Ads like these tricked children into selling cheap crap by promising them cheap crap prizes for their hard work. Lone children went door-to-door trying to sell boxes of crappy All Occasion Cards. Some children went missing due to perverts having doors for these children to knock upon. The missing children rarely re-surfaced to enjoy their crappy prize hair dryer or whatever.

Imagine lugging this portable around with you? but if you travel back in hair dryer time far enough, you'll find large bonnet styles on tall stands that could slide, fold, roll and do whatever it took to be... portable. The very first hairdryers were completely stationary and scary. I don't know who invented the portable but hair dryer academics say the first hair dryer was invented by some French guy hair stylist back in the late 1800's. I think that hair dryers simply became portable by degrees, each one smaller and easy to tote around.

I receive a ton of letters and e mails with questions about this blog, portable hair dryers, and so forth. I throw most of them away, because who has the time? But one letter caught my eye, and it came with a sad photo enclosed.

You are a very lovely person and your blog is the best blog ever.
I recently bought a boat and want to change the name of it.
The name was put on with vinyl letters and I tried removing them but
it's messy. Someone said they think you would use a portable hair
dryer to remove them. If so, how exactly would you do it?

Dear Clueless,
Don't despair, just follow my instructions and you'll have a new name on your boat in no time at all. Besides a portable hair dryer, you'll need a PLASTIC ice scraper and an extension cord.

Hold the hair dryer about 5-7" from the surface and set to the lowest heat setting. (NOT COOL) If the setting is too hot it will cause the vinyl to melt into the boat's original varnish (gel coat) and cause a nasty mark. As you gently apply the light heat in a rhythmic fashion, swaying to and fro, begin to lift the edges of those ugly vinyl letters.
BE VERY PATIENT.
After the name has been removed, the area will have to be cleaned , dried gently and polished evenly. you'll want a nice smooth consistent surface so you can apply the new name.

I do not recommend using a portable hair dryer on a cat--toweling the cat dry with nice warm fluffy towels is the way to go for even the wettest coldest cat. (you can pop some towels in the clothes dryer to warm them.)

Shoe Theme!

I'm very excited about this Theme Day, because I LOVE house-shoes (aka house slippers, aka bedroom slippers) While I don't make people take their shoes off when they come into my home, I like to wear slippers myself.

The velveteen slipper shown here was made in the UK and the pair cost me 4 pounds. Very durable.
I don't buy slippers made in China.
Slippers are great because if your pets gnaw on them it's OK, it's only a house slipper after all.

Transporting a Dryer

Remember Charm Bracelets?

I remember when I got my charm bracelet back in my school days. I didn't have my portable hair dryer charm (shown above) yet. The bracelet only came with one charm on it, a small gold toaster. I could see then that it would be a small appliance charm bracelet! That excited me. It isn't easy finding small electrics charms, which makes it all the more valuable. And sentimental, as my parents both loved small dangerous appliances and passed that love along to me. I will never forget my mother standing nearby with an amused smile on her face watching a tiny little me trying to get my piece of toast out of the toaster with a metal fork. The shock I got from that little action pushed me into the air--and did it ever TINGLE in a scary way. So I guess that's why the first charm was a toaster. A nice little memory of childhood folly.
