R. Foster's first novel, ANGELS OF VENICE, is coming out this October.

Here's the synopsis:

ANGELS OF VENICE is a dark and intriguing story of murder and transformation that takes place in the small town of Venice, New York. At the center is the chief of police, Eliza Hamilton. She finds herself investigating a series of homicides that seemingly have no motive and almost no clues. Except for one. “Tommy Bob”—a vampire creature she made up as a child has suddenly entered the real world, as the name carved into the arm of each victim. At first, the murders appear meaningless, but they are not. There is purpose behind them and at the center are the Angels—creatures that look like everyone else but can manipulate our emotions and obsessions for amusement or kill with a single thought if it suits their purpose. For Eliza, and those close to her, the Angels will offer what is most desired. But the cost will be high, and points to an uncertain future for both Eliza and the town.

BLACK BUTTERFLIES Now Available for Pre-Order!

<img style="display:block;
NEHW member Paul Tremblay's debut novel, THE LITTLE SLEEP, is out now.

Here's a synopsis:

Mark Genevich is a South Boston P.I. with a little problem: he’s narcoleptic, and he suffers from the most severe symptoms, including hypnogogic hallucinations. These waking dreams wreak havoc for a guy who depends on real-life clues to make his living.

Clients haven’t exactly been beating down the door when Mark meets Jennifer Times—daughter of the powerful local D.A. and a contestant on American Star—who walks into his office with an outlandish story about a man who stole her fingers. He awakes from his latest hallucination alone, but on his desk is a manila envelope containing risqué photos of Jennifer. Are the pictures real, and if so, is Mark hunting a blackmailer, or worse?

David Ulin of the Los Angeles Times says, "The Little Sleep offers up an interesting gloss on the detective genre, in which the deepest and most profound mystery has less to do with any crime per se than with the enduring enigma of the self."

Available in bookstores everywhere.

For more information, check out the following websites:

http://www.paultremblay.net/
http://www.thelittlesleep.com/

IN SICKNESS SOLD TO SKULLVINES PRESS

Horror writer L.L. The winning names and prizes will be announced on the Shirley Jackson Awards website, http://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org./
The donating party will mail or deliver the prize to the lucky winner.
All proceeds support the Shirley Jackson Awards.

Lottery Information website:
http://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org/lottery/

List of All Lottery Items:
http://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org/store/

DARK DREAMERS - THE SERIES - AVAILABLE ON DVD NOW!

They’ve created the dreams that mark our nightmares, forging an unforgettable worldof dark fantasy, horror and suspense. This class will help hone the tools you'll need to write genre fiction--be it science fiction, fantasy, or horror--with a distinctly literary bent. In addition to the weekly workshopping of short stories and novel fragments, students will be given a background on the genres' histories and their respective subgenres, strategies for using surrealism and postmodernism in their work, approaches to using "real world" research as a way to flesh out otherworldly settings and narratives, and ways to use the unreal as a tool to make metaphoric statements that can only be articulated with fantastic trappings. Other topics covered will be strategies for marketing your work, techniques for idea generating, and protocols for developing their work with the help of editors and agents. The goal is to give you a solid grounding in the demands of fantastic fiction, and a better understanding of literary potential of your favorite genres.

$425/$400 members
10 Sundays in Boston, 6pm – 9pm
Begins January 18th
Instructor: Michael Marano
Registration Deadline: January 13th (EXTENDED - SEE BELOW)

NOTE: ENROLLMENT REGISTRATION HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO THURSDAY, JANUARY 15TH AND THERE ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR REDUCED TUITION.

TRAPS - AVAILABLE NOW!!

TRAPS - the new anthology from DarkHart Press, edited by NEHW member Scott T. No place is safe, for the few that have not been infected. This is their story. It is also the story of Lieutenant William Dobbs who wanders the dead lands.Michael Presutti has created a world where monsters truly exist. Where life and death hang in the balance each day of one's survival. The short stories presented here come together to form a complete picture of devastation and horror that comes to a exciting conclusion in the final chapter of Last Words.

MICHAEL PRESUTTI discovered the joys of writing when he was nineteen years old, and has been writing short stories and novels ever since. He lives, and works, in Massachusetts, with his family. He loves books, and collects them. He is presently working on a new novel that he hopes you will enjoy as much as this one.

For more info, check out : Outskirts Press, Inc. online at mailto:info@outskirtspress.com

Goodbye, Joe McGee

We got some very sad news today. Horror writer (and NEHW member) Joe McGee died last night in his sleep. Joe was only 23-years old. He was a friendly, genuinely nice guy who was very enthusiastic about writing, and about the horror genre in general.

After talking to him in emails the past couple of years, it was nice to finally meet him in person at this year's ROCK AND SHOCK convention in October. I am therefore hereby offering them, first come, first serve, to anyone who'll promise to post an honest review at Amazon or B&N online. Interested? Just click contact (at my site for those reading via RSS), type a few sentences about why you'd like to read the book, include a snail-mail address, and I'll send you a copy just as long as, as they say, supplies last!

TheRule of Won is a very wry look at help-yourself books such as the Oprah-beloved mega-seller, The Secret. In Rule, a group of high school students devoted to one such book's "you-can-and-should-have-it-all" principle slowly turns violent. The only thing in their way is hapless slacker, Caleb Dunne, who isn't sure what he believes. There's humor, adventure, message boards aplenty, and advance reaction has been fantastic. My editor tells me she's proud to be involved in publishing it, and frankly I consider it my best YA effort to date.

The copies I'm offering are ARCs (Advance Review Copies for those unfamiliar) -- they're paperback, not hardcover like the release version, and not fully copyedited, so no points off for typos, please. Looking forward to hearing from you, whoever you turn out to be!

Stefan Petrucha
stefan@petrucha.com
http://www.petrucha.com/

FRAN FRIEL CONQUERS THE WORLD!

A little Fran Friel update. The hardcover signed limited edition copies of MAMA'S BOY AND OTHER DARK TALES are finally shipping. Proceeds from the book will benefit the Shirley Jackson Awards.

Jack M. Haringa is a member of the Board of Advisors to the Shirley Jackson Awards. He is an author and teacher, as well as co-editor, with S.T. Joshi, of the critical journal Dead Reckonings. The contributing authors to Jack Haringa Must Die! are his friends and respected colleagues.

In February of 2008, while in attendance at the Boskone convention in Boston, a group of writers discussed the fictional fate of characters named after Jack Haringa: he'd already been killed in two works by Brian Keene and in a book by AJ Matthews. Thusly inspired, friends organized "Kill Jack Haringa on Your Blog Day" for March 7th, 2008. Reports of Jack's death circulated throughout the blogosphere, with scores of participants. Jack Haringa Must Die! is a compilation of the best of those blog entries, plus original, never-read-before death scenarios from James A. Moore and best-selling author, Christopher Golden.

All contributors offered their unique talents and their time to this endeavor, and under the guidance of Bram Stoker Award-nominated author Nicholas Kaufmann what was once only in the ether is now in print. Deep appreciation goes out to Jack Haringa for loaning his name to this endeavor, without which this book would not have been possible.

The Table of Contents for Jack Haringa Must Die! is:

Death to Haringa! – Jack Ketchum
Scratch – Seth Lindberg
Grammar of the Dead – Brian Keene
fisticuffs in broad daylight!: a lance polynomial adventure! – s.j. bagley
The Fate of Poor Jack Haringa – Paul G. National Book Critics Circle Award-winning novelist Jonathan Lethem has called Jackson “one of this century’s most luminous and strange American writers,” and multiple generations of authors would agree.

The 2007 Shirley Jackson Awards will be presented on Sunday, July 20th 2008, at Readercon 19, Conference on Imaginative Literature, in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Websites: http://www.ShirleyJacksonAwards.org
http://www.readercon.org

FRAN FRIEL'S "MAMA'S BOY AND OTHER DARK TALES" AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER

Fran Friel's upcoming collection, MAMA’S BOY AND OTHER DARK TALES, is open for pre-order at Apex. The stories were compiled and edited by Tim Deal, a former Seacoast, NH musician and founder of The NH Edge Digital Magazine and Music Series.

Deal’s foray into fiction publishing occurred in November 2007 when he launched SHROUD MAGAZINE, The Journal of Dark Fiction and Art. BENEATH THE SURFACE was released on the heels of Shroud’s inaugural issue, which has garnered a subscriber base that extends around the globe. Deal is currently preparing the second issue of Shroud Magazine for print in late March.

“It’s my goal to introduce the wonder and thrill of speculative fiction to a much wider audience.” Said Deal. “To that end, I have enlisted some of the top names in dark fiction to fill our pages. Our fist issue alone featured rare and original work from Michael Laimo, Tom Piccirilli, and Tim Waggoner.
