Turkey’s world-class archers aim at medals in Summer Olympic Games

Archery is one of the oldest sports in the world. You can see mythological figures such as Apollo or Eros carrying bows and arrows. If we must stay within the borders of Turkish history, we can see that the sport was practiced in early Turkish states, but the greatest importance was attached to it during Ottoman times.

Fatih Sultan Mehmet, the conqueror of İstanbul, concentrated archery activities and the production of bows and arrows in İstanbul's Okmeydanı (Square of Arrows) district. Subsequent sultans expanded the district by adding additional facilities. Later, a bazaar was opened behind Beyazıt Mosque in İstanbul where all the manufacturers of archery equipment gathered. Although the sport went into decline during the later periods of the Ottoman Empire and during the early years of the Turkish Republic, numerous attempts have been made to revive the tradition of Turkish archery.
Turkey became the 16th member of the International Archery Federation (FITA) in 1955. After the establishment of a national archery federation in 1961, Turkish archers began to represent the country at an international level. There was an interruption in the development of the sport in 1982, when the federation was attached to the Turkish Shooting and Hunting Federation. The Turkish Archery Federation was re-established in 1982, and Uğur Erdener became the head of the federation. Erdener would later manage archery throughout the world when he was elected president of FITA in 2005.

After being honored by Erdener's election as the new president of FITA, Turkish archery has turned its focus to earning medals in the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London. “We, as the Turkish Archery Federation, aim to be more successful. We are distinguished among other archery federations in that our former president is now the president of FITA. We are very proud of this. Now, we want to win medals at the Olympic games. Our best Olympic score was fourth place in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. We were very close to winning a medal, but we did not,” Turkish Archery Federation President Abdullah Topaloğlu, who has a 32-year history in the sports world in Turkey and has served in numerous posts of various federations, told Sunday's Zaman.

‘Archery is an expensive sport'

Even though archery has a significant place in Turkish history, there are not many archers in the country today -- there are around 7,000 registered archers in the federation -- because the sport is expensive, said Topaloğlu, noting that they are working to develop archery in the country. “We have around 270 trainers who were brought up in the federation's courses. But we cannot use them efficiently. Only 70 or 80 of them are actively working,” he said. Apart from financial obstacles, Turkey also suffers from a lack of archery facilities. Because the sport has few practitioners, those who do practice archery do not have many facilities to choose from. “We have a facility in Antalya, and archers can practice there for the entire day. We plan to establish such facilities in Ankara and İzmir, too. We work in cooperation with the metropolitan municipalities of some provinces where there is the potential for practicing archery. Other federations cooperate with the Education Ministry, but we cannot spread the sport to all schools since TL 1,000 to 1,500 is needed for each student of archery. For such reasons, we approach the development and expansion of the sport regionally in Turkey,” Topaloğlu elaborated.

The federation's president further said the interest of Turkish people in archery is gradually rising due to the international archery competitions held in Turkey, especially after the TV broadcasts of the World Archery Cup, which took place earlier this month in the southern province of Antalya. “We received a lot of calls asking for information about the courses offered by the federation. We are trying to meet the demand. Also, around 350 children applied to the Juniors Cup -- which started yesterday and ends today. We are witnessing such a large number of applications for an archery competition for the first time. It is promising. They are the future archers,” Topaloğlu said.

Turkish archer survives after arrow enters his head

An interesting incident occurred in Turkey in 2004. Archery enthusiast Hakan Budak accidently shot his friend, Cem Balcı, in the head while they were practicing the sport as a hobby. Balcı underwent an operation and was unconscious for 11 days, but he survived. Stating that he was at fault for the accident, Balcı told the Anatolia news agency: “Such an accident has occurred three times in the world so far. If I had obeyed the rules, the arrow would not have struck my head.” He also stressed that the sport is safe and that no one should be afraid to practice it.

Topaloğlu agrees with Balcı about the safety of the sport. “Those who open an archery facility must have a trainer's certificate, and safety precautions must be taken in the field. Such an accident had never happened before in Turkey. It is not about the nature of the sport, which is normally harmless. The accident occurred solely due to a personal mistake,” he explained.

Compound Bows - 43 Years in the Making

A compound bow is a bow of the modern age that uses a levering system usually consisting of cables and pulleys to bend the limbs. The limbs of a compound bow are much stiffer than that of the recurve bow or long bow. This quality or state of stiffness makes the compound bow much more energy efficient than other conventional bows; such as design have limbs that are too stiff to be drawn, hence, has the strings attached to a pulley system or also known as cams, of which one or both have one or more cables attached to the other end. This levering system enables the archer to hold the bow fully drawn and take more time to aim.

The compound bow is much more superior compared to other bows because it isn’t affected by temperature and humidity changes and its more accurate, faster, and has longer range. The first compound bow was developed in 1966 by Holless Wilbur Allen in Missouri and given a US patent in 1969.

The compound bows’ riser is usually made of aluminum or magnesium of the aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum alloy. It is the central mount for other components such as the limbs, sight, stabilizers, and quivers. Limbs are made out of composite materials and are able to withstand high tensile and compressive forces. All the energy is stored on the limbs, and not on the cables and pulleys. The cam or wheel is usually at the end of each limb. Its shape varies between different bow designs, and fall under four most commonly used types: Single Cam, Hybrid Cam, DualCam, and Binary Cam. The less common designs are the Quad Cam and Hinged.

Compound bow strings and cables are made of high-modulus polyethylene that have great tensile strength, minimal stretchability to make the bow transfer its energy to the arrow in a more efficient and durable way. Earlier models used cables made out of plastic coated steel. The pulley system has some rubber-covered blocks that act as draw-stops that can be adjusted to suit the archer’s optimum draw-length. This provides a consistent anchor point and consistent amount of drawn force to make consistent and accurate shots.

Cams or pulleys have two designs that have direct control of the arrow’s acceleration. The “soft cam” will accelerate the arrow more gently compared to the “hard cam”. Soft cams are best suited for novice archers, whereas the advanced archers may use the hard cam type for speed. Bows can have the integration of both cams for more flexible shots. Other modifications in the compound bow are the use of mechanical release aids, magnifying sights, stabilizers, and dampers to allow the archer to shoot more accurately.

Waco To Host Archery In The Schools Tournament Feb. 27

AUSTIN, Texas - The 4th Annual Texas-National Archery in the Schools Program (TASP) Tournament will take place Feb. 27 at the Waco Convention Center. Rising attendance at this yearly culminating event for participating Texas schools charts the program’s increasing popularity.

The first TASP tournament in Texas took place in February 2006, with 126 students representing 13 schools. The third annual championship last March drew 476 students, and attendance at this year’s tournament is expected to approach 700 students, teachers and parents.

Changing lives one arrow at a time

Since the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) came to Texas in September of 2004, organizers have trained more than 900 archery instructors at all three levels—Instructor, Trainer, and Specialist—including more than 400 classroom educators at 200 plus schools across Texas.

Since the national program’s inception in Kentucky seven years ago, it is now established in 46 states and four other countries. On May 8-9, 2009 the 8th annual national tournament will be held in Louisville, Kentucky. The 2008 NASP national tournament was the largest archery event in the history of North America, with 2,865 participants.Last school-year across the nation, 866,000 school children in grades 4-12 received archery instruction from their teachers and an estimated 1 million will participate this year. This makes NASP the most successful youth archery program in history. The program expects to be operating in every U.S. state by the end of 2009.

NASP lessons are taught by physical education teachers with a focus on international-style target archery. The program teaches a lifetime skill in a controlled, safe environment. Universal fit NASP equipment is useable by all 4th – 12th grade children and teachers, and is durable, affordable and identical in appearance and function. In order to meet and enhance student learning and accountability standards, many schools integrate archery into core content areas such as math, science, and history.

NASP is intended for all students regardless of athletic ability or experience. Accommodations are routinely made for physically challenged students.

“Although we just began the NASP this year, it has had a tremendous impact on our school district,” said Brian Gray, school superintendent with Union Grove ISD based in Gladewater in northeast Texas. “The participation levels are through the roof and the program is allowing our staff to teach kids about how to be successful in life, while promoting a lifelong activity.”

Olympics Champions Tied the Knot

Korean archers PARK Sung-Hyun, 25-year old, and PARK Kyung-Mo, 33, united Olympic destiny. They were blessed in the presence of many guests on 6 December 2008.

PARK Sung-Hyun won two gold medals (individual and team) at the 2004 Athens Games. She repeated as an Olympic champion in the women's team final in Beijing last year, leading her country to a sixth straight Olympic title. She also won individual silver in Beijing.

PARK Kyung-Mo, who also won team gold in 2004, had similar success as her fiancée four years later. In Beijing, he helped the men's team clinch the Olympic title for the third straight time and won the individual silver medal.

The newly-weds started dating two years ago while preparing for the Olympics but kept their relationship secret to avoid affecting the national team. The two are the first gold medallists in the country's history to marry each other.

We wish PARK Sung-Hyun and PARK Kyung-Mo a wonderful and happy life together!

Coroner: Archery Death Accidental

The archery death of a Deer Park Middle School student was unintentional, the Stevens County coroner said Sunday.

Alex Niskanen died Thanksgiving afternoon, after being shot with a hunting arrow while visiting friends south of Chewelah.
The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office has not identified the boy who released the arrow. County Coroner Patti Hancock said he was older than the victim.

"The two boys were outside playing," Hancock said. "They didn’t’ have a lot of power on the bow, but with a broadhead arrow, it doesn’t take much."

The arrow hit no bone, but severed the axillary artery in the 12-year-old boy’s left shoulder. He bled to death, Hancock said.
It’s not clear whether the two had been hunting. Whitetail deer currently are legal game for archers in the Chewelah area.
A man who answered the phone at the Niskanen residence in Deer Park said the family did not want to comment about the death.

Arrowheads used for hunting typically are made three or four razor-sharp blades designed to cause bleeding. By contrast, the heads on target arrows are cone-shaped, like a pencil point.
Deer Park elementary, middle and high schools are among 30 schools statewide that participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program. And while the training is designed for the controlled setting of a target range, students hear "over and over again" that bows can be dangerous, said Dave Mack, state program coordinator.
At least 100 students from Deer Park Middle School participate, Mack said. It’s not clear whether Alex Niskanen was part of that program.

A Deer Park seventh-grader with the same last name, but a different first name, placed fourth in a state championship held in March in East Wenatchee. The relationship between the two Niskanen boys was not clear Sunday.

Surprise City Council backs off of city bow-and-arrow ban

The Surprise City Council on Thursday exempted bows and arrows from a list of weapons banned inside city limits.
The decision came after the council heard passionate pleas from archers, including an athlete who competed in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
On Sept. 11, the council voted unanimously on a first reading to add bows and arrows, crossbows and blowguns to the list.
Weaponson the list include firearms, BB and pellet guns, dart guns and slingshots.
But Thursday, the council agreed 6-0 to exclude bows and arrows. Mayor Lyn Truitt was absent.
City officials will work with archers to reach a compromise that won't prohibit archery but will still increase public safety.
Meanwhile, banning crossbows and blowguns requires one more reading, likely to take place at the council's first meeting in October meeting.
The Surprise Police Department sought the ban because of safety concerns.
Surprise Police Chief Daniel Hughes said he is open to discussion about the ban.
Hughes said the ban was never intended to hinder sportsmen, but rather inexperienced or irresponsible shooters that pose a threat to themselves or their neighbors.
"It's always been about public safety," Hughes said.
He said the city ordinance's language concerning the discharge of weapons is too vague. Officers responding to situations involving bows and arrows are sometimes unsure how to respond because they are not explicitly listed in a weapons ban, Hughes said.
The ban amendment appeared on its way to passage Thursday until several archers spoke out at the City Council meeting, expressing alternative views.
Surprise resident Eric Bennett, 34, is an avid archer and competed this month in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. Bennett said a ban would prohibit him from practicing for future tournaments, as well as his mission to teach youth.
"Archery is an Olympic sport that allows athletes, young and old, an opportunity to compete and be active," he said.
Kari Granville, a board member of the Arizona State Archery Association, told Council members they could write a policy to deter misuse but at the same time foster archery as a sport. Council appeared receptive to the idea.
Pat Crouch, a field supervisor with Arizona Game and Fish, also pleaded with Council to wait on a ban. Crouch was fearful a broad ban would impact his department's wildlife management, including hunters' abilities to use the rural areas of Surprise.
Before the meeting, Councilman John Longabaugh favored banning bows and arrows, but he changed his mind after hearing their remarks.
"The archery community made a very good case," he said.

İstanbul’s athletic heritage

Before Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's political and social reforms and the rise of amateur sports in Turkey, athletics in İstanbul went hand-in-hand with military training.
Archery, wrestling and equestrian games, not to mention gladiator contests, sharpened skills required for battle. Covering two millennia, İstanbul's sports history is closely linked not only with the arts of war but also with politics and the choices rulers make about urban design.
Before the official adoption of Christianity, gladiator contests attracted crowds of spectators both in Byzantium and throughout the Roman Empire. In A.D. 326, Constantine banned gladiator contests, which usually resulted in the death of one of the combatants, and chariot races became the most popular spectator sport for Constantinople's elite and masses alike. Other sports allowed by the church included boxing, wrestling and track and field (running, jumping and disc throwing). Equestrian sports like polo, imported from Persia, and European-style chivalric jousting were also popular in Byzantine times, as was hunting.
Situated between the Hagia Sophia and the palace, the Hippodrome was the place where the emperor and the masses converged for sporting events and other public ceremonies. It measured 117 x 440 meters and is thought to have held 100,000 people. Construction of the Hippodrome, modeled on the Circus Maximus in Rome, began in A.D. 196, during the reign of Septimus Severus, and was completed during the reign of Constantine I (324-337). In 1261, when the emperor moved to the Blachernae Palace (in present-day Ayvansaray), most sporting activities moved as well, leaving the Hippodrome with only jousting and horse racing.
In 1609 the remains of the Hippodrome were cleared to make room for the Sultanahmet Mosque and all that remains today are three monuments, including the Egyptian obelisk, which adorned the spina in the middle of the race course.
The Ottomans referred to the Hippodrome as "The Horse Field" (At Meydanı) and used it for horse races and jereed (cirit) contests. Jereed is an ancient Turkic sport with origins in Central Asia. Individuals from opposing teams pursue one another in turns, the pursuer throwing a blunt javelin at his opponent. The fact that the game occasionally resulted in death may have influenced Mahmut II's decision to ban the game in 1826, but it continued to be popular in the provinces.
The main sporting facility in Ottoman İstanbul was Okmeydanı, which covered nearly 300 acres on the far side of the Golden Horn. Fatih Sultan Mehmet (1451-1481) designated this land as the city's "archery field" soon after the conquest. Beyazıt II (1481-1512) established a training facility there, Okçular Tekkesi (the archers' "lodge"), where talented archers and their coaches were fed and trained. Coaches and the captain (şeyh) of the archers lived at the lodge. To become a licensed member of this elite society, a bowman had to shoot an arrow at least 594 meters. Wrestling, running and equestrian games like jereed and polo also took place at Okmeydanı.
For 500 years, until the founding of the republic, Okmeydanı was strictly protected. Gecekondus began appearing in the 1950s and Okmeydanı has now become a densely populated neighborhood cut by major highways. It is a difficult place to walk, run or ride a bike and shooting arrows would probably result in police arrest. However, the İstanbul Ansiklopedisi indicates that 55 of an original 132 ok abidesi (stone pillars set up as monuments to the achievements of champion archers) can still be found in various parts of the neighborhood.
While archery training and contests were centered at Okmeydanı, oil wrestlers competed on a number of fields in and around the city. In addition to Okmeydanı, there were wrestling fields near the Theodosian Walls, next to the Süleymaniye Camii, in Kadırga and in Kağıthane. Contests between oil wrestlers also took place at the Topkapı Palace and, in the 19th century, at the Ayazağa summer palace in Maslak.
Oil wrestlers trained in İstanbul's wrestling lodges (pehlivan tekkeleri), of which there were several. The most famous of these, the Demir tekkeleri, were founded during the reign of Fatih Mehmet in the 15th century. In the 19th century the fates of wrestlers began to rise and fall according to the tastes and policies of successive rulers. In 1826, wrestling lodges were closed along with the Bektâşi lodges when Mahmut II disbanded the Janissaries. Mahmut II, however, continued to support some wrestlers and held matches at the palace.
Abdülaziz (1861-1876) included the best wrestlers in his entourage and had promising young athletes sent to the capital for training at a facility in İhlamur. Once Abdülaziz was removed from power, his wrestlers were sent away, some finding opportunities in villages like Maltepe, Beykoz and Dudullu and others traveling farther to earn their keep.
Wrestlers and wrestling returned to İstanbul after Abdülhamit II (1876-1909) was dethroned, and in 1911, a tent was set up in the Talimhane Square in Taksim for wrestling matches that continued throughout the month of Ramadan. Similarly, after declining in prestige and popularity due to the introduction of firearms, archery did not reappear until Atatürk reintroduced the sport in 1937.
Throughout history, sports have been linked with military training. Even today many Turkish men associate running, for example, with their military service. While private fitness centers and voluntary sports associations are on the rise in İstanbul, the city's sports culture still depends heavily on local and national politics, and inadequate urban planning restricts its development.

Opened on 4 August 2008 in the presence of the Minister of Sports Secretary General and the
Cameroon Archery Federation (FECATIR) President, this manufacturing seminar allowed training
about twenty carpenters.
From 7 August, it also offered the opportunity to try their hand at archery to the biggest number
of Cameroonians who had come to discover this sport. On 9 August, the training of the volunteers
begun for the function of presenter. At the end of the training, the best presenters were rewarded.
This seminar was the object of a big campaign of media coverage at the level of all national press

The New York Times reports today that U.S. Olympic archery coach Kisik Lee has been pressuring archery team members to join his evangelical Christian faith.
This advocacy for a religious viewpoint goes against everything that America represents.
The Times reports that Lee’s advocacy has raised concerns in the United States Olympic Committee, and some in the elite archery community feel uncomfortable with his proselytizing.
The mother of a teenage archer who lived at the center said she worried that complaining about it might jeopardize her daughter’s future in the sport.
Coach Lee had the audacity to say that coaching was more of a challenge for him when members of the team did not share his Christian beliefs.
“I don’t want to have any favorites,” he said.
“I would love to be fair for everyone. But sooner or later, if they can see through me God, that’s what I want to try to do. I’m not God, and I can’t drive them to God, but I can pray for them.”
It is plain wrong and plainly un-American to foist one’s viewpoints on another.
Equally distressing, it is simply unethical for any person in a role of authority, such as a coach, to proselytize to young people who are in his charge.
The disreputable actions of Coach Lee in forcing his religion on the Olympic athletes exhibits not only an unethical misuse of his position, but a direct link to cult-like activities spelled out by world renowned UC-Berkeley expert on Mind Control, Dr. Margaret Thaler Singer.
The U.S. Olympic Committee must take action now to stop the unacceptable and un-American behavior of its archery coach.

But on Monday, he encountered an unexpected hurdle in his way — a Tulare city parks ordinance that police believe may forbid him from practicing at home — with the Paralympics about two weeks away.
Fabry, who lost his right arm and leg in a motorcycle accident in 1988, picked up archery 10 years ago. For the past eight years he has practiced in the driveway of his central Tulare home, sometimes venturing across the street to increase distance.
So when a Tulare police officer told him Monday morning he couldn't practice in his driveway or from across the street directly into his driveway, he and his family were surprised.
"[The officer] said I need to stop shooting because it's against city ordinance and if I continue I could be arrested," said Fabry, who added that intrigued officers even have stopped to watch him practice in the past. "For this to happen is just ridiculous."
He holds numerous titles, both as a Paralympic archer and in the regular archery circuit. He won two bronze medals at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. He has won three Paralympic World Championships and holds numerous national and state able-bodied archery records.
It's 22 yards from Fabry's target to the end of his driveway, he said. Backing up to the opposite side of the street gives him a 42-yard shot to the target, which is enclosed on three sides in his garage.
"You shoot 70 meters in the competition," Fabry said. That's roughly 78 yards, he said.
Tulare Police Capt. Wes Hensley said the reason Fabry has been able to practice from the street so long is that no one had filed a complaint until Monday, which then required further research. Police did not release the name of the person who filed the complaint.
Ordinance cited
Tulare ordinance 8.36.170, which Tulare police have referenced in Fabry's matter, states: "No person other than peace officers in the discharge of their duties shall use, maintain, possess, fire, or discharge any firearm, airgun, bow and arrow, sling shot or any other weapon potentially dangerous to wildlife or human safety except in areas, at times and under conditions designated by the Director for such use."
However, the code police referenced is listed as a city park ordinance, so it's unknown how it applies to homes or streets. ("Director" in the code likely refers to the head of the city's park and recreation department.)
On Monday afternoon, Hensley said he doesn't know if Fabry's use of his bow and arrow in his own driveway is against the city ordinance or not.
"I need to get a hold of the city attorney to find out," the police captain said. As of Monday evening the matter had not been decided. A call made by the Advance-Register to city attorney Steve Kabot's office after business hours did not reach the attorney.
Beijing awaits
Fabry plans to leave Tulare on Aug. 31 for the Olympic Training Center in Colorado before leaving for China.
Fabry's father-in-law, Leon Snow, said Tulare should give Fabry more encouragement and support — as it has for its Olympians from the 1940s and 1950s.
"This town got behind Bob Mathias. They got behind Sim Iness. But my son, who's shooting in the Paralympics, they can't get behind him?" Snow said.
Fabry's neighbor, retired teacher Ron Parr, said he has no problem with Fabry practicing in his own driveway or even from across the street.
"He is the most careful and conscientious person when it comes to his shooting," Parr said. "I am proud to be his neighbor because he is an Olympic champion. It's an honor."
Fabry said the situation may lead to a drastic decision. "If I can't shoot here at my house, I will probably move to another city where I can do my job," he said.

ZHANG (CHN) takes gold to break Korea's 24-year reign

ZHANG Juan Juan (CHN) broke Korea's 24-year stranglehold on the women's individual event, claiming the gold medal with the last arrow of a riveting final against PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR) at the Olympic Green Archery Field on Thursday.

To win the Olympic title, No. 27 seed ZHANG had to beat all of the top three seeded Korean women, including PARK, the individual gold medallist at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

ZHANG won the final over PARK 110-109.

In the semi-final, ZHANG took out the No. 1 ranked archer in the world, YUN Ok-Hee, 115-109. ZHANG's score equalled the Olympic record PARK set earlier in the day. In the quarterfinal, she beat JOO Hyung-Jung (KOR) 106-101.

YUN Ok-Hee (KOR) went on to win the bronze medal against KWON Un Sil (PRK) 109-106.

Khatuna LORIG (USA) was fifth, Nami HAYAKAWA (JPN) sixth, JOO seventh and Mariana AVITIA (MEX) eighth.

RUBAN (UKR) squashes Korean hopes for individual title

Viktor RUBAN (UKR) prevented PARK Kyung-Mo (KOR) from winning Korea's first men's individual Olympic title with the very last arrow of their gold medal match at the Olympic Green Archery Field on Friday.

In a tightly-contested gold medal match, the No. 3 seed RUBAN defeated the No. 4 seed PARK 113-112.

RUBAN was lucky to have been in the gold medal match having barely made it through the semi-finals. To shoot in the gold medal match, RUBAN had to break a 112-112 tie with Bair BADENOV (RUS) in a two-arrow shoot off.

PARK, who celebrates his birthday today, was also lucky to have been in the gold medal match. He almost didn't make it into the top four, having tied Juan Carlos STEVENS (CUB) in the quarterfinal match 108-108. On a two-arrow shoot off, PARK launched a 10 to break the tie. PARK then beat Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX) in the semi-finals, 115-112.

RUBAN will add his individual gold medal to his team bronze won at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. PARK will add his individual silver medal won in Beijing to his two team gold medals from the Athens Games and the Beijing Games.

In the bronze medal match, the No. 31 seed BADENOV defeated the No. 1 seed SERRANO, 110-105.

Juan Carlos STEVENS was fifth, Ryuichi MORIYA (JPN) sixth, Victor WUNDERLE (USA) seventh and CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) eighth.

South Korean Archers Banned for Pulling Out of Training

South Korea's world-class archers were ordered to clean up city sewage, stay up all night, stare at dead bodies in a crematory and climb a mountain with a rubber dinghy on their backs.
It's all part of a training regime designed to toughen them, mentally and physically, for the world outdoor archery championships in Beijing.
But the country's top four male archers -- all Olympic medallists -- said the Aug. 7-10 training was too intense and pulled out after one day. The Korea Archery Association banned them from the championship that begins Sept. 15, and from running for the national team for up to five years.
"It's a bit late to regret it, but we really did not expect to be replaced," said Kim Bo-ram, ranked fourth in the world.
The sudden gap in the ranks of South Korea's archery team highlights the gruelling methods it has used to reach the sport's top level. South Korea has won 11 gold, six silver and four bronze Olympic medals in archery since first competing in Los Angeles in 1984.
Since 1988, South Korean archers have trained by handling snakes, meditating at a Buddhist temple and walking through a haunted house full of actors in ghoulish outfits. They have also physical endurance tests at military camps.
At this year's training at a navy base in the southern port of Jinhae, both men and women carted an 80-kilogram boat up a mountain, and swam in the sea until their body temperatures plummeted. Four female archers completed the exercise.
"This training has contributed to South Korean archers' performance by helping them control themselves and work under pressure," said Kim Il-chi, vice chairman of the private archery association.
He said other Asian nations have noted the success of South Korea's archers and are studying the training program; China has sent archers to South Korea to run through the same regimen.
Raoul Theeuws, the Belgian vice-president of archery's world committee, known as FITA, said South Korea's tough training teaches discipline.
"But the system works effectively on Asian archers because it suits their social context. It could never work in Western countries," Theeuws said.
Other South Korean athletes undergo severe training. Experts in tae kwon do, a martial art that originated in Korea, sit in cold weather with little clothing and pour cold water on their bodies. When pro golfer Se Ri Pak was a teenager, her father taught her courage by forcing her to sleep in a cemetery. He also made her run up 15 flights of stairs and backpedal all the way down.
Kim, the vice-chairman, said this year's program was similar to previous training and that the male archers may have been too confident.
Kim, the archer, described the haunted house exercise as "a piece of cake," but disagreed they were overconfident.
"This year, we were all a bit overwhelmed by the intensity of the training and we really couldn't afford even a small injury just a month before the championships," said Kim, 28, a silver medallist in the team competition at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
The other three male archers, Jang Yong-ho, Kim Chung-tae and Chang Jae-hun, declined comment.
South Korea's top female archer, who has less experience than the men, acknowledged that the training was harsh.
"There were some side effects, but I feel good and I think it has helped me prepare for the coming championships," said 18-year-old Park Sung-hyun.
Last year, South Korean archers trained for the Sydney Olympics by shooting arrows in front of thousands of spectators at a baseball park in Seoul. As instructed, the crowd cheered when the archers shot well and booed when they were off the mark.

Two sisters from Lothersdale have had some excellent success in archery with the eldest Danielle Brown going to Paralympics and the youngest Georgina set to compete for Great Britain in the World Championships later this year.
ParalympicsGB has named Danielle as part of the 11-strong archery squad to represent Britain at this summer's Paralympic Games in Beijing.
Twenty-year-old Danielle is the youngest member of the ParalympicsGB archery squad for this summer's Games.
Danielle, who took up archery five years ago and within three years had made it to the international squad, won two gold medals at the world championships in Korea in 2007.
She said: "Going to Beijing will be a big thrill and I'm very excited about it.
"It is the result of a lot of hard work and I've actually deferred my university degree to concentrate on Beijing."
Danielle is joined in the ParalympicsGB archery team by Paralympic champions John Cavanagh (London) and Kathy Critchlow Smith (Oxford) as well as Games debutants Mike Karphillides (Luton), Mick Beard (Cornwall), Pippa Britton (Newport, South Wales), Lynne Burton (Chelmsford), Mel Clarke (Norwich), Kay Lucas (Ludlow), Fred Stevens (Hinckley, Leicestershire) and John Stubbs (Warrington).
Head coach and archery team manager Tim Hazell, said: "Danielle is a superb young talent that just gets better and better and is looking to add to her gold at the worlds.

"Overall this is a very strong squad we are sending out and I have no doubt that we will be bringing home some medals.
"I am delighted for all the archers who have made the squad, they are all there on merit and they will do us all proud."
ParalympicsGB Chief Executive for the Beijing Games, Phil Lane said: "It's fantastic to see so many archers qualify for the ParalympicsGB team for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.
"With the inclusion of the compound bow for the first time, ParalympicsGB have the opportunity to bring home more medals."
The Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games opens on September 6 and closes on September 17.
The archery events at the Games take place at the Olympic Green Archery Field and will run from September 9 to 15.
Following in her sister's footsteps Georgina Brown has followed in the footsteps of her elder sister Danielle's archery success with some excellent accomplishments of her own.
Like her sister and indeed the rest of the family, Geogie shoots the compound bow, which her father Duncan Brown said is unfortunately not yet an event in the Olympics (currently this is the recurve bow only).
This year however the compound bow has been added to the Paralympics for the first time and Danielle is a member of the 11-strong squad.
Georgie, a 15-year-old pupil at South Craven School and member of Aire Valley Archers, however, has had some individual successes of her own and has been selected as the compound girl representative to shoot for the England team in the Junior Outdoor Home Nations Tournament to be held this Saturday at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire as part of the Junior Champs Weekend.
Georgie's latest success is to be selected to shoot for the Great Britain archery team for the Youth World Championships in Antalya, Turkey, from October 6-12.
In order to be selected Georgie first needed to attain scores above a set criteria in order to be invited to a selection shoot held on June 12 at Lilleshall.
At the selection shoot three positions were available for the Compound Cadet girl category with four other girl cadets having also attained the required standard.
Georgie not only came through the morning shoot in first place but in a round-robin league table in the afternoon she won every match to come through in first place.
Her father Duncan said: "Georgie has come on leaps and bounds this year. I personally think she a lot of potential. She's breaking all of Danielle's records."
In addition to the achievements already mentioned, Georgie's other archery successes include: Northern Counties girl indoor compound champion 2005, 2006 and 2007 (shot every November - the girl champion is for U-18s).
Yorkshire Indoors girl indoor compound champion 2006 and 2008 (shot each March - the girl champion is for U-18s).
Yorkshire Target (outdoor) compound girl champion 2007 and 2008 (shot each June - the girl champion is for U-18s).
Junior National Indoor Champion 2007 - U-16 girl compound bow (shot each December).

Written in Osmanli Turkish, there are now paragraphs, and chapter headings are set in ornamented parentheses. There
are 278 pages.
The page size measures 6” by 8½”, and the box enclosing the text is 3?” by 6¾”. The spine of the book is cloth, and the
boards are marbled on the outer surface.
The back of the book has a folded page with 21 illustrations bearing Turkish captions. Most of these appear in pages 273-

Pages 3-4 contain the firman, or Imperial Edict issued by Sultan Mahmud II in 1836, as a result of which Kani undertook

Archery Class for Teachers

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Section will host an Archery in the Schools Program training on August 12 and 13 at the Summersville Armory in Summersville, West Virginia, according to Jerry Westfall, Program Coordinator.

“We have tried for some time to arrange AIS training in the central part of the state, and we are happy to have succeeded,” says Westfall. “This training will allow area schools to participate in DNR’s largest and fastest growing educational program. Since its inception in 2004, more than 30,000 students have been introduced to archery as part of their physical education classes in 140 West Virginia schools. We wanted to show our appreciation to Summersville, which hosted the successful 2008 AIS State Tournament and will be hosting the 2009 AIS State Tournament, by holding this training in Summersville. Of course, since this is a state-wide program, teachers from around the state may participate in any of our trainings.”

Teachers interested in attending this free training in Summersville have until July 15 to register. Since classroom size is limited to only 25 teachers and slots are available on a first come, first served basis, teachers are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
Also, more than one teacher may consider enrolling from individual schools, especially if schools are interested in having AIS in multiple PE classes and/or after-hours training for tournament competition.
“I encourage all interested educators in the area to sign up and introduce this tremendously popular program to their schools,” says Westfall. “As added incentives, the training is free to school employees, and teachers may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours.”

SETTING TO rest all doubts about her current form, Dola Banerjee (date of birth; June 2,1980) has succeeded in getting selected for the 2008 Beijing Olympics archery event. At the end of the four-day trials on Sunday (June 29) for the mega event at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Eastern Centre, she secured her second successive Olympics berth. She was second with 5141 points out of a possible 5760 points. Dola Banerjee would join up with two other participants V Pranita and L Bombyla Devi and head for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Let us join in wishing them success and hope that they bring home the medals.

To qualify for the Olympics, each archer had to shoot 144 arrows daily for four days over a distance of 70m for a total of 576 arrows. However, at the actual Olympics, an archer will shoot only 72 arrows over the 70m distance in the FITA round qualification. Only 64 archers make it to the Olympics round knockout individual championship and top 16 nations for the team championship. The event of archery would be held over a seven day period from August 9 to 15 at the Olympic Green Archery Field, which is a temporary venue on the Olympic Green in Beijing’s Olympic Park.

Dola Banerjee is a talented women archer of India. She has inspired the women archers to carve niche in this sport as the first woman archer from India. She undertook training from the Tata Archery Academy at Jamshedpur and won the 42nd World Outdoor Target Archery Championship in New York and qualified for the Olympics.

She achieved international success in a sport traditionally considered to be a male bastion. She was the first Indian woman archer to qualify for the Olympics; won the 18th Golden Arrow Grand Prix tournament at Antalya; gold in 2006 South Asian federation (SAF) Games. She won the world championship in archery and is a recipient of the prestigious Arjun award for sports persons in 2005. Her first international appearance was in Youth World Championship in San Diego in 1996. Dola Banerjee became world champion in archery by winning the gold medal in the women’s individual recurve competition at the archery world cup held at Dubai, in November 2007. She is a cousin of the singers Shaan and Sagarika.

The sad part is that the organisations seldom come forward to receive individuals who win awards from overseas. It happened with Vishwanathan Anand and also with Dola Bannerji. This is in sharp contrast to huge crowds who usually gather at airports to receive their cricket heroes – they spend hours in all types of inclement weather to welcome them and take out victory processions. We saw it when Dhoni returned after the T-2-0 World Cup win – traffic came to a standstill in Mumbai. However, in the case of Dola, there were only a handful of persons from the archery federation and a few enthusiasts to receive her at the Dum Dum airport when she returned victorious from Dubai on November 24, 2007.

Korea’s National Archery Team Adopts New Training Method

For the past 20 years Korea has been seen as one of the top competitors in the sport of archery. And to keep this title the Korean national archery team is taking its training methods to a whole new level
The athletes are using simulation training to stay in tip-top shape for the upcoming 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. This approach allows for athletes to re-enact real situations similar to the ones they will be facing in a few months time with a manufactured audience and recorded crowd sounds.
At the Korea National Training Center in Taeneung, Seoul, the only national training village for athletes in Korea, archers say the simulation training method is proving to be quite beneficial.
Although the Chinese athletes have a homeground advantage, with this innovative training method Korean archers say they are confident that Korea will be able to maintain its top position in the field.

In the summer 2010 the IOC will organize the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The objective is to get together about 3500 young and talented athletes aged between 14 and 18 years old.

Most of the Summer International Federations are involved in the 2010 edition of the YOG. As it is the case for the Olympic Games, winter editions of the YOG will also take place, based on the same format of the Olympics.

FITA has been among the first International Federation to react to the IOC call. An Ad Hoc commission has been created and the collaboration with the IOC Sports Department is important.

With the goal to present an attractive competition format for a limited number of athletes, FITA is proposing a five days competition with 32 boys and 32 girls participating. A ranking round at 70m will take place on the first day, with eliminations and Olympic Round Finals on days 3, 4 and 5. The second day will be dedicated to a mixed team competition, 1 girl and 1 boy, in match format (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, bronze and gold).

The IOC also wishes young officials and young technical experts to take part in the competitions. FITA would like to propose 13 International Judges, acting under the responsibility of the Judges Committee: seven judges being under 42 years old and six being between 18 and 25 years old. These judges would be specially trained for this event and would be a good asset for the future of our sport.

The IOC wishes the Youth Olympic Games to be a return to the origin of the Olympic Games spirit. The Cultural and Sportive dimension of the Games will be important as well as the image of Fair-Play.

VVC teacher dies after freak archery accident

SPRING VALLEY LAKE — An assistant professor at Victor Valley College died Thursday following a freak accident when an archery bow broke, penetrating his head, officials said.
When the compound bow broke, a 14-inch portion lodged in Robert Feddersen’s head, according to his friend and colleague Paul Tonning. The accident happened Monday afternoon at Feddersen’s Spring Valley Lake home.
Feddersen, 36, was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to San Bernardino County Fire Department officials. There he underwent surgery to remove the broken bow.
“The family had to make a decision to either leave the rod in place, which would have meant very little chance for Robert’s survival, or operate and remove it, which meant he would have the chance of severe hemorrhaging,” said Tonning’s blog. “It was not an easy decision to say the least, but the family opted for surgery.”
Feddersen took a turn for the worse and died on Thursday, according to Bill Greulich, spokesman for the college.
“It’s just a terrible loss,” Gruelich said. “I’m saddened by the news and feel for his family and friends.”
Tonning has known Feddersen for 10 years when Feddersen was a student in Tonning’s class.
“He’s very compassionate and very passionate about his job and about his teaching,” said an emotional Tonning.
Fellow professor Shane Thomas, who along with Feddersen and Tonning were known as the Three Amigos, also felt a great loss at Feddersen’s death.
“He’s a really good friend,” Thomas said. “He’s the kind of guy who would drop whatever he’s doing to help anyone.”
