Marc Weeklies: Thoughts of a Happy Celtic Christmas... With A New CD

I've had Christmas songs stuck in my head all morning. I know it seems way to early to be thinking about Christmas, but running my own music business I tend to think ahead. That's why I'm in the planning stages for my Celtic Christmas Podcast (coming soon). I was even practicing my "Celtic Christmas Elf Conscription Song" with the thought of recording a full version to release as a single. Not sure I am quite ready to record again, but the thought is there. I guess it's the feeling that the year is winding down that mekes me think of Christmas and what is next...

I guess that will be my next CD, "The Bridge". I made the album available for pre-sale last week, and it features one of my current favorite songs to sing, "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". The song has racked up over a thousand highly-rated views on YouTube and is just a blast to sing.

The whole album, in fact, is fun and has a sort of beautiful, elegance to it. Rich Brotherton's ability to produce CDs is just amazing. And the songs... Ah! Some of my absolute favorites to sing and play.

Thinking way to far ahead with Christmas has its advantages. Because you can now pre-order "The Bridge" for your Christmas present to yourself or to a friend. Stay tuned. I'll have songs to listen to in the weeks ahead. So keep an ear open for those.

Marc Weeklies: Band Naming Contest and the Vampire Ball

Wow! The Vampire Ball was amazing fun. And it occurred to me that I didn't tell you enough about it. For instance, did you know I created a band for the ball? Yup. Samantha Gillogly came down from Boston to play fiddle with the group. And one of my best friends, Jamie Haeuser, rocked the night out on the bodhran and backup vocals. Considering we had no rehearsal time with Samantha, I was blown away by just how great it all sounded. I heard quite a few compliments for the show too.

Over the weekend, the three of us jammed some more and there was a beautiful connection such that by Sunday we were asking ourselves what we were gonna call the band.

So yesterday, I was listening to the CD Baby DIY Podcast and got the idea to do a Band Naming Contest. Here's how it works. Every day this week, starting today, I want to hear your favorite band names for a Celtic band. At the end of the day, I will pick my favorite band name and that person will receive a free download of one of my albums. It'll last about a week. So start naming the band!

Marc Weeklies: Review Happy Songs of Death on iTunes

I just got back from MileHiCon in Denver, Colorado where I was the Musical Guest of Honor. How cool is that! Everyone up there was so warm and welcoming despite the wee bit o'snow that fluttered down to my heart's delight. The shows went well and the other guests were a total delight. MileHiCon is the largest Science Fiction Literary Convention and well worth a visit. Pre-register now!

I'm heading to rehearsal in a moment. The Vampire Ball is just two days away. And I still have a bunch of prep to do. I can't wait for the show. This is gonna be one hell of an event!

Marc Weeklies: Bridging the Gap With Monet

I'd like to start by thanking everyone who sent me photos of bridges over the last few days. I felt stumped as to what sort of album cover I wanted for my next cd, entitled "The Bridge". Your pics helped me decide.

I had a loose image in my mind of a foot bridge over water filled with plants and flowers. So this weekend I decided to pull out some acryllic paints and make some unique album covers with that loose idea in my head. The second cover I painted was it.

The image was a Monet painting I saw back in college of that little pond and footbridge he painted over and over again. That's what my painting was inspired by. It turned out to be such a lovely cover that I am using it for the final album cover.

The dark greens sorta fit the mood, feel, and style of the album which pulls together songs from my past and present, folk and jazz, traditional and original, ballady and fun. Recorded with Celtic producer Rich Brotherton, it has an elegant sound with stunning background instrumentation by him as well as backing vocals and drum by Jamie Haeuser, fiddle by Samantha Gillogly, and flute by Bethany McLyr.

I hope to mail the album off to printers next week. Once that happens, I will open it up for pre-orders. In the meantime, here's the song I wrote in March that made me want to record this CD in the first place.

Marc Weeklies: Texas and Denver, Vampires and Wine Tastings, Grammies and Goddesses

Salut, tous (that's hi, everybody in French), c'est Jamie, reporting on a great opening weekend at the Texas Renaissance Festival (TRF), upcoming gigs for Marc, and plans for next year!

Marc and I played four shows at TRF, plus the wonderful Pub Sing - great crowds opening day, even with so-so weather. As usual, the cast was stellar, and got to see lots of good friends like Owain Phyfe and Cantiga, the Bard O'Neil, Cristophe the Insulter, the gorgeous Queen Margaret of Scotland, the Bilge Pumps and others. And special thanks to the Lady McArthur who hostess-ed us there. Just beaucoup fun.

Marc's next up at MileHiCon in Denver October 23-25, so get ready for a kitty kilt filk invasion (try saying that real fast three times). "Happy Songs of Death" will accompany him, of course. Plays nice at high altitudes!

And we are happy to announce that Marc will appear March 12-14 at MidSouthCon in Memphis as the Media Guest of Honor. He'll being doing three shows there and participating in other events.

Marc Weeklies: Swing the Peppers of Happiness

Greetings und salutations!

Ireland, England, and now back home. Yes, I had a great time on the 2nd Celtic Invasion Vacation. Dingle, Ireland is marvelous little town. We had a great time there, hikes around the peninsula, boating to Blaskett Island and seeing seals and dolphins. We enjoyed another perfect weather vacation with cool air and virtually no rain. We drank in the local pub. I played music and jammed with some locals... *sigh*

Now I'm back in the swing, getting a ton of work done at home. And I have a few shows coming up. It all starts this weekend. I'll be a roaming entertainer at the Texas Renaissance Festival. So look for me. But if you want a more specific place to look, I will play two street shows outside or near Mrs. McArthur's Pepper booth at 11:30am and 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. That's booth #503 in Plantersville, Texas. I'll have a bunch of CDs, including Happy Songs of Death. So come on by and say hello.

A couple weeks after that, I fly to Denver where I'm the Musical Guest of Honor for MileHiCon. I don't remember the exact show times yet, but I seem to recall I have a big Friday show with Odd Austin, a local comedy musician. Then the week after that is the "Blood and Gold" Vampire Ball back here in New Orleans where again, I will highlight Happy Songs of Death.

Next month is the big month too. I'm back for a full fun of the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. I have two shows daily, a Celtic Sing-A-Long and a Happy Songs of Death show, sharing the stage with the great Paolo Garbanzo and Robin and Maid Marion. And of course, I will be back for the wine tasting. So make sure you get your wine tasting tickets asap. I think a couple weekends have already sold out and Madame Ghislaine has a brilliant assortment of wines to taste. You won't find a better, more fun wine tasting than at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Not to mention, you can see me!!!! :)

Marc Weeklies: Dragon*Con 2009 Report!

Jamie here...Ach achon ach am toirsech monuar! That's Irish for "Alas, I am so tired, alas!" The first "Alas" is because I - like everyone else who was there - am exhausted and the second because I have to wait another year for Dragon*Con...

Marc utterly triumphed - his first two shows were terrific, but the last one was amazing! The Filk Track Room was standing-room only. Lots of great friends and fans from the past and lots of new ones, too. And his new T-shirt, "Kilted for Her Pleasure," was a sell-out - I think every man in kilt bought one. (Marc's reordering, so you can get yours soon.) The new CD, "Happy Songs of Death," sold very well, as did "What Color is Your Dragon." And the "Happy Songs" fans - by which I mean the kind that cool you off, not you wonderful people - were a big hit in the sultry confines of the Marriott.

Marc got to meet Felicia Day! And NOT at the Walk of Fame! Clever Lisa, who helped Marc at the table, had the good sense to take her a copy of "Happy Songs," and she jumped and squealed and later told me when I was at the Walk of Fame that she could not wait to listen to it.

As usual, Dragon*Con is the only party that can give my hometown event - Mardi Gras - a run for its money in terms of joy and energy and enormous creativity by everyone there. This was the year of Steampunk - or more precisely, alternate history. I wish I had a dollar for every pair of goggles I saw. I costumed up as Mina Murray from "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" for my panel, which turned out to be a blast because a guy who worked on the film showed up and joined the panel - three sheets to the wind but hilarious.

Whew! Now, Marc gets to go off and recover in Ireland on a Celtic Vacation (and be thinking about Scotland next May) while I stay home and finish up the plans for next year. Don't forget that house concerts are my favorite way for folks to enjoy Marc's music! We just booked another one on April 23rd in Nebraska, so this is the chance for any of you fans out in the Colorado/Nebraska area to book Marc now. Marc Weeklies: New Orleans CD Release Party This Friday

Jamie again, people - Marc's busy after a weekend working on the next fabulous project, reuniting with the kitties and taking care of things. But he's letting me write the Weekly today for very personal reasons.

When we scheduled the CD Release Party for "Happy Songs of Death" on August 28, it did not occur to me that it was the eve of the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
But it is. And how appropriate. "Happy Songs of Death" is really all about what this anniversary needs to be.

I'm a New Orleans native. Born here. Lived here most of my life. And as an historian (yes, really) I have a perspective on this anniversary that is SO aligned with the spirit of this CD. Tragedies like Katrina - or the Black Death that led to the Renaissance - creates opportunity through displacement.

Now, I am not minimizing the suffering and tragedy. Just noting that the human spirit - and creativity and joy and love - cannot be crushed under even such a catastrophe. That what we remember are the stories of people doing things they never thought they could do. And that now, in the wake of the tragedy, there is an artistic and creative renaissance happening in New Orleans that is just stunning. New performance spaces, new art districts, new people coming here because they believe in the city and all that it stands for. And "Happy Songs of Death" celebrates that. It is informed by Marc's personal investment and interest in New Orleans, by blues and jazz and deeply felt rhythms of the soul.

So, please do come join us at Bacchanal on Friday for the CD release party for this spectacular new CD. Come celebrate with me the rebirth of my city. Thanks for being part of the energy, the direction, the dream.

Marc Weeklies: Celebrate Happy Songs of Death CD Release Today!

Bonjour, everybody - it's Jamie. Marc's busy making up with the kitties for being gone to GenCon so I get to write you again.

Speaking of GenCon - a blast. Marc had a couple of shows, played all over the place, ran into friends from the filk world like The Great Luke Ski and Tom Smith, sold lots of CD's, and fans LOVED "Happy Songs of Death."

Next up - the CD Release Party for "Happy Songs" on Friday, August 28 at 7 PM at Bacchanal Wines and Spirits here in New Orleans. It's a great location, and proprietor Chris Drudge is coming up with a special signature drink (not involving arsenic, I am told). Best of all, it's a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, a great community resource that is keeping musicians healthy and leading the fight for non-smoking venues. So - all kinds of good reasons to come on out - Marc will perform, and I would love to see you there.

Already looking forward to Dragon*Con! Marc has a bunch of shows and events. And I will be there, so come find me to tell me where you would like Marc to perform next year as I am busily booking 2010. And don't forget my favorite two words: "House Concert." Marc Weeklies: Memories of Johnny Cash

Funny. Just yesterday, I was telling the folks on my newsletter how I was happy to be home. Now I'm excited because I'm flying up to GenCon tomorrow. Reminds me something I heard about Johnny Cash in the movie Walk the Line. Whenever he was out on the road, he would get tired of it. Whenever he was home, he couldn't wait to get out on the road. I heard the same about Bob Dylan.

Maybe once I get a wee bit more settled I'll relax and enjoy my home a bit more. When I moved to New Orleans, I planned it as a temporary move. So I didn't bring good furniture to relax in. Just office stuff, recording gear, eating utensils and a place to sleep. Now I need to go home and get something more comfortable so my downtime at home is much more relaxing. Then I'll have a better place to sit for Torre to climb into my lap and relax as well. Gotta think of the cats.

Promotion for Happy Songs of Death is going along great. I now have BOTH CD covers and have mailed out the last of the pre-orders today. So look to your mail if that's you. The rest of you, I hope will pick up your copy on Thursday, August 20th, when I hope to officially release the CDs on CD Baby.

There are a couple more edits to be done on my music video too. I'm patiently waiting to share that with you. I'm SO happy with the video. And I must admit, I want MORE music videos for this CD. There are so many visuals I can imagine for all these songs. Hey! So if you know anything about making setting video to music, have at it! I'd love to see what you come up with.

Finally, I am booked for MileHiCon in Denver in October. We're looking for a couple extra venues in Colorado that I might be able to perform at. If you have any thoughts, email Jamie at booking@marcgunn.com.

Party, Tour and Book!

Bonjour, all - Jamie again, just back from NYC where I caught one of Marc's shows. He's busy at another gig so here I am again. BUT WAIT!

Before I do anything else, mark your calendars - CD Release Party for "Happy Songs of Death" on Friday, August 28 - 7 PM at Bacchanal Wine Bar - 600 Poland Avenue in the Bywater area of New Orleans. Going to be a WAY fun time, and a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, with donations at the door in lieu of cover and Marc is donating $5 for every CD sold. So come on out, be the first to hear music from the new CD - free parking, casual, and I'm working with the great folks at Bacchanal on a signature drink special.

Well, NYC was a kick. Marc ended up the tour with a show at An Beal Bocht in the Bronx and the one I got to attend at the Ceol Pub in Brooklyn. Thanks to the effervescent Bonnie and friends from Long Island, representing the ICon contingent, some other fans and long-lost friends of Marc. Just a great show - even with the water balloon sent careening through the front door. Thanks to our friend who took it so well in stride! And thanks to Loretta at Ceol for the warm welcome.

LOVED that neighborhood - Smith Street - in Brooklyn - enjoyed a couple of cocktails just down the street at the Clover Club where champion bartender Brad mixed up some cool things. Clover Club was recently named "Best New Bar in the World" by the New Orleans-based group "Tales of the Cocktail" and I can see why.

And speaking of New York - my favorite ex-New Yorker, Marc's friend Marrus' new book, "Lightsurfing: Living Life in the Front of My Mouth" is now available on her website, www.Marrusart.com. Check out this irreverant picaresque tale that explores one dynamic personality who makes life, art and perspective work.

And remember the historical reference on this week's "Song of the Week:" Napoleonic Wars. Irish soldiers in the British army. Can't you just see Marc Gunn slogging along in Spanish mud in high boots, singing his heart away?

Marc Weeklies: House Concert Call Out

Hey - Jamie here - Marc's up north somewhere, which considering I live in New Orleans, allows for a lot of options. BUT we rendezvous this weekend for his debut in New York City. THAT'S RIGHT! NEW YORK! So check the show listings for his two shows there.

And those of you in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area, Marc has a show coming up this Thursday at the Market Street Public House in Denton, MD. It's at 7:30 pm, so no excuses on a work night!

I am booking Marc for 2010 now, and there are lots of opportunities to see him live, but I want to urge you to consider a house concert. Just this past weekend, the Fogels of Reston, VA hosted their first one featuring Mr. Gunn, and report that it was a blast and they'll be doing more in the future. Check out the article about house concerts on the website. I will also provide promotional support - things like posters and calendar listings - and if your house isn't big enough, think about a church basement, community center or other alternative. These events REALLY are the best way to enjoy Marc and his music in an intimate and comfortable setting.

Also would love to start playing some colleges, so let me know if you have any ideas on that account.

Starting to crank the publicity machine for "Happy Songs of Death," and would love to hear suggestions from you all about reviewers I can send the CD to, or radio stations and shows that you think would like to play this great new CD. Just email me at booking@marcgunn.com.

Maybe it was my love of the Kingston Trio singing "Tom Dooley" as a child, or maybe it was totally inspired by watching Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, but when the desire to write a murder ballad overtook me, I ran with it. The song that erupted from my autoharp ended in murder. It also sparked a desire to release an album of lots of fun and happy songs of death. The new CD is out in August 2009!

Marc's on tour, so Jamie's back!

And thinking about patterns and parallels between "Happy Songs of Death" and Frank McCourt. For those of you who have not heard, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Angela's Ashes" died yesterday at the age of 78.

I think he would have loved "Happy Songs."

McCourt was never maudlin or self-pitying about his horrific childhood. He saw the comic in the tragic, and light in the dark, the joy in the despair that is life and death. He would have listened to "Won't You Come With Me" and laughed in all the right places.

By the way - as wonderful as the book was - and I have read and re-read it often - even better is the audio book with McCourt reading his own prose with a Limerick accent that 50 years in America never diluted.

Frank McCourt also introduced me to an Ireland that was real and gritty and poor - not the over-romanticized, leprechaun-infested Hollywood version. it was an Ireland I could explore from a much firmer foundation. Still beautiful, still mystical, but real.

(And don't forget you can still go with Marc on the upcoming Celtic Invasion of the gorgeous Dingle peninsula - but not much time left - and the airfares are amazing right now.)

So, raise a glass with me in saluting Frank McCourt of Limerick and New York, and thanking him for sharing an amazing journey with us. Slainte, Frank!

Marc Weeklies: Questions and Answers Unveiled

Greetings amici!

This past weekend, my amazing agent and idea goddess, Jamie, and I sat down to plan next year. I can't begin to tell you how cool it is to plan out next year. Where I am gonna be? What am I gonna do? Those are not easy questions to answer a year in advance, but they are SO necessary if you really want to do more than just stumble around blindly.

However, I'm not yet ready to reveal all. After all, we still have a lot of shows to book. And first things first--Happy Songs of Death!

As you've heard, the new CD is done. In fact, I had one of the album covers (Ingrid Houwers' cover) mailed to some friends in Georgia. They tell me it arrived today. Thursday I drive to Georgia. I can't wait to see the album! But this means it will be with me on the tour. That also means I will start mailing out copies of the CD when I hit Maryland.

Meanwhile, I sent Nikki O'Shea's CD cover a few days ago. So it might take a little bit longer to get to you. But I'm gonna do my best to expedite the process.

In addition to planning on how I can get the word out for the new CD, I also made some tentative plans for FOUR, count 'em FOUR Celtic Invasion Vacations next year. Including one in early January right here in New Orleans. Yes, the first U.S.-based Celtic Invasion. All the details will be coming soon, but it's the same weekend I'll be performing with Jed Marum. You're in for one helluva show!

I'm sure there's a ton other things I've forgotten. It was a hugely productive weekend though. We talked about promoting shows at GenCon and DragonCon (HELP!?) and Anne Rice Vampire Ball and lots of Sic Fi Conventions and Celtic Festivals, touring and so much more. So much so that's almost overwhelming. If I didn't have a Jamie and you helping me out, I'd be in sorry shape. Soooo... *sigh* thank you!

This may be the most wacky by-production of the busy Jane Austen fan-ficiton industry-at least amoung the spin-offs and pastiches that have made it into print. IN what's described as an "expanded edition" of Pride and Prejudice, 85 percent of the original text has been perserved but fused with "ultraviolent zombie mayhem." - Amazon Review
