Based on the hair styles and the kitschy crafty deliciousness inside, it appears to be sometime in the late 1960s. There is so much good stuff in this one magazine; I could mine it for inspiration for years to come. Yay! Today’s retrofabulous project is a jaunty little elf made from beads, buttons and tinsel pipe cleaners. Their charming versions are made from lovely felt, pipe cleaners and Styrofoam balls covered with nylon stockings...love them. I’m particularly smitten with the tiny antennae...

I decided to try using beads and bits from my studio. I do love felt so, but I wanted to give it a new spin. I scored these painted wooden face beads in Manhattan, but I’m quite sure you can find similar beads online or at your local craft chains. If not, paint a plain wooden bead yourself, this is a fairly simple series of circles and lines! I would totally sport this as a necklace...seriously. It's that cute! So it falls into the 'ornapendant' category I created last year for sure!

Retrofabulous Perky Pixie Ornament
Copyright 2009 Margot Potter

Materials
30mm wooden face bead (or plain wooden bead you decorate)
1.5” white plastic button
25mm white plastic bead
10mm frosted red Lucite bead (Plaid Fresh)
2 10mm olivine moonglow vintage Lucite beads
7 9mm red moonglow vintage side drilled button Lucite beads
2 19mm olivine Lucite leaves
1 30mm dark olive 3 petal Lucite flower (40mm widest side to side of petals)
2 20mm red vintage (or new) buttons
26 gauge Beadalon German style wire
18 gauge Beadalon Artistic Wire Tinned Copper

Silver tinsel wire

1. Thread a 10” 26 gauge wire over bent in half over the center of a tinsel pipe cleaner.

2. Thread 26 gauge wire into a Lucite flower bead, a white plastic bead, a face bead and into a big button and a final bead. Wrap wire flush to the back and around the bottom of the final bead using pliers to twist and secure. Cut off excess and tuck wire tail into itself.

3. Thread a wire with a red bead and two Lucite leaves. Wrap around the neck area of base. Twist ends, cut off excess and tuck wire into itself.

4. Cut off a 5” segment of tinsel pipe cleaner. Thread a bead on each end and loop wire end with round nose pliers to secure bead. Wrap center of beaded pipe cleaners around neck of base, these are your arms.

5. Thread 6 8mm beads on a 4” section of 26 gauge wire. Wrap wire around waist of base. Use pliers to twist wire, cut off excess and tuck tail under.

6. Thread ends of bottom tinsel into buttons, use pliers to pull wire. Wrap tinsel around itself. These are your legs.

7. Add a wire hook to the top of your ornament and enjoy! This is one of those “use what you’ve got” ideas. I happen to have a generous stash of old bits and baubles around my studio, but this idea works equally as well with last year’s Christmas card and the trims and broken jewelry bits from your own drawers (or if you’re a teen, ask your mom for some stuff to use here.) If you like this vintage inspired look, you can find Victorian era postcards and old jewelry on eBay and if you don’t care about the condition (which I mostly don’t because I’m using them for my artwork) they can come very affordably. Dover Books has a huge selection of permission free images from this time period. If vintage isn’t your thing, adapt the idea to a more modern style.

I rummaged around my studio drawers for things to adhere to the edges. I had some faded old lace from an Estate Sale, broken rhinestone jewelry, old buttons and a vintage stash of Rick Rack trim. I love this silver, white and red color palette, but you can switch it up however you like. The idea in everything I do is to inspire you to be creative and make it your own. Inspiring you to ‘create without filters™’ is what I’m all about. What a fun project for Mom and teen to work on together and these make absolutely lovely gifts.

Materials
Oval 8"x10" mini canvas
Printed permission free image scanned and sized to fit center of frame (mine was 4.5"x7")
Trim (I used red rick rack)
Accent items (buttons, old jewelry, ribbon...whatever you like)
Flourish stamp
Ranger paint dabber silver
Fabric fusion
Liquid fusion
Tulip dimensional paint silver
Tulip dimensional paint multi glitter
Tulip fashion ultra fine multi glitter

Tools
Scissors
Paper cutter
Sea sponge

1. Select an image for your canvas. If you need to scan and size it, do so, but remember that you can’t copy images that are protected by copyright like thinks in books or magazines. Copyright protection in the US is 100 years, so this Victorian era postcard image is officially permission free. Try Dover books for a great selection of permission free images. The image needs to fit the center of the canvas, so size accordingly.

2. Use a sea sponge to apply a layer of silver paint to the edges of the canvas leaving area where picture will go unpainted. Add a layer of glitter paint to canvas. Sprinkle a thin layer of glitter on top of paints and shake off excess. Allow to dry.

3. Dab the silver paint dabber on the flourish stamp to stamp around edges of frame.

4. Place Fabric fusion glue in four corners of your printed image and adhere carefully to canvas. Run a thin layer of Fabric fusion along the edges of your picture and add fabric trim. Cut off edges as you work to frame the picture.

5. Create a fabric bow and use Liquid Fusion to adhere a decorative element to it. Allow to dry. I had an overnight marcasite show at QVC on Sunday and spent the better part of the day catching up on my sleep. I usually post these links on Saturday...but here it is Monday. How does that happen?!

I wanted to take a moment to articulate something I think needs articulation. As a professional designer in the craft industry who has published 6 books, edited a magazine, consulted, designed and blogged for some of the biggest companies in the DIY market, created and tirelessly promoted this blog and worked her tushie off for years to build and promote her brand through extensive viral marketing efforts...to say that this has all happened through copious amounts of blood, sweat and tears is not an understatement. I am a well known and well respected designer in my industry and that has happened entirely through my hard work and through the connections I've made and the networking I've done with other hard working designers. There is no such thing as a free lunch. When companies send me samples to use for my classes, my books, my articles, my blog, my videos and my design work, these samples are sent with the understanding that I will honestly assess the products and use them as I see fit in my work. They aren't just 'free samples' that I can give away to friends and family or sell in my Etsy shop. They are tools for my work that I've earned through my tireless efforts at creating this brand.

I have recently had a few instances of people assuming that I can sell them my 'free samples' or just give them away. I can not. That would be bad form on my part, it would be a form of theft on my part and quite frankly I find the audacity of the assumption that I can give away tools for my work to virtual strangers absolutely mind boggling. I don't even want to sell them, I need to use them! The next person who asks is in for an earful...so be forewarned.

Enough said.

On a more positive note...

Check out this week's video from When Creativity Knocks!

Here's some inspiration from the crafty bloggers for your holiday craftertainment:

The Artful Crafter A bead spinner is not required, but certainly recommended, to make a beautiful seed bead Christmas tree like this one created by Sharon

Stefanie Girard's Sweater Surgery See how to make a Max from the Grinch antler headband from recycled sweaters

Mixed Media Artist One of Cyndi's readers shared a fabulous craft idea using her own custom-printed fabric...and you can do it too!

Farm Girl Roots, City Girl Style Linda built a house--a gingerbread house, that is! I love research and I'm fascinated by mythology and story telling. It's so interesting to me to dig deep and discover the underlying stories behind our Christmas traditions. So without further ado, welcome to my first Fun Fact Friday post of the holiday season. If you're a mixed media artist...these little fun facts and the images/motifs they evoke just might give you some fresh ideas for your work...

Holiday Fun (mostly) Fact Friday
Santa Claus...Who the Heck Are You?
Copyright Margot Potter

So, Santa Claus...who the heck are you and why do you give us presents, hmmm?! Not that we mind, oh no, keep 'em coming please! It's just...we wanna know more about you. You're so mysterious.

Santa Claus, jolly old elf that he is, is an amalgam of figures and legends mostly European in origin. They can be traced back to a host of gift bearing Pagan figures such as la Befana (a friendly witchy female creature who enters houses with gifts through the chimney), the Yule Goat, Berchta, Olentzero and Julemanden among many others. These figures were combined with that of St. Nicolas, whose legends included bringing gifts to children. His holiday was on December 6, with the celebration of the birth of the Christ child being placed on the 25th of December. See how this is all coming together here, the newly Christianized holiday season and the proponderence of similar gift giving myths and stories...hmmm? As the church began to doubt the validity of the stories of St. Nicolas, they began to heavily promote the later holiday, but the traditions surrounding St. Nicolas remained popular and shifted to this new date.

The invisible Christ Child or Christkindlien was the central figure in many of the German Christ’s Mass (Christmas) stories and he was traditionally accompanied by a fur robed helper such as Belznikel or Pere Noel. Knecht Ruprecht, Belznikel or Pelznikel as the Pennsylvania Dutch referred to him was a rather scary visitor, who arrived on Christmas Eve when the children were still awake to frighten them and punish them for being bad with lumps of coal and switches for their stockings. The gifts arrived the following morning delivered by the invisible Christkindlien. In some European legends Santa had an elf helper named Black Peter (or the even more sinister and scary Krampus) whose job it was to whip the naughty children...egads!

Over time the more visible helpmate figures overshadowed the invisible Baby Jesus with the name Christkind shifting to the now familiar Kris Kringle or Santa Claus (from Sinterklaas the Dutch name for St. Nicolas.) Many of the legends that surround Santa Claus as we know him can be traced back to the writer Washington Irving, who combined Dutch traditions, rhymes and stories to create the figure of a gift giving, sleigh riding, robe wearing holiday staple. Clement Moore further developed the Santa Claus story borrowing la Befana’s chimney antics and creating the eight tiny reindeer we all know and love. Santa at this point was tiny in size, but he grew in both popularity and stature as illustrators, writers and advertisers fine tuned his appearance until he morphed slowly into the roly poly, jolly figure in red and white by the 1920s, bolstered further and solidified by the advertising images of the Coca Cola Company.

Most of the enduring and endearing legends we associate with Santa are the product of the vivid and glorious imagination of writers and illustrators. He’s a combo platter if you will and like most extraordinary mythological figures he’s far greater than the sum of his parts. I like to think of him as a super hero, one of very few left for kids to look up to, and the spirit of giving, love, laughter and joy that he imparts is the true gift we carry in our hearts for a lifetime. In my mind, nothing quite compares to the look in a child’s eyes as they turn the corner and see the gifts piled under the tree. It’s...well...what Christmas is all about. Whether you celebrate it or not, you can probably appreciate the sentiment attached to it. If you can seek that feeling out in your heart, just once a year, share that with others...give them a taste of that magic...that’s some serious good stuff!

(Sources for this Santa blogtorial include: www.snopes.com, Wikidpedia, geocities.com/~perkinshome/santa)

Cheers,
Madge

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://margotpottertheimpatientcrafter.blogspot.com/2009/12/holiday-fun-mostly-facts-with-madge.html' title='Holiday Fun (mostly) Facts with Madge! Those of you who follow my work know that I can't stop using my flourish stamp from Inkadinkado and these holiday stamps are sure to become regulars in my work too. The detail on them is AMAZING.

I began by stamping the reindeer clear stamp using jet black archival ink on a nice heavy weight cardstock in a fuchsia pink. (You could use this same idea on tissue or lighter weight paper to make some stunning wrapping paper and then whip up tags with cardstock to match!) I punched out the 2" circles and added accents of silver paint dabber with my favorite flourish and a writing stamp. I like to use stamps as textural elements so I'm not going for neatness on the accent stamps. Let the paint dry before the next step. I painted on some of Traci Bautista's Collage Pauge in Sparkle (just the right amount of glitter) and let it dry and then painted a second coat. I used a paintbrush because I like texture, but you can use a foam brush if you prefer a more even coat. I stuck them back to back with two sided tape runner tape and punched a hole in the top of each one. Then I attached to some of my fav Beadalon Quick Links chain with an array of CRYSTALLIZED-Swarovski Elements bicones (EK Success Jolee's Jewels has a great selection) and vintage beads.

.
This is a one of a kind design, the black glass flower beads are vintage and a gift from a friend. I hand picked the striated pink beads from dusty bins of beads at the Paris Flea Market. Luckily I had two larger pink beads to make some swingy earrings.

I think this design definitely fits into my Retrofabulous Christmas craft theme with the pink, black and silver color palette and the swingy circle motif. Therefore it's officially named Retrofabulous Holiday Necklace.

And to think it all starting with one simply divine stamp...

I'm thinking of selling this confection in my Etsy Shoppe...I may need to wear it out first for a test run. But if you're looking for some truly unique vintage beads and findings and one of a kind Madgecentric mixed media creations you really should check my shop out. I'm hoping to get some more retrofabulous goodies in there soon!

xoxo
Madge

Retrofabulous Christmas Craftabration Project #1! There are so many fabulous ideas and so many hilariously kitschy concepts I can’t stop staring at them and making my poor husband look too. OH MY GOD! Look at this one! Hahahah! Wait...look at this one! No, no...this one! Hahahaha! Insert husband eye roll here...

Here’s an ab fab project from a Family Circle publication called Christmas Helps circa 1967. There are a ton of great ideas on this two page mixed media jewelry spread and I promise to share them here soon. This delightful concoction is whipped up with pipe cleaners wrapped with yarn to make some marvelously mod jewelry. I did a more traditional Christmas themed take on the concept with a wired tinsel yarn, a vintage miniature wooden accent and some sparkly CRYSTALLIZED™-Swarovski Elements. You can find tiny holiday themed items at your local craft store and any beads or buttons or sequins will work here. Liquid Fusion helps secure things together.

(I have a huge yarn stash with some wildly fun fibers. Think of all of the funky things you could make with a wire base wrapped with yarn! I’d love to do a big bib style necklace of connected yarn circles...which is exactly the sort of kooky thing I’d make and never be able to sell for publication. Am I the only gal who likes oversized kitschy jewelry?!)

Tiny Tinsel Wreath Pin
Free Retro Holiday Craft Project
Copyright Margot Potter the The Impatient Crafter™

Materials
Wired tinsel
Miniature holiday accent item (vintage or new)
Crystals, sequins, buttons or other tiny trim
26 gauge Beadalon German Style Wire
Small metal pin back
Liquid Fusion Glue

1. Create a 1.5” circle with your wired tinsel, wrapping one wire end around the end of the circle and continuing to wrap tinsel around the base until you’ve wrapped the entire base. Tuck the wire under after cutting off any excess.

2. Use 26 gauge German style wire to wrap crystals around the tinsel wreath, don’t overdo it or you lose the dimension of your tinsel. When you get to the bottom left side add some Liquid Fusion Glue and wire on your tiny accent element. Finish wrapping crystals and tuck wire into the base after clipping off excess.

3. Use tinsel wire to attach a pin back to the upper back of the wreath after adding some Liquid Fusion glue to secure it.

4. You can make several of these wreaths without the pin backs and do a jaunty necklace or add these to a barrette for a holiday hair accent...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://margotpottertheimpatientcrafter.blogspot.com/2009/12/retrofabulous-christmas-craftabration.html' title='Retrofabulous Christmas Craftabration Project #1! Rather than spend beaucoup bucks on new cards, why not upcycle some oldies but goodies? I have a collection of fun vintage cards, but many of them are already used. I love repurposing them in my design work. (You don’t have to use vintage cards, any used holiday cards will do.) You need cards with figural images you can frame with dimensional paint and then cut out in silhouette. It’s easy to give old cards new life with Tulip dimensional paints and glitters! Teens will love this project and it’s a great way to get them excited about upcycling and handmade holidays. Miss Avalon just loved this snowman.

Gather up dimensional paints and glitters and make an afternoon out of creating your own wonderful, heartfelt and handcrafted creations with your teen.

Materials
Used holiday cards with bold figural images
Heavy duty cardstock
Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint in silver
Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint with silver glitter
Tulip Fashion Glitter in White Pearl
Ranger Adirondack Pigment stamp pad in snow cap
Small clear snowflake stamp (I used a clear stamp from Inkadinado for EK Success)
Clear stamp base
Scissors
Bone Folder
Paper cutter
Ruler

1. Select a card with a figural image. Select areas you’d like to glitter and spread Tulip dimensional glitter paint thinly across areas with fingertips. Before it dries, sprinkle with Tulip Fashion glitter and shake off excess on scrap paper. Bend paper and dump any excess glitter back into jar.

2. Use Tulip dimensional fabric paint in silver to frame your image. I was envisioning a soldered effect here. Allow card to dry.

3. Cut out figure with scissors.

4. Use a ruler to measure a card background that fits your image with a little excess around the edges. Each card will be unique to the image you select. Cut with a paper cutter or scissors, fold in half and use a bone folder to get a clean crease on the edge of your card.

5. Stamp front of card with pigment pad and snowflake stamp in a repetitive pattern. Before the pigment dries sprinkle a layer of Tulip Fashion Glitter on and shake off on to scrap paper. Dump excess glitter back into jar. Allow to dry.

6. Use foam stickers to attach your image to the front of the card. Cut out and attach the sentiment from the original card inside of your creation.

BONUS IDEA: Take the image off of the foam stickers, punch holes on both sides at the top and add some tinsel wire and VOILA instant Christmas decoration!

Disclosure: Most of the materials used in this project were donated for use in my work.

I Got a Virus...Yay.

When they say, "You get what you pay for", they've got a good point. Take that, holly haters! I love it because it is for those of us who miss the light this time of year, a way to bring the light inside of our homes, deck our halls, celebrate the joy of giving, sharing, laughing and loving. It's a magical time, if we allow it to be. It is like all things in life all about perspective. It isn't about the race for the cheapest DVD Player or the newest gadgets or games, it's about family and friends. Honestly I've been chomping at the bit here this year. I'm so excited and I just can't hide it! Bring on the glitter, break out the glue guns, tinsel me up, baby!

I had a few not so fabulous Christmas experiences way back when and for many years it tainted things for me. I felt the holidays approaching and immediately started feeling stressed out and sad and disappointed in advance. We put a lot of pressure on these few days to make us happy. It's rather silly really. Happiness isn't an involuntary response to external stimuli, happiness is a conscious choice.

I dreaded Christmas for years and then I had a kid and she reminded me that it was about being in the moment so fully and completely that we couldn't help but choose joy...and that we could be sad too, but we didn't have to get stuck there. She helped me rediscover the wonder of the season. She helped me rediscover the magic of believing. She showed me the Zen of Christmas.

I choose not to get caught up in the buying of crap that people don't need. I choose not to feel pressured. I choose not to be sad about the disappointments of Christmas past. I choose to focus on the joy. The best gifts don't come in packages, they come from the heart.

I have recently acquired 16 sensational 1960s craft magazines. I am going to share with you over the next few weeks my version of some of the projects and remind you that a handmade gift can be ten times cooler than some random obligatory thing picked up on sale at the mall. Take a moment to visit some of the blogs of these wonderful artists! Just follow the link!

I don't believe in luck, but I do believe in magic. I think luck is something people invented so they'd stop taking responsibility for their lives, it's much easier to tell ourselves that happy people are lucky than it is to accept that life is about choices. There is preparation and there is opportunity, luck is an illusion. Life is all about perspective. Every moment we can choose sorrow or we can choose joy. I believe that in each of us is an endless well of joy. You can keep tapping it over and over again and you will never run out. The glass is neither half full nor half empty, because the universe gives free refills.

Seriously.

Why are you even worried about the glass?

The more we focus on what we don't have and we didn't get, the less we are able see the abundance that is always there for us. At any moment we are free to erase the past and reinvent ourselves. We're only a victim if we choose to be. I choose joy. When we choose joy, the magic happens.

Life is not about the money or the stuff or the awards or the accolades, though all of those things are nice and it's okay to enjoy them fully. Life is all about the love we share and just like joy there's an endless supply.

I am thankful that somewhere along the way I realized that I was the captain of my own ship. I realized that I could take the wheel. I could choose to be sad about the things that happened in the past or I could focus on the moment. Every moment is an opportunity for joy and for grace and for love.

Thank each of you for visiting me here at this little blog of mine. Here is my advice, for what it's worth: Try to love more and judge less...that applies to you, your friends, your enemies, complete strangers...and to your artwork. Love is the key to joy.

Be in the moment, it is all you have.

Carpe Gaudium.

Seize joy.

Love,
Madge

PS: I'll be on QVC this morning at 11am EST with two fun items! Much of my collections have been pared down due to the lack of storage here at our little school house and my many moves. The one collection I can keep expanding and justify for my work is my ephemera. That’s a fancy word for vintage paper. I just scored a little stash of 1950s era Christmas cards and I knew I had to use them for an iLoveToCreate project. (Truth be told these aren’t much older than me...which of course makes me vintage but I’m in denial.)

This frame cost a buck and the rest of the supplies are very affordable. You can find lots of vintage cards on Etsy or eBay. They’re super cheap and super fun for your artwork. My daughter finally fessed up to knowing the 411 on the jolly old elf, but we’ve known for a while she had it figured out. I just wanted to keep that Christmas magic alive as long as possible. This is a great holiday pic of Avalon from a few years back and I thought it could make a terrific gift for one of her Grandmothers or for us to use in our regular holiday décor. Teens can have a lot of fun with this project, and they get to enjoy a little bit of Christmas past if you use vintage cards. (Note: Don’t scan and copy the images from the cards and use them again, these images are under copyright. You can cut them out and use the physical card, but you can not reproduce the images. US copyright protection lasts 100 years.)

Materials
One wooden frame with heart shaped opening
Wired tinsel
Image from vintage greeting card
Text from vintage greeting card
Green cardstock
Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue
Aleene’s Liquid Fusion
Crafty Chica Little Paints White
Tulip Fashion Glitter White Pearl
Archival ink jet black
Adirondack ink red pepper
EK Success clear snowflake stamp
Inkadinkado flourish stamp
Dimensional foam stickers
EK Success metallic writer pen in silver

Tools
Martha Stewart lace edge punch
Scissors
Paper cutter
Tracing pen or pencil
Paint brush

1. Paint frame white. Sprinkle a fine layer of glitter over paint. Shake off excess. Allow to dry.

2. Randomly stamp snowflake over frame (try not to overlap) using archival ink in jet black.

3. Randomly stamp flourish over frame (try not to overlap) using Adirondack ink in red pepper.

4. Select image you like for bottom right corner of frame and cut it out. Use writer pen in silver to accent parts of image.

5. Spread a thin layer of glue on parts of image you’d like to coat with clear glitter. Sprinkle glitter on image and shake off excess. Allow to dry.

6. Cut out words you want to use. Using cardstock make a frame for the words. Use the scallop edge punch to decorate the edges of your frame. Adhere words to paper frame using two dimensional foam stickers.

7. Run a thick bead of Liquid Fusion along edge of frame. Place tinsel on edge, cut off excess. You can put some small glue bottles on the tinsel to secure it while it dries.

8. Adhere Santa to bottom right of frame using dimensional foam dots with a layer of Liquid Fusion under them.

9. Bend one end of your wire with pliers to create a small stand that fits inside of your pot.
4. Use round nose pliers to start a flat wire coil and continue using nylon jaw pliers. Make this a loose rather than tight coil.
5. Cut off a 10” length of raffia.
6. Hot glue your wire base into the pot, add a small glass pebble and more glue and your raffia. Allow glue to dry.
7. You can use “glue dots” to secure these on the table and prevent them from tipping over. Add your own festive place cards. I use a fabulous Fiskars squeeze punch to get this scalloped edge square shape on cardstock.

TastyLinks Saturday Giving Thanks Edition

I was thinking about the word Thanksgiving and it occured to me that it's an interesting compound. There's the 'thanks' part and the 'giving' part, obviously. What's interesting is the order of the words and also if you think further the words themselves, and whilst contemplating these things I had a small epiphany. One can give thanks figuratively, but one can also literally give...give something freely as a way of spreading our 'thanks' or gratitude to others. So today in gratitude for your support, I'm sharing with you a permission free image from my personal collection. This is a vintage Clapsaddle postcard, this particular postcard line is highly collectible. I have been collecting ephemera for many years and I find it endlessly fascinating. It never ceases to amaze me to hold a piece of vintage paper in my hands and think about the people who held it 100 years ago. This is a postcard sent in 1910 from Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Davis of Minneapolis to Miss Elsie Munson of Minneapolis. It's in excellent conditon and is embossed and artist signed. You are free to use this image in your design work. On a side note, I had to wonder if this turkey is really all that glad for Thanksgiving...what since he's probably the main course.

FYI-not all of the images on this blog are free for the taking, but this one is. Remember if you do click and save my blog images that they are all under my copyright or the copyright of the artist I've attributed. Everything on the internet isn't free...but this lovely postcard is!

This is part of my contribution to the blog round robin in which I'm participating this week. We hope you find something that inspires you, sparks your creativity, or reminds you to be thankful this Thanksgiving.

From our house to yours, please enjoy your week and our gratitude...

Debbie Hodge

Kelly Purkey

Lisa Dickinson

May Flaum

Patti Milazzo

Stacey Kingman

Stephenie Hamen

Margot Potter

Lain Ehmann

Margie Romney-Aslett

Rhonna Farrer

Wendy Smedley

Jodie McNally

Liz Hicks

Becky Novacek

Jennifer McGuire

Allison Kreft Abad

Up, Up and Away!

Image Copyright Devorss

I'm out of the studio until Friday, so there won't be any new blog posts until then. I was thinking about fall friendly jewelry for teens and this idea popped into my head. I love the unexpected addition of soft blue with the traditional fall colors. You could easily make this same idea in other color palettes, but I really liked these earthy tones. My daughter Avalon thought this was super cool, and I trust her sense of teen style implicitly. Repeat for all three pendants.
Cut out papers. Spread a thin layer of Collage Pauge on pendants and adhere paper. Gently press on the back to remove any air bubbles. Paint collage pauge on back of tile. Allow this to dry for several hours.

Mix a small amount of red and a much larger amount of yellow Crafty Chica paints to create a warm pumpkin orange. Stamp into paint and stamp flourish on edges of your pendants. Allow to dry.

Attach an orange flower and a blue bead on to the top left corner of the largest pendant using Liquid Fusion. Allow to dry.

Create coil topped dangles for your blue and green round beads. Thread a blue bead, a flower and a green leaf on a head pin, then coil the back and bend it flush to the back of the leaf to create a small pendant for the back of your chain. (See this video for a quick and easy head pin coiling how to!)

Attach the largest pendant to the center of an 18” length of rolo chain using a 10mm jump ring. Move over 4 links and begin to attach elements on every other link using 6mm jump rings for beads and leaves and 10mm jump rings for the pendants, make sure they’re all falling to the bottom of your chain. The pattern on both sides is: orange leaf, green bead, green leaf with blue bead, green bead, orange leaf, pendant and the same pattern established in the first section of beads and leaves. (For a quick and easy tutorial on opening and closing jump rings see this video how to!)

Attach a lobster clasp to one end of your chain using a 6mm jump ring. Attach the flower pendant you created to the opposite end using a 6mm jump ring.

(Most of the products used in this design were donated for promotional purposes with the exception of the scrapbook paper and the rubber stamp.)

I Schmoozed with Suze!

Kecia Frazee Deveney, Suze Weinberg and Me!
Sally Lynn McDonald was a delight as were all of my wonderful students! The lovely lady in Black and White is Sallianne McClelland of Art is You Retreat, I loved her Victorian take on the concept!

Yesterday Drew and I drove to Tinton Falls, New Jersey for my class at Suze Weinberg's studio. Suze is an amazing woman with an endless reserve of energy and creativity. I think she's the bee's knees!

I realized after arrival that the medium I'd planned to use to stabilize the magazine images was not going to cut with the punches I brought, so there was a last minute quick trip to the craft store. Oh and being the amazingly anal retentive and organized person I am, I also forgot to pack the clasps. Doh. This is why it's best to make up kits, which I usually do but last week got away from me. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Yet another example of why I need a personal assistant or team of magical helpers...who are willing to work for glitter and beads! Luckily the students were fine with cutting the shapes with scissors and I was able to pick up clasps, so all's well that ends well. Everyone had a great time and they all personalized their designs, which made me really happy. I love to see people take an idea and make it their own.

It was a lot of driving and I was feeling a little under the weather...today I'm not 100%...and MY ARM still hurts from the incident with the grumpy phlebotomist. What the h-e-double hockey sticks did she do to me?! My gut reaction is to go toss a rubber biscuit at her head, but my mature side feels a formal complaint is a better pathway to resolution. Though the rubber biscuit would be far more satisfying.

I'll be here tomorrow with a new free Teen Craft project for iLoveToCreate and then I'm off to New Mexico to shoot my PBS segments. Until next time...craft on with your bad selves!

xoxo
Madge

TastyLinks Saturday!

I'm heading to New Jersey to teach a mixed media jewelry class tomorrow at Suze Weinberg's studio. This is the project which I've shared here before. It's a recycled fashion magazine necklace with sealed paper charms layered with inks and paints. You can use any sort of paper that catches your eye and you can of course make this in a smaller scale if you prefer or use different shapes. I've been obsessed with paper jewelry for several years now and I imagine that obsession will continue!

Here are your weekly crafty links. I'm sad to report that the aforementioned grumpy phlebotomist actually injured my arm with the rubber tie, I don't know what the heck she did but it still burns. I'm officially registering a complaint. I don't allow people to abuse me. Period. So there.

Enough about that for now, I'll be back next week with more fun filled ideas! It makes sense since I'm a crafty gal to be selling novelties and toys, so it's a good fit. Plus I'm a big kid at heart and now that my kid is getting bigger, I'll still have an excuse to have toys around. And yes, I still get as excited about them as I did when I was five. This is the second time I've met up with a grumpy phlebotomist. Though I understand that it stinks to be overworked, underpaid and understaffed...I'm just a gal who hates needles and has to get this dang test done for my doctor. I don't really want to hear about how much your job sucks the entire time I'm giving you my blood and I really don't want to be jabbed extra hard with a huge needle merely because you're disgruntled. Is it just me?

Aren't you all glad I've blathered on about how much my blood tests sucked? Just be glad I don't have a needle...I'm just sayin'...

I promised to announce the winner of the Totally Creative subscription! Erin Prais-Hintz of Tesori Trovati...email me and I'll connect you with the folks from the e-zine! This design uses some of my favorite Green Girl Studios coins, a netsuke mermaid, an antique chinese coin, a tiny glass vial with Art Glitter Institute glitter, Beadalon polyester chain, Thai hill tribe gold plated pendants and CRYSTALLIZED-Swarovski Elements in ocean themed colors all suspended from a lovely antique brass hammered chain. I added little wire mesh elements to mimic seaweed. The story is that this mermaid has collected a little treasure trove of items from the ocean floor she finds intriguing. I had the pendant for several years in my stash and was really happy to find a home for it.

If you love fantasy and magic, you'll love this book. If you love narrative design, you'll love this book. If you're looking for new tricks for your mixed media skill set, you'll love this book. It's beautiful, engaging and thoughtfully written. Cynthia's delightful illustrations are scattered throughout the pages of the book along with her extraordinary designs, a fairy tale and lots of great tips for the mixed media artist. Metal clay, polymer clay, mold making...there's so much here to explore.

I believe there is a palpable magic in the power of creativity and the Thornton clan seems to be particularly in tune with it. I highly, highly recommend this book for every jewelry designer's library. It truly is enchanting.

iLoveToCreate Teen Room Decor: Patchwork Paper Wall Letters

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 94px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Sj2CPzOoMzQ/SvmurpjLsbI/AAAAAAAAEwo/GYSBJxMj3YI/s400/margot-potter-blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402541292918649266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 296px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Sj2CPzOoMzQ/SvmunrSutJI/AAAAAAAAEwg/dVjByGBfB7w/s400/Patchwork+Letters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402541224667034770" />

iLoveToCreate Teen Room Décor
Mixed Media Patchwork Paper Wall Letters
Margot Potter Teen Crafts
“Mom crafted, teen approved.”

Teens love to personalize their rooms and this is a fun and easy way to do that in a flash. You can make an entire word to fill a wall or just an initial like I’ve done here for a door. I really fell for these retro themed papers, but you can use any papers you like including recycled scrap stash papers, wrapping paper and magazine pages. You don’t have to save this idea just for your teen’s room; these would be adorable anywhere in your home. I love the idea of seasonally themed words done in this patchwork style. Avalon squealed when she saw this, so I'm pretty sure it’s a winner!

Materials
Wood letter or letters
K&Company Carolyn Gavin Scrapbook paper (or other paper of your choice)
Liquid Fusion Glue
Traci Bautista’s Collage Pauge medium in matte finish
Vintage or new coordinating button
Tulip clear crystal to fit inside of button
Wired tinsel

Tools
Paint brush
Scissors
Exacto knife
Pencil

1. Select your papers. Place your letter on the paper, hold it down firmly, trace and cut with your Exacto knife. (If there’s a little overlap you can trim it later.)

2. Cut the accent papers (I made a small border with a coordinating paper and cut out a coordinating paper flower.)

3. Adhere the papers using an even coat of decoupage medium and paint a coat of medium on top. I love using a brush because it gives you texture, but you can opt for a foam brush if you prefer. If you get bubbles, wet your fingers and gently work them out. (Don’t fret, they will deflate when the medium dries. I promise!) Allow medium to dry.

4. Paint a second coat of decoupage medium over surface and allow to dry.

5. Run a thick bead of Liquid Fusion along the edge of the letter and above your borders and adhere the tinsel wire. IMPORTANT: Do not smash the wire into the glue or it will flatten and lose its dimension and sparkle. Just gently lay it into the glue bead. For the longer pieces you can place something small (like small glue bottles) on each end and the center until they’ve tacked into place and then remove them and allow the tinsel to dry overnight. This is kind of like using hot glue without worrying about the heat melting the tinsel or burning your fingers.

6. Attach a button to the center of your flower using Liquid Fusion. Attach a Tulip crystal to the center of the button with Liquid Fusion. Allow to dry.

Short and Sweet

I'm late, I'm late for a very important date...

The fab folks from The Beadin' Path just sent me a YUMMY stash of autumnally appropos lucite beads.
