Major Lazer - Guns dont kill people...lazers do!

Guns Don’t Kill People...Lazers Do! nearly exhausts with a similarly-paced schizophrenia. One minute, the minds (Diplo, Switch and others, including Santigold and Skerrit) are in the same room, gnashing their collective teeth through gravity-defying grooves comprised of flying garbage, gunplay, barnyards and bulletholes. The next minute, however, the beats weaken, the plot leaks, and the listener is locked in a high school bathroom with the burnouts, smokin’ weed and making juvenile sex jokes. Or, hey, maybe they’re not so juvenile – when’s the last time you heard a teenager drop a line like “open your legs like a gift shop”? (Thank god the Andy Milonakis-via-Autotuner jam about zombie vaginas didn’t make the actual album.)

Diplo and crew’s fascination with Autotuner surfaces several times anyway. The club track “Keep It Goin’ Louder” isn’t too dissimilar from Chris Brown’s chewing gum commercial, lending just a little credence to a recent blogger/hater’s comment that parts of this album are a cynical ploy to cash in on licensing. The bizarre skit “Baby” features mythical hero Major Lazer -- rumored to be a Jamaican/cyborg/zombie killer on a jet-powered skateboard -- talking to a crying baby. The wails are transformed via Autotune into a loop for the following dancehall track.

When this session is focused on music, it’s nearly a force of nature, and it’s almost entirely about beats, and it’s a far more varied palate than one might expect. Even without considering his steady stream of Tweets in patois, Diplo would seem to have Pan-Carribbean -- not just Jamaican -- roots of some kind. When he’s not killing it with hard dancehall, or the occasional throwaway house rhythm (as in the aforementioned substitute gum commercial), he actually sneaks in the oddly syncopated truckalong snare of soca and calypso, like on “Jump Up” and “Pon De Floor,” the latter being one of the more compelling songs on the album. Its myriad sound effects, hypnotic synth riff, and extraordinarily catchy marching snare is the kind of cleverness that would invite accusations of novelty if it weren’t so pervasive – somehow, Diplo and Co. have the depth to back it up. The bass line of “Lazer Theme” is from the intro to Black Flag’s “Six Pack,” as is the closing crescendo of cymbals and feedback. It’s a weird shoutout to aging hipster types that are probably 10 to 15 years old than Diplo himself. In an almost historical counterpoint, “Can’t Stop” showcases Major Lazer’s more musical side with a vocal duet and rhythm section sweetly reminiscent of the Studio One sound.

In front of all of this sometimes exhilarating experimentation is the single “I’ll Make Ya,” during which Diplo and the entire Major Lazer collective throw the entire trickbag at a single track: Santogold rapping doubletime; a beat composed of horses, cellphones, and typewriters; deftly sampled snippet of Dick Dale’s “Misirlou.” Despite the occasional filler and silliness, Guns Don’t Kill People...Lazers Do! takes dancehall, club music and a genre that can probably best be described as “Diplo” to new and very interesting places. One can only hope he’s saving some of this clever for the next bumper crop of club rebels.

Following the popularity of "rockstar" type remixes on the Philly and Baltimore club scenes, HTX # 8 presents five tracks from Sega, a 20 year old walking encyclopedia of club music, who holds down the biggest all-ages rollerink parties in Philadelphia, playing strictly his own productions and remixes. Here is again some bmore bootlegs from Diplo's bag....
Diplo is again at the helm and gives us choppy versions of Kim Carnes' 80s pop classic 'Bette Davies Eyes' which is possibly the 12"s high point. In fact all I want to do right now is rush home and play this loud again and again, it just takes me back...Flip over the twelve and you're greeted with a dope mix of hip dance poppers Justice's aptly titled D.A.N.C.E, a slightly dubious chop-up of Michael Jackson's 'Smooth Criminal' (was it needed.? I think maybe not) and then ends with a jolly trashing of Dee Lite's 'Groove is in the Heart' lovingly retitled 'Groove is in the D*ck'. Bangin'.

Diplo's pulled in more than just mongrel Mad Decent this time,
with remixes from The Bangers (of "The Bangathon" fame) and

Scotty B of Unruly Records. Diplo's remix of Busta's "Touch It"

is still the shining moment here, flipping a ten gallon hat of
precision B-More drums underneath the acapella (whistles round
the neck and everything- I see you Wes!). Instrumental for that
one included. If you can manage more M.I.A. remixes, the Scotty
B mix of "Bucky Done Gun" is that classic Baltimore WMD sound.
Then the Bangers turn in a blend of Janet's "Control" with DP's
"Hell Yeah," workhorse material. Mad Decent closes it out with
a remix of "Hung Up"- watch for the second half where it flips
from Madonna to Macka Diamond and somebody else killing it
dancehall style. Nooks, crannies, there's more.

After his successful first release on Wavetec, entitled ‘Deep Joy EP’, Barcelona-based producer Tony Lionni (also on Versatile, Mulemusiq) returns with a much-anticipated new EP, ‘Mamadu’. This album brilliantly demonstrates Lionni’s musical production talent ranging from techno, dub, to progressive, acid and deep tech-house. The title ‘Mamadu’ is a sure reference to the warm, melodic techno inspired by afro rhythms that are layered over the abstract electronic tunes and minimalistic soundscapes on this EP. The title track evolves into a fast-paced atmospheric techno journey, while ‘Deep Odyssey’ merges haunting deep-house rhythms with a dubbier flavor more in the vein of the Deep Space-sound developed by François K.

Tom Trago-Voyage Direct Remixes

In a recent interview with Bodytonic, Tom Trago told the site about his disco and Detroit influences for his recent album: Voyage Direct. In this remix pack, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Yuro and Actress take those influences even further.

"Passion" gets smothered by Motor City Drum Ensemble. 909 hats and claps litter the highs, while a steady 119bpm kick roots this track firmly in the deep category. Strings and classic disco vocals bring it all together, making this one a sure-fire hit for the deep house crowd.

On the flip side, "Brothers of String" gets a reworking from Yuro and Trago himself, a tandem that has often worked together in the past. The duo slow the pace of the original and add melodies, transforming it into a slow burning house workout. While good, it's the weakest of the three here because Actress delivers techno in a Millsian style. Fast, gritty drums pound along while synth lines are looped into oblivion. Lighter elements such as piano riffs are introduced sparingly; a stark contrast to the harsh soundscape. If Trago's Detroit namedrops are anything to go by, he must've loved to hear what Actress had done for "Lost in the Streets of NYC." by resident advisor

Hudson Mohawke is a man on everyone's lips right now, a producer whose reputation is soaring even though he's barely released any material, and a huge influence and production partner for Rustie, who's also seemingly drooled over by anyone and everyone with an interest in hip hop, dubstep, dub techno and all forms of deviant musics since the release of his seminal "Jagz The Smack" EP and remix for the Hyperdub imprint in recent months. Hudson has already been snapped up as the latest signing for the Warp label, and 2008 promises to be an incredible year for the kind of slowed down, squashed and loose Hip Hop variations he, Rustie and the likes of Flying Lotus have helped shape. This incredible twelve is his first release proper and is already one of those releases that absolutely everyone seems to be asking us about. We're extremely happy to say we FINALLY have it in stock and we don't expect copies to touch the sides as far as demand goes. This cheeky EP features Hud Mo on the re-jig tip, taking some well known R&B tracks (including what must be one of the finest tracks about masturbation ever recorded - Tweet's immense "Oops"), slowing them down, deconstructing and rebuilding them with a deep, bass-heavy edge and a loose, almost frayed percussive swing - the result being a series of unbelievably heavy, funked up and utterly filthy reinterpretations that will no doubt wreak havoc in clubs across the land long after this measly pressing has disappeared into the ebay ether. Psych Funk 101 - A Global Psychedelic Funk Curriculum

Psych-Funk 101 (1968-1975) is the debut release from World Psychedelic Funk Classics and presents itself as 'a global psychedelic funk curriculum', complete with a 'course description' and 'supplemental listening' in its copious notes (found either on the handsome gatefold sleeve of the vinyl or the 36-page booklet of the CD). The title may be a little misleading since some tracks contain funk and some contain psych with a geniune melding of the two not always apparent, but nonetheless this is chock full of amazing and eye-opening stuff. The only names I was previously familiar with were Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (who doesn't quite reach his usual heights here) and French Zeuhl dudes Eskaton (who do) but I'll certainly be investigating the others further, particularly Turkey's Husnu Ozkartal Oskestrasi and Italy's Armando Sciassia whose bassy grooves pretty much blew me away. Hopefully there are many more of these to come..
