCLS and LINCC to promote the Library2Go service, which is downloadable audiobooks and video. These downloads are yours anytime. Pick from popular fiction and non-fiction audiobooks, movies, tv programs, and music videos as well. You can even choose audiobooks for your iPod. All you need is your WCCLS library card.

The 74-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer tours nationally and is a high-tech update of the bookmobiles that has served cities and towns for decades. The Digital Bookmobile is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high-definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players. Interactive computer stations give visitors an opportunity to search the digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample audiobooks and video from the library.

5/12: Molly Gloss at Garden Home Library

The Garden Home Community Library is pleased to host author Molly Gloss on Tuesday May 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Gloss will be giving a reading and discussion of her book, The Hearts of Horses.

Molly Gloss is a fourth-generation Oregonian who lives in Portland. Her novel The Jump-Off Creek was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for American Fiction, and a winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the Oregon Book Award.

The Dazzle of Day was named a New York Times Notable Book and was awarded the PEN Center West Fiction Prize. Wild Life won the James Tiptree Jr. Award and was chosen as the 2002 selection for "If All Seattle Read the Same Book."

The Hearts of Horses, published in 2007, is the novel of a young woman breaking horses for several ranchers in Eastern Oregon in the winter of 1917.

The Friends of the Hillsboro Public Library present their Spring Book Sale. It is held at the Hillsboro Main Library May 1-10, 2009 in the Main Library Meeting Room.

Items are added every day throughout the sale, so come early and come often.

Come in and browse any time during library open hours at the Hillsboro Main Library at 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway. The library (and sale) are open Monday through Friday 10-8, Saturday 10-6, and Sunday 12-6.

For your convenience, there is an ATM machine for the Main Library Lobby, where $1.40 of the $1.50 fee goes to the Friends of the Library.
