My grandkids visited a zoo today and had a great time. It was just a little zoo, not a big city zoo, but they got to see real tigers, alligators, a baby bear, and even pet baby deer. My granddaughter who just turned two had her first experience with being up that close to the animals she only knows through her story books, and she loved it. My grandson's favorite thing about the zoo was being able to touch and pet the baby deer. What a wonderful experience for them! My grandson and his friend had a blast as well on all the little trails throughout the zoo. All in all my daughter and son in law felt this was a zoo worth visiting and plan to return again. Summer Fun

It's cool out today here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It hardly feels like a summer day, in fact, I found myself munching soy butter and crackers while watching the Bachelorette last night on TV, and it felt very much like a fall night. You know, winter mode setting in. The lazy days of autumn where all you want to do is hibernate indoors with a soft blanket and some good TV. But alas, it is not even yet July! I hoped to awaken today to a sunny day but mother nature decided to play another trick and gave us yet another cool, rather dreary day. I suppose the one good thing is that it's a good day for working. Otherwise I'd find myself longing to be outdoors.
Summers here are way too short, and so when it's sunny and warm out I find it difficult to stay indoors. I'd much rather soak up some vitamin D and take in the beauty this area has to offer, and it is very beautiful here. Fresh air and fresh water are plentiful.
What are some of the things you love about summer? Do you love the sun? The festivals and parades that take place? There are several festivals and celebrations that take place in this area including 4th of July parades and fireworks, Pioneer Days in Negaunee, Art on the Rocks, The Italian Fest, and Blueberry Festival.

I love dogs! Apparently so do others as dogs are the number one pet in the world. Not surprised? Here's a bit more dog trivia that might surprise you!

The smallest dog breed is the Chihuahua. The tallest breed is the Irish wolfhound. The St. Bernard is the heaviest breed and can weigh about 200 pounds!

Dogs have 321 bones and 42 permanent teeth.

A dog's sense of smell is 37 times stronger than a humans.

There are over 200 breeds of dogs.

Dalmations are born pure white but develop the spots as they mature.

The only barkless dog in the world is the Basenji.

The oldest known breed of dog is the Saluki, which were raised as hunting dogs by the Egyptians.

A dog takes from 10 to 30 breaths a minute.

The oldest known dog lived to be 29 years old.

The Lhasa Apso was used by monks to guard temples.

A Great Dane can eat up to 8 1/2 pounds of food per day!

As Father's Day approaches I find myself thinking alot about my dad who passed away six years ago. As time goes on, I find it harder on Father's Day instead of easier. I miss him so much, but am comforted by the good memories and feeling confident that he knew how much he was loved.
Show your dad how much he's loved every day, and especially on Father's Day. Some of the things you can do to show dad how much he's loved and appreciated are to write him a poem or a heartfelt letter, make him breakfast in bed, cook his favorite dinner or dessert, help with his chores, give him lots of hugs and kisses, buy him dinner at his favorite restaurant, or present him with a cool T-shirt, hat, or mug that shows you think he's the best dad ever! Most of all, spend time with your dad, because giving your time and heart is the best gift of all.
For the younger set, wearing a T-shirt that says "My Dad is Best" or "My Dad Rocks" is a great idea.

Teacher Gifts and Apparel

Did I ever mention that my daughter is a kindergarten teacher? Well, she is and has been for a number of years. When she was a child, she was always setting up little libraries for the neighborhood kids in the old barn in the back yard or playing school, and it was always her dream to be a teacher, so I'm not surprised that's the career path she chose. When she was in school I didn't have a clue just how much a teacher does! Until you are a teacher yourself or you know someone who is a dedicated teacher, you don't really stop to think about, and perhaps couldn't possibly know, all the hours a good teacher puts into "her kids". It seems to me that every conversation I have with my daughter is related to her kids, her classroom, how she can make it better, how she can teach better, more effectively, more creatively. She spends her time at night after her own children are in bed printing off lessons, cutting out art projects, dying macaroni, baking cookies or cupcakes, and the numerous other chores that come with teaching a kindergarten class. Teachers spend so many hours a day with your child, and no doubt the person your child becomes will be in a big part a result of having spent so much time with his teacher. My daughter spends so much of her own money on cute things to make the classroom brighter, on name tags, paper to send home notes, Clorox wipes to make sure the pencils and scissors are wiped down so as not to spread germs. She buys snowpants and mittens and hats on sale for those children who come to school unequipped or have lost theirs somewhere along the way, she buys snacks for those who are without a snack. Even in the summer months she is busy planning, cleaning her classroom and organizing from top to bottom, gathering all the papers and notes necessary for the beginning of the year, and thousands of other little chores that add up to weeks of work. Yes, until my daughter became a teacher, I did not appreciate teachers the way they deserve to be appreciated. Now if I hear someone say teachers have it easy because they get the summers off, I laugh, and I defend the fact that their summers off are hardly that at all. Please show appreciation to your child's teacher who is such a big influence in his life. We have some gifts that teachers might enjoy getting!

Graduation 2009

It feels like just yesterday when my kids were entering kindergarten, and soon my little grandson will be graduating from preschool and entering kindergarten in the fall. He has loved his experiences in preschool and was blessed to have such wonderful teachers the past two years. His preschool graduation is soon, and of course I'll be there to see him graduate on his special day. Graduation is a special event in a young person's life whether graduating from preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, high school, or college. It's an end of times, the start of times. It's a feeling of having learned, accomplished, and looking forward to the next step in one's life with anticipation and hope.

Easter T-shirts for Kids and Adults

Easter will be here before we know it. I'm looking forward to the arrival of spring along with it. The winter has been much too long with too much snow, and I'm ready to take long walks in the fresh air and sunshine, see the beauty of the first buds on the trees, the tender flowers unfolding from the frozen earth. I love to open windows in the spring and let the air inside. It seems to bring new life to the house and to me.
My grandson is looking forward to Easter, and as he does with all holidays he's busy making Easter decorations. So far he's helped to make an Easter tree and has made numerous eggs from colored foam for the refrigerator and an Easter house which was a craft kit for kids from Michaels. He looks forward to the Easter bunny bringing him goodies and especially to finding the plastic eggs the bunny hides around the house. His baby sister who is getting close to two years old now hasn't got a clue what Easter is, but once it arrives I'm sure she'll find it delightful as well.

St. Patrick's Day T-shirts and Gifts

It's almost Valentine's Day, the day of love, the day of chocolates and valentine cards and sentiments, a day some look forward to with excitement, another looks forward to reluctantly.
The next major holiday is St. Patrick's Day. I celebrated last St. Patrick's Day in Chicago, IL. My son in law was there for his fantasy baseball get together, and my daughter, the grandkids, and I toured the immediate area surrounding our motel on St. Patrick's Day. Like us, there was a lot of tourists and I suppose locals as well out and about that day, and most everyone seemed to have either a St. Patrick's Day T-shirt, button, or at least was wearing green. Although we didn't get to see the parade, we did get to see the dyed green Chicago River. It was exciting. I'm not sure why but it was. I went back to Chicago again in August and spent a lot of time walking around the downtown area, and the river is actually much more beautiful in the summer than when green, but still, it's a tradition and traditions are fun!
What is the origin of St. Patrick's Day? Taken from history.com:

St. Patrick is believed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan himself, St. Patrick is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.
The modern secular holiday is based on the original Christian saint's feast day also thought to be the date of the saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants to the United States began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766.
Today, the tradition continues with people from all walks and heritages by wearing green, eating Irish food, and attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is bursting with folklore; from the shamrock to the leprechaun and to pinching those that are not wearing green.

Valentine's Day T-shirts and Gifts

Another holiday is close at hand, that being Valentine's Day. For some it is romantic and special, for others it is a holiday to be scorned. For me, it's a holiday to reflect on love, not necessarily romantic love, but love in general, and I am blessed to be loved. If you follow my blog you know that I often speak of my little sunshines, my grandkids. My grandson who is five loves making valentine decorations out of heart shaped doilies, stickers, glitter, and glue. He looks forward to shopping for Valentines to reflect himself, printing his name ever so carefully on all the special valentines to his preschool friends. Some new kid stuff!

It's been a while since I last posted. I've been hibernating! The temperature here right now is a frigid minus 4 degrees and it's barely dark out yet so I'm sure it'll be getting much colder. I haven't been outside for days except to empty the trash, and I don't miss it. Until it warms up I'm cozy right where I am. Although I must admit that I am starting to pine for some adult conversation that is not via the phone or online.
My grandson spent the night here a couple nights ago. We had fun, playing Mickey Mouse yahtzee, watched a Scooby Doo movie together, played Scooby Doo which was basically lots of blocks and stuff scooby toys enacting the movie we had just watched, and we read a few books together. In the closet. Where he slept. Yes, that's right, he slept in the closet. He's just a little guy yet, just turned five years old, so I think the idea of sleeping here in a bedroom by himself was a bit much for him. He suggested he sleep in the closet, sort of like a camp, a lion's den maybe. So we moved everything out of the closet floor area (thankfully I don't own a lot of clutter!) and we spread out soft blankets on the carpeted floor, got him a pillow, blankets for covering up, a nightlight close by, and a cup of water in case he got thirsty during the night. I read him some books and he drifted off into slumberland faster than you can say "goodnight, love you!". For some reason he sleeps very well here, better than he does at home. I'm not sure why...maybe he can't see the light of day when in the closet. LOL
In case you haven't guessed, I love kids, and I love their creativity and imaginations. They amuse me. They surprise me. They make me laugh, and most of all they make my heart smile. My grandkids are my sunshine. When I design for Toddler's Place, I usually have them in mind, wondering if what I'm designing is something they would like, relate to, just as we relate to what we wear as adults.
I added quite a lot of designs to my Toddler's Place store in the last day. Check out some of the new things for kids, hope you find something you like!

Odds and Ends

My thoughts are scattered today, remembering the holidays and various special moments, having trouble concentrating on being back at work and having to discipline myself into not vegging out in front of the TV. Yes, for someone who rarely watches television I somehow turned into a bit of a couch potato during the holiday season, allowing myself a lot of rest and relaxation and too many holiday treats to go along with watching cheesey Christmas movies late into the night. It's a good thing I gave away all the holiday baking I did because I think I would have enjoyed it way too much. A dear friend did send me a cheese package that had some delicious little tortes and cakes and I do confess to having eaten most of them myself. Thank goodness they are gone!
And so today it is back to work for me, forcing myself to get some new designs up and get back to my blogging, google feeds, twittering, and everything else that goes along with being an online storekeeper, entrepreneur, T-shirt designer, affiliate marketer.
While visions of my grandchildren's happy faces float around in my mind, I am busy uploading new Valentine's Day designs to my Valentine's Day gallery. I am designing with them in mind, thinking what they'd like to wear, what they'd look cute in. It's always so amazing to me how quickly time flies from one holiday to the next. One moment it seems to be Halloween and now here it is in a flash of what feels like a few days but in reality is a few months and soon it will be Valentine's Day.

Christmas Gifts From a Five Year Old

My grandson who turned five just a couple of weeks ago has been on my mind all night. He is on my mind a lot regardless, simply because he's my little buddy and one of the very most wonderful things in my life (my granddaughter and kids ranking right up there as well!), but tonight my daughter related a story to me that has left me smiling and warm inside.
Christmas through the eyes of a child, not just any child, this child, my grandson who always manages even when he's not trying, to make me see just how creative he is, how thoughtful and caring.
Tonight, on his own, he got out five little white paper bags and proceeded to make Christmas presents for his family. I can't tell you what is in his daddy's paper sack because his daddy was at work when the rest of the gifts were opened and so his remained unopened the last I heard.
For his mommy, he gave a can of caffeine free diet Coke and some stickers. Pretty thoughtful as she loves the diet Coke and being a teacher I guess he knows she uses stickers a lot.
For his baby sister who is 1 1/2, he gave a cracker and a picture he drew of a fairy. She loved it. Crackers are her very favorite, so again, he put in a lot of thought and the gift was a success. For his dog he gave several dog treats. The dog loves anything and everything, even things a goat wouldn't probably eat, so again, the gift was met with great appreciation.
Now this is where it gets a bit funny.
The family has a fish, a huge old fish, a lone fish in an aquarium, a fish that supposedly can live for more than 15 years, and it has already been around for at least ten that I am aware of. My son in law got this fish while he was in college, in fact, one time over the years the fish actually jumped out of the tank, landed on the floor, and they thought it was dead. So, they were in no big rush to scoop it up and "dispose" of it. When they finally did about 15 minutes later they realized it was actually still alives so they threw it back into the fish tank and the fish remains alive to this day, years and years later.
So, what DOES a five year old give to this fish, this fish that had no name until he named it Lyle one day not that long ago? What can a little boy possibly give to his fish Lyle for Christmas that can fit into a white paper sack? I must say he did indeed put thought into this gift. For Lyle the fish, he gave his movie, The Night Before Christmas, so Lyle can watch it from inside his tank. Now tell me that's not cute!
I can hardly wait to hear tomorrow what his daddy got in his sack.
It's a good lesson for all of us. Give what you know someone likes. Give something that is "them", that they are interested in, that they can relate to, that shows thought was put into it.

On to part three of the My Favs, Their Favs segment. Today I am browsing the galleries of Cowpie Creek Gifts. If you are looking for fun, colorful, eye catching designs this shop has what you are looking for. Oh, and did I mention funny? There are so many designs that I see when browsing this designer's galleries that make me smile or make me laugh out loud...hard. It's going to be tough for me to pick only three designs because I have so many favorites when it comes to these galleries.
Because I am drawn to kids and kids designs, my first favorite is from her Cowpie Creek gallery. It's colorful, cute, and I believe it portrays just how kids feel!

In yesterday's post I mentioned how I often wonder when browsing the galleries of other Union Eight members if they have their favorites, and so I asked each of them to email me three of their favorite designs and I'd post three of my favs as well. Today I am looking through the gallery of TeeShirtsTShirts Awesome Tee Shirts and Gifts. It's not going to be easy for me to pick three favorite designs as there are so many that I love!
