Gameloft says it, others reining in Android plans

BARCELONA - French mobile phone games company Gameloft said it and other software developers were cutting back investment in developing games and other applications for Google's Android platform.

Android has won attention in the mobile industry lately, with Motorola and Sony Ericsson choosing it for their new top models.

"We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like ... many others," Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort said at an investor conference.

Rochefort said the company has cut back on investment mostly due to weaknesses of Android's application store.

"It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue," Rochefort said.

Games for iPhone generated 13 percent of Gameloft's revenue in the last quarter. "We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android," Rochefort said.

Total mobile data services should generate $169 million in 2009 and will grow at a CAGR of 9% until 2014.

By the end of 2009 the declines in annual average revenue per user (ARPU) will have been felt most severely in Asia-Pacific (-8.7% to $105) and Africa (-7.8% to $134). ARPU in 2009 in North America will have contracted, but only by -0.6% to $526). Chinese vendor says it is in talks with major mobile operators in Europe and the U.S.
ZTE Corp. plans to launch a new smartphone based on Google Inc.'s mobile operating system next year and is in talks with carriers such as Vodafone Group PLC, Verizon Wireless, France Telecom SA's Orange and T-Mobile to supply smartphones, an executive said Wednesday.

The move reflects the Chinese equipment maker's ambitions to enter the fastest growing segment of the mobile phone industry. Smartphones are devices that allow consumers to send e-mails and conduct other multi-media applications.

Traditionally, ZTE has been known to supply low-cost telecom equipment such as base stations to companies such as China Mobile Ltd. but it is also keen on beefing up its devices business.

"We hope to sell our smartphone to these operators next year," Dale Ying, ZTE's managing director of handset business marketing, told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview on the sidelines of the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress in Hong Kong.

"We see big potential in the smartphone market. We are targeting to ship more smartphones in the coming few years which will help to improve our gross margin."

The company currently makes handsets for U.K.-based Vodafone, Spain's Telefonica SA, and China Mobile.

Ying also said ZTE is in discussions and conducting testing with operators in North America comprising Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA, AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp., and Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc., to sell handsets and mobile broadband data cards.

He said ZTE targets shipping a combined 60 million handsets and mobile broadband data cards this year, up from 45 million units in 2008.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sharp Corp. will offer mobile phones in Japan that run on Google Inc.'s Android operating system as early as the first half of next year, according to a company executive cited in a report Wednesday.

Nikkei reported that Sharp executive Masami Ohbatake made the announcement -- though he did not specify which carriers will offer the phones.

However, the report said, market leader NTT DoCoMo Inc. "is expected to be first in line."

DoCoMo currently offers a Google-based phone made by Taiwan's HTC Corp.
