How it Works

When you search for stuff online, you might change your search request a few times before you finally find what you are looking for. Seems a bit out there, but nonetheless it is an intriguing experiment. WikiYou is breaking new grounds by taking the Wikipedia direction to the mainstream. You see, if you write a biography on Wikipedia, the sources have to be reliable and verifiable, leaving many regular people in the dark. But with WikiYou, regardless if sources are reliable or verifiable, biographies will get up.

Could this project turn in to a giant mess of spam? Or could it actually work out so that we can have open records and stories for everyone on earth? So far it looks like its runny smoothly with many every day people inputting biographies, and many of their friends and contacts adding to them.

Life without feeds would be one of sifting through thousands of endless stories and visiting website after website for content. Thanks to RSS, our lives have been ever so simplified.

OPML has been the typical approach to combining all RSS feeds into a single file that can be exported and imported into any feed reader. Then along comes RSS Mixer. This online tool lets users combine all favorite feeds into one. The drawback to using this is that you cannot simply upload an OPML file, you have to add multiple feeds. But if you have a few feeds that you wanted to follow no matter where you are, like via a mobile device like an iPhone or a widget embedded in your iGoogle homepage, this is a cool way to go. Users start off by giving a title to their 'Mix', then adding feed URL's into the Mix. When RSS Mixer is complete, users get the option to link to the mix, create an Apple Dashboard widget, create a Web Widget, get an RSS feed for the combined feeds, and launch an iPhone version of the mix.

It's a pretty impressive way to easily mix up RSS feeds, and stay on top of them no matter where you are. Our only wish, give us the chance to upload an OPML file.

Within this community are areas to post properties for sale or others that are of commercial interest in one way or another. You can also create a user profile, find other members to conduct business with, or join in a forums discussion to share thoughts about the industry. The listings seem to be the life blood of this site, and you can leave comments and ratings for each listing. The “pads” listed here have accompanying icons indicating if the property is a case study listing, if it’s looking for partners, if it’s a potential bargain, and if it’s actively for sale. As one would imagine, a large amount of the user interaction takes place around these listings.

Aureos Capital, one of the most experienced private equity groups in Africa, is aiming to raise $400m for a ground-breaking bet on the potential of smaller companies to build businesses spanning the continent, writes Barney Jopson in London.

The group, domiciled in Mauritius, is among a handful of emerging market specialists active in Africa and already runs three funds, dedicated to east, west and southern Africa, which total $140m.

The new pan-African fund is a significant strategic gamble because Aureos is betting on companies' ability to overcome regulatory and physical barriers that have long impeded trade among African countries. As Facebook marches towards a potential IPO, savvy (some might say shameless) entrepreneurs around the globe continue to develop foreign clones of the red-hot social network. Many of these have been around for years, and some have been very successful. Here is a look at 10 of the most profitable copycats so far.

StudiVZ

A Facebook clone for the German market, the founders of StudiVZ have already sold the site for more than $100 million. StudiVZ is nearly identical to Facebook in terms of features, functionality, and interface.

Xiaonei

The largest Facebook clone in China, Xiaonei sold to Oak Pacific Interactive, a Chinese Internet conglomerate, and was merged with another social network called 5Q.

vkontakte.ru

The Russian Facebook makes no attempt to hide the fact that it’s a clone; Vkontakte.ru almost exactly resembles Facebook’s design. Russia is also home to rutube.ru, a popular YouTube clone. Maybe a sign that existing social networks aren’t releasing Russian versions fast enough?

DesiMartini

This Facebook clone is designed for India, and prominently features familiar Facebook features such as profiles, friends, groups, and classifieds. Ironically, the site features an embedded YouTube video on the homepage.

studentSN

Student Social Network is a Facebook clone available in four different countries – Turkey, Russia, Germany, and Great Britain. Its success appears to have been limited, however.

The name roughly translates to the “Pupil Register”, and Schuelerregister.de is another German attempt to copy Facebook. The site is said to be getting a little traction, at least according to Alexa where it has had a 5-digit rank recently.

Feierabend.de

This German clone appears to be more intended for the 50+ set, but is worth noting as it claims more than 100,000 users.

Schueler

Schueler.cc (your “community center”) is yet another German attempt at cloning Facebook, claiming more than 30,000 schools as part of its network. They have changed the look and feel a bit, but it’s still built around academic and regional networks.

StudentFace

Drawing inspiration in both features and name, StudentFace is a social network for the Australian market. They have added a feature similar to Facebook’s News Feed, allowing you “to see which one of your friends have updated their profiles and/or added friends.”

Qiraz

Last but not least, this Turkish Facebook clone also targets student networks. Google Translate wasn’t much help on this one, but the design is clearly Facebook-inspired.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Facebook must be blushing beat red. At this point, most of the clones will have trouble keeping up with Facebook’s rapid feature rollout, but that won’t stop them from trying to bring the basic model of collegiate and regional networks to their home countries. Those who do it well (Xiaonei, StudiVZ) have proven that a well-done copycat can not only be popular, but a viable means to getting rich quickly.

It was inevitable really: Feedburner’s new owner Google has gone ahead and integrated the feed tracking service into its Blogspot/Blogger.com blog platform, enabling one click redirection of Blogger feeds to Feedburner.

In other words: if you want detailed stats on who is reading your Blogger blog, it’s now easy to do. The integration also works with blogger blogs not hosted on the Blogspot domain. Feedburner’s instructions: “log into your Blogger account, select Settings | Site Feed, enter your FeedBurner feed address and click “Save Settings.”

What we’re interested to see: will Feedburner ever be integrated into Google Analytics, creating a comprehensive stats package for blogs and news sites?
