If they had known then what they soon learned, it is very doubtful that the garden would have been made! The site was cold and windy, the top of the hill was covered in gravel and the soil on the slopes comprised a sticky clay with a pH of around neutral.

For centuries Hyde Hall had been a working farm and the area around the house was a dumping ground for all kinds of rubbish. Mrs Robinson started to garden as a reaction against this and as she cleared areas around the house they were planted with anything available. In this way she created herbaceous borders and a vegetable garden close to the house, and established the framework of the garden with some 60 young trees bought at an auction sale in Wickford Market.

The house, which dates back to the 18th century, is a typical Essex farmhouse of timber frame, lath and plaster. Records show the existence of a dwelling on this site at least as far back as Tudor times. At the back of the house Mrs Robinson discovered the Tudor brick floor of an old stable under a pile of old household rubbish and soil. This was excavated to become a natural pavement garden.

Cleaning the land around the house was arduous and time-consuming work but, with some assistance from the pigs, the refuse, brambles and scrub were eventually removed and the sticky, clay soil improved with quantities of animal manure and mushroom and bark compost.

Since the Robinsons turned the first spadeful of clay in the 1950s, Hyde Hall has always been a dynamic garden, constantly changing to meet the various challenges the site and soil have produced. The story of the development of this inspiring garden with its extraordinary diversity of plants is a fascinating one, a triumph over conditions that would have daunted less keen and dedicated gardeners.

Hyde Hall garden Essex

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-49025716717358897322009-07-03T01:25:00.000-07:002009-07-03T01:25:01.240-07:00Hyde Hall garden in Essex

Hyde Hall is in an area of Essex that has very low rainfall, and this factor combined with the soil conditions and exposed nature of the site makes it a challenging area to garden in.

A visit will show that by choosing the right plants for the right places and by working with the prevailing conditions, it is possible to create a garden of beauty
Hyde Hall garden Essex

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-67460334529152983472009-07-01T02:15:00.000-07:002009-07-01T02:15:02.823-07:00Harlow Carr in Yorkshire landscape

Harlow Carr is a garden dominated by water, stone and woodland and is very much part of the surrounding Yorkshire landscape

Harlow Carr seeks to push the boundaries of design and planting styles, creating displays that are beautiful but on occasion, also provocative. The complex has the appearance of a glass city set in an undulating landscape. The monumental pavilions, glass cupolas, wide arcades that cross the site like covered streets, are much more than an anecdote on the architectural applications of iron and glass or on little greenhouses of exotic plants. What the Royal Greenhouses express concerns architecture and, specifically, a major construction programme: the "Ideal Glass Palace".

They are the culmination of various meetings, letters, sketches and plans exchanged between architect Alphonse Balat and King Leopold II. But above all, they are a reminder that they inspired the new Belgian architecture of the day, and their influence spread, with Art Nouveau, throughout the world.

The present-day plant collection at the Greenhouses in Laeken is valuable from three viewpoints. First of all, some of the plants belonging to Leopold II's original collections still exist. Furthermore, the current collections still respect the spirit that prevailed when the original collections were planted. Finally, the Royal Greenhouses still contain an enormous number of rare and valuable plants.

Each year, in the spring, the Greenhouses of Laeken are opened to the public, during almost three weeks. This tradition has been carried on for a century.

BIBLIOGRAPHY :

Les Serres Royales de Laeken. They were built entirely of metal and glass, which was a spectacular innovation at the time. The greenhouses house a sizeable collection of plants and flowers, particularly exotic ones, including a very important collection of camellias. Each year in the spring, the greenhouses are opened to the general public, which demonstrates the desire of the current Sovereigns to share their love of plants and flowers with everyone.

The Pier

Built in 1886-1887, the Pier Greenhouse was intended to receive guests when the King was holding court in the Winter Garden or the Dining Room Greenhouse.

The staircase leads to the Winter Garden. At the ends of the Pier are two statues by Charles Van der Stappen, Dawn and Evening. Medinillas (a tropical plant from the Philippines) are laid out in Chinese vases brought back by King Leopold II from a trip to the Far East while he was still Duke of Brabant.

The Winter Garden
Designed by architect Alphonse Balat and built between 1874 and 1876, the Winter Garden was the first greenhouse in the imposing city of glass which would be built over thirty years on the Laeken estate.

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-20057628376443303732009-06-17T12:41:00.000-07:002009-06-17T12:44:24.547-07:00“Kleingarten" Jardines en Alemania<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 269px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_82kHdxzHsq4/SjlHjbati5I/AAAAAAAABXo/NsEbgnUIvFs/s400/kleingarten.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348384706459962258" />

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-88050033793602430702009-06-06T00:22:00.000-07:002009-06-06T00:22:00.967-07:00New Flower in Chelsea Flower Show 2009

Rose Grosvenor House
An elegant yellow rose with high-gloss foliage named 'Grosvenor House' in celebration of the hotel's 80th birthday. The NAFAS (F18) group from Wessex and Jersey celebrate the association's 50th birthday with a floral display that's so large it's had to be constructed in an aircraft hanger. Entitled ''Inside Out, Outside In'', the pastel palette of cream, lemon, apricot, pink and lilac is brought to life by some lively dashes of regal purple and lime green. Don't miss Floral Design on Rock Garden Bank.

The Brazilian-born, floral artist from Kew, Zita Elze (G23), also uses British-grown flowers in her first Chelsea exhibit, ''Celebration of Life''. Her textured tapestry of fruit, foliage and flower is an ethereal, uplifting mixture of blush-white blooms with a sombre chink of dark flowers symbolising mortality.

It's 40 years since rosarian David Austin (David Austin Roses, C22) launched his repeat-flowering and fragrant English Roses as an antidote to the hordes of stiffly formal hybrid teas. There are now more than 200 scented varieties and 75 of the best are in a recreation of The Canal Garden, part of the company's Albrighton rose garden.

Southfield Nurseries (E2), winner of 23 consecutive Gold medals for its cacti, vies for its 24th with a wide-ranging display. It will feature prickly echinopsis, commonly called sea urchin cacti, and rebutia. Both are rounded and produce large, vivid flowers in flushes throughout the summer. Southfields raises and names hybrids of both.

Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants (F13) celebrates a 21st birthday this year and Rosy Hardy, the queen of the cottage garden, is pulling out the stops with a larger exhibit. The centrepiece metal sculpture, designed by New Forest blacksmith Colin Phillips, resembles vertical shards of ice and the soft planting will reflect the right plant, right place message. The upright allium 'Purple Sensation' emerges through the broad silvery leaves of Artemisia ludoviciana 'Valerie Finnis' in the sunny, dry section and the deep sapphire-blue Anchusa azurea 'Loddon Royalist' also shines. Rosy's expertise is sure to win her another Gold.

Andy McIndoe is the innovative designer behind Hillier Nurseries' (D15) ''Seven Ages of Man'' garden. The journey begins with a ''first base'' starter garden, goes on to a child-friendly ''surviving suburbia'' scenario all the way to a low-maintenance option called ''pushing up the daisies''. Andy is hoping to secure a record-breaking 64th consecutive Gold for Hilliers. The other old-stagers, Blackmore and Langdon (D2) display delphiniums and begonias to the usual standard of excellence.

The family-run Bloms Bulbs (D21) has been famous for bowls of tulips since 1948 and their 58 Gold medals speaks volumes. They stage 15,000 blooms and rely on visitor feedback to complete their new catalogue every year.

A range of unusual bulbs and woodlanders can be found on Jacques Amand (D8) and they include weird and wonderful arisaemas with ear-trumpet flowers in sombre colours. Close-by a pink Asian lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium formosanum) can be seen close to Lilium nepalense, a sophisticated lime-green Turk's cap with red-russet shading. More traditional bulb displays can be found at Avon Bulbs (F12) and Broadleigh Gardens (E6).

The Cornish contingent includes Burncoose Nursery (B7), part of Caerhays Castle, a garden famous for its acid-loving magnolias and rhododendrons. This year they team up with Tresco Abbey Gardens from the Isles of Scilly to celebrate the plant hunters who collected these treasures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Knoll Gardens (D5), the country's leading grass nursery, is considering climate change and this year launched the Knoll Gardens Foundation to develop a practical gardening ethos that's in tune with the environment. Knoll feature lots of native grasses, including several forms of quaking grass (Briza media). Jekka's Herb Farm (F16) is also going native with a display of powerful medicinal plants that include dandelions and nettles.

Green Garden Herbs (C13) from Yorkshire has a more traditional display. The eye-catching British-grown fruit, flower and vegetables staged by UK Horticulture (E15) must never be missed. Staged by ex-nurserywoman Penny Riley and her team, this large display deservedly won the President's Award in 2007.

Jersey Farmers' Union (C28) embarks on its first Chelsea with a Channel Island selection of edible produce and W Robinson (D12) traces heritage varieties of vegetable.

The boys at Pennard Plants (C25) have an interesting edible display that shows three eras of vegetable gardening over the past 100 years.

Gateshead Council (F10) wants you to provide the energy to recycle the water in its Window of Opportunity garden.

But it's the family-run nurseries that make Chelsea so special and there are frilly sweet peas from Eagle Sweet Peas (B17), fuchsias from Roualeyn (C29) and Potash (B1) and aromatic lavenders of every type from Downderry (E13) and Isle of Wight Lavender (D10).

Also look out for Chelsea newcomers Victorian Violas (G19) and its collection of hardy perennial violas and pansies assembled over the last 45 years.

Plant Heritage collection holders Tynings Climbers (G7) display their passion flowers. The Old Walled Garden (G26) have Australian bottle brushes (callistemon) and Chelsea veterans Brian and Pearl Sulman (G1) use 60 miniature, dwarf, stellar, angel and regal pelargoniums. Their Mildenhall nursery has an open weekend on May 30-31.

Tropical splendour reigns on several stands. The Big Plant Company (E18) shows off its homebred miniature ginkgoes and tree ferns. Palms with attitude sway and shimmy on Ainsworth Displays (G8) and Fleur de Lys (C10) has a softer mix that includes begonias and streptocarpus.

Great Pavilion floral Chelsea Flower show

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-17299067256603887802009-06-01T00:59:00.000-07:002009-06-01T00:59:00.180-07:00Queen to be presented with new rose at Kew Gardens The white Kew Gardens rose has been specially bred for the occasion

On Tuesday, the Queen's support for the gardens will be recognised when she is presented with a thornless rose – called simply the Kew Gardens – which has been specially bred for the occasion.

The variety is a white-flowered English musk hybrid, and one of the few to be entirely without thorns.

When the Queen visits Kew, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, she will also cut a cake designed in the shape of the gardens' iconic Palm House, widely regarded as the most important surviving Victorian glass and iron building.

On top of the Palm House, the gardens are also home to more than 40 other listed buildings.

To commemorate the 250th anniversary, a plaque will be unveiled and the Royal couple will plant two trees. The Queen will plant a Ginkgo, an ancient tree known as a "living fossil" which is now native only to a small area of central China.

Prince Philip will plant a Wollemi pine, also known from fossil records. It was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in Australia in 1994 and it is now part of an international conservation programme.

The Royal couple will be welcomed to the world-famous botanic gardens by staff including Stephen Hopper, the director. Kew Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a global leader in scientific research and international conservation.

Mr Hopper said of the visit: "Our 250th year is a unique chance for us to share Kew's remarkable heritage and the important contribution we are making to plant conservation.

"The gardens will be looking spectacular – there has been no better time to visit."

The gardens were started in 1759 by Princess Augusta, the mother of King George III, on a nine-acre site around Kew Palace.

It was during Queen Victoria's reign that the gardens grew in importance and were opened to the public. The arrival of the railway in 1869 made the attraction more accessible.

Since Queen Victoria's death in 1901, a succession of monarchs have greatly valued Kew Gardens. The Queen has visited at least six times: as well as the visits in 1959 and 2006, she came to the gardens in 1969, 1982, 1994 and 2004.

Queen Elizabeth II has also taken a keen interest in the development of Kew Gardens. The Queen's Garden is a seventeenth-century-style garden situated behind Kew Palace.

At one time, the site was not cultivated because the area was regularly flooded by the River Thames.

However, in 1959, Sir George Taylor, then the director of Kew, decided to create a garden whose style matched that of the palace. Work began in 1963 and, in 1969, the garden was officially opened by the Queen.

One royal aide confirmed the Queen's fondness for Kew: "The gardens have a rich history and are very much a part of royal life.

News flowers in Chelsea Flower show 2009

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-61310102114931024032009-05-31T00:53:00.000-07:002009-05-31T00:53:00.112-07:00News flowers in Chelsea Flower show 2009

It's also the perfect time to introduce new plants, and Chris Blom of Bloms Bulbs (D21) is introducing five new tulips. There are three weather-resistant, peony-flowered doubles with strong stems – the rose-pink 'Jumai', the cream-white 'Danceline' and the scarlet-red 'Cosmic Dancer'. Chris also has a green and white viridiflora with exceptionally pointed petals called 'Greenstar'. But the most eye-catching is a lily-flowered, blood-red, 'Typhoon'.

Most of the plants launched at Chelsea, however, capture summer, and new roses abound. David Austin Roses (C22) releases four varieties. 'Kew Gardens' commemorates the 250th anniversary of the botanic garden and the nursery is replanting a rose garden behind the Palm House using a design mapped out in 1848. The apricot buds of 'Kew Gardens' open to form five-petalled cream flowers. 'Tam o' Shanter', a cerise shrub rose, celebrates another 250th anniversary – that of the birth of the poet Robbie Burns while the 'Lady of Shalott', a copper-pink chalice-shaped rose, recognises the bicentenary of Tennyson's birth. David Austin's favourite, 'The Wedgwood Rose', is a soft-pink shrub that can also be used as a climber. He describes it as having an "almost gossamer-like quality with a lovely fruity fragrance on the outer petals and a clove-like scent at the centre". This rose celebrates Wedgwood's 250th birthday. Charles Darwin was Josiah Wedgwood's grandson and this year is the bicentenary of his birth as well.

Peter Beales Roses (E10) launches an elegant yellow rose with high-gloss foliage named 'Grosvenor House' in celebration of the hotel's 80th birthday. Bred by the late Colin Horner, it will be widely planted in Hyde Park.

Harkness Roses (D9) shows eight new varieties, and two merit special attention. One, a compact crimson-red floribunda, was selected by the scientist Sir Robert Winston at the nursery some years ago. Named 'Robert Winston', it will benefit his chosen charity, Women for Women, an organisation that helps war-torn women and young children recover and rebuild.

'The Girlguiding UK Centenary Rose' has clusters of almost-single, red-purple flowers, each with a smart white centre. The guiding charity will accrue 20 per cent from each sale.

Raymond Evison (F14) of Guernsey Clematis has two compact and floriferous clematis. 'Ooh La La' has ruffled, raspberry-pink flowers with contrasting purple striping; the equally flower-packed 'Fleuri' has deep-purple flowers with indigo overtones.

Hillier has a new 'chameleon' heuchera bred in France called 'Tiramisu'. In spring the chartreuse-green foliage is striking, but as summer fades the foliage takes on a chocolate hue before turning to frosted verdigris in winter when the veining is most prominent. Hillier also has new cordylines, 'Sunrise' and Southern Splendour'.

Cayeux Iris (C11) has 100 years' experience of growing and breeding irises at its 55-acre nursery. It exhibits three of its nine new irises. 'Bel Avenir' has pale-lemon standards and soft violet-blue falls; 'Nuit de Noces' is a purple-pink iris with striking orange beards and there is also a nautical navy-blue and pure-white bicolour called 'Coeur d'Or'.

Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants (G19) has another sun lover Scabiosa africana 'Jocelyn' and this large-flowered scabious is a clear-pink rather than a wishy-washy lilac.

Sarah Conibear's lupins are a Chelsea favourite on Westcountry Nurseries (G27) and this year she introduces 'Thunder', a moody purple with a yellow fleck.

Broadleigh Bulbs (E6) is offering a Pacific Coast iris or Californian iris called 'Broadleigh Fenella', a two-tone purple and cream. These quieter irises flower well in shade in May and they can produce hundreds of flowers over six weeks so are extremely useful in the garden. I can see the muted 'Broadleigh Fenella' mingling well with the hardy, scented viola 'Abigail', a new yellow and purple viola bred by Victorian Violas (G19) and there is a new two-tone pink called 'Nellie'.

Eagle Sweet Peas (B17) has three new varieties, including the cream picotee 'Keira Madeline' and the salmon-orange 'Leominster Boy'. But one of its new varieties, an orange-striped sweet pea, has been christened 'Geoff Hughes' after the actor who portrayed Onslow in Keeping up Appearances.

The affable presenter of Bargain Hunt, Tim Wonnacott, also has a suitably sunny new chrysanthemum named for him by Chrysanthemums Direct (C27).

Bowden Hostas (G4) from Devon introduces 'War Paint' a green hosta with a jaunty splash of yellow and The Big Plant Nursery (E18) shows a miniature ginkgo called 'Pixie'. It looks more like a bonsai specimen so would be suitable for the smallest garden – whether there are pixies at the bottom or not.

News flowers in Chelsea Flower show 2009

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-9364972622371665532009-05-30T00:50:00.000-07:002009-05-30T00:50:00.708-07:00Chelsea Flower Show 2009: gardening equipment

Productive gardener
For anyone keen to grown their own, we've found four great raised bed kits (see top of page). Then head for Burgon & Ball (EA70), which has a new seed and plant spacing rule (£18) and a dibblet marked with 1cm (1/3in) depth graduations (£5), both made of beech. It also sells old-fashioned brown paper packets (£4) for collecting seeds and tins to store them (£19). Equally nostalgic are the plant labels from The New Eden (EA73), six for £17, each bearing a veg portrait.

Harrod Horticultural (PW39) has just designed, with the RHS, an "idiot-proof" wire growing system for fruit trees. A 16½ft starter run of metal posts and high-strength steel cable costs £189.95.

Spear & Jackson (EA82) have a solution for gardening clutter: new secateurs with interchangeable heads – anvil, bypass and flower pruner blades, and snips. The first pair costs £22.99, and each extra head £9.49. The handle swaps for a knife (£4.99) and sharpener (£3.99). Composting may be chic, but it can be smelly – unless you use the compact Porch ComposTumbler from Globe Organic Services (RHW22). Bung in your kitchen waste, give the sealed drum a turn, and you'll have plant food in no time. It usually costs £161 but Telegraph readers can get £10 off any Globe product ordered online during the show; enter the code CHPCT.

If the summer is as glorious as predicted, we might need shade. The Coro pergola is sleekly Italian, in marine-grade steel and acrylic. It stands 8ft high and 4¼yd square, and costs £8,970 plus £1,380 for blinds, from Encompass Furniture & Accessories (SR27).

Nick Hornby-type fathers will appreciate the inspiration behind Chris Eckersley's Byrdhouses – the TV set used when the Byrds sang Mr Tambourine Man in 1965. The powder-coated steel houses come in several groovy colours, £325. Visit Design Nation (CW4), a not-for-profit promoter of British designers.

This year, Toby Clayton of Hot Metal Engineering (SR35) is sharing a stand with Sarah Eberle, whose 2007 garden won Best in Show, to exhibit his limited-edition accessories. His oxidised steel firebox (£420) is gritty and sculptural.

The new personalised bistro set from Gap Garden Products (WA3) has words cut out of the metal chair-backs and table top. You can have anything you like – names or a quote. A table and two chairs costs £249.

Cottage gardener
Recycled-steel obelisks from Gardenscape Constructions & Trellisworks (RS6) are a novel way of supporting climbers. At the top is a metal decorative cage, which doubles as a bird feeder (£119.30 to £225).

Antique stone troughs are hard to find. Collector Rachel Adams of Original Stone Troughs (RHW6) scours the country for them. Prices range from £300 to £2,000-plus.

Will Wilson is a young Aussie sculptor, but he knows how to appeal to the English gardener, making bronze bird-baths with blue tits, blackbirds or robins on the rim. He says they also work well as beer coolers for parties. Prices depend on the size – from 1ft to 4ft across – and birds. Head for Willie Wildlife Sculptures (RM22).

Cotswold master blacksmith Michael Jacques (SR28) makes an airy, see-through rocking bench that adds to a pretty garden view. From £3,000.

Frances Hilary (SR6) designs top-notch kit. This year, you'll find durable cotton half-aprons (£25), aprons (£30) and hats (£28.50) printed with roses.

Hunter Boot (EA85) has gone all flowery too, using five botanical prints from the RHS archive on its wellies. The clog (£35), says the firm, is "the new back-door essential".

Stately gardener
A baronial backdrop isn't essential to show off sculptor Hamish Mackie's (RM35) bronzes – but it helps. The stag looking back over its shoulder is made to be the focal point of a long vista. Mackie's passion is Africa, hence the bronzes of cheetahs and leopards. Prices from £1,900 to £48,000.

Tregothnan (MW3), the Cornish estate famous for its tea plantation and honey, is exhibiting an elegant beehive designed by Chelsea medallist Robert Myers. Modelled on a Victorian mansion, it is also high-tech to help the bees fight off the deadly varroa mite and colony collapse disorder. A hive with bees costs £6,780.

Big gardens need big pots and South African Yogi de Beer of Longkloof Pottery (RS13) produces glazed wine jars and Ali Baba shapes from 25in up to 5ft tall (£1,000 to £7,000).

To show off your plants, head for Marston & Langinger (MA12), which is selling contemporary timber staging (£685) – you pick the colour.

Barlow Tyrie's (SR18) Mercury serving table is ideal for entertaining. Made of teak and marine-grade steel, with a ceramic top, this trolley is marvellously chic at £1,650.

Chelsea Flower Show 2009: gardening equipment

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-79689092939361079692009-05-29T00:47:00.000-07:002009-05-29T00:47:00.514-07:00Chelsea Flower Show 2009
Sarah Eberle’s three Credit Crunch Gardens included a neat way of making intriguing paving. The colourful paving was made using salvaged metal grilles. These were laid on hardcore and the 1cm-square spaces within the grille filled with different-coloured gravels. By using a contrasting palette of six different, but fairly muted, gravels, Sarah and her contractor Peter Dowle created an array of different mosaics. These showed London landmarks such as the London Eye and Tower Bridge. But the idea could work in any garden, say for an outdoor eating area, and would not only be fun to construct, but also delightfully different. Other metal grilles were stacked up – secured to each other using reclaimed gearing shafts – to form two invitingly generous steps up to the front door.

Kate Gould in her Eco Chic garden had an interesting and effective wall detail. Horizontal, sanded scaffold boards were arranged like shelves against the wall running from top to bottom. These were being used at Chelsea for purely decorative purposes, but by widening the gap you could use them for storage space and still keep up appearances, too.

The Marston and Langinger greenhouse display was packed with simple ideas that whetted my appetite. The veg-stuffed raised beds – made of pine planks, joined together with hidden timber pegs and vertical posts – reminded me of scaled-up wooden vegetable boxes you used to see in greengrocers. The firm’s mammoth standard fig arrived in a huge black plastic planter straight from Crocus’s nursery, and not being able to find a suitable attractive pot, a resourceful helper popped up to Peter Jones, bought a few metres of off-white canvas and neatly sewed a cover for it. A clever trick we could all put to good effect.

On Gardeners’ Question Time we are always being asked for ways of hiding that garden eyesore we all have to use – the washing line. Mark Gregory’s garden for The Children’s Society included this clever umbrella-like line that folds away into a cupboard which is an integral part of the stylish wooden garden room.

Surprisingly for Chelsea, I spied some artificial lawn. LazyLawn (www.lazylawn.co.uk) has been allowed in for the first time and I can see it neatly covering a few awkward places in gardens. It’s a million miles away from that artificial grass you’ll see at your greengrocer’s, and it did convince me. On the firm’s stand they demonstrated its flexibility by furnishing the walls with it too (some funky grass seats perhaps?) It is laid on 50mm (2in) of fine gravel, is guaranteed against fading for 12 years and costs £55 per square metre. It is super soft to sit on and low friction, which means unsuccessful handstands aren’t too painful. LazyLawn is often laid with a mowing margin to complete the ''natural’’ look. It drains and might need the occasional brush, but in awkward spaces where maintenance, shade, weight (roof gardens) or watering are a problem, this could well be the answer.

A huge basket of wooden apples and pears in various sizes caught my eye: they would make neat finials to punctuate a trellis in a potager perhaps? Emily Readett-Bayley’s stand (www.poshgraffiti.com) also had letters in different finishes – gold, silver, wood and others – which would be perfect for a tree-house or garden hideaway.

Barbecues and all the paraphernalia around them are becoming garden essentials. For the man who has everything, the Grillslinger holster-type arrangement for the avid barbecuer to elegantly display his tools (two sets of tongs, a knife and flipper) seems like a good, useful present. These were sold by Mode Lifestyle (www.mode.co.uk; 0844 463 8034).

I was also really taken by the black Revolver fire pit, which measures 60cm (2ft) in diameter and 30cm (1ft) high and costs £119. It would provide a cosy focal point on a terrace allowing you to chew the fat into the small hours.

Nature Ascending, an urban garden designed by Angus Thompson and Jane Brockbank, had some very subtle decking. The boards were laid vertically instead of the normal horizontal with gaps between each. Although you could not walk on it in stilettos, this was more than compensated for by the look – far less block-like in appearance than conventionally laid decking. There were plenty of other clever ideas in this garden. Circular bird feeders made from timber discs with wire half-spheres in the centre that were stuffed with bird food were mounted on the walls; a fabulous idea and well worth copying.

The pair had also included modern bird houses that had been equally well thought-out; they were fixed behind a false wall, so all that was visible from the front were circular wooden studs with a mini hole in the centre aimed at attracting sparrows to make their homes inside. These were positioned regularly at three-metre spacings, on advice from the RSPB

Chelsea Flower Show mayo 2009

Jardinerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02166521597123562886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7721358385893260290.post-46904820807290777252009-05-28T06:14:00.001-07:002009-05-28T06:21:57.585-07:00

Girlguiding UK Centenary Rose

Clusters of almost-single, red-purple flowers, each with a smart white centre.
