As DP photographer Megan Lovett spent her time at Monticello walking with Bush and his entourage, I was left to cover the protest at the bottom of the hill. With about a hundred anti-Bush protestors situated outside his home on HWY20, pro-Bush supporter Jeff Wray stood alone holding up his American flag as the President drove past. It created the little balance needed for that situation. It was a good moment.Andrew Shurtleffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074252621395340729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7807205492868495906.post-56488994403085184412008-07-22T12:58:00.001-07:002008-07-22T13:21:24.421-07:00Rosey in the Frame

Sometimes reporters and web editors can get a little too close to their subjects. After several hours of set up, game action and tear down it was time to view the images. Several cameras didn't fire properly (user error most likely) and there were a lot of images with the referees behinds in them. The ceiling remote produced this image.

I thought this is really a cool shot. By quickly I mean 3 days which seems like a long time but its really not when you have so many things to do: photography, write the story, cutlines and online slideshows. I overlooked a few important images to the story which was written after the layout was completed and in place. The fall colors were amazing and election coverage was filled with wonderfully emotional images. Upon my arrival I realized I had never seen these flying machines up close. In a matter of 30 minutes the balloons had taken shape forming massive balls of color with small baskets that looked like tiny picnic baskets attached to birthday balloon. They were huge, probably 3-4 stories. It was then that I realized my regular wide angle lens was not going to work. I went back to my car to retrieve my 15mm fisheye lens which rarely comes out of the bag. One by one the balloons began lifting in the air. It was amazing to see these mammoth balls of hot air lift almost effortlessly into the blue sky. All on board cheered their successful departure and away they went. Just another day living the life of a photographer.-AndrewAndrew Shurtleffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074252621395340729noreply@blogger.com
