Peter Escalante. The Vespers were celebrated by Fr. Sean Finnegan, parish priest to St. Peter's Catholic Church, Shoreham, Sussex, England, who has been visitor to the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego during the past week. Fr. Finnegan was assisted by Fr. Harry Neely, OSA, and Br. Rhone Lillard, an FSSP seminarian and native San Diegan. The Vespers were also attended by Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, Auxiliary of the Diocese of San Diego.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH402qTPgjI/AAAAAAAAAIc/mS81YsIF8pI/s320/Music.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223670731468931634" />
The Vespers featured the use of the Cathedral's 1931 Austin pipe organ dating from the time of the church prior to the present 1943 building, and rarely heard at the moment. The music included a falso bordone "Lucis creator optime" by Victoria, a Magnificat setting by Hernando Franco (c.1585) who in his time was Maestro da Capella at the Mexico City Cathedral, and a Tantum Ergo for organ and unison soprani by John Polhamus (2006), as well as the Byrd "Ave Verum" as a motet at exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH41R9cVa_I/AAAAAAAAAIk/XxAkNDB2dok/s320/Benediction.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223671200463809522" />
While not without complications arising from unforseen conflicts in scheduling with the various parishes used during Oratory Week, the overall event must be accounted far more successful than the mere sum of its parts. This was a superb opportunity for the Brothers to experience an entire week of solemn liturgy in both forms. Low masses in the Extradorinary Form were said on on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday at St. Anne's, and Votive Missa Cantata in the Ordinary Form was sung on Saturday at St. John the Evangelist in Latin, ad Orientem, with chant propers and ordinary provided by the Brothers. Fr. Finnegan was able to say a private Tridentine mass on Sunday following the 9:00 mass at Holy Cross.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH41p2ecp2I/AAAAAAAAAIs/IQInfP7OfdA/s320/LadyProcession.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223671610910484322" />
But importantly, and most unusually, all of the available oratories of the week were said in one location or another, including the Oratory of the Passion on Friday afternoon following the Gomez wedding; the Musical Oratory was given publically in St. John the Evangelist on Saturday evening; the Oratory of Sunday Morning was given in the Crypt Chapel at Holy Cross mausoleum prior to the 9:00 mass.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH412o313xI/AAAAAAAAAI0/FD-CTJzfjLE/s320/LadyAltar.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223671830597197586" />
And following the Vespers and recreation, the Oratory of Sunday Afternoon was given in the St. Joseph downstairs hall, attended by His Excellency Bishop Cordileone. Fr. Finnegan's stirring and heartfelt fervorino, given off the cuff and without notes, concerned three topics of great moment to the Brothers, these being regularity of prayer and place, study and mutual education, and charitable works. This message was taken to heart by all present, and will be our focus in months and years to come.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH42Cmc6G4I/AAAAAAAAAI8/toO7oqh8aS0/s320/Recession.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223672036105788290" />
In fine, this week of Oratory and Solemn Liturgy was the fullest and longest sustained manifestation of the Oratorian life which we have yet attained here in our Diocese. We look forward to building on this for the future, and we thank from the bottom of our hearts all who helped to make this past week the meaningful success that it was, including Fr. Finnegan, Bishop Cordileone, Fr. Fambrini, Fr. Dillard, Fr. Escalante, Fr. Neely, Br. Rhone Lillard, Fr. DeFour, Fr. Sczurek O.Praem., Mr. Peter Leparulo, TLM San Diego and its devoted sacristans, Rev. Carla A. Friedrich of the San Diego Swedenborgian Church, and all our musical friends including vocalists Anne-Marie Dicce, Angelica Eclar, Sandra Flores, Anastasia Tilbury, Matt Hall, Erick Rarick and Spencer Velkey, and instrumentalists Salma & Salwa Bachar, and Faith and Nicole Delino. Special thanks are also due to Mr. James Holman, a patron of longstanding, and Miss Santa Pecoraro, who ably committed the event to video for posterity. Again to all of you, our sincere thanks.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH42OlRlmoI/AAAAAAAAAJE/YmEsYbY9PLc/s320/SacristyWithBish.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223672241948301954" />
Let us go forward with the dual maxims of our Holy patron St. Philip Neri:

"Allegramente! Allegramente" - "Be cheerful! Be cheerful! - and, "Brothers, when will we begin to do good?" With these two sayings in our hearts and minds, we cannot go far wrong.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SH42Xs6CqsI/AAAAAAAAAJM/d1cTZgWGwIY/s320/AfterTheExercizes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223672398615849666" />

Deo Gratias!Fratellinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12891286317336749781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593216459258156364.post-61972198317951472962008-07-08T23:06:00.000-07:002008-07-09T11:27:18.552-07:00CAVEAT ALERT: Changes to the Oratory Week Schedule
It is with apologies that the Brothers of the Little Oratory announce two changes to the published schedule of masses for Oratory Week.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Wednesday and Thursday evening masses at St. John the Evangelist have had to be rescheduled to 9:30am Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the following Monday. (2nd from right in photo), who was ordianed on 30th May by Cardinal Castrillón in Lincoln Nebraska, will offer a Solemn High Mass at Mother Angelica's Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, AL on 1 July 2008 at 7:00 a.m. CDT, which will be broadcast live on EWTN “Daily Mass Live.”

In early 2001 Fr McCambridge was a congregant of Holy Cross Chapel TLM congregation, and was one of the original five members of the Chorus Breviarii San Diego Gregorian Chant Schola in February of that year, while still discerning his vocation. Today there are both Chorus Breviarii members and those who have gone on to become Oratorian Seculars as well, who have direct personal memories of their interactions with Father, and even in our form as Brothers of the Little Oratory we have always held him to remain a part of our scholae and community in absentia.

It was difficult losing him from our Oratorian family, but while Fr. McCambridge was becomming a priest, Chorus Breviarii was becomming the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego. With the admission of six new brothers this past January, it was gratifying to sense that while Father was persuing his vocation, we were slowly but surely persuing ours, and achieving a much desired and highly constructive result. Very different, yet both aimed at glorifying God and building up his Church on earth.

Seeing Father McCambridge celebrate mass, even through the television, will be a cause of rejoicing in San Diego. Tu es sacerdos in aeternum. Reginald Defour, C.S.S.P., who celebrated the 44th anniversary of his priestly ordination today. Father was ordained on the Feast of the Queenship of Mary in 1964, and continues to celebrated the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite Monday through Saturday at St. Anne's Church, Sicard Street for the TLM San Diego congregation. Fr Defour has been of enormous support to the Oratorians even since coming to San Diego some five years ago. We have all benefitted from his spiritual guidance and priestly ministry, and hope to continue this relationship well into the future.

Lest there be any further confusion, some people know Fr. as "Rex", which is his nickname, since he was born on the Feast of the Three Kings, the Epiphany.

It is perhaps our sin of omission that, during the entire time we have known him, Father had not mentioned to us the date of his anniversary, so since he had mentioned it in his homily, a plan was quickly hatched, and immediately following mass, Father was fetched from the sacristy and, kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament with cantors John Polhamus and Roberto Lionello, the Te Deum was sung with the congretation in gratitude for his forty-four years of priestly service. We feel rather sure that next year the celebrations will be somewhat more elaborate!

Thanks be to God, Our Lady, and to you Father. Happy Anniversary!Fratellinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12891286317336749781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593216459258156364.post-86645684912103800772008-05-27T18:37:00.000-07:002008-05-27T18:48:50.890-07:00Brothers in our Prayers and General Intentions this PhiliptideThis Philiptide, the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego give particular thanks and offer their prayers for the following brothers and causes:

For our Brother James Cross, who is successfully recovering from a serious illness in London.

For our Brothers Wayne Lam who was with his family in Orange County;

For our Brother Robert Keim currently resident in Kansas;

For our Brother Ashley Paver currently resident in Cincinnatti;

and for our Brother Christopher Velasco currently resident in Arizona;

all of whom could not be with us this year.

For our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI and for all his intentions.

For our friends and benefactors, lay and clerical, living and departed.

For the work we are graciously given to do, and for the ability, patience and strength to do it for the praise of God, and the unity of the Church.

For all these things, we say Deo Gratias!Fratellinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12891286317336749781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593216459258156364.post-31250686560772130212008-05-27T18:22:00.001-07:002008-05-27T18:35:28.073-07:00More Photos from Philipmas '08<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDy0gaV1eqI/AAAAAAAAAHM/RjCKCoshAmY/s320/804-0430_IMG.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205233738253171362" />
Here are a few more views of the activities post-missam. The Brothers of the Little Oratory can be distinguished by their white collars, which are in fact based on the traditional Roman Collar, as seen in the picture of St. Philip at the top of our blog. Dr. Roberto Lionello, also one of the brothers, had already left for the airport by the time we took the group photo. Those not wearing collars are postulants to the secular brotherhood.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDy1saV1erI/AAAAAAAAAHU/qlTrimb5uKE/s320/804-0431_IMG-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205235043923229362" />
Fr. Defour then offered our first class relic of St. Philip for veneration. This relic was saved from the internet by Octavio Dulay some five years ago, during the period when Chorus Breviarii was the only extant group. The Brothers of the Little Oratory had yet to be formally organized, but St. Philip Neri had been taken as our patron Saint from the very beginnings of our group in 2001.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDy2oqV1esI/AAAAAAAAAHc/HycjUn50FyE/s320/804-0432_IMG.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205236079010347714" />Fratellinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12891286317336749781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593216459258156364.post-52778853201396354562008-05-26T15:08:00.001-07:002008-05-26T20:38:38.165-07:00Photos of St. Philip's Day '08 in San DiegoThe Brothers of the Little Oratory observed St. Philip's Eve and Feast day this year according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite this year at St. Anne's Church, Sicard Street, San Diego, through the kind permission of TLM San Diego, who are currently holding weekday masses there.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDtxoKV1eaI/AAAAAAAAAFM/Bw5TWW6s7D8/s320/StAnnesStreetView.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204878729141385634" />
Fr. Rex DeFour, C.S.S.P. was the hebdomadary for the Vespers and Benediction. The congregation numbered approximately thirty (mostly sitting out of frame, towards the rear of the church), and included several longtime congregants of that church, which has for many years been a neigbourhood Chapel of Ease to the Jesuit run Our Lady of Guadalupe parish church some five blocks away. The Secular Oratory in San Diego continues to progress and solidify structurally; we've ranged from St. Margaret's in Oceanside to St. Mary's in El Centro, to London; we've added six new brothers; we've simultanaeously sung and served for Pontifical Requiem Mass; we've sung First Vespers of All Saints, and our eighth consecutive Tenebrae to a congregation of over one hundred. In short, we have continued to expand our liturgical lives, to our benefit and hopefully that of those around us. May these activities be but a shade of things to come.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDt9Y6V1enI/AAAAAAAAAG0/VpDA4jmrQBc/s320/StAnnesRearView.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204891661287914098" />Special thanks are due to Fr. Here are some details from Shawn Tribe at New Liturgical Movement:

"You may be aware that this coming weekend Pope Benedict will visit Savona and Genoa. Sunday morning, he will visit the Shrine of the Madonna della Guardia near Genoa. There, the Archiepiscopal Curia of Genoa will present him with a painting by the Greek artist Giorgio Oikonomoy. It is an oil painting (1,30 x 1,50) which shows Pope Benedict praying before the Madonna of the Oratory of St. Philipp Neri. The picture, according to the artist, "represents the baroque continuity, most noble artistic expression of Genoa"."

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDHHBl77s8I/AAAAAAAAAEM/qsJYA4ZN5Ws/s320/genova3big.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202157874766918594" />
The Oratory of Genoa was founded in 1645, and is currently served by four priests. One wonders just how coincidental it is that the Madonna of the Genoese Oratory was chosen for this depiction, or just what the Oratorian connection is, but whatever it is we are thankful for her prayers and intercession on behalf of our Holy Father Benedict XVI.Fratellinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12891286317336749781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593216459258156364.post-83383269886793427772008-05-19T10:46:00.001-07:002008-05-19T11:11:55.457-07:00Oratorian Tidbits<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/SDHB7l77s6I/AAAAAAAAAD8/xJjh0WqnIQU/s320/NewBrunswick-StPeter%27s.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202152274129564578" />
According to the website of the Confederation of the Oratory, this past 25 March a new Oratory was cononically erected in Vilnius, Lithuania. This is the first Oratory in Lithuania.

Further, the Confederation has amended its list of American Oratories to include a rather nice looking church of St. Peter the Apostle in New Brunswick, New Jersey (pictured right). This brings the total number in the United States to Eight including Rock Hill, N.C., Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Monterey, Pharr, TX., Sparkhill, N.Y., and Philadelphia (Secular Oratory).

With the two to three formative projects which will be more fully elaborated upon in time, as well as the secular oratory of the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego, the Oratory in America seems to be expanding! Sambi's Diagnosis and Prescription for the American Church - An Oratorian Analysis
Identity, Community, and Excellence; remember these words while we extrapolate their importance for the Catholic church in the United States within the Benedictine plan for the reform of the reform. They are from Papal Nuncio Abp. Pietro Sambi, published today from an interview with John Allen. While the whole of the interview is of interest, one paragraph in particular stands out for its vision and concision. It's a three point plan, summarizing the three most important things the Church in the United States needs to succeed, and none of which it currently emphasizes, to it's vast impoverishment. Here, the paragraph from the interview:

John Allen: "How would you analyze the situation facing the Catholic church in the United States?"

Abp. Sambi: "When you are a minority, as Catholics are in this culture, you need three strong principles. The first is a clear identity, a clear sense of what you are and what you want to be. As a minority, if you lack a clear identity, you're like a drop of wine in a glass of water … you'll disappear. The second thing is a strong sense of belonging. I would express it in this way: you need a community, and the community needs you. Whoever walks alone sooner or later will be lost in the desert. Third, when you are a minority, you need a deep commitment to excellence. You must excel in human qualities, in family qualities, in professional qualities, in the qualities of Christian life, in order to be a light for others. If you don't have a sense of excellence, you will be submerged by the majority.

When you have these three qualities -- a clear identity, a sense of belonging, and a sense of excellence -- then you're ready to collaborate with everybody, ready to engage yourself for a better humanity and a better future."

How very concise, both as a diagnosis of the disastrous state of the American church, and as a prescription for remedying its post '60's meltdown. Again the three points:

a) A clear sense of IDENTITY.
b) The commitment of a COMMUNITY.
c) A commitment to EXCELLENCE.

The inadequacy of all three of these aspects in the Post Vatican II American Catholic church is precisely why Pope Benedict is coming here right now, and exactly why Abp. Sambi is voicing them on the Pope's behalf (he may offer them as his own personal analysis, but make no mistake, his own ideas aren't the ones he is paid to elaborate).

For our part, is it any wonder that the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego and members of Chorus Breviarii San Diego identify quite strongly with the BXVI program? We have been articulating and acting upon these same three criteria since 2001. One might say we've been tilling the local soil (insofar as we have been able) for the Benedictine springtime we hoped would come. So how have we among the Brothers and the members responded to and been prompted by these same three essential criteria for meaningful and rewarding Catholic churchmanship?

a) In brief, among the Brothers and members we live by our rites, not our rights. By reanimating the public and musical observances of the traditional office, and by seeking to take a maximal approach to the celebration of the Novus Ordo, and by promoting the traditional liturgy outside of the local indult community (as it then was), we have strengthened our own sense of Catholic IDENTITY through an increased regularity of liturgical life in and out of the sanctuary. We have also benefitted through the effort and practice required to remind others of the identity which was once theirs, and which still is, though they no longer recognize it like the man who saw his reflection in the mirror, then walked away and presently forgot what manner of man he was. Our traditional and traditionalized liturgy reminds us and others of who we have been, are, and will become.

b) Many of us came to be spiritual Sons of St. Philip from a community (the local indult) which was itself a community of outcasts, people who had been basically disowned by the practices of a newly improvised church. Ironically, what we found when we started the liturgical office on our own, was that we found the strength to respond to opportunities to go back into the Diocesan church with these offices and to pursue opportunities to express the Hermeneutic of Continuity even before it was official Papal policy, Deo Gratias. It is from this that our sense both of our own community of Brothers and our ability to contribute to the reclamation and reformation of our own troubled Diocese has grown and continues to grow. COMMUNITY grows through identity, even among diverse groups and faiths; but if you don't know exactly who you are, neither does anyone else around you; without strong identity there can be no true dialogue, no trust, no real community.

c) Do not forget that one definition of the word Solemn is 'Joyful'. Solemnity does not at all imply sorrow or dourness, just as a major key does not equal "happy" and a minor key "sad" no matter how culturally accustomed to such associations we may have become. Solemn means serious, serious task, serious organization, serious JOY, and if the sacraments of the Catholic Church are in fact supernaturally real, stemming from Christ's very Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament, then they demand Solemn treatment as the most important things in our lives, and Solemn rites will not admit anything less than excellence. The majority of the faithful in this country treat their Catholicism as comic book reality, to be purchased cheaply and thrown away when you're done with it. Just look at the cover illustrations on Oregon Catholic Press' publications, and see that we're still mired in the poster-art mentality of the adolescent 1960's. Our rites demand better presentation, or the vast masses of the American Faithful will continue to treat them with the same shallow regard with which they are presented. Our Brotherhood responds to this call to EXCELLENCE, and through error and refinement, has benefitted from the spiritual exercise associated with it.

Identity, Community and Excellence; in brief, these three thrusts of Apb. Sambi's interview are of enormous moment and import for the future of Roman Catholicism in this country. One thing is certain: if such criteria are heeded and sought after in the broader church, the future will surely be a more Catholic one! Ours has been increasingly that since our Brotherhood first commenced.Fratellinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12891286317336749781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593216459258156364.post-729945955111164312008-04-04T12:44:00.001-07:002008-04-04T12:54:07.357-07:00Gregorian Easter Vespers<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_eUH3H8TaTT8/R_aGo8jb3DI/AAAAAAAAADc/ykVQj5YU1xQ/s320/RisenChristFresco.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185480058971348018" />
Traditional Gregorian Vespers for the 4th Sunday of Easter and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be sung on Sunday Afternoon, 20 April 2008 at 3:00pm in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Park Blvd. and Polk Ave. (at the east end of Washington Street).
