Haute
Curated by Roman Stollenwerk
Starting from the premise that all art is inherently “haute” because of its cost, value and the way in which it is collected, displayed and distributed, Haute is a visual conversation about the qualities that define the exclusivity of Art. Fashion, interior design and other “lifestyle” products have different tiers of value. The difference between mass-production clothing and high fashion is immediately apparent; however, these divides are not as obvious in fine art because anything outside the realm of high art is often excluded from even being considered Art. Haute features the work of artists that use different strategies to recognize, challenge or disrupt this barrier. Haute includes work by: Kevin Appel, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Delia Brown, Chris Christion, Nicole Cohen, Bart Exposito, Anton Henning, Jim Isermann, Eamon O’Kane, Melanie Pullen, and Ami Tallman.

Suzanne Erickson
Pulling from her background in modeling and acting, Suzanne Erickson explores human drama and the humiliations, failures, hopes and successes that she has experienced. By exploring her own past, Erickson also touches on a broad humanistic project that looks at human experience and the ways in which we all “perform” as individuals, creating personas and identities for ourselves that are largely shaped by the social forces that surround and pressure us. Writing, taking photos, making videos and collecting found objects are all components to her process that informs and feeds her projects. The resulting objects and images vacillate between the rough hand-made object and the commercially produced product. Her work maintains evidence of the process and the action of its making, while exuding a drama and presence that echoes the glamour and confidence of window displays, advertisements and theatrical sets.

Bari Ziperstein
Bari Ziperstein’s work investigates consumer culture and challenges viewers to question the associations that people forge with spaces and objects. Her photographic collages, reassembled thrift store furniture and hand-made ceramic objects take as their subject our perceptions and expectations of domestic space and the material abundance of retail space. By fusing the form and rhetoric of modernism with the aesthetics of design magazines and showrooms, she creates work that is familiar in its materials, while disorienting in its form and presence. Her work ultimately veers toward sly humor and absurdity, provoking viewers to consider the significance of the objects surrounding them.

The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public.
Parents are always encouraged to view the show prior to sharing with children.

New Center for the Arts Building to Open in Spring

The new Center for the Arts building (CAA, three-storied building at northeast corner of Rancho Cucamonga campus, depicted in banner at top of blog) will be open for some courses at the beginning of the Spring 2010 semester. These room changes will only impact courses scheduled on the Rancho Cucamonga campus.

The Art History (Art 1, 3, 5, 6, 9), Photo 1 and Fine Arts 50 courses will be taught in the new Art History lecture room, CAA 211.

This annual student exhibition runs December 3-10 in the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art, and features work from all Chaffey College art, photography and digital media classes. The work is chosen by faculty in each discipline and the exhibition features hundreds of the semester‚Äôs best student works of art. Damian Ross, Adjunct Ceramics Professor

Brianna Sendziak, Adjunct Photography Professor
Her work will be highlighted in a group show titled Shock and Awe: Where the Abject and Sublime Converge, November 15-19 at the Gatov Galleries, California State University, Long Beach. Campaign for CUCAMONGA

The Chaffey College Art Committee is launching the Campaign for CUCAMONGA to bring an exciting permanent public sculpture to the campus. In the 2008 Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition, Inlandia and the 2008 Temporary Art Park organized by the Art Committee, you may recall seeing Inland Empire-based artist Amy Maloofʼs sculpture Props. The positive response to this art installation was incredible, and a movement began for a permanent installation – to make the artwork a part of Chaffey College for years to come.

Maloof's life-size homage to the Hollywood sign gives a nod and a wink to the world of make-believe to our West and screams, "the Inland Empire and Chaffey College are here and we're proud!" It serves as a symbol of our community, our unity and our common goals at Chaffey College and in the I.E.

Support the Campaign for CUCAMONGA and help us add this exciting piece of public art to the Chaffey College Art Collection.

World's Smallest Postal Service

The Chaffey Art Organization and the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art present Lea Redmond of Leafcutter Designs, World's Smallest Postal Service, Wednesday, October 14, 12:30-2:30 PM in CAC-101.

Join San Francisco Bay-based Lea Redmond and her World’s Smallest Postal Service (WSPS) roaming post office and transcription service. Redmond acts as Postmaster, setting up her tiny mobile office in cafes, shops, and museums where passers-by can write a letter and have it turned into the “world’s smallest letter.” The letter is transcribed on a miniature desk in the tiniest of script, sealed with a mini-wax seal, and packaged with a small magnifying glass. The first 30 visitors to WSPS will receive one free letter transcription; others can watch Redmond in action or purchase a letter from her directly. Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art are pleased to present CUT: Makings of Removal, a group exhibition that presents contemporary artists who hand cut paper to make two- and three-dimensional works that blur the boundaries between drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and collage. The artists included in CUT: Makings of Removal present diverse strategies along the organizing principle of removal; each follows a process of reduction in which work is created by removing and re-contextualizing material from its original form. Artists include: David Adey, Noriko Ambe, Ginny Bishton, Lecia Dole-Recio, Adam Fowler, Dinh Q. Lê, Simone Lourenço, Dana Maiden, Pepe Mar, Chris Natrop, Justin Pearce, Leigh Salgado, Fran Siegel, Jane South, and Deb Whistler. CUT was originally organized in Fall 2008 by Karen Rapp, director of the Vincent Price Art Museum, East Los Angeles College.

In conjunction with CUT: Makings of Removal the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art is offering a free Papel Picado Workshop with LA-based artist Margaret Sosa. Sosa has been working as a paper cutter in the Mexican style known as papel picado for over 25 years. She learned the art form from master paper cutter, Olga Ponce Furginson, serving as her apprentice for many years. Her work has been exhibited galleries and museums throughout the Los Angeles area and internationally. Margaret is a graduate of California State University Los Angeles, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art.

Papel picado is the Mexican folk art of cutting tissue paper into decorative banners that are used to adorn altars or as decorations for festive events. Paper cutting has a long history in Mexico and today, Mexican paper cutters continue the art of papel picado using hammers and special chisels with distinctive points for cutting through many layers of tissue paper and most recently are now using sheets of colorful plastic to create unique detailed works of art.

Exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.

Alphabet and Sky Burchard

Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to present Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering & Experimental Typography and Sky Burchard: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone from August 24 – September 26, 2009, with a reception on September 9, 6-8pm. Sky Burchard will give a talk about his work on Monday, September 14, 2009, from 12:30 – 1:30pm.

Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering & Experimental Typography
Post Typography asked each of the 47 artists and designers in Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering & Experimental Typography to present their alphabets removed from the context of words and typography, therefore focusing on the shapes as an end. The 60 alphabets in this exhibition (all received through an international open call) are shown dissected into their base elements – A through Z – freeing the artists and designers from the confines of legibility. At the same time, they were challenged to expand the experiment into a complete system that goes beyond a short headline, the realm to which such experimentation is usually relegated.

Sky Burchard: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone
In It’s Dangerous to Go Alone, LA-based artist Sky Burchard will focus on the game The Legend of Zelda and the lone explorer “Link” and the weapons and tools he collects along his journey. In this exhibition, the viewer is allowed to enter into the video screen and is confronted with the formal issues inherent in the process of translating the pixilated two-dimensional representations in Zelda into physical objects. In this process, Burchard remains faithful to the representational system of the game and consequently the objects become abstracted as they depart from the conventional rules of three-dimensional representation. By delving into the world of games, It’s Dangerous to Go Alone also raises questions about the ways technology and fantasy can both supplement and replace social interaction and intimacy; the world of fantasy parallels Link's journey, where the process of becoming the hero supersedes the final goal, leaving the explorer perpetually alone on the journey.

Match Wits With Inspector Ford

See Theatre Professor Kelly Ford's entry in the Fullerton College Director's Festival. It is a Fellini inspired farce, discussed by Woody Allen in his memoir and adapted by Kelly Ford and Craig Fleming. Art History Instructor Denise Johnson also appears in the play as "Can Can Kitten" along side several fantastic up-and-coming Chaffey stars.

You may see a free, full viewing of the 40 minute play on Monday, June 22 at 12:30 pm (curtain time 1:00 pm) in the Chaffey Theatre. Or, you may purchase tickets for the Director's Festival performance at Fullerton College on Tuesday, June 23 at 8:00 pm.
