Internet Scavenger Hunt

Students started the day with a Bell Ringer and quiz based off of yesterday's notes. Then the fun began. Students were given 6 interesting questions for which they had to find answers and cite their sources of information. In pairs the students scowered the internet using reference websites to find the answers. The important skill of zeroing in on key terms when searching for information on the internet or databases was explored.

Tomorrow we will be getting our Vocab and then we will begin notes exploring the different regions of Colonial America.

Have to Start Somewhere

Most of the class was spent go over notes regarding the first major settlements/colonies in what is now the United States. These included Roanoke Island, Jamestown, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. We focused on the reasons for each either economic or religious.

Students then completed a chart of the 6 settlements/colonies and a map exercise. These two activities should serve as excellent prepartation for tomorrow's quiz.

Tomorrow we will be doing a quiz on today's notes, getting vocab words, and doing a mobile lab research project on each of the settlements/colonies.

Getting Technical

Today we got a little technical in brought the mobile computer lab in to the classroom. After the school's IT person went over some logistics with the class, each student used a laptop and signed on to a website where SOL review games for the first three units could be played. Everyone enjoyed it and it seemed like a great way to review.

Unit 3 tests where then handed back and gone over.

We then did a small introduction into Unit 4, Colonization of United States.

Tomorrow we will begin notes and lecture on Unit 4.

The Price Is Right

In preparation for our Unit 3 Test tomorrow we went over all the quizzes from the Unit and then played a review game...the Price is Right. The set up was contestants guessed what year something happened and the closest then became a contestant. The contestant either chose to play putt-putt or Plinko. They were given an opportunity to answer 3 review questions with the opportunity to win 3 chances at their game. We had a great time!

The Unit 3 test will be tomorrow. Make sure to study the Study Guide.

Guide for Studying

Since the test was moved back a day we filled the day with completing the Study Guide for the Unit 3 test. While students worked, a video on North American Exploration was played.

All in all it was a rather bland day, but the study guide was finished and tomorrow we will be playing a Price is Right review game.

Sell...Sell...Sell

After doing a Bell Ringer and taking our quiz on the Western African Exploration notes from yesterday students became traders...West African and Portugese traders. Students traded gold, salt, slaves, gold, iron, and cloth in a real live market today. At the end we added it all up to see who the better traders were. Everyone did incredibly well but a few slick businesspeople did end up turning a impressive profit.

Don't forget the upcoming Unit 3 test Thursday. Tomorrow we will be reviewing all day in class.

Tonight is Back to School Night and tomorrow is Student Pictures.

West African Exploration

We started out the day by going over Vocab due today and checking to be sure everyone's interims were signed. There were a lot of notes.

First we went over the cooperation and conflict which occured between Native Americans and European Explorers. After the notes and lectures students drew a picture depicting an example of the cooperation.

We spent the second half of class on the European Exploration where Europe traded with the kingdoms of Mali, Songhai, and Ghana in West Africa with the major traded goods amongst them being salt, slaves, and gold. Students then completed a map exercise pointing out Portugal, Mali, Songhai, and Ghana.

There is a quiz on the West African Exploration notes tomorrow.

Unit 3 Test Thursday!

We're Live in Five

Today we are starting out with a good Bell Ringer for a review before our quiz on explorers we learned about yesterday. After quiz students were split into teams, they were assigned an explorer and wrote a script for a news broadcast covering the assigned information. It was great.

Monday we will start notes on Explorer interaction with Native Americans and vocab given this week is due Monday.
