In the summertime, homeowners begin to relax a little bit and my be a little more lax on their home security.

Doors may not be locked and windows will certainly be open for more of the day. It is still important to remember to lock all of your doors and if you can, your windows as well. There is no easier way for an intruder to get into your home than via an open window on any level of your home.

Making your home less of a target it important as well. Sometimes, summer time "equipment" is left outside and perhaps in the front yard. Make sure to put away toys, bikes, surfboards, and whatever else you may be using during the warmer months, as cluttered yards with expensive things may lead someone to believe that you are unorganized and may not be thinking about your home security.

A would-be burglar might also be enticed to look for other expensive items around and in your home. On the contrary, home security companies are thriving.

I wrote recently about Brinks Home Security and how the company is still doing fine in these times of recession. Companies that build and sell home safes has fared well too in the early part of this year as more and more people become concerned with protecting their own belongings and upping their home security.

Home safes provide an added layer of security, namely by protecting your most valuable possessions (beside your family of course). A safe is a great addition to your security repertoire if you have expensive jewelry, important documents that can't be destroyed, or even a sex tape like Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee. That last part is sort of a joke because supposedly that video of the two "stars" on their honeymoon was stolen out of a family safe.

They must have forgotten to lock it up or gave the wrong assistant the code. If you are looking for an added bit of protection, a safe may be a solid option. They're not for everyone, but in many situations they make sense.

C. Everyone has that one widow that doesn't quite shut or the lock is bad. This is exactly what a burglar is looking for--somewhere he can slip in and out undetected.

Make sure your windows and doors lock and shut properly as a part of your home security regimen. This is a pretty good list of cheap and effective things you can do to your home in regard to your doors, windows, lighting systems, garage, and landscape.

One of the keys to protecting yourself is making yourself less of a target. By doing some relatively minor things, you can send out the signals that you are putting up a fight.

From the list, here are some recommendations on how to make your windows more secure.

Windows

• Place wooden dowel rod or PVC pipe into track so windows that are left open a crack cannot be fully opened from outside.

• Use secondary locks on windows to keep them at particular open width.

• Install a sensor-activated, audible alarm to scare off potential intruders.

Read more about home security systems.

C. That is, if you choose to install it. These specialized door lock systems seem pretty high tech, which is a very good thing. I always rant on this site about how people don't do the simple things, like make sure the locks on their doors and windows are not only up to par and strong, but that they actually need TO LOCK THEM!

So in my book, spending a little bit of time choosing the lock mechanism you want to use and deciding if you want to integrate it into your home alarm system is time well spent.

Here's more from the article, describing the capabilities of this product: "When a homeowner enters a code to unlock the lock's motorized deadbolt, it can also disarm the alarm system at the same time. This feature also works in reverse: When the alarm system is armed doors can simultaneously be locked. The doors can be locked via remote control in the home..."

C. This is happening for a few reasons.

Firstly, in times of crisis (economic or otherwise), people start to worry about their own safety and security. Secondly, working people have lost a lot of their trust in banks and overpaid CEOs. As a result, many people are purchasing heavy duty safes for their homes in order to protect their valuable belongings and even stash cash away.

The American safe market is doing just fine.

C. Is this something that people really do?

It got me to thinking that there are quite a few dumb things we all do in our daily lives that may potentially put us at risk. One such thing is not locking our windows and doors properly. Some people don't take the time to make sure that their home exteriors are properly sealed. This is a bad move. But it's something that everyone does. We take for granted our safety--and if we're lucky, we don't have problems with the few people who ruin it for the rest of us.

Unfortunately, sometimes the good folks run into the bad ones--in those cases, it pays to have a solid home security system in place to protect you and your home.

Watch this Brink's Home Security commercial.

C. But what if your windows could sense even just movement near them.

You may be thinking that it might be good for your home security but is the alarm going to go off every time a car drives by or a bird comes too close to the window? No, because it is a little more high tech than that. The more sensors you have on each window gives the entire system more data to calculate what kind of object is near the window and if it is a threat. Now, as you will see in this video, you can have a home security setup that is actually controlled by a wireless remote. This is pretty cool. Check out this video, which is actually like an infomercial for Guardcom. Home security proves to be a staple "product" that people are not willing to cut back on. This is a very good thing, because for many people a home alarm system or a wireless security system of some kind can really make them more secure and protected.

Read more about home security and read about one creepy home invasion that was literally saved by the bell.

Read more about Brink's Home Security.

C. A woman was held at gunpoint in the entry room of her home in an apparent burglary.

The woman reported that the men, at least one of whom was armed with a gun, were dressed in disguises that appeared to be a mixture of a mime and the Blues Brothers (the comedy act by John Belushi.) They wore white facepaint and fedoras. That sounds pretty scary.

She was held at gunpoint, but when her home security alarm was triggered the men left the scene. She was saved by the bell and nothing was stolen, but most importantly the woman was not injured. This is proof that home security systems can work!!!

C. It boils down to this: it feels good to know that you, your family, and your belongings are safe. It's really simple.

Read an excellent exchange about security in the home here in this article. It sums up a lot of the points I've tried to make on this website. The title of it is: Home security system can bring tremendous peace of mind.

Home Safe sales increase in 2009.

C. Many people like the control (not to mention the savings) that comes with installing the system yourself.

Others prefer to leave the job to a professional home security technician or specialist who may be able to do a better job. It is often a better bet to have someone who can specifically tailor an alarm system to your dwelling.

The key is specialization. Every property is different and every homeowners situation is different, so it is clear that everyone's security needs vary from case to case. Some people would be helped out by a wireless camera system, while others probably don't need that level of functionality.

I guess the point of this post is that consulting a home security company or specialist may be worth your while if you are planning on spending the time and money necessary on a security set-up for your home.

Read more articles at the home security guru.

C. Criminals and thieves know that there may be expensive gifts inside your home. They know that you may be out of town on vacation during Christmas or Thanksgiving.

They know that you may not be thinking too much about your home security. They also know that you probably don't have a security camera system set up around your home.

Make sure to lock garage doors, keep your windows closed, and be sure to lock all doors. Furthermore, having some motion detecting lights around your property may be a good way to eliminate hiding places. Another good way to eliminate the dark "unsecure" areas around your home is by keeping bushes and trees nicely trimmed.

One thing that can be a danger zone is if you string lights up on your home during the holidays and leave windows partially open to feed the wire through. Make sure not to do this. Try to find another way to do it. Even a crack in a window can be used to gain entry into your home.

The next post I will write here is about keeping you, your home, and your family safe from other things like fires from dry Christmas trees and outdoor house lights.

Good luck this year, and be safe.

C.
