Familiar Faces, New Positions

Starting June 1st, Kathy Bartelt is now the Acquisitions & Collection Development Librarian. Kathy takes over for the newly retired Marvin Guilfoyle.

Meg Atwater-Singer is now the Collection Management Librarian. Meg assumes Kathy's previous position in Circulation.

Back in 2006, I wrote a post about creating bookmarks in your browser which provide an easy way to search for books in ACE from online bookstores. What the bookmark does is pull the ISBN off the webpage and inserts it into a search in ACE.

For example, my IN ACE? bookmark:

Don't forget to enable pop-ups or this won't work!

Here is the code that makes the bookmark work. Paste it into its location box: code.
Right-clicking on the code link might even let you save the code link as a bookmark. Choose that option and give it a memorable name like IN ACE?

Caveat: books get published in various ways with different ISBNs. UEL might own the hardcover, paperback or school/library edition of a title. Multiple searches of the assorted ISBNs might be necessary.

Borrowing Books from Other Indiana Libraries

If you are planning on visiting an Indiana library this summer (or ever), the Academic Libraries of Indiana (ALI) have agreed to extend in-person borrowing privileges to University of Evansville faculty, staff, and students.

Individuals wishing to participate in this program need:

an ALI Borrowers Card authorized by UE library personnel,
a University of Evansville Identification Card,
a photo ID with a current address (such as a driver’s license)

The ALI Borrowers Card is valid for one year and may be updated annually.See the Circulation Desk for more information!

CINAHL Clinical Queries Now Available

Recently, EBSCO announced that CINAHL searchers can employ Clinical Queries. Designed for clinician use, Clinical Queries allow users to limit searches with specific search strategies, to aid in retrieving scientifically sound and clinically relevant study reports indexed in CINAHL databases. Searches can be refined using specific search strategies designed to produce results in five research areas:

Therapy - High Sensitivity
Prognosis
Review
Qualitative
Causation (Etiology)

As research may require different emphasis, three strategies are provided for each area.

High Sensitivity is the broadest search, to include ALL relevant material. It may also include less relevant materials.
High Specificity is the most targeted search to include only the most relevant result set, may miss some relevant materials.
Best Balance retrieves the best balance between Sensitivity and Specificity.

The University of Evansville seeks creative, energetic librarian to direct successful course-integrated instruction program. Familiarity with trends and new techniques in library instruction, knowledge of course management and web technology, effective communication skills, and a commitment to excellence of library service are essential.

Responsibilities: Plan, implement, promote, and assess instruction program. Coordinate all instruction activities. Teach majority of instruction sessions. Collaborate with teaching faculty. Contribute to all reference services in consultation with Head Reference Librarian. Participate in programmatic priorities, decision-making, and planning of the Libraries. Report to University Librarian.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited graduate program. Prefer one year professional experience in an academic library. Technology savvy. Experience with reference assistance. Prefer teaching experience. Capable of satisfying University faculty requirements for tenure.

Appointment, Salary & Benefits: 12 month tenure-track faculty appointment at instructor or assistant professor rank. Minimum salary: $30,000 plus benefits. Have you ever received a chain letter via email? I certainly have. I either delete them or debunk them. But I've never considered how a chain letter arrived in my inbox. Two scientists at Cornell did and have recently published an article about it.

There’s More To “Finding” Than We Thought

A Pew Internet & American Life Project study about search engine users indicated that the vast majority of them expressed satisfaction with their search skills, but were naive about search engines and their results.

According to the study, 92% of those who use search engines say they are confident about their searching and 87% of searchers say they have successful search experiences most of the time, including some 17% of users who say they always find the information for which they are looking.

Over at the ACRLog, they make the connection between using Google to find the latest information on Paris Hilton or the Academy Awards ceremony and those who have expressed confidence in their searching to Pew. Also mentioned is Jakob Nielsen's post on the slight improvement of users skills on known websites.

Dean's List Display

Students who earned Dean's List status for the fall 2007 semester are recognized in an exhibit on level one of the UE Libraries. Student scholars earn this academic honor at the conclusion of each semester by having been enrolled in courses totaling 12 or more hours (excluding Pass/Fail courses) and earning a semester grade point average of 3.5 or above on a four point scale. The exhibit continues at the Libraries through March 9.

OLDMEDLINE Content Continues to Extend Back in Time

Beginning on December 28, 2007, citations from the 1949 Current List of Medical Literature (CLML) were added to the OLDMEDLINE subset in PubMed®. These 55,557 citations have not yet been mapped to current MeSH®. To search PubMed for citations originating from OLDMEDLINE use jsubsetom. For additional information about the OLDMEDLINE data project, see: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/databases/databases_oldmedline.html.

Bibme

Danielle recently told me about a website called BibMe. You can type in book titles or ISBN numbers and BibMe gives you a list of choices. Double click on the title and it updates the "My Bibliography" on the right side. The default citation style seems to be MLA, but you can change it to APA, Chicago or Turabian. After creating a bibliography, you can download it or save it.

BibMe is less successful finding citations for journal articles. If you use Academic Search Premier, ATLAS, ERIC or any of the other databases UEL buys through EBSCOhost, you are better off using the citation formatting options there.

Find it @ UE!

You may have noticed this button in many of UEL's online databases like WorldCat and Academic Search Premier. This button does the same thing that the link Check for Full Text/Check ACE/Request ILL did.

For example, from a results list:

Clicking the Find It button takes you to this screen:

If the item is full text, a link and GO button will appear under that section.

If there is no full text, options to search ACE, consult the Journal List and request the item through Interlibrary Loan are all present.

Look for more announcements concerning this VERY important change in 2008.

JSTOR's Interface

The Library Mourns Judy Sights

Judy Sights, Library Associate and Night Supervisor Extraordinaire, died Saturday morning, December 15, 2007, at the Visiting Nurse Association Charlier Hospice Center of Evansville.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, at First Baptist Church. The Reverend Todd Linn, Ph.D. and the Reverend Alan Chamness will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cementary.

Judy will be missed!

New students are invited to tour the Library during the opening days of the autumn semester. Tours will highlight key library services offered to students. Each tour will take twenty minutes and will be led by a member of the Libraries' staff. Tour times are noted below.

Thursday, Aug. 30 at noon, 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 31 at noon, 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Ramona Apartments' Sidewalk - Done!

The sidewalk construction was completed last week, including reseeding the lawn.

Construction Update

Last week, a lot happened, construction-wise, around here. Below are pictures of the walkway construction outside the library, the new drive between Hale & Hughes, and the new "flood-resistant" Ramona sidewalk.

You might recall an earlier post where I discerned the pattern of the bricks outside the library. I was wrong.

Short-term parking for Hughes will soon be where the backhoes are.
