Recession

Although no one wanted to admit it, a recession may finally be here. Defined as "a significant decline in economic activity", this economy has certainly fit the bill. People often make the mistake of thinking a recession is a contraction of the gross domestic product. Even I thought thats what defined a recession. I wonder what defines a depression.

Either way economists have stated that the economy has surprisingly withstood many negative impacts including high fuel prices, the housing bubble, and a credit crunch. Will it survive another 911 though? Probably not, and we all hope and pray that such an occurrence does not happen again.

I was browsing around on the internet and found the coolest thing ever if you are into non profit work or trade shows of any kind in the corporate or business world. These are trade show display ideas that are custom fit all your needs.

I personally volunteer with a non profit organization in which I often get put in charge of creating a unique setup for a trade show. We have often employed going to a graphic studio print shop with expensive ideas and design costs. But taking a look at these display units makes me think how sharp any non profit or business would look by using them. My first impression is modern, sharp, and hip. Using these very modern display units will grab the attention of all those that may be passing by and provides a unique way to get a campaign message across or to promote that new product line. Whatever the goal may be, the end result is the same...the information gets to the audience in a more catching way.

19k GM workers Take Payout

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that nearly 1 in 4 GM workers are taking a payout package to leave the company. The move is expected to save GM money in the long run. New employees who are willing to work for less money will take some of their places.

This is shocking news! GM has long been a source of good American jobs. Now that Japanese car companies have taken a solid lead in the automobile industry, some restructuring of the Big Three have to take place to stay competitive.

In response to the current economic market, GM is scrapping two designs of its cars and planning for the future. The Energy Act of 2007 demanding that cars attain an average of 35 mph by 2020. That is a 40% increase from GM's current average. This issue coupled with rising fuel costs and a demand for better fuel efficiency from consumers is pushing GM to rethink its previously strongest selling SUV's and trucks. Instead, they will cut shutdown plants and lay even more people off in attempt to keep up with the times.

Things are basically not looking good for this company...but hopefully they can adjust to the market demand and build cars that people want...hybrids.

U.S. Consumer Debt Rises

Consumer credit increased by $15.3 billion for the month to $2.56 trillion, the biggest monthly rise since November, the Federal Reserve said today in Washington. In February, credit rose by $6.5 billion, previously reported as an increase of $5.2 billion. The Fed's report doesn't cover borrowing secured by real estate, such as home-equity loans.

People in the United States are now obviously charging up their credit cards because of the recession. There is less money on hand and it is forcing people to borrow more money than they normally would. With the price of oil over $123 a barrel, the rising costs of energy, and the housing credit crisis, the only hope is that economic stimulus package starts to help out in a meaningful way.

Once people start getting those checks, they may end up using them to pay off their credit cards, which might not help the economy so much.

Oil Prices hit a Record $123 a barrel

Today, Wednesday May 7th, a new record has been set for the price of oil at $123 per barrel.

According to the New York Times, investors and traders are still worried about the increasing demand of oil. If these prices climb any higher, this country could fall apart. Some people say that the weakened US Dollar is to blame.

This ultimately means that the national average of gasoline could hit $3.75 by June. More money at the gas pump means that more media coverage will be dramatically covering the issue. More media attention should convince people to pressure the government into really finding a solution to the problem.

President Bush had already said that he would like to open the National Arctic Refuge in Alaska for drilling. But will the environmentalists let him...I don't think so.

WiMax the Next Wireless Frontier

Sprint and Clearwire have joined forces to establish a WiMax infrastructure. The plan on blanketing the United States with enough transmitters for nearly 140 million Americans by 2010. Essentially, these transmitters are going to pop up as fast as those cell phone transmitters did.

Once it is all established, you will be in a permanent hotspot and will be able to get fast Internet connections from a cellphone or laptop anywhere you go. Certainly Verizon and AT&T would be the big losers in this situation. Sprint and Clearwire also have allies that will help provide nearly $3 billion in funding to get the project started. The project is being tested by Clearwire in Portland, Oregon right now but now has plans to rapidly expand.

Intel and Google are contributing to the projects because of their stake in making money through this new infrastructure. Intel would supply the chips to help spur growth in the industry, and Google will gain a broader hold as the preferred search engine by staking a claim on the WiMax market now.

Yahoo walks away from Microsoft Bid

Apparently Yahoo is too cool for Microsoft. A price was put on the table for Microsoft to buy out Yahoo, but Yahoo walked away from the table because they felt it was worth more than what was offered. Microsoft claimed that Yahoo did not even try to negotiate. Well, there you have it...two giant corporations fighting over dominance in one way or another.

Honestly though, who wants the two companies to merge? They are both annoying and want to try to compete with the likes of Google. But in my opinion, they have no chance. Google's ethics and morality as a company far outweigh that of anything capable from the monopolistic Microsoft.

Sony: Microsoft Wants Blu-Ray Xbox

Apparently, the news is buzzing around with talks about Microsoft being in the works of trying to work out a way for them to get blu-ray technology into their Xbox 360's. In theory, this would allow for Microsoft to better compete with Sony's Playstation which has the obvious advantage with its built in blu-ray technology. However, Microsoft would have to pay for the technology.

It just seems funny to me to see Microsoft initially supporting HD-DVD back when they thought it was going to be the winner of the high definition war. Now that HD-DVD is a failure, they go groveling to Sony for the technology they should have backed in the first place. Funny how.

Apple Iphone to Woo Blackberry Users

In an article out of Bloomberg, Apple's Steve Jobs has announced plans to allow third party software writers to build upon the IPhone platform which was previously blocked by Apple before. The main reason many Blackberry users haven't switched to the Iphone was because of lack of the ability to access corporate email automatically from the phone. Now Steve Jobs has a new goal of selling 10 million I-phones by the end of 2008. So about 4.1 million have been sold so far.

By allowing corporate email such as Microsoft Exchange, to work in the I-phone, the hopes are that many people who hold dear to their Blackberries, might make the switch. Will Steve Jobs hit the goal by the end of year?

Do you ever feel like you should start getting organized around your house or small business? California to Utilize Methane from Dairy Cows

According to Earthtimes.org, PG&E and BioEnergy solutions just came up with the world's first project that will utilize the methane released from dairy cow manure for use into California's Renewable energy portfolio. It's the first of its kind to be implemented from bio gas to pipeline. It works by flushing the manure into a covered lagoon after which the manure decomposes and special scrubbers purify the gas to pipeline standards and get shipped off for use. This initial project will start out at a 5,000 dairy cow farm but has potential to reach California's 2 million cow population.

The system claims to reduce 70 percent of the methane that would have been dispersed into the atmosphere. This form of methane capture saves the planet from additional greenhouse gases, as methane is a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. It also qualifies PG&E for inclusion into their renewable energy portfolio under biomass. California energy regulators have required energy companies to produce 20 percent renewable energy by 2010 which has the energy companies scrambling to comply through either solar, biomass, wind, geothermal, or small hydroelectric. The future of natural gas could come from an entirely renewable source for California.

A similar project in Israel is underway to capture methane for electricity. It appears that the projects finally caught on in the states, turning brown into green.

Next Generation Hybrid Technologies

According to BusinessWeek, General Motors and Daimler are beefing up their automobiles to be real competitors against Japanese auto makers Honda and Toyota who seem to have a firm grip on the hybrid market.

The first of its kind, new hybrid vehicles with lithium ion batteries will be manufactured for the Mercedes-Benz flagship S-class luxury sedan. Lithium ion batteries will transform the hybrid market with longer lasting batteries and better performance than their nickel metal hydride counterparts in current hybrid vehicles.

GM doesn't plan to offer lithium ion hybrids until 2010 with plans to put lithium ion batteries into its Saturn Vue Plug-in, but it does say it plans to use it across a broad range of its models as well including the much anticipated Chevy Volt.

A smart move for The Big Three Auto companies as Toyota has plans to compete by utilizing plug-in hybrids which can add more fuel efficiency and the ability to drive in all electric mode if drivers only drive a short distance everyday.

The Amero Currency

I read this over at the Modesto Bee, and wondered to myself how such a system would be implemented. The Amero is a currency that would encompass a union of currencies the US Dollar, the Canadian Dollar, and the Mexican Peso. Supposedly this is all a part of the North American Union that some conspiracy theorists keep talking about as well as some members of congress. The issue never gets any public media unless it is to try and discredit it.

But I say, bring it on. Our economy is so messed up or soon will be, what harm will a new currency do to our devalued Dollar anyway. Maybe it will help us prevent a recession. I say lets follow the EU model and become a North American Union and introduce a new currency just as the Europeans have. Look at how well the EURO is doing against other world currencies. It's time to look past petty differences between the countries we share borders with and become a regional super power.

Ben Bernanke says More Should be Done to Help Home Owners

According to the New York Times, Ben Bernanke told a group of bankers in Florida that "more can and should be done" to help the millions of people that are facing struggles in these times of the current mortgage crisis. He wants to help those people with mortgages that exceed the value of their homes. His basic point was that he was urging the bankers to forgive portions of loans in order to prevent a broader economic weakening in the country. He apparently avoided saying that there was going to be a government bailout.

Democratic leaders in Congress are pushing for bolder action. The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, will hold a closed meeting on Wednesday with some of the leading advocates for more extensive rescue measures.

Overall, more and more foreclosures are expected to keep rolling through 2008. As more time goes on more pressure will be put onto the government for some sort of bailout. We'll have to wait and see the outcome.

I am sure everyone one of you who drives out there is familiar with the auto insurance industry. No one likes to pay it, but we all have to. Some of the most annoying things about Car Insurance is that if you ever get a speeding ticket or into an accident, then you bill goes up.

In my case, however, I am just one of those young guys at the age 24 waiting to turn the magical age of 25 so my car insurance can go down. I definitely have checked into all the possible discounts I can get for the type of vehicle I have by going into the office. Some people don't realize that they qualify for discounts and should call their insurance companies immediately to ask. This can either save you money right away or they might tell you a way to save by taking a class or installing better safety features of some sort.

I have also been a good driver for the past five years so I get an additional discount for that. All in all, I am pretty happy with my insurance company and I have thought about looking around to see if I could get a better deal.
