Dennis M. Schnurr, coadjutor archbishop of Cincinnati since Oct. 17, 2008, has succeeded the Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk as archbishop, becoming the 10th ordinary (presiding bishop) of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati since its founding in 1821.

The move follows Pope Benedict XVI’s acceptance today of Archbishop Pilarczyk’s resignation, which he submitted on his 75th birthday, Aug. 12, 2009, in accord with church law. He had been archbishop for 27 years, longer than any other currently serving archbishop in the United States.

“One year ago, when Pope Benedict XVI appointed me coadjutor archbishop of Cincinnati, I was humbled and honored,” Archbishop Schnurr stated. “Today, after having had the opportunity to visit so many of our parishes, schools, and other institutions over the past months, I feel even more grateful and privileged. The welcome has been overwhelming, and I look forward to working with our priests, deacons, religious and lay people in building upon the solid foundation of faith that is so evident in our communities.”

He will be available to answer questions from the media at a news conference at 12:30 p.m. today at the Atheneaum of Ohio/ Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, 6616 Beechmont Avenue, Anderson Township, in the Westerfield Room.

Archbishop Schnurr, 61, brings to the leadership of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati a distinguished background as a canon lawyer, diocesan administrator, member of the papal nuncio’s staff, organizer of the first World Youth Day and general secretary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Iowa native was bishop of Duluth for seven years until being appointed coadjutor archbishop of Cincinnati. In the past year he has maintained a heavy schedule of activities taking him to all corners of the 19-county Archdiocese as he has gotten to know his new flock.

Archbishop Pilarczyk, a native of Dayton, Ohio, was the longest currently serving active bishop in the United States, as well as the longest-tenured archbishop. The person who thought this was a great idea for an ad, or the person who thought Hispanic people would love it?

The National Association of Latino Elected Officials recently put out an ad for spring's national Census. It features a typical Christmas graphic of Mary, Joseph, and a star, beneath the hilarious headline, "This Is How Jesus Was Born" (oh really?) and the subhead, "Joseph and Mary Participated in the Census."

First of all, Mary and Joseph didn't participate in the US Census. Second, the Biblical census wasn't exactly a Good Thing. Jesus was born under a puppet government run by a foreign power holding a census to better oppress a conquered people. Other that, I guess, the two censuses have a lot in common.

"Don't be Afraid," the poster says, in what may or may not be a Biblical reference. It's hard to tell whether the people who thought up this poster know enough about the Bible to be able to quote it.

So far, press coverage of the ads has been -- like this Washington Post story -- concentrated on the political aspects of participation in the Census or the ethical aspects of using religion in political ads.

But the real story is the sheer stupidity of the ad itself. So I'll ask it again: Who is dumber? The people who advertised the US Census with Caesar's Census? Or the ones who think Hispanic people won't notice?

The list of good and bad advertisers mentioned my Marybeth Hicks this morning is online at:

parentstv.org.

M. "If things get too stressful, it will go off."

It went off. After a hectic week and a tense weekend, the barometer went sky high (or is that dropped low?) just when it was time to leave for school. No warning, just an explosion out of nowhere.

Well, not really out of nowhere. A week of frantic driving to appointments, work, sports practices, games, and graduate school -- plus, over the weekend, church and two parties (one per child). Disputes over being late, over what we had to skip and when. Nagging, anger, and hurt feelings over who was going to do the housework and exactly how much of it would not get done. Teenage attitude, gradeschool reluctance, adult procrastination. It's a potent mix anytime. Add Christmas shopping, birthday shopping, grocery shopping, hardware shopping, and planning for holiday get-togethers with two families in two states, and bang! The barometer goes off.

It's Advent and we should be slowing down, not ramping up. Yet I find myself more irritable, my feelings more easily pricked, than I am inclined toward prayer and penitence. My parish has only half an hour a week set aside for confession -- and this week it was right during a birthday party and the only time I can make it to IKEA, for goodness sake.

I'm supposed to work, figure out and buy the perfect presents for everyone in the family, volunteer, bake things for two schools, write a paper, make about a dozen appointments, pay the bills, monitor homework, manage carpools, write a couple of blog posts, study... Believe me, I could add to that list. But when the barometer goes off, everything else goes on hold. It's time to slow down, to be calm, to take one thing at a time. It's time to say, "Of course we can do this. Nothing bad is going to happen. Everything is going to be just fine."

Funny how, when I forget to believe that myself, I have to make it true. It's almost a blessing, really. The barometer doesn't go off as much anymore, as a young someone learns the hard lesson that stress isn't intolerable and that life really can be managed and even enjoyed most of the time. But when it does go off, nothing -- nothing -- is more important. Everything can wait. And after all, waiting with patience, with penitence for our mistakes, and with hope for the future is what Advent is all about.

Guests for Monday, 12/14/2009

Kevin Schmiesing is online at catholichistory.net.

Patti Armstrong, author of "Dear God, I Don't Get It!"

Bishop David Ricken, author of "Be Thou My Vision: Meditations on the Priesthood"

Amy Welborn is online at amywelborn.com.

Joan Wester Anderson, author of "Where Miracles Happen"

Heidi Bratton, author of the "Celebrate" board book series for small children
<img style="float:left; Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, even Miley Cyrus... these people have so little to offer that apparently some nipple clamps (ugh), same-gender kisses, and pole dances are required.

And those things are BORING. They are calculated to shock, under the lame old assumption that people who shock others are somehow artistic geniuses. They just can't help themselves, they are so full of transgressive artistic passion!

Well, that's not what they're full of. As noted music critic Scott F says, the truth is that Adam Lambert wants to be bad and corporate at the same time. "He doesn't have the guts to just man-up and say - 'Hey, baby, that's my show!' like a REAL punker," he says. "He wants to be a 'safe' and corporate-sponsored AND bad."

And CBS's questions about children viewers? Scott F has a good point about that also: "Adults have standards too," he says. "That question is just the interviewer being a weenie. 'Oh' she cries, 'what about the children?' Wah wah wah. She should just say, 'Adam, your shrieking greasy gay-show stunk.'"

Now I would never say that, because I am a responsible blogger for a Catholic radio station and I can't use that kind of language. What I say is this: If he had half the talent he thinks he has, Adam Lambert wouldn't need lame underground gay nightclub antics to get people to buy his records, and if he were really sincere about them being necessary for his "art," he wouldn't be appearing on ABC in the first place.

But he wants the money and fame that come from mainstream venues, and he wants people to be so cowed by the idea of being labeled a prude that they won't say that the emperor has no talent. So I will: Adam Lambert isn't a brave gay rocker bringing his transgressive art to the masses. He's a boring, derivative poser who wants a lot of money and figured that since his modest singing talent wasn't going to get it for him, he'd go with Plan B.

After all, it worked for Madonna.

Fr Ted Ross says that this is the best book available on the life of St. Francis Xavier

M.
