Tevez set to seal Man City switch

Tevez played his final game for Man Utd in the Champions League final.

Manchester City have agreed a five-year deal to sign former West Ham and Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez.

The 25-year-old Argentine forward, who left Old Trafford last month, will complete his move subject to a medical.

"It's terrific news," City boss Mark Hughes said. "He is an international of the highest class who possesses all the attributes to help drive us forward.

"This is yet another deal that shows the commitment of the owner to make this club the very best it can be."

Tevez, who will wear the number 32 shirt at Eastlands, spent a season with West Ham before joining United on an extended loan deal in 2007.

He started 99 league and cup matches for Sir Alex Ferguson's team and scored 34 goals, but decided to leave despite being offered a permanent contract.

Da Silva's Paraguay are on course for the 2010 World Cup finals

Sunderland have signed Paraguay captain Paulo da Silva on a three-year deal.

The defender, 29, has played more than 50 times for his country and is predominantly a right-sided defender who normally plays in central defence.

He joins from Mexican side Toluca where he was also captain and has previously played football in Europe with Perugia and Venezia in Italy.

Da Silva is new boss Steve Bruce's second signing following Fraizer Campbell's arrival over the weekend.

Bruce said: "I'm delighted to have signed a player of Paulo's experience.

"He is captain of his country and has played at the highest level in South America, so he will bring leadership qualities to our side."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not make any further signings during the summer.

United have brought in Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Bordeaux's Gabriel Obertan to replace departed forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

Ferguson revealed he had bid for Karim Benzema, who joined Real Madrid, but insisted he had no further targets.

"It is the end of our business," he said. "Stories about who we are supposed to be getting - forget it."

United pocketed £80m from Ronaldo's world record transfer to Real Madrid and the Old Trafford club had been expected to spend a sizeable proportion of the funds on new players.

Among those to be linked with a move to the Premier League champions are Brazilian forward Douglas Costa, French playmaker Franck Ribery, and Spain striker David Villa.

But Ferguson feels the market is now over-inflated and he does not want to pay over the odds for players.

Real Madrid, for example, have spent in excess of £170m this summer in capturing Kaka from AC Milan, Benzema from Lyon and Ronaldo.

And Ferguson added: "There are some amazing numbers being talked about, not all of them realistic. It is very difficult to get value now.

"In a way we benefited through the sale of Cristiano, although that figure was non-negotiable.

"But I feel we have a good squad, which meant there was no need for knee-jerk reactions.

"We asked about Benzema and we had a value for him. Lyon have done well because they got 42m euros but I think we took a sensible view."

Instead, Valencia has arrived from Wigan, 20-year-old winger Obertan has been recruited and Owen was signed on a free transfer after his contract with Newcastle expired.

And the England striker has been handed the number seven shirt - the shirt vacated by Ronaldo.

Owen will add extra experience to an attack that still boasts plenty of established talent in Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, plus youngsters Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda.

Ferguson hinted that Welbeck and Macheda, who scored vital goals at the end of last season, will be given opportunities to play their part.

"They are both young players - but young players with ability always get a chance here," added Ferguson.

Owen, meanwhile, has vowed to recapture his best form and show he will be an important part of the United team.

"I am hungry to do well and if this challenge doesn't create a hunger and put a spring in your step and a smile on your face then nothing will," he said.

"I honestly believe I can still do well in a top team like Manchester United."

Ferguson praised the desire of Owen to prove his critics wrong and is confident the 28-year-old can rediscover the scoring touch that made him one of Europe's most feared strikers.

"His experience is vital and with Michael you will see the experience he will give us in the penalty box," commented Ferguson.

"There is no question that he will score a lot of goals for us and he has been great for years and years.

"You always have to be aware of him in the last third."

The 43-year-old played for Millwall, Spurs and Manchester United and ended his career at Colchester last summer.

Chairman Chris McCarthy told the club website: "I'm really hopeful that between us we can it a reality. It's an enormously exciting prospect."

Sheringham recently played a celebrity game at Beckenham's Eden Park Avenue.

Hartson treated for brain cancer

Hartson scored 89 goals for Celtic during his five seasons at the club

Former Wales football international John Hartson is suffering from testicular cancer which has spread to his brain, it has been confirmed.

The 34-year-old striker, who spent five years with Celtic, was diagnosed at Swansea's Singleton Hospital on Sunday.

Hartson was capped 51 times for Wales during his career.

The hospital said in a statement the footballer would be starting a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy which would last "for many months".

Dr Gianfilippo Bertelli, consultant medical oncologist for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust, said: "Mr Hartson attended Singleton Hospital on Friday (10 July) displaying symptoms consistent with testicular cancer.

"A number of clinical tests were put in place and these have confirmed the presence of testicular cancer. Unfortunately, it has also been confirmed that this cancer has spread to Mr Hartson's brain.

"We are awaiting the results of further tests to establish a full picture of Mr Hartson's diagnosis.

"We will be commencing a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy as soon as possible and foresee many months of treatment.

It is very difficult for us to understand what John is going through at the moment, but we will offer any support we can to a great Celtic player

Celtic statement

"We realise that Mr Hartson is a much-loved figure and there are many fans and well-wishers who will be keen to hear news of his progress.

"However, while treatment is ongoing we would ask that the privacy of Mr Hartson, and all the patients who attend our hospital, is respected."

Swansea-born Hartson's former clubs include West Ham, Arsenal, Wimbledon, Coventry City and Luton Town.

His family released a statement saying: "All the family, and John's friends, are doing all we can to support him and praying that he will make a full recovery.

"John is getting excellent care from the oncologists at the hospital as he begins his treatment.

"John is a family man and we appreciate all the messages of support we have already received."

'Well-liked'

His former club Celtic issued a statement of support.

"Clearly, everyone at the club fully supports John and his family at this extremely difficult time.

"It is very difficult for us to understand what John is going through at the moment, but we will offer any support we can to a great Celtic player."

Peter Rafferty, president of the Affiliation of Celtic Supporters' Clubs said: "He was one of our major heroes and really well-liked and appreciated by the fans. He always gave 100%.

"It's so sad that something like this could happen to someone so young. He is still a very young man and has a young family.

"It's a real tragedy and we just wish him well with his treatment."

Articulate and knowledgeable

Hartson was signed by then Celtic manager Martin O'Neill in 2001 for £6m and spent five years at Parkhead, scoring 89 goals.

He was voted player of the year by his fellow professionals and the Scottish Football Writers Association.

During his international career, he scored 14 goals before stepping down in February 2006 to concentrate on his club football.

Hartson made his Wales debut in March 1995 in an away match against Bulgaria, often leading the line as a lone striker, until his last game in November 2005 against Cyprus.

He began his senior career at Luton in 1992 as a 17-year-old and the Llansamlet-born player's bustling style soon caught the eye of bigger clubs.

Arsenal paid £2.5m for Hartson in January 1995.

A £3.3m move to their London rivals West Ham followed two years later, although that stay was marred by an altercation with team-mate Eyal Berkovic.

In 1999 Wimbledon paid a bumper £7.5m for Hartson, while spells at Coventry, Celtic, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich - on loan - followed before he announced his retirement as a player in February 2008.

When the 6ft 1in target man retired he said his biggest regret was not having played for his beloved Swansea City, the local club he had supported since a boy.

Since his retirement as a player, Hartson has proved himself an articulate and knowledgeable football commentator for media outlets including the BBC.

Hartson seemed destined to move into football management and has been linked with vacant posts at the likes of Falkirk, Swansea and East Stirlingshire.

Kompany may miss start of season

Midfielder Kompany has suffered long-term problems

Manchester City midfielder Vincent Kompany is set to miss the start of the Premier League season because he is scheduled to undergo foot surgery.

Belgian international Kompany, 23, has been forced to return from City's pre-season training camp in Bavaria.

He needed injections and wore specially adapated boots last season in an attempt to cure the problem.

Boss Mark Hughes told City's website: "If he has to have an operation Vincent will miss the start of the season."

Kompany joined City from Hamburg in August 2008 for an undisclosed fee.

Hughes added: "We sent him to a consultant surgeon at the end of last season and he recommended injecting the toe and giving him six weeks' complete rest but he was suffering the same amount of pain again in training in Germany.

"He's been back to see the surgeon now. We hoped the rest would cure it but it's a bit more complex than that. It's important that we address it now and make sure Vince is fit for the rest of the season.

"We nursed him through to the point where he had to concede that he just couldn't carry on. He had numerous needles into the joint but he stuck with it bravely. He did really well for the team."

Levet feels he has a chance of springing a surprise at Turnberry

Thomas Levet has been given a last-minute call-up to play at the Open Championship after Brett Quigley decided not to compete at Turnberry.

The American won the final qualifying spot at the John Deere Classic on Sunday but has opted to play in a USPGA Tour event in Milwaukee instead.

Frenchman Levet was disqualified from last month's qualifier at Sunningdale after signing an incorrect scorecard.

But he was top of the reserve list for the Open after a number of withdrawals.

The Open, which starts on Thursday, will be without Phil Mickelson, Trevor Immelman, Robert Karlsson and Tim Wilkinson who all pulled out last week, while Japan's Shingo Katayama withdrew on Sunday.

Levet, who lost out to Ernie Els in a five-hole playoff for the Open at Muirfield in 2002, is ranked 82nd in the world and had been unaware he was so high up the reserve list for Turnberry.

There are five players ahead of him in the world rankings - Australian Aaron Baddeley and Americans Fred Couples, Pat Perez, Kevin Na and Mark Wilson - who would have taken Quigley's place if only they had either entered for the Open or not withdrawn from qualifying events.

"I think I've got a chance," said Levet after being told that he was in the field for Turnberry. "I'm playing well and I hit the ball low, which you need to do at the Open.

Quigley's decision not to travel to Scotland was partly based on the fact that he is due to attend a memorial service on Tuesday for the wife of fellow player Chris Smith, who was killed in a car crash three weeks ago.

"My heart's not into playing the British," he said. "I know that sounds crazy for a major, the Open at Turnberry, and I love the golf over there.

"There are a million reasons to go - I just feel like it's going to be better for me to go to Milwaukee and go with my family," he said.

Australian John Senden is now first reserve for the Open and is in with a good chance of playing as the wife of England's Ross Fisher is expecting a baby this week and India's Jeev Milkha Singh is struggling with a rib injury.

Fisher, who finished eighth at the Scottish Open, insists he will leave the Open the moment he has any news that the baby is coming.

"I'm looking forward to the Open and it's the most important tournament I will play in a calendar year, but what will be will be," he said.

"It would be great to play and the ideal would be to two-putt to win next Sunday, make a short winner's speech and then fly home.

"But there are plenty more Opens. I will be straight out whatever day it is - it's something I don't want to miss and I'm sure it's something Jo doesn't want me to miss."

Ryan Shawcross has said he is happy to remain a Stoke City player, despite being linked with a move to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Reports in national newspapers suggested Spurs were interested in signing the 21-year-old centre-back.

Shawcross told BBC Radio Stoke after the 2-0 friendly loss at Nantwich: "I'm not really fussed about the rumours.

Graham Onions and Steve Harmison will be among the names up for consideration when England select their squad for the second Ashes Test on Monday.

The squad will be announced at 1430 BST, Onions was 12th man for the drawn first Test against Australia, while Harmison was not even in the squad.

Spinner Monty Panesar appears the most likely man to lose out, though a calf problem could cost Stuart Broad a spot.

Ian Bell is likely to miss out again as England keep faith with their batsmen.

That means a top order that accumulated just 99 runs between them in two innings is expected to remain intact.

Andrew Strauss (30 and 17), Alastair Cook (10 and six) and Ravi Bopara (35 and one) disappointed in Cardiff, but are likely to lead the innings again at Lord's - where England have not beaten Australia since 1934.

Kevin Pietersen, despite being criticised for the manner of his dismissal in both innings, Paul Collingwood, Matt Prior and Andrew Flintoff are certainties to be named in the starting XI again, meaning any changes to the side are most likely to be in the bowling department.

Unlike Cardiff, Lord's is not traditionally a spinner's pitch, so the England selectors will decide between Panesar and Graeme Swann, with the latter likely to get the nod despite not taking a wicket in the first Test thanks to his fine form before that match.

Henson 'to retire', claims report

Wales and Ospreys centre Gavin Henson is ready to quit the sport because he is disillusioned with it, according to a report in The Sun newspaper.

The report says Henson, 27, has told his bosses he intended to retire but that he has been urged to reconsider.

The Ospreys have yet to comment having earlier said they expected him to return to training on Monday.

BBC Sport understands Ospreys bosses last week met Henson, who suffered a series of injuries last season.

He also missed the Lions' tour of South Africa.

The centre has been given an extra month off before being expected to return to training along with those players who toured Canada and United States with Wales at the season's end.

"The work ethic has been excellent, the players have really bought into what we are trying to do during pre-season and there has been a huge amount of effort being put in," he told the Ospreys website.

"That's not to say that there isn't plenty of room for improvement in the group, but I would expect to see the results of our work over the next few weeks.

"We've put in place a four-week programme that will see a gradual build-up in the amount and intensity of training over three weeks, with the fourth week dropping off a bit, so next week is going to be a very difficult week for the players.

"They will be worked hard but it's controlled and part of a carefully structured programme to get the best results out of them and because they have bought into it and understand the purpose of what they are doing they will give it everything.

"The first phase has been about trying to improve player muscle mass and body composition, as well as base-line fitness work.

"Moving on, there will be a lot more explosive work and speed work done over the next couple of weeks.

"The Wales players returning next week will start the four-week cycle from week one, as will the Lions when they start back in August."

Masked raiders have targeted the home of Manchester United footballer Federico Macheda.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the property on Washway Road in Sale in the early hours of Sunday following reports of a robbery.

Two men stole cash and jewellery before running out of the house, police said.

A friend of the 17-year-old Italian striker suffered a minor cut to his head during the robbery, the spokesman added. Inquiries are ongoing.

Iqbal scored his maiden Test century for Bangladesh against the West Indies

Tamim Iqbal's maiden Test century helped Bangladesh build a challenging target for the West Indies on day four of the first Test in St Vincent.

Iqbal fell for 128 as a late collapse threatened the Bangladesh charge, but they finished the day on 321-5 - a lead of 252 over a second-string Windies XI.

Meanwhile, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said players who boycotted the Test must apologise by Wednesday.

If not they will not be considered for September's ICC Champions Trophy.

The West Indies Players Association (Wipa) had said its members were no longer prepared to play without contracts which led to 13 players pulling out of the series against Bangladesh, including regular captain Chris Gayle and vice-captain Denesh Ramdin.

Armstrong hints at return to Tour

Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong has hinted he will compete in next year's Tour de France after coming out of retirement to ride in the 2009 event.

Ponting criticises England's delaying tactics

Australia captain Ricky Ponting criticised England's delaying tactics after the hosts clung on for a draw in a thrilling end to the first Test.

England sent their 12th man and physio on to the field in the closing stages in an apparent attempt to waste time.

"I don't think that was required," said Ponting. "I am not sure what the physio was doing out there - I didn't see him call for any physio.

"I'm sure others will take it up with the England hierarchy as they should."

With Australia running out of time to claim their final wicket, England sent 12th man Bilal Shafayat down to the playing area to give batsman James Anderson some new gloves.

When he returned with England physio Steve McCaig after the next over they were swiftly ushered off by some angry Australian players.

"He had changed his gloves the over before and his glove is not going to be too sweaty in one over," added Ponting. "But it's not the reason we didn't win.

"We haven't really done anything wrong and we've got a lot to take out of this game. I'm disappointed we didn't win, I thought we played well enough.

"There are four Tests to go in the series and we will have to play at this level if we want to win."

When Paul Collingwood's heroic 74 came to an end, there were still more than 40 minutes of the match remaining for England's final pair of Anderson and Panesar to negotiate.

Renault's Fernando Alonso believes he will be a podium contender for the rest of the season after a much-improved performance at the German Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was restricted to seventh after spending much of the race in traffic but the pace of his updated car was clear when he set the fastest lap.

"It's definitely a step forward," the double world champion told BBC Sport.

"We had the potential to be on the podium. We've been quicker than Ferrari all weekend and Massa was third."

Renault brought a new front wing to the Nurburgring and Alonso said it had made a big difference to the performance of the car.

He was among the front-runners in the early stages of qualifying, but he spun in the mixed conditions and failed to get into the top 10 shoot-out.

But once he had cleared some slower cars in the race, he was the fastest driver on the track in the closing stages and was pushing the two championship-leading Brawn cars in the final laps.

"I got fastest lap - that's very positive," he said. "I'm quite happy with the race. There's a little bit of frustration because two points is not enough for us, but I am quite optimistic and confident for the coming races.

"We need to concentrate on Saturday, to be in the top five, top six in qualifying and then after that I think the race pace is good enough to keep those positions.

"If we are qualifying 10th, we are out of position in the race because we are quicker than the cars in front of us but we have traffic. Hopefully in Budapest we can improve Saturday."

Alonso added: "The improvement is down to the new parts. We have definitely improved the car. Sometimes you make some changes to the car and you cannot really feel it and the positions remains more or less the same.

"But it seems this weekend the parts we used really work and finally we did a step forward."

Jenson Button says he must beat rivals Red Bull at the next Grand Prix race in Hungary to boost his world title push.

The Brawn driver finished fifth behind a Red Bull one-two at Sunday's German Grand Prix to see his lead in the championship cut to 21 points.

"We need to beat the Red Bulls in Hungary," said Button, who has won in six of nine races so far this season.

"We have to hope that in Hungary we are strong because we can't keep doing this - this is hurting now."

After stringing together four back-to-back victories between Bahrain and Turkey, Button has seen his momentum falter, finishing sixth in Britain and fifth at the Nurburgring.

A muddled pit stop also proved costly for his team-mate Rubens Barrichello's world title chances.

The Brazilian finished sixth in Germany and was leapfrogged by both Red Bull drivers in the championship standings.

Button now has a 21-point advantage over Sebastian Vettel with Mark Webber, who claimed victory in Germany, 22.5 points adrift.

"The lead hasn't got that much smaller but it's a different person in second now," added Button.

"It's going to continue like this at the next race but it's a circuit where we will be more competitive with the Red Bulls - and we need to be."

Button took some comfort from the fact that Webber's victory means Red Bull have yet to decide to concentrate their efforts on just one of their drivers with eight races to go.

Vettel, who collected wins in China and Britain, had emerged as Button's chief rival but Webber's maiden victory on his team-mate's home soil has also put the Australian in the frame for the title race.

"Vettel has got his team-mate right behind him which is probably a good thing for me because they're taking points off each other," said the 29-year-old.

"If Vettel had won here that would have been a disaster for me.

"But we support both drivers - that's the way racing should be - and Red Bull are doing the same.

"I'm looking forward to Hungary now. Hopefully we'll get a few new part and it's going to be hotter, which will suit our cars.

"I'm not going to put any pressure on the team because we know what we need to do."

Webber believes Red Bull's decision to treat both of their drivers' equally for now is helping to keep alive the championship for the Milton Keynes-based team.

"It's rare to have two drivers performing quite so closely," said Webber, who won his first GP after 130 starts.

"Putting your eggs in one basket, it might help, but you could do that for two or three races and then he could have a couple of 'did not finish'.

"It's a decision the team have to make later on but both titles are up for grabs, there's no question about that."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says the team are still some way from asking either of their drivers to support the other in chasing down Button.

"It's very tight between the two of them and it would be wrong to put our focus on Sebastian at this stage," said Horner.

"We support them equally until a team when one has to play a supporting role. Or maybe it will go down to the last race. Who knows?

"The Red Bull philosophy is all about fairness."

Gatti retire from boxing in 2007 with an exciting reputation

Brazilian police have questioned the wife of a former world boxing champion, Arturo Gatti, after he was found dead in a hotel in north-eastern Brazil.

The Canadian's body was discovered on Saturday at a holiday resort where he had gone with his wife and son.

Authorities say Gatti, 37, may have been strangled with the strap of a handbag and had a mark on his head.

He was IBF super-featherweight champion in 1995 and WBC light-welterweight champion in 2004, and retired in 2007.

His three-fight series with Micky Ward in 2002 and 2003 established him as one of the world's most exciting fighters.

Gatti had been on holiday in the Porto de Galinhas resort with his Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, and their one-year-old son.

Police said there were inconsistencies in Ms Rodrigues' statement but that she denied any involvement in her husband's death.

Gatti's body was reportedly found in the couple's holiday apartment.

However, police remain unsure how Ms Rodrigues stayed in the apartment for around 10 hours - with the couple's one-year-old son - without noticing that her husband was dead.

Detectives are also investigating reports that the couple had been arguing before returning to their room on Friday evening and that Gatti had been drunk.

The couple are said to have rented the apartment for a month in order to have a "second honeymoon" but only arrived on Friday, reports the BBC's Gary Duffy, in Sao Paulo.

Glittering career

Gatti's career spanned 49 fights and he won 40 of them, 31 by knockout.

He first fought Micky Ward in May 2002 and the pair traded devastating blows for 10 rounds before Ward earned the split decision from the judges.

The rematch was just as brutal, with Gatti knocking Ward down in the third round with a big right. Ward not only recovered from the blow, which broke Gatti's hand, but managed to go the distance. This time, Gatti earned a unanimous decision.

Gatti and Ward had their decider at Boardwalk Hall in June 2003, Ward knocked Gatti to the floor in the sixth round, but despite fighting with his right hand broken again, Gatti managed to win the decision.

Ward and Gatti became close friends toward the end of their careers.

Ward told The Ring: "I'm walking around in a daze. I'm just dazed by it all. You fight a guy, you go to war with them, and there is a respect there. But with me and Arturo, it was greater.

"There was a real bond between us. It's why hearing this, hearing what happened to Arturo is like a piece of you is gone, because we shared so much of everything in the ring. We were friends, close friends."

Gatti eventually retired two years ago following a seventh-round knockout defeat by Alfonso Gomez.

Kathy Duva, of Gatti's promoters Main Events, described his death as an "unspeakable tragedy".

She said: "His entire boxing career he fought with us, we've known him since he was 17. He just captured the imagination of so many people."

Duva added: "I remember walking away from his last fight and somebody walked up to him in the casino late at night and congratulated him.

"He said 'Why did he congratulate me?' and I said 'He was excited to meet you' and he kind of looked very surprised by that. He had no idea what an icon he was or how much he meant to people."
