PhD studentship Bioengineering, medical engineering: A novel computational model to detect the effects of normal ageing on retinal vascular function

Description : Ageing is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The assessment of retinal microcirculation is proved to offer an important prognostic and diagnostic tool of the unpredicted, acute circulatory events in the elderly population. Normal data acquisition and interpretation is, however, necessary to differentiate changes due to normal ageing from the first signs of pathology. This is invaluable since early detection and intervention are essential principles in both disease management and maintaining patients’ quality of life (QOL). The aim of this work is to produce a new computational model that facilitates automatic analysis of the retinal vascular function measurements using the Dynamic Retinal Vessel Analyser (DVA, Imedos, GmbH, Germany), an instrument presently used for early detection of vascular dysfunction in diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Foundation Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies (ASEAN)

The ASEAN Foundation (AF) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) have reached an agreement to develop quality human resources in the member countries of ASEAN through the offering of the AF-AIT scholarships.

The ASEAN Foundation, an initiative of the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on December 15, 1997 to contribute to the prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries that now comprise Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and VietNam. He was charged with promoting a greater awareness of the ASEAN and greater interaction between people and their increased participation in the activities of ASEAN as well as to undertake development cooperation activities that promote the ‘Mutual, address equitable economic development and reduce poverty.

The scholarship programme is part of the ASEAN Foundation Scholarships for postgraduate studies and funded by the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund. The Asian Institute of Technology, on the other hand, is an institute post-1959, is a pioneer of the `Asia institution created to help meet the Irkutsk Region, growing needs for advanced training in engineering, science, technology and management, research and capacity building. AIT’s mission is to develop highly skilled and committed professionals who will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy.

AIT is based in Thailand and has affiliated centres in other parts of the world. Ten (10) graduate scholarships are available for ASEAN nationals who wish to pursue a master’s degree in AIT. The scholarship covers tuition and other academic expenses, and living allowances for a program of 2 years.

Four (4) grants will be awarded slots under the project “Capacity Building for Women, Poverty and the analysis of mobility development of road transport in the Greater Mekong.”
The six (6) scholarships will be awarded for the different fields of study identified by the ASEAN Foundation as described below.

Eligibility

To be eligible, candidates must:

1. Be a true national ASEAN
2. Keep businesses (normally from a four-year program) or its equivalent in an appropriate field
3. Have above average undergraduate classes (minimum 2.75 CGPA)

The Science and Technology Studies Doctoral Programme at Edinburgh is a designated ESRC outlet for 1+3 and +3 PhD studentships, available for UK or EU students. UK student awards cover fees and maintenance; EU students normally receive fees only; part-time students receive the fees plus pro rata maintenance. 1+3 awards combine 1 year of MSc research training with 3 years’ PhD funding. +3 awards are for applicants who have already completed a year of ESRC-recognised research training. ESRC national competition awards, Genomics Network awards, and various other funding opportunities are also available for the Programme.

What is Special Scholarship Program (SSP)?
Special Scholarship Program (SSP) was established in 2003 in order to support the advanced research of the university by enlisting the help of highly capable international students. Every year in April and October, the university enrolls selected foreign doctoral students under specific research projects. The students pursue the doctoral course in English while at the same time assisting their host professor as a research assistant (RA). Through this program KUT wishes to expand and deepen international ties with academic and educational institutions all over the world.

6. BENEFITS
(1) Receive up to 1,200, 000 yen per year for working as a research assistant.
(2) Exemption from 300,000 yen enrollment fee, 940,000 yen (per year) tuition fee, 150,000 yen (per year) fee for facilities improvement and 150,000yen (per year) cost of experiments and laboratory work.

Applications are invited for a Scholarship in the Faculty of Arts, University of Plymouth for postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD) specialising in Art History and commencing on 1 October 2008. We welcome proposals whose research topics engage with aspects of the history of art and visual culture from the eighteenth century to the present, including museological research, the Western appropriation of World Cultures and art theory. Postgraduate Research in the Faculty of Arts:

The Faculty of Arts comprises three Schools: Humanities; Architecture & Design; Art & Media.

Art History is part of the School of Humanities. The Art History MPhil/PhD community is the biggest in the Faculty and currently numbers 16 research students.

All postgraduate students are provided with a Director of Studies and at least one other supervisor, with whom they will work closely in developing their chosen projects. All supervisory team members are active researchers in their field and are well-placed to provide relevant and strong support.

Students are registered for an MPhil in the first instance and, subject to appropriate progress, may transfer to PhD status after one year (full time) or two years (part time).

All our students benefit from a programme of research skills training (provided by both the Faculty and the University’s Graduate Skills Development Programme), professional development workshops, symposia, guest lectures, and staff/student seminars. All new MPhil students are required to complete a credit-rated module in Interdisciplinary Research Skills in the Arts & Humanities in order to transfer to PhD status.

All students (whether part-time or full time) are expected to be available during term-time to spend at least 6 weeks (that is, 216 hours) per academic year, at the University or other negotiated locations for the purposes of research training, skills development, or working on research projects. This is in order to engage with activities such as attending tutorials, meetings, seminars, workshops, training events, symposia, lectures; delivering presentations; doing research in libraries or archives or creative work in studios, etc. (to be negotiated between the student and supervisors).

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the conditions of entry to university postgraduate studies at the University and School of the built environment. All candidates must have been offered a place on one of the programs listed above degree.

All scholarships are available for one year full-time or two-year part-time (or open / distance learning programs), as appropriate, leading to a Master’s degree in School ‘ built environment at Oxford Brookes University. All scholarship applicants must begin their studies in the academic year 2008-09.

The scholarships are open to all candidates from Britain, the EU and abroad, as appropriate.

All grants are awarded on a competitive basis, and thus applicants must have or expect to obtain a good degree (First Class 2.1 or equivalent) from a recognized institution of higher learning, or have experience that demonstrates knowledge and skills appropriate to honor University level.

From scholarship applicants who are the final year students should expect to be informed of the outcome of their degree before July 31, 2008 to be considered for a scholarship. International students must meet the requirements of the English language for their program.

Candidates qualifying for a scholarship partial allocation of funds from other sources may be awarded a “top-up” award. However, you will receive one or more quotes from other funding sources that contribute to their full control tuition will not be eligible for these awards. Eligibility will not be affected by funds for maintenance or for tuition beyond the level of grants.

Candidates who receive scholarships provide financial compensation from other sources of funding that cover all their tuition will not be eligible for these awards. Eligibility will not be affected if a candidate receives funding to the cost of living, travel, books, or other items or materials for school fees beyond the amount of the actual school scholarship.

Scholarships full-time: The school must receive scholarship applications completed on May 2, 2008. Successful applicants will be informed of the decision by the Committee no later than June 16, 2008. Applicants who are offered a scholarship must show by June 30, 2008 if they want to accept the offer of a scholarship. Pplicants failing to notify the school of their intention to take up the offer of a scholarship by the deadline of June 30 lose their scholarship, and it will be re-allocated to the next applicant on the reserve list scholarship.

Scholarships part time: The school must receive applications for scholarships ended June 13, 2008. Successful applicants will be informed of the decision by the Committee no later than July 18, 2008. 1. Financial Assistance
The Department of Financial Economics has available a number of PhD stipends starting in September 2008. The stipends are for a four year period and offer NOK315,000 per annum (approx. US$55,000) and also cover tuition fees. Each stipend contains a 35 hour per year teaching duty which usually consists of teaching assistant work. Academically excellent students should have a MSc in Finance or closely related subject.

2. Program Structure
The PhD in Finance is taught entirely in English and is structured such that the first year of study covers course work and exams (60 ECTS credits). The Department of Financial Economics plans to offer the following courses in the 2008/2009 academic year: Asset Pricing Theory, Empirical Asset Pricing, Corporate Finance Theory, Market Microstructure, and Advanced Topics in Finance. In addition, we are a member of the Nordic Finance Network (NFN) (http://project.hkkk.fi/nfn/courses.htm) which coordinates schools in the Nordic area offering PhD courses in finance. Through the network it is possible to visit other schools for a short period in order to undertake courses. We also actively encourage students to take longer periods of study at top class institutions around the world.

3. About the Department of Financial Economics
The Department of Financial Economics is committed to excellence in research. Currently we have thirteen faculty members in research positions. Faculty members have published in, amongst others, the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Business, and the Journal of Political Economy. Based in publications the department ranks as one of the top finance departments in Europe.

The University of Trento is now inviting applications from qualified candidates for its three-year PhD Programme in International Studies. This highly structured multidisciplinary programme is composed of a minimum of 200 hours of coursework. Students follow a common curriculum in International studies, methodology, research design, and history, and attend advanced seminars in their major and minor subjects, chosen from amongst the disciplines of Economics, Law, and Politics & Society. The coursework is concentrated in the first year, with the third semester being devoted to the completion of the research proposal. At least one semester must be spent abroad for research. The school invites applications across the whole range of disciplines comprising international studies, but particularly encourages students who intend to carry out research in the following areas: European and International Politics; European, Comparative and International Law; Open Economy Macroeconomics, International Trade and International Financial History. One scholarship will be reserved for applicants with a research project in the area of Trans-national Crime. An additional scholarship is reserved for candidates with a research project in the area of Politics of European and Regional Integration.

The programme is conducted entirely in English and will be taught by members of the university’s multi-national faculty. No tuition fees apply. The programme offers number of full scholarships renewable for three years subject to satisfactory academic appraisal. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and will be augmented by 50% for authorised research periods spent abroad. At least 50% of the admitted candidates will be offered scholarships.

Research Grant To pursue PhD studies in the CLIP group (http://clip.dia.fi.upm.es), Technical University of Madrid (Spain), in the context of the S-Cube EU Network of Excellence

The CLIP group at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) invites applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD scholarship for qualified
graduate students.

Candidates should have graduated (with a Bachelor level or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields prior to the start of their research work at UPM. Candidates close to fulfilling this requirement can also apply, and every case will be considered separately. Please include as much relevant information as possible.

The PhD work will focus on the research areas of the Clip group and the EU-funded S-Cube network, and will be directed by Manuel Carro and Manuel Hermenegildo. The general research objective of “S-Cube: Software and Services Systems Network” is to advance in the consolidation of a unified framework for Software and Services by studying how to reliably integrate the different requirements for a service-based application (SBA), including establishing ground work to define how tools to ensure SBAs can be safely implemented. Among other topics, this includes ensuring quality of service, and performing validation and verification of SBA or parts thereof –tasks in which UPM is directly involved.

This is also an outstanding opportunity to get involved in tasks which require international collaboration, as the 15 S-Cube partners come from 11 different countries. Besides purely research issues, a significant part of S-Cube deals with integrating existing European research in the field by, e.g., organizing workshops, striving to establish a researcher exchange network, and others. The CLIP group itself has currently around 20 full-time members from 6 different countries. The working language of the group (and of the project) is English, and good to excellent command of English is expected from applicants.

Experience in / knowledge of (or, at least, interest in) the following topics, despite not being mandatory, increases the chances of success:

* Software verification.
* Software validation.
* (Constraint) Logic Programming.
* Technology for and deployment of Web Services.
* Quality of service in software services.
* Service-oriented architectures.

The project starts on March 1, 2008, and will initially run for four years. The grant will be given in the form of a full-time contract which includes academic fees, medical care, and a tax-free monthly payment which can range from 1,100 to 1,600 euros, depending on experience. The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for funding from intending postgraduate researchers under the Embark Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (2008).

This first call in the 2008 programme will fund up to 165 Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering and technology.

The scheme is open to candidates worldwide with a number of scholarships also being available to exceptional candidates from non EU member states.

SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship [Philippines]

Launched in November 2005, the SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship provides financial support to a limited number of qualified PhD students whose researches are relevant to the priority thrusts of SEARCA. Scholars are required to spend two months at SEARCA, located in the Philippines, and present a seminar related to the research. Scholarship support is up to a maximum of US$8,400 per awardee. Deadlines for application are 1 April 2008 and 1 September 2008.

This scholarship program aims to:

Provide PhD students the opportunity to use the resources and facilities available at SEARCA and its network of universities for their research;
Produce quality research papers for publication; and
Enable them to work with SEARCA’s R&D personnel on mutually identified areas of concerns/interests in agriculture and rural development.
Eligibility for the Grant

Any graduate student who is a citizen of any SEAMEO member country and pursuing a PhD in agriculture or related sciences from any university in the world is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The applicant must have already completed his/her course work with an approved dissertation proposal and is ready to conduct the dissertation research. The applicant’s research must focus on any of SEARCA’s priority thrusts under the broad themes of natural resource management and promotion of agricultural competitiveness.

Computational modeling of auxin dynamics during lateral root initiation

The department plant systems biology of the VIB has an opening for an ambitious and energetic research assistant in the new research group Plant Systems Modeling, that focuses on computational modeling of plant development biology. Systems biology is a relatively new approach in biology, that shifts focus from individual molecules, genes and cells to their dynamic interplay: how do molecules, genes and cells form a working mechanism, behaving in a predictable way? A crucial pilar in this approach at the interface of biology, physics and computer science, is computational modeling. Modeling the biological system in a computer simulation gives us insights into developmental mechanisms, and helps us identify the gaps in our understanding of the biological system. These insights suggest new experiments, which our experimental collaborators test in the wet-lab.

What will be your task?

You will be building and analyzing dynamical models of lateral root initiation, in close collaboration with molecular biologists in the research group Root Development headed by Dr. Tom Beeckman. Lateral roots originate from cells in the root basal meristem, a proliferating tissue region just above the root tip, forming a regular branching pattern with evenly spaced lateral roots. The crucial signal for initiating the lateral root is most likely the phytohormone auxin. Auxin levels oscillate at a period of around 15 hours, precisely coinciding with the rhythm by which new lateral roots appear. Our modeling project aims at unraveling the mechanisms behind these oscillating auxin flows, which may be driven by a dynamics interaction between auxin and the production and cellular localization of its transporter proteins, including PIN, AUX and LAX. In the second part of your project you will also include root growth and the tightly orchestrated cell divisions following lateral root initiation.

Your background

For this challenging project that should lead to a Ph.D dissertation we are looking for a motivated MSc in Biology or Biotechnology with interest and affinity for mathematics and computer science, or an MSc in physics, applied mathematics or computer science with interest and affinity for biology. Programming experience (C++ or similar) and experience in biological modeling are a big plus.

The University of Trento (Italy), the RWTH Aachen University (Germany), and the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) offer a two year Joint Master’s Programme, named European Master in Informatics (EuMI, www.eumi-school.org). The objective of the Master’s Programme is to educate professionals who will understand advanced techniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Computer Science, and who will be able to put this knowledge to practice in the key application domains of Net-Centric/Media Informatics, Life Science Informatics, and Embedded Systems Informatics.

For each area of specialization, a joint curriculum is defined which involves two universities of the Consortium. The student admitted to a selected curriculum will study in two universities, taking courses with a focus on the selected area of specialization. The student will spend half of his/her Master’s course in one university and the other half in the other university.

Funding
20 scholarships will be offered for students who are residents of countries outside the European Union, the European Economic Area / European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the European Union (Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, and Turkey). The amount of the scholarship is € 21.000 per year.

The international study opportunities include the VLIR funded International Courses (ICPs) and the International Training Programmes (ITPs).

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 ICPs or one of the 6 ITPs.

Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.

Although these programmes primarily address students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

For more information, please refer to the more comprehensive VLIR publication ‘International Study Opportunities in Flanders, Belgium’, available at the Belgian Embassies, at selected universities in Africa, Asia and Latin America and downloadable from the VLIR website. It contains details on course contents and application requirements, and explains the VLIR scholarship programme and the application procedure.

The application form can be found in the publication ‘International Study Opportunities in Flanders, Belgium’. It can also be obtained directly from the respective university or downloaded from the VLIR website.

The application form should be returned to VLIR no later than 1 February 2008.

Australia Engineering (ICT) International Undergraduate Scholarship for 2008

Engineering (ICT) International Undergraduate Scholarship for 2008 offers students the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate qualification at UTS:Engineering. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the student’s year 12 (or equivalent) results. The scholarship is also open to diploma holders.

Engineering (ICT) International Undergraduate Scholarship for 2008 covers 50% of the tuition fees commencing from the first semester of study for a period of four years. One student will be selected per semester and the commencement of the scholarship will be the same as the commencement of the student’s Bachelor of Engineering.

Eligibility to apply:

A student who expects to complete the equivalent year 12 exam in 2007 overseas
A student who will meet the normal entry requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering -
A student who obtains an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 6.0 in writing - www.ielts.org
Engineering (ICT) International Undergraduate Scholarship for 2008 will be awarded twice a year for an intake for Autumn and Spring Semesters.

The application form must be submitted together with the International Coursework Application form to either a UTS representative or UTS: International.

The closing dates for this scholarship for are:

Autumn Semester (February start): 15 December 2007; Spring Semester (July start) 1 June 2008.

Beasiswa S2 terbaru Prasetiya Mulya Future Leaders Scholarship 27, november, 2007 ; Deadline application: 10 Desember 2007, 04.00 pm.

Prasetiya Mulya Business School was established in September 1982 with the aim to serve as an excellent center of learning for its partners: business entrepreneurs, professionals, and researchers. Prasetiya Mulya Business School awards up to two scholarships for full-time Magister Manajemen (MM) students each year.

The scholarship awards are open to highly talented and potential leaders with excellent academic qualities but financially disadvantaged. Preference is given to candidates who possess the necessary aptitude, personal qualities and interest in management.

Two scholarships are available each year covering tuition fees, books and living allowance for a maximum tenure of 20 months.

Eligibility Criteria
• Indonesian citizen who can demonstrate leadership potential and interest in and
commitment to community and national development.
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from any legally accredited Indonesian or
overseas university. A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 (on a 4.00 scale) is
required.
• Applicant must be under 30 years of age when lodging the application.
• Preferably having a minimum of two-years full time professional work experience after
completion of the undergraduate degree when lodging the application
• Preferably having International or Institutional TOEFL minimum score of 550 (paper
based) or 213 (computer based)
• Not currently enrolled in a graduate or post-graduate program or school nor already
owning Master’s degree or equivalent
• Not in receipt of other equivalent award or scholarship offering similar or other benefits at the time of the award
• Pass Prasetiya Mulya admission screening process.

Candidates should complete the application form and return them along with copies of required documents to Prasetiya Mulya before the deadline: 10 Desember 2007, 04.00 pm.
