Of all the Christian "-ions" (i.e.: redemption, justification, sanctification, glorification, et al) being sanctified seems to be the one that we are in charge of. Sure, we say it's grace at work in us, but don't we usually act like we have to do the reading, praying, and self-control at we associate with being made holy?

So, why is it then that Bible teaches that just as much as Jesus is our wisdom, our righteousness, and our redemption, He is also our personal holiness? No Christian would claim that their life alone would stand as righteous, or that they could redeem themselves through good works. But I sure often think of daily living like the onus is on me.

Several verses earlier, the Christians at Corinth are called "those sanctified in Christ Jesus." His life made them holy, not their daily devotions. It's a great blessing to think, "Jesus is my righteousness. I trust Him." With this new lesson, I'm glad to tell myself, "Jesus is also my good works. His life is mine."

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-85015627074714040872008-11-19T20:50:00.003-06:002008-11-19T20:54:42.308-06:00Be happy; turn off the TV.
Live Science:

Unhappy people glue themselves to the television 30 percent more than happy people.

The finding, announced on Thursday, comes from a survey of nearly 30,000 American adults conducted between 1975 and 2006 as part of the General Social Survey.
In addition, happy individuals were more socially active, attended more religious services, voted more and read a newspaper more often than their less-chipper counterparts.

Read the entire thing.

This reminds me of a friend of mine who decided as a teen to not watch TV. May your empty stomach remind you to pray for mothers with empty arms and hurting souls.

Spend your mealtime praying to God and also thanking Him for giving you the breath of life.

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-71044573751340668282008-11-02T18:56:00.002-06:002008-11-02T19:04:00.687-06:00A Psalm of Life - LongfellowI've been sincerely enjoying poems lately and here's one of the best I've come across.
I suggest reading it aloud.

A PSALM OF LIFE
WHAT THE HEART OF THE YOUNG MAN
SAID TO THE PSALMIST

TELL me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream ! —
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real ! Lewis's great book)
3) after #2, consuming the world's greatest smoothie at Julius Meinl

Regarding The Screwtape Letters: it was certainly the highlight of our weekend. Max McLean played the title character wonderfully. To borrow the old phrase, he really made the book come to life.
In a lot of ways, the play was semon-esque. (Too long to be a homily).
Screwtape's character served as a great reminder of the unseen battle going on in the world. To top it off, the play was also a cutting mockery of the devil.

A few quotes from the playbill:

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.
-C.S. Lewis

The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts
of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot bear Scorn.
-Martin Luther

The devil . . . the prowde spirite . . . cannot endure to be mocked.
-Sir Thomas More

If you're near Chicagoland, it's worth your time and price of admission.

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-67189192564385833522008-10-17T10:14:00.001-05:002008-10-17T14:57:23.996-05:00Are the students ignorant or are you a bad teacher? Many teachers - like myself - are tempted to blame the students when they fail. "Well, he didn't study." "They never do their homework." "I went over this in class."
Sometimes we even put the blame on previous teachers. "What did they teach them last year?!" "I know you learned this in middle school."

One good lesson that I learned from a college professor is this: Usually, teachers are more responsible than they'd like to acknowledge for their students' failures. Guaranteed: If every student misses the same question on a test, it wasn't taught in a comprehendable way. It's amazing how good teachers can get results from students who no one else can motivate.

It's not my fault when a student fails, unless I'm a crappy teacher.

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-88783192117460547052008-10-16T21:30:00.001-05:002008-10-16T21:37:26.875-05:00Christians under attack in India

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-46597660412255776172008-10-12T21:27:00.003-05:002008-10-12T21:48:09.008-05:00It's also scary that people get what they want.Sir Clive Barnes on the topic of television:

"It is the first truly democratic culture, the first culture available to everyone and entirely governed by what the people want. The most terrifying thing is what people do want."
(New York Times, December 30, 1969)

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-48322741088640824622008-10-08T17:34:00.003-05:002008-10-08T17:41:22.915-05:00People usually need a friend, not a preacher.God tells us to "rejoice with those who rejoice," and "weep with those who weep."
He does not tell us to rejoice with those who weep and weep with those who rejoice.

Very often, I am inclined to remind my happy friends why they should be thankful and encourage my down-trodden friends that things will get better. Usually, though, people don't need my (or your) advice. If they did, they'd ask for it. Most of all, rejoicers want someone to rejoice with them and weepers want someone to weep with them.

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-25263107334245261272008-10-04T12:34:00.002-05:002008-10-04T12:39:46.431-05:00Spurgeon on FaultfindingMark Driscoll shared these thoughts from Charles Spurgeon at the DesiringGod National Conference last weekend. As someone who is prone to pride and faultfinding myself, this is a very apt quote.

“Many hearers lose much blessing through criticizing too much, and meditating too little; and many more incur great sin by calumniating those who live for the good of others. True pastors have enough of care and travail without being burdened by undeserved and useless fault-finding. We have something better to do than to be for ever answering every malignant or frivolous slander which is set afloat to injure us….there are tender, loving spirits who feel the trial very keenly, and are sadly hindered in brave service by cruel assaults. The rougher and stronger among us laugh at those who ridicule us, but upon others the effect is very sorrowful…

As ministers we are very far from being perfect, but many of us are doing our best, and we are grieved that the minds of our people should be more directed to our personal imperfections than to our divine message ….

Filled with the same spirit of contrariety, the men of this world still depreciate the ministers whom God sends them and profess that they would gladly listen if different preachers could be found. Nothing can please them, their cavils are dealt out with heedless universality. Cephas is too blunt, Apollos is too flowery, Paul is too argumentative, Timothy is too young, James is too severe, John is too gentle…

Well then, let each servant of God tell his message in his own way. To his own Master he shall stand or fall…

Judge the preacher if you like, but do remember that there is something better to be done than that, namely, to get all the good you can out of him, and pray his Master to put more good into him.”

- from Eccentric Preachers by C.H. Ignorant?

"He never refers to secular history, poetry, rhetoric, mathematics, astronomy, foreign languages, natural sciences, discoveries, and inventions, or any of those branches of knowledge which make up human learning and literature. He confined himself strictly to religion. But, from that center, he sheds light over the whole world of man and nature and acts as a universal inspirer of higher and purer thought. In this department, unlike other great men, even the prophets and apostles, he is absolutely original and independent. He teaches the world as one who had learned nothing from it, and is under no obligation to it. He speaks from divine intuition, as one who not only knows the truth, but is the truth; and with an authority that commands absolute submission, or provokes rebellion, but can never be passed by with contempt or indifference."

-Philip Schaff The Person of Christ p.40-41

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-3772316368641289182008-09-18T15:59:00.005-05:002008-09-18T17:47:05.557-05:00The worst thing about working with people is that they are, well, people.Dilbert

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-82421990532774318702008-09-17T18:22:00.001-05:002008-09-18T16:03:16.924-05:00Keith Green - Jesus Commands Us To Go!

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-83037452240528583022008-09-15T16:44:00.002-05:002008-09-15T16:55:18.345-05:00Is God a surgeon or an emergency room doctor? In "The Painful Discipline of our Heavenly Father" John Piper says this about Hebrews 12:3-11:

(emphasis mine)

Some people "say that God is not in charge of the evil that happens to us. That he has given the world over to Satan and the free will of man. But it will not work in this passage. The hostility of sinners is real and it is wrong and responsible and guilty. But it is also - and this is a great hope for us - it is also the loving, painful discipline of our Father in heaven. God is not coming to his children late after the attack, and saying, "I can make this turn for good." That is not discipline. That is repair. It's the difference between the surgeon who plans the incision for our good, and the emergency room doctor who sews us up after a freak accident. This text says, God is the doctor planning our surgery, not the doctor repairing our lacerations."

When the pain of life has hurt me the most, my comfort has been this:
God loves me.
God has all the strength in the world.
God gives me every good thing and no bad thing.
God is not surprised by my pain.

My friends, please trust a God who's hands are not tied. It was nothing overpowering or offensive, just a little whiff of, "Do you smell something?" Once in a while, we would find random pieces of dog food on the floor of the passenger side. I decided to change the cabin air filter in the hope of eliminating the smell, and, consequently, I discovered the source of the dog food, too.

After removing the glove box, I pulled the old filter from its housing. This is what came with it:

As I was digging this smelly junk out of the vent - scratching and pinching my hands - I took a bit of solace in the thought, "I'm so going to blog this."

I have to admit, I'm not too sure how a couple of pounds of dog food falls down an air-conditioning vent, but it happened. I have proof.

If you had ever considered it, this should be an overwhelming argument against the practice of carrying an open bag of Purina on your dash while maneuvering through hair-pin turns.

As for me, I'm looking forward to our car having a baking-soda-fresh scent from now on.

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-91259144387948415752008-09-03T20:11:00.003-05:002008-09-03T20:25:59.663-05:00Now, no matter what your politics, that is a moment for the history books.ABC's Terry Moran:

Wouldn't it actually be a moment for the science books?

Props to: Irish Calvinist, Z, & JT

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-5015495468056566932008-08-30T15:31:00.004-05:002008-09-03T21:13:34.996-05:00Back from lifeIt's been a while, but I'm writing again. Over the past few weeks, I've been doing some serious work around our house, starting the school year again, and receiving the great news that we are expecting our second child (!). It has felt extremely busy for me, but we are being to develop something of a routine again.
Nothing too structured in this post; it's more of an update.

A few thoughts:
- The McCain/Palin ticket is encouraging. Admittedly, I wasn't too psyched about John McCain. I had viewed my vote more like voting against Barak Obama than for John McCain. This is a VP candidate that, so far, I feel good about.

-My wife is selling some of her photography. Check it out.

-The Cardinals need to string some wins together. It isn't September, yet, but it's begining to look less likely that they will make the play-offs. I'm still hoping, but they need to get hot.

-Happy Birthday to Michael Jackson. Look, I think the guy is plenty weird, but I enjoy some of his old music.

-MIZ-ZOU

-I'm looking forward to the new Lecrae CD.

-Oh yeah, we're expecting again!! Estimated due date: April 18, 2009.

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709085799749955038.post-45929637249552365002008-08-15T22:46:00.001-05:002008-08-16T21:43:54.415-05:00Bob Kauflin: Does God Sing?

Brian Keith Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02486892805940000598briankassie@gmail.com0
