This is a preview of what we came up with at #gnome-art, we would like to make a Plus! pack like the one included on old windows 95.
More info at <span style="font-weight:bold;"><a href="http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt_2fPlusPack">gnome wiki</a></span>
<span style="font-weight:bold;">update</span>: Icons are png's which I'm planning to substitute with vector versions. Just let me some time to teach myself Inkscape pretty well.
<span style="font-weight:bold;">Update:</span> icons are now svg.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7876592-113397395887572871?l=radel.blogspot.com'/></div>radelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08199421424462088131noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7876592.post-1133914564429144872005-12-07T01:13:00.000+01:002006-10-29T02:44:00.824+01:00Screenshot #11!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/851/507/1600/Screenshot.png"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/851/507/320/Screenshot.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>

Some weeks ago i've read somewhere (maybe on <a href="http://planet.gnome.org">planetgnome</a>) that someone was writing something to notify the content of /etc/motd.
Now, i think /etc/motd is very useful when you're on a machine and you're not the sysadmin, you can easily and quickly read what the administrator wants to notify to his users, GUI lacks of something like this, and i think one of the best user-friendly feature is GDM (newbies don't want to write startx!!).
Said that i do love /etc/motd, i should say that I DO HATE "casual" notification bubbles (the upgrade notification in ubuntu makes me so nervous.. yeah, I know by myself I have to do a dist upgrade!!), so i thought it would be useful to have such infos directly in the splash screen that, is something useless let by itself.
I also think it wouldn't be hard to implement, basically it's an imagemagick trick. All you need is a template image and imagemagick can write the content of /etc/motd and the output of mail command in the template image. It's a simple bash script.. (I'll post the script later, my bash scripting is a bit rusted at the moment.
Of course, the script could be disabled if somebody wants a traditional splash screen.
comments are welcome.
cheers, night and thank you for all the fish.
<span style="font-weight:bold;">Update:</span> rumors say that splash screen will be removed in gnome 2.14. I'm really excited about the first one, so I'm planning to code something similar, even though there are some issues taken from Windows Vista that i don't like and probably I will not code.
idea: we could do two different default themes for gnome, usability default end eye candy default.
the first is the classic clearlooks theme (or the future tango one) with tango icons, the second one could be something like the first mockup

<br>Public Defender Clay Carter arrives in court just in time to receive another hopeless murder case. His bad luck and dead-end career disappear as he stumbles upon evidence that thrusts him into the opulent world of class-action lawsuits. Clay's initial success earns him the title "King of Torts." Quickly, the glamour fades for both the character and the listener. Despite reader Dennis Boutsikaris's strong and clear narration, the novel drags along to an unsatisfactory conclusion. Boutsikaris applies a fitting characterization to European model Ridley, Clay's new trophy girlfriend, who symbolizes all the pitfalls facing the nouveau riche. Regrettably, his fine reading cannot transform a dull, predictable story into an intriguing, suspenseful tale.<br><br>

his addictive tale of a young lawyer defending a black Vietnam war hero who kills the white druggies who raped his child in tiny Clanton, Mississippi, is John Grisham's first novel, and his favorite of his first six. He polished it for three years and every detail shines like pebbles at the bottom of a swift, sunlit stream. Grisham is a born legal storyteller and his dialogue is pitch perfect.
The plot turns with jeweled precision. Carl Lee Hailey gets an M-16 from the Chicago hoodlum he'd saved at Da Nang, wastes the rapists on the courthouse steps, then turns to attorney Jake Brigance, who needs a conspicuous win to boost his career. Folks want to give Carl Lee a second medal, but how can they ignore premeditated execution? The town is split, revealing its social structure. Blacks note that a white man shooting a black rapist would be acquitted; the KKK starts a new Clanton chapter; the NAACP, the ambitious local reverend, a snobby, Harvard-infested big local firm, and others try to outmaneuver Jake and his brilliant, disbarred drunk of an ex-law partner. Jake hits the books and the bottle himself. Crosses burn, people die, crowds chant "Free Carl Lee!" and "Fry Carl Lee!" in the antiphony of America's classical tragedy. Because he's lived in Oxford, Mississippi, Grisham gets compared to Faulkner, but he's really got the lean style and fierce folk moralism of John Steinbeck.

1 - When I first approach internet and precisely the Web, in 1995, there were only english webs ites, so english became, in my mind, the only possible language in Internet. (if you don't speak esperanto.. ;-P)
2 - Strangely, I started to lead two separately lives, one led in Trichiana, Belluno, Italy, the other one led in Internet, in the beginning they were close to each other but in the last years they totally disassociated.
The first life is led with my friends, my family, sometimes with my girlfriends. They all love me because who I am, they don't care about anything else, they just love me.
Internet doesn't care about who I am, what car I drive, how much money I have in my bank account or how many girlfriends I've ever got. In internet all these stuff are useless, the only thing internet cares about is knowledge. In Internet you are someone by what you know, not who you are.
In Internet who knows rules, who wants to rule learn.. the others just watch. These rules are brutal but right. Latins called this "dura lex sed lex".
I am learning.
So, in Internet I speak Internet language, although not very well (as one thousand gramar errors in less than ten lines can attest).
3) My little involvement in <a href="http://www.gnome.org">gnome</a> community invites me to allow people to understand what I am talking about, the only way to make it possible is to write in english.
4) I don't usually post personal and private thoughts on this blog, but when I do, I don't want some people to understand what I wrote cos the posts in question are only outpours and nothing else. The people I am talking about don't understand english language (or not so well) so I'm out of danger.
5) The world's most spoken languages are english, spanish, chinese and french. I don't spoke a single word of spanish or chinese and my french is very poor so the only way to reach as many people as I can i to write in english.
6) It's my blog and I am free to post on it in bulgarian if I want so shut up!
I use this post to answer another faq:

Cos they'll put words into our mouths they're making us feel so ashamed
Making us take the blame
Making us cold in the night
Making us question my heart and soul
And I think that it's not quite right
Hey! stay young and invincible
Cos we know just what we are
And come what may we're unstoppable
Cos we know just what we are
Feed your head with all the things you need
When you're hungry
Stay in bed and sleep all day as long as it's Sunday
Cos they'll put words into your mouth they're making you feel so ashamed

They had not done much publicity before as they wanted to get some code working first. <a href="http://people.imendio.com/andersca/">Anders Carlson</a> is behind this effort. Hopefully we will see the community pick up and a nice theme to integrate the apps with the native look of the Mac happen.
<p>Also see the <a href="http://gimpfoo.de/2005/10/06/an-early-glance-at-gimp-on-os-x/">GIMP running on OSX</a> without X11.
<p>These are fantastic news for Gtk# users.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7876592-112863723379376402?l=radel.blogspot.com'/></div>radelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08199421424462088131noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7876592.post-1128591898611278782005-10-06T11:44:00.000+02:002006-10-29T02:43:59.631+01:00Beagle..<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/radel/49803506/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/27/49803506_6f5c52a51c_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Screenshot" /></a>
Last night I tried out beagle, the bleeding edge desktop search for gnome, on my ubuntu breezy .. very very impressive.. it's much faster than month ago and i can't wait for the new layout made by garret..
Beagle: a good answer to Spotlight by open source community.
