He uses the term 'grayscale' to refer to gradations between binary opposites which are often present in his work. These include rigid/free, improvisation/composition or algorithm, real-time/offline, and tonal/atonal. Miller attempts in his work to traverse these gradations; sometimes with gentle shifts, sometimes with violent leaps from one extreme to the other. The intended result is ambiguity; an obscuring of process, and confusion of which regime a passage lies within each of these axes. Miller's pieces often fit into a category of meta- or counter-composition. This is when several smaller works are brought together in an incommensurate way. They exist within the same framework, yet cannot be considered a unity.

NEIL LEONARD works as a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen, Bruce Barth, Don Byron, Robin Eubanks, and Uri Caine. Founded by pianist and conductor Stephen Drury in the late 1990's, we are an ensemble producing concerts of contemporary music at the highest standard. The Consort consists of a senior band of long standing Thump soloists, but is fundamentally flexible in size and makeup, enabling the group to tackle unusual repertoire in non-standard or larger chamber ensembles, or to take part in experimental projects. Our repertoire encompasses a huge stylistic spectrum, from the classics of the last 50 years to works of the avant-garde and experimental jazz and rock. Active commissioning and recording of new works is crucial to our mission. We have worked with composers John Cage, Lee Hyla, John Zorn, Michael Finnissy, Franco Donatoni, Lukas Foss, Steve Reich, Helmut Lachenmann, John Luther Adams, Frederic Rzewski, Christian Wolff and many others. Recordings are available on Tzadik, New World and Mode records.

JESSICA FELDMAN is an intermedia artist with a background in sound, sculpture and installation. She creates work that asks its audience to engage in dynamic relationships with their physical surroundings, with each other, with larger communities and with political questions. Recent pieces tend toward interactivity and often occur in extremely public or extremely private spaces. She makes use of sculptural materials, video and choreographic practices in addition to sound. Works have been performed, installed and exhibited internationally at art galleries, museums, concert halls, public parks, city streets, tiny closets and the internet and at NYC venues such as The Kitchen, Roulette, The Stone, The Tank, MonkeyTown and Tenri Cultural Institute. Her work has received grants/awards from the LMCC, the Max Kade Foundation, Columbia University, Meet the Composer and the Experimental Television Center, among others.

Links:

http://www.callithumpian.org/
http://www.jessicafeldman.org/nleonardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16386242348218844464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610959970993969131.post-71092456731045693802008-04-23T19:23:00.000-07:002008-04-23T19:43:27.329-07:00BRUXISM and ALLAN CHASE/BRUNO RÅBERG DUO - Friday, May 2<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_yA5lRaeQn0U/SA_wbQLKwlI/AAAAAAAAAkw/Lw-MMBVJIlA/s320/bruxism.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192633246370415186" />
BRUXISM: ANNE RHODES and CARL TESTA
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_yA5lRaeQn0U/SA_wbgLKwmI/AAAAAAAAAk4/WvGDfoHVkv0/s320/Bruno1B%26W.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192633250665382498" />
BRUNO RÅBERG
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_yA5lRaeQn0U/SA_wbgLKwnI/AAAAAAAAAlA/tS600QTa5gE/s320/AllanChaseBari7.07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192633250665382514" />
ALLAN CHASE

BRUXISM:
(ANNE RHODES voice; CARL TESTA double bass/bass clarinet/electronics - featured with the Anthony Braxton 12+1tet)
with guest NEIL LEONARD bass clarinet/electronics

ALLAN CHASE /BRUNO RÅBERG DUO
Chase - saxophones, Råberg - double bass
Leading New England improvisers

Friday, May 2 @ 8:00
$10 suggested donation, $6 with a student ID

ANNE RHODES is a vocalist based in New Haven, CT. Cera) to create a subtle evolution of textures that moves beyond melody, lyricism, and traditional structural confines. Mem1 has collaborated with the Penderecki String Quartet and performed at REDCAT (Disney Hall), the Orange County Museum of Art and the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival. Mem1 was recently awarded a residency from Harvestworks (NYC) to create a new work with video artists Liora Belford. Their second album, Alexipharmaca, is published by Interval Recordings.

Laura Thomas-Merino is a cellist from Los Angeles. She has been featured in festivals in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Peru, and Italy. She has performed with Pamela Z, the Robin Cox Ensemble, OXO and the Providence String Quartet.
