TONIGHT: Louis does Lennon

One of the lasting memories for me, of childhood, was the morning after John Lennon died. I grew up near Liverpool and I remember we had a special assembly at school. Mr Lazenbury (I wonder what he's doing now) the drama teacher told us that the pervious night, the 8th of December '80, Lennon was shot and killed in New York in the entrance hallway of the Dakota. He played 'Imagine' on a tiny little record player. I'll never forget it.

Tonight, at Tribute Island (the Lasting Tribute sim), the well-known avatar Louis Volare (real-life musician Louis Landon of www.louislandon.com) will be playing his live tribute to John Lennon and raising L$ for the American Cancer Societies 'Relay for Life'. This will be followed by a 2hr tribute to John by our good friend Gabi Riel of the online rado station Radio Riel. I'm quite a fan of Louis actually, I've been to a few of his gigs in the past, and I'm rather looking forward to this :-)

This is the first in the Tribute Island series of live gigs, in association with Prim Prefect Magazine & Radio Riel. Live musicians performing tributes to their heroes and to those who have inspired them ranging from Eva Cassidy and Syd Barrett to Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.

Woodland Tribute

This is the video from the weekend from our trip up to The Birches, nr. Ambergate, where a young lass called Nicola Parkin, fiancée of Leading Aircraftman Martin Beard, was dedicating an acre of woodland in his memory on the day they were due to be married.

To be honest I thought this would be really grim, but it wasn't, to be honest it was kinda cool. One of the sites I support is Lasting Tribute, who helped raise over £2,500 (through the website and through events and socials run by his unit, No 1 Squadron Royal Airforce) to pay for the woodland, memorial post, etc.

I hope this does the day justice.

So, 100 UK soldiers dead in Afghanistan as of Sunday.

This somewhat morbid milestone comes as a suicide bomber detonates a large device killing 3 young soldiers of The Parachute Regiment on a routine foot patrol near their base in Helmand province. This is the biggest single loss of life suffered by troops in the country since last August, when three men from 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment were killed when a US fighter dropped a 500lb bomb near their position. It's a crazy world.

I've reedited the video, adding quotes from the Afghanistan 100 on the Lasting Tribute website. Alas, probably due to the length and size of the file, YouTube compressed the arse out of it and it looked like a bag of spanners so I had to go back and spend an hour taking out the fades and dissolves and all the thinks that didn't make it look like a half-arsed PowerPoint presentation. Even now, the YT re compression in the embedded viewer is goobering up the text.

/sighs.

Incredible though. Amazing we somehow let this happen. All so young...

Are you taking the piss?

I can't lock my damn bike up cos some frelling environment raping petrol head has filled 2 cycle spaces with Ninja ZX-R 600 on one of the sunniest (and therefore cyclist filled) days of the year so far. Emails were send around, company wide, about this only yesterday. Why does it not surprise me these people can't read?

This pisses me off no end. Enough to stimulate me to blog about it for no good reason other than to vent my amateur journalistic spleen at the world. After all, isn't that what blogging is for?

Oh. I just been told that, cos I I've moaned at work, they've sprung to action. Proper signs asap and emails all round again. I feel oddly deflated, I was happy angry. It gave em something to think about other than dead pets...

This is just a quick note. I'll probably come back and update this with something more at a later date.

Worthington died last night, in our arms on the sofa being stroked and much loved. He was 9. Damn good going and a top rabbit. We put him to rest in the garden just now, wrapped in that skirt of SparklyJems that he liked to chew.

Pixie died on Saturday morning. She'd been ill for a while and we knew it was coming. She was 11. She meant the world to me. She was my best pal, as well as being an awesome cat. Everyone loved her who ever met her. We buried her under the cat mint, perfect.

Not a good week for pets.
