Fred Fowler, aka Nuroc, rarely writes the same way twice, and over the last 7 years he has used this restlessness as a very specific prism through which to view his ongoing visual investigation of the Word, and knowledge systems and symbolism of the ancients and moderns - both common and great. Exposure to art from Oceania and Papua new Guinea at an early age has led Fred to examine patterns, language, imagery and meaning as it appears in traditional societies, and apply the learning to his contribution and deciphering of the native urban culture he inhabits.The great New York graffiti artist and theoretician Rammelzee (widely acknowledged as the inventor of Wild Style, and an important influence on Fowler) has said "Knowledge knowledge knowledge, the elevation of Wild Style knowledge is concluded as a SYMBOL DESTROYER, ARMORED, MEDIEVAL MECHANISM". He is not talking about academic knowledge but about the personal need to be curious about the world and incorporate all what fascinates you into the mix.

Living by that sword, Highland Chamber is the long awaited exhibition by Fred Fowler, honed by years of freestyle street writing and incorporating camouflaged iconoclasm with styles influenced by Oceanic art, the dissection of pervasive corporate symbolism, and pattern making as both guardian and giver of knowledge.

On the back of a sell out VCA Grad show and the recent exhibition of his video work in Berlin, Warsaw and Rotterdam, Rus Kitchin’s latest show, Take the long way home, continues the evolution of work that Kitchin partially locates in his active involvement within Melbourne’s graffiti culture of the late 80’s, and early 90’s.

Rus is part of an influential and pioneering group of artists who exhibited in the seminal First National Aerosol Art Exhibition - Pump up the Can! in 1991, and his work has been exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria and is held in a number of private and public collections.

Whilst Kitchin’s work embodies the spontaneity and expression of street culture, he doesn’t confine himself to the often generic aesthetics and expression that have come to be recognised as the visual landscape of graffiti today. Through his exploration of counter-cultural voices and ancient and contemporary humanist philosophy and icons, Kitchin presents an individual outlook on the human condition.

Late last year, a couple of Toorak seniors went down for forging Rover Thomas paintings, and selling them through auction houses. They made more than $300,000 before getting busted. There is a lot I like about this case. I like the balls it took to go through with the idea. I like the surreal nature of fronting up to auction houses, and in a great performative work, convincing a lot of ‘experts’ that these were ‘real’ Rovers’. One painting alone went for $130,000. I wonder how Ivan and Pamela celebrated this sale? With champagne, and a nice dinner out? Such a cheeky secret. Such a turn on. Its conceptual friggin’ art. And I’d say (not that I know much about the law) that with a different defence strategy (i.e. art prank), they could have gotten off with a very public rap on the knuckles. I wonder how they are both doing in jail, Pamela and Ivan. I wonder if she is still painting, or performing?

I painted some of my forgeries of forgeries during the recent heatwave. 41 degrees, full afternoon sun. And as I dotted away, I thought about Rover - his life, his art. I wondered if Pamela ever daydreamed about any of this as she forged away. After successfully shifting the works, did she start to spend the money in her head while she painted? Whilst I forged my forgeries, I thought of how many people haven’t been sprung passing their own work off as someone else’s. Because it’s all work. Genuine work. And the bigger the name, the higher the return. There is a big market for Rover Thomas’ paintings, but it’s best if all markets self regulate, no?

And what about Rover? A friend of his, Don Mcleod, remembers accompanying Thomas on a trip to Melbourne in the early 90’s, - ‘he identified works attributed to him in galleries that he didn’t think he had painted.’ As for forgeries of his work, he also said ‘Thomas might have approved, because all he was trying to do was tell his stories.’ No?

I reckon now the Liberto’s have their own stories to tell. I’m gunna visit her in jail, maybe take her some paints.
How will she render this new landscape?

All the other stuff in my show is copied too, but I signed my own name.

KILL PIXIE cut his teeth publishing his art without permission on the streets of Sydney, Australia.Growing rapidly in maturity by working with no respect for slumber, Kill Pixie is un-compromised by the establishment, and is an uninhibited and original figure in contemporary art.

Trash is treasure

In the studio his work on hand-made wooden boxes in ink, watercolour, acrylic and resin coating has attained much attention, his mediums recently have included works on paper and sculpture. Currently, much of the work is influenced by indigenous cultures and informed by the folk art they create.

Group Decision

“I am taking from the old and and new and creating my own idiosyncratic characters and landscapes.” He adds “It’s a futuristic twist on older times. I also like to show in my painting different styles of communication, from one place to another, and create a freedom of dialogue between the characters.”

Kill Pixie has had several solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne and has exhibited in group shows worldwide including London, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Embedded with symbols and life experiences, the work is often a suggestion of what could have been. His strong graphic characters and patterns are delicate, unorthodox, at times absurd and humorous. Kill Pixie presents a prophecy for an abstracted, urban version of folk art.

No, not now

Kill Pixie has just completed his first monograph, Kill Communication, published by IzRock Pressings. It includes 64 pages of fine art paintings and works on the street. His exhibition at Until Never is also the official Melbourne launch of this comprehensive publication.

Featuring the work of local and international artists Bootlegger is a fine art exhibition that explores the bandanna’s potential as an art object. It explores the bandanna as an element of outlaw style, and celebrates its aesthetic, its cultural roots, and its history. The selected artists were invited to express their ideas in the form of an original drawing, painting, or print, which will be exhibited in the gallery. Featured artists are practitioners drawn from the fields of street art and graffiti, fine art, illustration and design. THE TROUBLE WITH BOYS is an affectionate look at maleness. A video of the rough and tumble of Saturday night on the streets is juxtaposed with a peek at some of Australia’s best-known intellectuals sketched in pocket-sized pads. Massive graffiti heads on the walls and strange bronze figures compete with delicate black and white photos of men with artistic ambitions and the bug to create. In this show four artists face off with very divergent views of art and Australian masculinity.

James Drew’s short film takes us into the world of boys. Mucking around, out at night, full of beer, bravado and aggression. A male idea of fun. And if you live in Melbourne, you will have seen Michael Porter’s heads glaring down at you from a wall somewhere. But now they come in off the streets and onto the gallery walls, along with his smaller heads and figures, cast in bronze. This is an obsession that knows no bounds.

There are more heads from Chong and Konrad Winkler. Older heads this time. Chong’s small, intimate drawings of well-known writers and artists are outtakes from his life, & done out of habit rather than for any purpose. Portraits caught on the fly (on the sly) during a meeting or a conversation. They are the opposite of official images. Winkler’s photos are of artists who haven’t given up in spite of their years, still making art instead of a proper living. They have more persistence than worldly ambition, and an abiding faith in art that makes the often crappy life worthwhile, in the hope perhaps that they will leave something behind that is of lasting value.

Until Never is proud to present the first Australian exhibition by Pascale Mira Tschäni & Michael Husmann Tschäni of Zurich, Switzerland.
Since 2001 Pascale and Michael have developed a unique collaborative style encompassing the worlds of animation and comics, illustration, painting and installation. Pascales’s spontaneous and playful drawings spring from fantastic worlds and are complimented by the graphic, illustrative style of Michael’s work. Together they create imaginary playlands inhabited by wonderful creatures, magical flora and enchanted children.

Pascale and Michael’s long standing involvement with the Swiss comic and independent publishing scene has led to a number of limited-edition screen printed books such as Frau Kronenberg & ihre Katze, Meerestupfenpferde and a modern interpretation of the Indian folk legend Rama. They have exhibited prolifically throughout Switzerland and Germany, gained commissions for the Lucerne Childrens Hospital and the Hotel Landhaus in Berlin, and have most recently collaborated with Melbourne artists on the Foxtel - St Kilda Festival tram project, curated by Citylights. In March 2007 Pascale and Michael will also exhibit at Citylights in Centre Place.

“It was like two completely different, somewhat incompatible picture languages had collided when they started working together. But somehow they managed to create pictures, stories and installations together, without having to change their own individual styles or expressions in any way at all. Peter Daverington has been a significant player in the development of graffiti in Melbourne since the 1980s.In 1991 he teamed up with Merda to win the first national aerosol art competition (held in Melbourne), and throughout the 90’s Peter developed a distinctive aesthetic that is unique amongst local graffiti culture and the all pervasive NYC inspired Wildstyle. The stylised lettering of his early pieces feature miniature landscapes, architectural elements and his trademark checkerboard, all tropes that reappear in his most recent works.

Two years spent living in Egypt influenced Peter to make connections between Arabic calligraphy and graffiti lettering and further produced an appreciation of the Eastern origins of Western optics and the mystical dimensions of geometry and mathematics, via Sufi philosophy. Upon return to Australia, Peter commenced a Master of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts and Reflections on Hyperspace is the result of his research.

of early digital and late disco with the expansive complex spaces of a Romantic revival. In this, Daverington’s paintings owe as much as Frankie Goes to Hollywood to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1798 opium-fuelled vision of an exotic Eastern palace, the ”pleasure-dome,” around which caverns, rivers, walls and towers erupt from the earth and tumble together in fragments.’

Recent adventures in Outsider Painting
In an exercise in stylistic dissimulation, Richard Butler-Bowdon presents a seemingly literal series of portraits of local artists and landscapes which covertly allude to wider subtexts such as acts of seditious self-sacrifice, ethnic displacement and border control.

Richard Butler-Bowdon has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Gallery 4A, Experimental Art Foundation, First Floor, Gertrude Contemporary Art Space, Centre for Contemporary Photography, BUS, Citylights, Temple Bar-Dublin, ROOM Project-Rotterdam Netherlands and HOME-Prague Czech Republic.
