The woman isn't the only person in this country suffering from a sudden encounter with a drunken driver. Many others have met similar fates in the 21 years since Harn was injured, and there will be more such accidents. We find that offensive.
Just last month, a Hutchinson man was charged in connection with drunken driving after being arrested on a moped. It was the 11th time he had been charged with DUI. He was on parole from a previous DUI conviction that involved running into fuel pumps and setting them ablaze.
He isn't alone in his refusal to learn. Many more multiple offenders somehow manage to spend more time behind the wheel than behind bars

Also grieving Darius demise are his monosyllabic-bordering-on-mute son, James, and his ex, Marlee (Tarra Riggs), a former substance abuser. Larry survives his self-inflicted gunshot wound, and returns from the hospital only to have his nephew darken his doorstep, literally and figuratively. For James unique means of mourning involves asking to hear all the gory details about how his daddy died before robbing Uncle Larry at gunpoint.
The felonious-intentioned kid then hops on his moped and uses his ill-gotten gains to kickstart a career dealing drugs. This doesn t sit well with Marlee, even though she s been fired from her job as a maid, which means she s now free to wonder where she went wrong raising a son who doesn t have a lick of sense or compassion.
As preposterous as this plot probably sounds, Ballast is actually a perverse pleasure to watch because it morphs into this ethereal mood piece with virtually no dialogue. Mostly, we re treated to the specter of James buzzing about on his motorbike against the stark backdrop of acre after acre of sparse winter farmland.
Otherwise, the picture is punctuated by his mom and uncle working out their issues, and bursts of terrifying violence, like when a couple of teenage gangstas run a car off the road to teach a lesson via a drive-by beatdown in a backwoods version of a bloody turf war.
In sum, Ballast is one of those slice-of-life adventures featuring a principal cast of non-professionals whose gritty naivete manage to imbue the production with a palpable sense of super-realism that allows an audience to forget it s watching actors

HONOLULU, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- DeWayne McKinney, who spent 19 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit, has died in Honolulu of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.
The Honolulu Police Department says McKinney was not wearing a helmet when his scooter crashed into a wooden light pole, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
McKinney, 47, made national news in 2000 when the district attorney in Orange County, Calif. obtained his release from prison saying he had been wrongly convicted of a 1980 robbery and murder at a Burger King restaurant.
At the time of his arrest, McKinney was a member of a Los Angeles street gang

Very Compact Vehicle: A 24-year-old man reported on Sept. 21 that someone stole his $500 moped from Harden Street. The report noted that the stealer(s) used an unknown method to take the moped. They probably, like, picked it up, put it in a car and drove away with it.

HONOLULU (AP) A man who built a successful business in Hawaii after serving close to 20 years in a California prison for a murder he didn't commit died yesterday of injuries he received in a traffic accident in Honolulu.
Police say DeWayne McKinney wasn't wearing a helmet when the mo-ped he was operating drifted off Waialae Avenue about 12:38 a.m. and hit a bus stop sign and utility pole.
The 47-year-old McKinney was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash, but not alcohol.
McKinney was convicted of the 1980 Orange County, California, killing of a Burger King manager after four employees identified him in court as the gunman

'Robotique Majestique,' the band's third full-length studio album, hit stores in March. In an interesting departure from the usual magazine routine, I recently served as a judge for a competition run by Fiat to design a fun mode of transport. As well as being a chance to mix with glamorous TV personalities and eat unusual canaps at the winners presentation, it gave a fascinating insight into the realities of industrial design and innovation.

The entries covered a broad range of technologies and showed a blend of inventiveness in terms of concepts and the technologies that can be brought to bear on them. Bicycle parts played a major role in both a road-going rowing machine with steer-by-wire control and a redesigned mechanism that keeps the rowers head still while his hands and feet go backwards and forwards; and in a folding three-wheeled electric moped with an ingenious tilt-steering system devised by its unassuming young inventor while he was still in his teens. An upwards-arching skateboard uses rack-and-pinion gearing familiar from toy cars to propel it forward when the rider bounces up and down. High-tech materials form the concept for a high-heeled shoe that converts quickly to a flat sole. And the final winner used cunning stress analysis to produce a pared-down design for folding BMX-style handlebars that bolt onto a standard snowboard to create a new winter sport.
All the finalists were young engineers from industrial design or engineering courses whose names would be familiar to readers, and it was quite clear that these courses were doing their job exceptionally well. Anybody who thinks that young British engineers are lacking in ideas or ingenuity, or are divorced from the real world, would have been forced to eat their words (along with the rabbit ragout on polenta or the stewed octopus

KAIMUKI (KHNL) - A 47-year-old man died in a moped accident early Tuesday morning.
It happened at 12:38 a.m. on Waialae Avenue in the Kaimuki area.
Police say he was traveling east bound near 14th street when he drifted off the roadway and slammed into a metal bus stop sign and then into a wooden light pole.
He suffered severe head injuries. Police say he was not wearing a helmet.
He was taken in critical condition to a hospital where he later died.
Police say alcohol is not a factor but speed may be a possible factor.

ONOLULU -- A millionaire businessman died in an early-morning moped crash in Kaimuki on Tuesday.

Hawaiian officials have a man suspected of passing bad checks in Michigan.
October 7, 2008: WSGW-AM: State Police have a 53-year-old Honolulu man in custody for check fraud. Troopers say the man, a former East Tawas resident, is charged with writing no account checks to businesses in several Michigan counties. Honolulu Police arrested the man early last month on 15 felony warrant, issued by Michigan prosecutors and a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution

DeWayne McKinney, who built a multimillion dollar ATM empire after spending nearly 20 years in prison for an Orange County murder he didn't commit, died early Tuesday morning in a moped accident in Honolulu, Hawaii.
McKinney, 47, was killed when he lost control of his moped and crashed into a bus sign on Waialai Avenue, near the intersection of 14th Avenue, at 12:38 a.m., said Carolyn Sluyter, spokeswoman for the Honolulu Police Department. She said speed may have been a factor in the crash and there was no evidence of alcohol use.
McKinney was not wearing a helmet.
The onetime convict who didn't know how to use a soda fountain when he was released from prison in 2000 owned a chain of ATM machines on the islands. In an interview with Jet magazine, McKinney said, 'I believe that God's hand has always been on me

ANTON, Ohio -- Deputies are investigating an accident involving a GlenOak High School student in Plain Township.
Deputies said an accident happened at 7:28 a.m. on Schneider Street involving Normal Evans, 14 and Aaron Stover, 18.
Evans was traveling west on Schneider on a Silver Tomos Moped and Stover was traveling east in a 1997 Lincoln Continental when Stovers turned left hitting Evans in the left leg.
Evans was transported to Aultman Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
