Game Night at the Library

Tomorrow is a big night (Tuesday, July 15 --6:00-8:00pm) at the library. It's our annual Game Night. Gather up the kids and and be sure to stop by. You can play roulette or bingo and the kids can have fun with lots of different board games, hula hoops, and sidewalk chalk for those budding artists. We also have our own artists (library staff members) who will ply their skills as "face painters"! Soft prezels and water ice will be sold to add to the festivities. Be sure to mention this to your friends, neighbors, and family. Hope to see you there!

Coffee & Mystery - This is a mystery and suspense fiction discussion group. The group meets at 11:00am on the 3rd Thursday of the month, except during December and August. Refreshments will be served.

June 19th - Sleuths of Scandinavia: Norway & Sweden

July 17th - Shakespeareand Murder Most Foul

Reading-A-Round - This is a contemporary fiction and non-fiction book group that meets the 4th Tuesday of the month, except during December and August at 7:00pm in the 2nd floor Board Room. Refreshments will be served.

June 24 - Family Man by Shane Hayes - As a special treat, local author Shane Hayes will be our guest. Book signing.

July 22 - Lady Macbeth by Susan Fraser King

SUMMER SPLASH

Summer Splash -- a Read-What-You-Like-Event for Adults -- starts at the library on June 16. This "event" (not club) offers readers the opportunity to share books that they really enjoyed with others, and have others share their favorite "reads" with you. Free books will be given to everyone who joins, and every time you share a book -- just a matter of filling out a simple form -- you get a chance to win one of three prizes that will be awarded during the "event"!

Also, our Reference Dept. has created lots of bookmarks that will help you pick out a GREAT BOOK to take with you when you go to the beach or the mountains or your backyard! Don't forget to pick up a neat little bookmark that fits on the corner of a page to save your place.

All this activity takes place in the Reference Dept. If you have a problem finding it, just ask anyone -- "Where's the Boat" -- hence the picture at the top of this page. Enjoy your summer with friends, fiction and fun!

Recently your library entered a contest:

FOR DUMMIES 2008 LIBRARY DISPLAY CONTEST

To participate in the contest we had to create an original display of our "For Dummies Books" (which we did -- come in and take a look), and then add to the display with anything yellow and black.

One of our very creative Reference Librarians came up with the idea to use bees (YELLOW & BLACK -- GET IT!) These are a few pictures of two staff members who generously consented to dress up as bees. These pics were sent in along with our application to enter the contest.

WISH US LUCK because the grand prize winner will receive 50 For Dummies books of their choice - the 1st runner up will receive 40 For Dummies books, and the 2nd and 3rd runners up will receive 30 -- you get the picture!

Don't forget -- visit the library -- see the display -- borrow a few books or CDs or DVDs or Playaways or Books-on-Tape or...............

Craft Circle in April

Crafters are invited to join us each Thursday in April for a CRAFT CIRCLE beginning at 7pm in the Board Room on the Second Floor. Crafters of all ages are welcome.

Bring your knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking (whatever!), and join us for conversation and light refreshments. Bring a current project or start something new.

Although this is not a formal class, we're more than happy to help any beginning knitters and crocheters.

Mary Williams Read Aloud & Book Signing

One Book, One Philadelphia companion book author , Mary Williams , Brother in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan

Children and their caregivers are encouraged to attend together to hear the compelling story of eight-year-old Garang who, orphaned by a civil war in the Sudan, finds the inner strength to help lead other boys as they trek hundreds of miles seeking safety in Ethiopia and finally the United States.

Books can be purchased and Ms. Williams will sign copies after the presentation.

Panel Discussion: Can We Prevent Genocide?
Dr. Ali B. Ali-Dinar, Professor of African Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Lee Cassanelli, Assoc. Professor of History at Univ. of Pennsylvania, Chiji Akoma, Assoc. Professor of English at Villanova University and Asok Gangadean, Professor of Philosophy at Haverford College will discuss the above mentioned topic. This promises to be a very interesting and informative program.

This is a "One Book, One Philadelphia" program.

Refreshments will be served.

Friday, April 18 -- 6:30pm -- Community Room

Dinner & Mystery Night @ the Library

"Murder on Maui"

Do you watch CSI on TV? Do you fancy yourself a pretty good detective? Think you can solve a murder? If you answered "yes" to all of the above, do I have a treat for you.

You are invited to a luau style dinner and a chance to "solve a murder" (make-believe, of course!) Lots of laughs, a delicious catered meal, play acting, prizes and awards (for best detective)...sound like fun???

Computer Lessons

How would you like to use a computer as well as your children...almost? You've come the the right place! Did you know that the library offers very affordable computer classes...$5.00/workshop?
Would you like to learn how to ....
>create and print a document or letter (cut & paste, change font, etc.)
>learn to use a genealogy website
>check stock market reports
>check consumer reports
>be able to see auto repair diagrams for your auto (think Chilton)
>email you family and friends
>create a spreadsheet
>or just learn the fundamentals of using a computer
The library offers lessons for all of the above. There are morning, afternoon and evening sessions.

Below is a list of sessions being offered during March:

Library online resource sampling (check consumer reports, stock market reports, geneology websites, etc.)

It's that time of the year again, but don't panic! HELP! HELP! HELP!

Did you know that the library has lots of income tax forms and instruction booklets? And, did you also know that if we don't have the one you're looking for, our skillful Reference Librarians can find the form on the computer and print a copy for you? We have a fairly large supply of forms and booklets, but don't wait 'til the last minute to get the one you need...stop in soon!

We aim to make TAX TIME a little less stressful!

Here's a little hint...while you're at the library pick up a few books or movies or music CDs that you can read, watch or listen to after you're finished doing your taxes and can finally relax!

Hi...It's the Wizard!

Did you know that the library recently added 5 more public access computers ? They are located on the second floor just across from our Children's Room. During the week the computers are available for adults from 9:30 to 2:30 and from 5:00 to 9:30pm. From 2:30 to 5:00 these computers are reserved for our after school teen customers. On weekends they are available to everyone the entire time the library is open.

When you check out the computers on the second floor, make sure to notice our new-and-improved floor covering on the steps. I think you'll really like the new look!

A REMINDER: THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 18 FOR A STAFF IN-SERVICE DAY.

Jane Austen Display

Hello it's me again. Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays!

I'd like to tell you about a new display at the library. Our ever creative Reference Dept. has set up a Jane Austen display that is really very attractive. Many of the books written by Ms. Austen and several books about Ms. Austen are shown in such a fashion as to resemble the era in which she lived.

Our Reference Librarians also created bookmarks with authors and their books whose novels are similar to Jane Austen's books. So....if you like to read Jane Austen, you will now have plenty of other books to borrow and enjoy.

Finally, on the display table there are bookmarks supplied by PBS advertising their "Complete Jane Austen" series starting January 13 and continuing through April 6. New adaptations of six Jane Austen novels will be televised -- one each week. Stop by the library and pick up a few of these booksmarks -- for yourself and possibly for a friend or neighbor.

Staff Picks

I know this is a busy time of year for a lot of people, but if you would like a little respite from all the madness I have a great idea.

We have a program at the library called "Staff Picks". The coordinator of this program asked library staff members to think of one of their favorite books, and write a small review of the book -- just enough to whet the appetites of our customers. She then put all of these books (with reviews attached) on display in the Reference Dept. So.....if you're short on time, don't have a lot of time to browse, but would like to relax with a really great book, all you have to do is stop by the display, read the reviews and check out the book (or books) that really interest you. By the way, the book I chose is there, and I'm telling you that once I picked it up I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN UNTIL I FINISHED IT! I'M NOT KIDDING!!!

P.S. -- When you visit the library take a minute to check out the two glass cases in the lobby. They were designed and decorated by two of our very creative staff members. I'm sure you'll agree that they did a GREAT JOB.

'Tis the Season

This past Sunday (December 2) Greta Larson, Christine Nass and Kim Robson, professional singers who live in the area, entertained several Haverford Twp. families -- moms, dads, & their kids --with a performance of Victorian Carols and traditional holiday songs. The singers were all dressed in traditional Victorian garb which added a special touch to this program. After the performance, light refreshments -- cookies, brownies, coffee, tea & juice were served. What a way to get into the holiday mood! As soon as the photos from this program are downloaded, I will post them so you can see what a great time was had by all!

Hi Everyone, It’s me again (The Wizard)

I’d like to talk with you about a program we presented at the library last week. We called it “Book Bites Luncheon”. First a delicious lunch was prepared and served by the library’s program coordinator, Kathy. The lunch consisted of assorted cheeses & fruit, escarole soup, Salad Nicoise, antipasta, Greek salad, Couscous salad, Mediterranean chicken salad and assorted breads & rolls, Are you ready for desserts?…Portuguese cream and fruit, chocolate teramisu, Moroccan spiced cake with almonds & caramelized oranges and (last, but not least…COOKIES). I'm stuffed after just typing the menu. Kathy called all this her Mediterranean Table.

After lunch, 70 of your friends and neighbors were treated to several book reviews presented by our staff librarians, Below you can read a synopsis of a few of the books that were featured. I don’t want to give you too much information, ‘cause I’m hoping that you will stop in the library and pick up a copy of the book that really grabbed your attention…always a method to my madness!
