That style of dance, Casino Rueda or Salsa Rueda, is punctuated by a round style of dancing salsa. <br /><br /><br />Developed in Havana, Cuba in early 1960’s, this style of dance pairs dancers in a circle where one<a href="http://www.salsarueda.com/rueda/rueda_calls.html"> person calls out the moves</a> for the group to perform. Many “callers” develop an extensive array of hand signs to complement each call and easily lead the group in the various turns. There is even <a href="http://www.ruedasandiego.com/moves.html">swapping of partners</a> as you can see in this Salsa Rueda video I posted.<br /><br /><br />Locally here in San Diego there are a number of groups that cater to the Casino Rueda or Salsa Rueda Style. They include <a href="http://www.ruedasandiego.com">Rueda San Diego</a> out of the North County. They offer classes and more information for those interested.<br /><br />In the past I tried learning Salsa Rueda and found that it takes just as much if not more dedication to perfecting that style of dance. If you undertake to learn the dance make sure you find a group of Salsa Rueda dancers that can teach you the calls and moves. That way, the next time you see Salsa Rueda at the club you may just be able to jump in and join them.<br /></p></div>John ;-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/08210866354129390018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7598528139420840944.post-80584141507291309782008-05-02T15:26:00.000-07:002008-05-02T15:55:36.471-07:00Grand Opening of New San Diego Salsa Club: Abran Paso<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_AFvgEIH-t2E/SBuay0zdfhI/AAAAAAAAAWo/bZznzxvAbE0/s1600-h/valerie_david_2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_AFvgEIH-t2E/SBuay0zdfhI/AAAAAAAAAWo/bZznzxvAbE0/s200/valerie_david_2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195916793060621842" border="0" /></a><br />Ready to try a new salsa dance venue for Friday nights?<br /><br />The Grand opening of San Diego's newest Salsa club is set for Friday May 9th!! As you see below in a recent interview, Sakara Dance Company presents a different vision for other dance companies to follow.<br /><div><br />_______________<br /><br /></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;">Sakara: </span> John, first <a href="http://www.sakara.us/">Sakara Dance Company</a> (Choreographers - Violeta Anderson and Lesley Washington) would like to say thank-you for this interview opportunity to share our thoughts and ideas toward a passion we love, <em>"The Fluidity and Body Movement of Dance!"<br /><br /></em></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);">Ritmo Bello:</span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"> </span> What is your Mission and Vision for your dance company?<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;">Sakara:<span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></span><strong><u><br />Mission Statement:</u></strong> The mission for Sakara Dance Company is to utilize the art of dance to express personal emotion, opinions and a love for movement by stepping outside of the numeric cadence of dancing salsa. <em> </em>As artistic directors for Sakara Dance Company Lesley Washington and Violeta Anderson will continue to challenge not only our bodies, but our minds, rhythmically in choreography and social dancing. We choose to take a simple eight count of music and physically attempt to use as much organic body opposition as possible. <p> </p> <p><strong><u>Vision Statement</u></strong>: Sakara will constantly challenge and develop our troupe to have a technically solid foundation and become overall "students of all dance forms" that extends beyond salsa dancing. Our number one belief for the Sakara Dance Troupe is: "The ever evolving fluidity and transition of movement" where challenge and hard work is the key to success!. Sakara Dance Company will offer dance education to people of all abilities from amateur to professional. If you can feel the emotion, you can express it through this art form. <span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">As a result of the Company's performances, and the artistic vision and direction that serve as its foundation, Sakara strives to both preserve and continually contribute to the body of work in this art form.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;" align="left"><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255); font-weight: bold;">Ritmo Bello: </span> What are the origins of your dance troupe?</p><p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;" align="left"><br /></p> <p><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sakara:</span> </span> The <strong><u>Origins of our dance troupe</u></strong> come from our African roots, in addition to a ballet, modern and jazz foundation. <em>'Sakkara'</em> is best known for the Step Pyramid, the oldest known of Egypt 's 97 pyramids. It was built for King Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty by the architect and genius Imhotep, who designed it and its surrounding complex to be as grand as it was unique and revolutionary. The Sakara dance troupe's main focus is about building your foundation based on the many unique levels/steps of all dance forms, to become grand and revolutionary dancers. We have had extensive experience in various types of dance, with the opportunity to work with one of the top choreographers in the world Seaon "Stylist" Dance Company as part of his core traveling performers. </p> <p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255); font-weight: bold;">Ritmo Bello: </span><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">What sets your group apart from the other local dance troupes?<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Sakara:</span> </span> Our group is set apart from the other local dance troupes by a few distinct characteristics. Our commitment to the technical growth and development of our dancer's first, before teaching them a choreography and putting them on stage. We base our foundation on the principles of dancing on2, New York style salsa, and have danced with the Seaon Stylist Dance Company, choreographed by Seaon Bristol, who was one of the former Eddie Torres dancers. Not only did we learn Seaon's intricate body movements, styling, traveled around the world teaching his male and female technique, and performed some of the most memorable salsa routines ever, but, we have further evolved and pushed ourselves to do more with our salsa dancing. As choreographers we are well versed in other forms of dance (jazz, ballet, contemporary modern, various African forms, and funk) that we can effortlessly challenge our bodies to do more than ever before. Sakara is also set apart from the other groups by staying neutral in the salsa scene. </span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">We have no allegiance to anyone but to ourselves. Sakara will work, create choreograph for individuals, couples or teams, and collaborate with any and everyone when time, communication and organization are effortless. Many people remark that their night of dancing was akin to a full vigorous workout they might have at the local gym.<br /><br />Seems there is some truth to this comparison. I did some research on the subject and found this interesting article written by <a href="http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/05/11/02/the_health_benefits_of_dancing_--_including_specific_benefits_of_different_dances.htm"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">SixWise</span>.com</a>. The article identifies that social salsa dancing has a number of health benefits ranging from a reduction in stress, increased energy, improved strength, increased muscle tone, and of course increased coordination. One seemingly obvious benefit that comes from social salsa dance is the very fact that you can experience all these health benefits while still being able to maintain social interaction with others. When I go to the gym I notice that most people who work out are running around with headphones on and generally are keeping to themselves. Not so with salsa dancing.<br /><br />The other point that caught my eyes from the article deals with the burning of calories possible from social salsa dancing. Specifically, it outlined how different types of social dances stack up in their calorie burning potential:<blockquote><p>How many calories will you burn while dancing? That depends on the type of dancing. Here's a range of some of the most popular varieties, based on a 150-pound person, per hour:</p> <ul><li>Swing dancing: 235 calories/hour</li><li>Ballroom dancing: 265 </li><li>Square dancing: 280 </li><li>Ballet: 300</li><li>Belly dancing: 380</li><li>Salsa dancing: 420+ </li><li>Aerobic dancing: 540+ </li></ul></blockquote>Remember that salsa dancing is not just fun but is beneficial to a balanced life.<br /><br /><a href="http://salsa.meetup.com/150/">See you all on the dance floor!!!</a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.sandiegosalsadancing.com/">John ;-)</a><br /><a href="http://www.sandiegosalsadancing.com/"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Ritmo</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Bello</span></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: right;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.sandiegosalsadancing.com"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 115px; height: 66px;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_AFvgEIH-t2E/SAwcdWTFJyI/AAAAAAAAAWY/RIPCMGzseLk/s200/jb_logo.bmp" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191555760978732834" border="0" /></a></div>John ;-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/08210866354129390018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7598528139420840944.post-11293722293464309472008-04-17T22:24:00.000-07:002008-04-17T23:01:51.235-07:00Salsa and Latin Dance Meetups Around the World!!!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://salsa.meetup.com/150/"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 98px; height: 66px;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_AFvgEIH-t2E/SAg3IsPs0OI/AAAAAAAAAVA/TXaMCoHgrVs/s400/meetup_logo_24.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190459192999989474" border="0" /></a><br />Okay, so I finally got around to updating the links section on <a href="http://www.sandiegosalsadancing.com/"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Ritmo</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Bello</span></a> to include a special section regarding Salsa and Latin Dancing <a href="http://salsa.meetup.com/all/"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">meetup</span> groups around the world</a>. If you look at the list you'll notice there are <a href="http://www.meetup.com/tour/"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">meetups</span></a> from various locations in the United States and some that are international as well.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://salsa.meetup.com/150/"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_AFvgEIH-t2E/SAg3kMPs0PI/AAAAAAAAAVI/2cmed6bsgjc/s400/meetup_logo_17.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190459665446392050" border="0" /></a><br /><br />What's interesting about each of these groups is the way each <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Meetup</span> group is a reflection of the local salsa and dance community that it serves. You'll notice, for example, that certain regions have more than one Salsa <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Meetup</span> group as they focus on specific areas within a geographic location. Many people decide to go the route of joining a <a href="http://www.majestyinmotion.com/">competitive group</a> for a number of reasons.<br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">Some salsa dancers do so out of pleasure while others for promotion of their particular style of dance. Others also do it for the financial gains that are possible through exposure at different competitions. Although I myself have never been a part of a salsa dance troupe (For me its all about the social dancing), I know that locally here in San Diego there are many different types of studios and approaches available for someone interested in joining such a salsa group. <br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"><br /></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">Here are some tips and issues to consider if you decide to pursue life as a salsa dance troupe member:<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">1)</span><span style=""> </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">What's your Reason for Joining? </span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">I think it is smart to ask this before you pursue joining a salsa dance troupe. Of course there is the possibility of extreme enjoyment taken from the show aspect of competitions. Talking with different dance troupe members through the years and seeing them in action, it is easy to see that there is some attraction to being viewed by others as the "top salsa dancers." Some people though have pointed out that joining a salsa dance troupe affords the incredible opportunity to improve your repertoire of dancing moves. This makes sense when you take into consideration that you will be exposed to other great dancers and taught a routine that really showcases some great moves that you otherwise would not learn.<b><br /></b></p><br /><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> 2)</span><span style=""> </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Do you have a salsa dance partner?</span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">Most people end up joining existing dance troupes and are basically placed or assigned to work with a particular partner.<br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">If you already have a set partner though it is important that you both have the same purpose and understanding of the work involved. Taking on a competition seriously requires hours of preparation and practice. It is frustrating to one partner if the other is not as committed.<br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">If you don’t yet have a partner and need to find someone, try to find a dancer who complements your level and style. I think the ideal situation is to find someone who is relatively at your same level of dance and that will be able to grow with you in your dancing abilities.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> 3)</span><span style=""> </span><span style="font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: bold;">C</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">horeography</span>: </span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">I know many groups focus on a theme for their dances, with some taking movie themes or other familiar motifs to brand their dancing. What I think is more important, though, is the actual movements and how the team works together as a unit. I think the purpose of the dance troupe is to showcase the hard work and practice involved to create a cohesive show that the public can enjoy. This can only be accomplished by devising a dance choreography that matches the music chosen and clearly reveals the great synchronization of the movements. Whatever you do, just make sure you are using your own unique choreography and not simply copying another groups approach.<br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.5in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"> </p> I'll write some more on the topic in the future. In the meantime, if any readers have any comments or things they want to share on the topic please post them here. It would be especially helpful to hear directly from anybody that is a member of a salsa dance troupe here locally in San Diego.John ;-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/08210866354129390018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7598528139420840944.post-45561934966829553822008-04-08T14:12:00.000-07:002008-04-08T14:30:25.031-07:00Los Angeles Salsa Congress coming May 2008!!!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://mysalsacongress.com/"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_AFvgEIH-t2E/R_viwm_4eUI/AAAAAAAAATs/c8UbP9avP1s/s400/10th_annual_los_angeles_salsa_congress.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186988720577345858" border="0" /></a><br />Coming soon to the Los Angeles area (specifically the LAX Radisson) is the <a href="http://mysalsacongress.com/">2008 Los Angeles Salsa Congress</a>.<br /><br />Similar to the San Diego Salsa festival but on a much grander scale, the event will include more Dance Floors, 4 Great Nights of dancing, and of course lots of competitions.<br /> <br /> There is an added bonus this year with Special Musical Guest & Band: <a href="http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8743819374463392509&q=Cheo+Feliciano&total=250&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0">Cheo Feliciano</a> & New Swing Sextet doing a tribute to Joe Cuba & Many More Surprises....<br /> <br />For those of you who have never attended a congress it is a great way to get exposure to lots of different salsa styles and approaches. I thought I'd provide a short overview of some typical types available. Here is a list of types of shoes and their functionality for salsa:<br /><br /><table style="width: 407px; height: 2873px;" align="center" border="1" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="3"><tbody><tr bg="" style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><td style="text-align: left;" colspan="3" height="27"> <br /></td> </tr> <tr bg="" style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> <td style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" valign="top"><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style=";font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><strong>Character Shoes</strong></span><br /></div><span style=";font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><strong></strong></span></div><span style=";font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><strong> </strong>for ladies </span></td> <td style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" valign="top"><img src="http://people.cornell.edu/pages/kpl5/shoe-pics/character03.jpg" height="72" width="100" /></td> <td style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" valign="top"><span style=";font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >A low heel, a modest look. I went out last night for some Tuesday night Salsa at the <a href="http://www.kingkinghollywood.com/">King King </a>on Hollywood Blvd.<br /><br />Located on the <a href="http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/image/s_hollywood-stars-kermit-the-frog.jpg">famous blvd of stars</a>, the King King reminded me of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speakeasy">speak easy</a> establishments of years gone by with its entrance in the back rather than the front. The Asian themed venue, with its concrete floor and red allure can be best described as "gritty." Emphasizing the virtues of "music, love, happiness, and peace", the decor at the King King counterbalanced this starkness to make for a nice venue.<br /><br />The dancing itself had a slow start but dancers started coming in after 11pm. Many of the people who I met did not appear to be salsa dancers at first, especially with their <a href="http://www.enjoyfrance.com/images/stories/world/entertainment/Andy-Warhol.jpg">Andy Warhol</a> looks and different hair styles (I thought this one women's hairdo was going to cause me some damage with all the hair spray spikes she sported.) Most came in casual garb (jeans).<br /><br />Although there was no band, the DJ played some pretty good older salsa songs that I recognized. All in all it was a good night.<br /><br />Special thanks to Karla Long, booking agent/manager at the King King, for the VIP treatment.<br /><br />That's it from Los Angeles. See you all again in San Diego soon!<br /><br />John ;-)John ;-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/08210866354129390018noreply@blogger.com
