After dinner at Branson Landing on Lake Taneycomo, we walked the Promenade and marveled at the Christmas trees in the Town Square.

After leaving The Landing, we put some Christmas music in the CD player and made a quick stop for hot chocolate. We then started our driving tour by going up the Red Route (State Highway 248). At the traffic roundabout in front of Skaggs Community Health Center we saw two big lighting displays, a teaser for what was to come.

Continuing on the Red Route, we then went to the Branson Area Festival of Lights Drive Through, a mile-long light display. The entrance to BAFOL is on the Red Route (Shepherd of the Hills Expressway) directly across from Sight & Sound Theater.

After a few hundred yards of lights, you come to the check-in booth, where you pay a per-vehicle admission fee ($10 for family vehicles, $25 for small buses and limos, and $50 for motorcoaches). Don't forget to print out your $2 off Internet coupon before going.

The display can only be viewed from a vehicle (no foot traffic), but cars take their time as they cruise past each display. It took about 20 minutes to go through the display.

After exiting the Festival of Lights and getting our goodie bag, we returned to the Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and turned right onto Highway 76, heading west. It was here we found the Shepherd of the Hills Trail of Lights, a 2 1/2-mile drive-through lighting and figurine display that starts at the main parking lot and winds through the 160-acre Shepherd of the Hills Homestead. We saw lots of lights, as well as animatronic characters and displays. We cranked up the heat and rolled down the window so we could hear the music along the trail.

Admission is $10 per adult and $5 per child, which includes a ride to the top of the Inspiration Tower so you can see the display from above. The whole experience took about 45 minutes.

Leaving Shepherd of the Hills, we headed west on 76 and turned left on Indian Point Road. The Silver Dollar City signs at the turn-off were surrounded with numerous Christmas trees, and we took the new Indian Point bypass to the tip of the peninsula, where we found the Indian Point Enchanted Forest lighting display.

Our third and final drive-through of the night was very colorful and very peaceful. Drivers were asked to dim their headlights, and the roadway was lined with red Christmas lights. Trees were wrapped with white, red and green lights, and several arches spanned the road.

The Indian Point lighting display is free (donations are accepted to help offset the cost) and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Our hot chocolate cups empty, we ended the night with a cruise down The Strip. Like most of the rest of Branson, the streetlights had Christmas decorations, and most of the theaters had impressive lighting and decorations.

It's not difficult to find impressive Christmas displays in Branson... they're practically everywhere. It's truly a wonderful place to experience the holiday season.

Sunset Park and Disc-Golf Course

If you're looking for something fun to do outside but don't have much time, there's always a park nearby in Branson. For today's outing, we thought we'd pick one of Branson's fifteen city parks and give it a visit. Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in town is Sunset Park, less than a mile from historic downtown Branson. Only about a minute walk from neighboring Alexander Park, Sunset Park is host to a 9-hole disc-golf course.

For those unfamiliar with disc-golf, also known as "frisbee" golf, it is a relatively new sport, which is rapidly becoming popular, reaching upwards of 500,000 players or more. Just imagine a regular game of golf, now keep the $75 greens fee, buy a $20 set of discs, leave the fancy clothes and shoes at home, keep the $75 greens fee, and you're ready to play. Best of all, you can even bring the kids along for a game the whole family can enjoy. Disc golf is very similar to traditional ball golf. You tee-off from a tee box, and throw from where your disc lands. Score is kept by counting your throws or "strokes", trying to beat par.

Sunset Park course is a moderately difficult course, with several hazards (trees) and a couple holes near 400 ft long. It also is an excellent course to learn the game on. There is no fee to play, and 9 holes can easily be finished in half an hour. For the adventurous, there is a geocache located very near the course, but finding it can be a challenge.

Once you are done playing, you can cross the road and fish for trout in Lake Taneycomo, or walk a few hundred feet to Alexander Park. Alexander Park is home to two connected baseball fields, hosting everything from tee-ball to little league to soccer games. There also are tennis courts, a picnic pavilion, and a playground.

Lakeside Wilderness Hiking Trail

One of the amazing things about Branson is that you can be near theaters, fine dining and attractions, and just a few yards away you'll find unspoiled wilderness and plenty of outdoors activities.

Nov. 7 was an overcast and crisp fall day, so we decided it would be a good opportunity to take a lunchtime day-hike and get some fresh air. Wanting something nearby and easy to get to, we chose the Lakeside Wilderness Hiking Trail, which begins just a short distance from The Strip. The trail offers some amazing views of Lake Taneycomo and the College of the Ozarks campus.

The Lakeside Wilderness Area is inside Branson's city limits and is maintained by the city, and there's plenty of parking at the trailhead, which is off Fall Creek Road behind Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater.

The first half-mile of the trail is wide and suitable for hikers of any age or ability. There are several benches for taking breaks, and pets on leashes are allowed on this section of the trail. After walking a few moments on this well-worn trail, all we could hear was the rustling of the wind through the trees and it was very easy to forget we were only a few hundred yards from The Strip.

After hiking about a half-mile along the top of the ridge, we came to some wooden steps and the entrance to the Cliffwalk Stairway, the most strenuous portion of the hike. The stairway consists of 315 stone steps that take you down the hillside, where the trail continues and parallels Lake Taneycomo. The steps were built in 1937 and 1938 and have survived remarkably well for seven decades.

The clearing where the stairs start their descent offered some of the best photo opportunities, with a great view of the lake below and of the College of the Ozarks Campus on the horizon. This portion of Lake Taneycomo is relatively undeveloped and is very scenic.

No pets, except for service animals, are permitted on this portion of the trail, and proper hiking shoes really are a requirement. Young children should be accompanied by an adult on this portion of the trail, since there are many places to slip and lose your footing.

The stairs stop about 50 feet above the shoreline, where the trail continues along the base of some nice bluffs. In several places, the trail was wet or muddy, or required some care to navigate. We saw some limited views of the lake through the trees, but the really interesting views on this part of the trail were the caves and wet-weather waterfalls. The trail winds along the lake for about a mile before a sign warns you of a dead-end about a mile ahead. We didn't make it that far, though ... we hiked along the bluff-line for about another half-mile before deciding to turn back.

Here's where the trail gets strenuous and isn't for the faint of heart: climbing back up those 315 stairs. It's a great workout, to be sure, and we took advantage of a rock bench about halfway up the stairway to rest. Back at the top of the ridge, we were hit with a very welcome breeze and quickly covered the half-mile stretch back to the parking lot.

Overall, our hike took about an hour and was a great way to spend a lunch break.

Fall Foliage Driving Tour

Fall Foliage Driving Tour
Distance: 60 miles
Time: 90-120 minutes

I wanted to take a driving tour of the area surrounding Branson to soak in as much of the fall foliage as possible, and the route I took on Oct. 27 didn't disappoint.

The majority of oaks and other hardwood trees were showing a mixture of yellows and golds with some leaves still making the transition from green. This yellow paintbrush across the landscape was interrupted by flashes of rust and red, and then deep greens from the occasional stand of evergreens.

My route made a loop around Branson, and took about an hour and half. Along the way there were many places to stop and take photos, and numerous public-use areas for picnics or walking a pet.

I started my drive at the Branson Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center at Highway 248 (Red Route) and U.S. Highway 65. Leaving the Welcome Center, I turned left onto Highway 248 and followed it to the right at the intersection of Gretna Road. When the "Red Route" turned left at Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, I went straight on Highway 248. The road leaves town quickly and narrows into a two-lane highway, and then climbs a ridge toward Branson Hills Parkway and the Ozark Mountain Highroad. Looking back and out the side window, I saw some great views of the city.

At the intersection of Highway 248 and the Ozark Mountain Highroad (Highway 465), I turned left onto 465 South. The four-lane highway, recognized as a scenic "Missouri Byway," provided some great mountain views with the Shepherd of the Hills observation tower perched on the horizon.

Highway 465 ends at West Highway 76. I exited and headed west on Highway 76 past Indian Point and Silver Dollar City. It was this stretch of highway, with the trees closing in on the roadway, that provided some of the most brilliant golds and vibrant reds, with leaves tumbling across the highway.

In Branson West, I turned left at the stoplight, and then left again onto Highway 13 south. Driving atop the ridge on the road to Kimberling City, I caught the first glimpses of the mountains giving way to Table Rock Lake. Within moments, I was in Kimberling City, where I stopped to grab a cup of coffee and take some pictures of the lake bridge set against the mountains and colorful foliage. The lake was shimmering with reflections of bright sunlight and the light blue sky.

I crossed the Kimberling City Bridge, and as Highway 13 climbed another ridge and continued toward Lampe, the trees seemed to close in on the highway, and I quickly noticed leaves presenting more deep gold, rust and crimson. Along the way, several Bradford Pear trees and maples were showing intense reds.

Passing Dogwood Canyon, I continued on Highway 13 until it dead-ended at Highway 86, where I turned left. The two-lane highway continued along a mountain ridge, and I was able to catch occasional glimpses of mountain valleys painted yellow. Highway 86 descends quickly toward the Long Creek Arm of Table Rock Lake, and much like the view at Kimberling City, I witnessed another breathtaking view of Table Rock Lake with the colorful mountains as a backdrop.

Highway 86 climbed away from the lake, and within a few minutes, I found myself back at U.S. Highway 65. I turned left at the stoplight and headed back to Branson.

View more photos from my driving tour at Flickr.

Tour of Missouri Update

Early last week, the economic impact figures were released for the 2008 Tour of Missouri, which came through Branson on September 10, 2008. In 2007, the weather couldn't have been more perfect for the entire race, however, this years race dealt with some ugly forecasts, and many spectators braved some terrible weather for the start in St. Joseph. Despite the bad timing of the weather, the 2008 Tour of Missouri showed a substantial improvement over the 2007event. Here are some reportings:

Total number of spectators rose by 76,000 to 434,000 for the event as a whole.

The economic impact overall rose $3.6 million to $29.8 million.

72% of the spectators rated the Tour of Missouri more highly than any other professional sporting event they'd been to in the past 12 months.

The website nearly doubled its global reach totaling 139 countries visiting this year.

Next year's Tour will be classified as 2.HC, which is the highest ranking in the US

This year's time trial in Branson was once again a huge success, and this year, was the turning point in the race. Last year's time trial was not as important to the overall outcome due to a huge breakaway pack in stage 2 that could not be made up for in a time trial. This year, the entire podium plus the 4th place finisher at the time trial in Branson predicted precisely the top 4 finishers for the entire tour.

Tour of Missouri Top 4 places (same as time trial)

Christian Vande Velde

Michael Rogers

Svein Tuft

George Hincapie (pictured)

Unfortunately, the future of this event is in jeopardy and relies solely on the outcome of the upcoming election. Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, who played a crucial role in getting the Tour of Missouri here initially, will continue to grow this event year after year as long as the economic impact is favorable. His opponent, however, Sam Page will begrudgingly fulfill the contract to host the Tour of Missouri in 2009, but will not renew the Tour past next year, and the event will cease to exist. On behalf of the Tour of Missouri, Medalist Sports, Lt. Governor Kinder, all the sponsors, and the thousands of volunteers who have ensured the growth of this event into a world-class race in just two years, please show your support of the tour however you feel so inclined. The event attracts thousands of spectators from across the country.

The deadline to apply to enter a band, float or walking unit is Oct. 24, said Kathleen Bullock, tourism development director for the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau.

This event began when a few downtown business owners decided to honor their customers by closing their businesses, setting aside individual endeavors and honoring the story of Christmas.

For those who mourn the commercialism of Christmas, this parade requires all entries to have a Christmas theme-religious or non-religious-and no commercial signage or company logos are allowed. Each entrant is identified with non-commercial banners provided by parade organizers. Prizes are awarded in several categories.

For more information, contact Kathleen Bullock at the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau at 417-334-4084 or kbullock@bransoncvb.com. According to Hudak, most Americans are not giving up vacations altogether, but staying closer to home and looking for vacation deals.

A traveler survey co-authored by the Travel Industry Association and Ypartnership and released in May revealed that, of respondents who stated their plans will change if gas prices continue to rise, the greatest percentage will respond by driving a shorter distance to their vacation destination.

"Branson fits the bill perfectly for what travelers need this year," said Hudak.

The average daily hotel rate in Branson is $75.90, compared with a national tab of $103, according to industry research group Smith Travel. Show tickets in Branson average $29, compared to an average $130 to $150 per ticket for Las Vegas.

In addition, the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce/CVB sponsors a popular "Gas Buster" program to further offset the cost of travel. The program provides visitors who present at least $40 in gas receipts at either of the Chamber's two Welcome Centers with a card worth $50 in discounts.

These factors, combined with recent additions and upgrades to Branson lodging, shopping and attractions, put the city in position to continue to attract growing numbers of travelers. Local tourism leaders project growth for 2008 between 2 and 3 percent over last year's total visitor figure of 8.4 million.

Vacationfun.com attracts 1.85 million user sessions per year and is referenced as "America's leading source of free official travel information." The site enables travelers to research destinations and request information, by mail or electronically, from tourism organizations nationwide. Consumers requested more than 7.8 million visitor guides and brochures through VacationFun.com in 2007.

St. Louis captured the No. 2 destination spot on Vacationfun.com for the first half of 2008, followed by Boston, Savannah, Ga. and San Antonio.

For additional information about these special promotions, Branson's more than 100 live shows, theme parks, lakes, golf courses, family attractions, shopping and other features, or to order a free Branson Vacation Guide, call the Branson/Lakes Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-214-3661 or visit our website at www.explorebranson.com.

Ozark Mountain HighRide

John Daly's Lion's Heart Invitational Golf Tournament

John Daly's Lion's Heart Invitational Golf Tournament has moved to the new course that bears the founder's name. The fall tournament will be held at John Daly's Murder Rock Golf and Country Club, located within the acclaimed Branson Creek Residential Community on September 30th & October 1, 2008. This celebrity filled event moves from Tunica to its new home and will feature a celebrity extravaganza concert that is open to the public. The concert, along with a longest drive contest, will be held at the soon to open Branson Airport on their 7,140 foot runway. While enjoying good food, drinks, a celebrity concert, prizes and a little friendly competition, this event is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Ozark Mountain Family YMCA, and contributes to an annual donation to the John Daly Foundation.

"John Daly is not only a golf legend, but a generous, fun guy to be around, and he will be sure that everyone will have a good time, while raising money for the area kids," said Murder Rock general manager Chris Meade. "We invite the public to come out for our free ice cream party and autograph session from 4-6 PM on Tuesday, September 30th, and then join us to watch the pro-am starting at 8 AM on Wednesday, October 1st." Built on one of the most spectacular settings anywhere, Murder Rock is nestled within Missouri's premier residential community, Branson Creek. Murder Rock Golf Club works with the natural beauty of the Ozarks, blending into the surroundings to preserve the beautiful landscape and natural atmosphere. Chris encourages everyone to "come on out and enjoy some great golf competition among our celebrities and sponsors while enjoying our spectacular views."

Thanks to the generosity of the NEW Branson Airport, slated to open in May of 2009, a longest drive contest will be held throughout the tournament on October 1st on their runway, starting at 10 AM, with the final competition of the top pro-am finalists taking place during the evening concert. The public is also invited to take their own chance to hit a golf ball down the runway for $5/ball or $10/3 balls. When else will you have a chance to see if you can knock a golf ball down an airport runway? You can also see the progress of the airport construction, and see for yourself the 11 million cubic yards of dirt that has been moved on this 1,000 acre plot of land.

The 7:00 PM concert on October 1st will feature various local stars and founding members of the Murder Rock Country Club and will culminate in a special appearance from Samantha Cole, Mike Reno, and Darius Rucker. Concert tickets are on sale for just $10 each, and the public is invited to bring their own seating (but leave their coolers at home). Food and beverage will be available for sale.

Below is a list of the celebrities who have confirmed their attendance (as of August 6, 2008):

Name Background
Terry Ahola US Ski Team
Samantha Cole Solo Recording Artist
John Daly PGA Tour Player
Marshall Faulk NFL-St. Louis Rams
Robert Gamez PGA Tour Player
Vencie Glenn NFL-San Diego Chargers
Ian Gomez Drew Carey Show/Felicity
Clint Howard Apollo 13
Richard Karn Home Improvement/Family Feud
Bernie Kosar NFL-Cleveland Browns
Jack McGee Rescue Me/Crash/21
Mike Reno Loverboy-Lead Singer
Darious Rucker Hootie & the Blowfish-Lead Singer
Sterling Sharpe NFL-Green Bay Packers
Kevin Sorbo Hercules
Jan Stephenson LPGA Tour Player
Kordell Stewart NFL-Pittsburgh Steelers
Art Still NFL-Kansas City Chiefs
Tommy Thayer KISS
Gary Valentine King of Queens
Luke Wilson Actor

According to Talbird Lovan, the Executive Director of the Ozark Mountain Family YMCA, this fundraiser comes at a crucial time for the organization. "We have had a record enrollment in our youth and adult programs this summer. This fall we begin our collaborative program with the Boys and Girls Club making possible the BGC/YMCA Tackle Football program. We also are expanding new Y Home-School and preschool arts programs for area children, and a new before school child care program in Branson starts this fall. We have a number of things going on, and monies raised from this tournament will assist us as we expand these programs while continuing enrollment in our wellness classes in step aerobics, yoga, NIA, Pilates, cycling, martial arts, and the Silver Sneakers program."

Talbird continues, "We are thankful for all of the time and effort going into making this tournament and concert a success, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the sponsors and players who are donating their time and resources to help us meet the needs of our members."

For more information regarding the Lion's Heart Invitational or for tickets to the Celebrity Extravaganza Concert, contact Katie Steele Danner, email: lionsheart@murderrockgolf.com or call (417) 334-7818 ext. 104. On Saturday, August 16 at 2:00 p.m., Silver Dollar City will host the event, which invites the novice and the professional alike.

"This is going to take 200 top spinners to set this record, so the rally call is on," said event organizer Roy Campbell. The only catch, says Campbell, is that participants need to have their own tops, resting assured that on-site lessons are being offered daily at the theme park.

"It wouldn’t be Silver Dollar City if we didn’t have some teaching going right along with the activity," said Campbell, assuring "spinner wannabes" that "Top-throwing Lessons" for skill seekers are now under way daily at the Homestead Barn at Silver Dollar City.

Those wishing to participate must register day of event. Registration will be at Silver Dollar City, Guest Relations, August 16th, from 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. "Then at 2:00 p.m. the anticipated, cheering top spinners and fans will gather on Town Square. We'll say Go -- and they're off!" said Campbell.
To qualify, each spinner will need to have a peg top that is thrown with a string, and be able to spin it for more than 10 seconds. At least 200 string-spun tops must spin for a total of 10 seconds each. Officiators and judges will be on hand, one for approximately every twenty tops.

"The craft of making and spinning tops has been around for hundreds of years, which fits perfectly with Silver Dollar City's 1880s theme," said Campbell. "Interestingly, in this day and age of video games and digital toys, we often see bright smiles from kids and parents or grandparents fiddling with our tops here at the park. We decided there wasn't a better time or place to set this world record!"

Information on the Top Spinning Event, 417-338-3886 or www.silverdollarcity.com
Interviews/Images, 417-338-8210/8207

Branson Chamber Chatter

Motown, Rock 'N Roll Keep Summer Hot

July Celebrity Birthdays:
Dee Dee Hamilton, July 13
Dino Kartsonakis: July 20
Pam Tillis: July 24
Bill Lennon: July 29

Pam Tillis is celebrating a birthday this month. She'll be back in Branson on Sept. 16 at the Welk Resort Theatre with her daddy, Mel Tillis, her brother Mel Tillis, Jr., and her sister, Carrie April Tillis. Branson producer Joe Sullivan is bringing the "Tillis Family Reunion" for the second year with shows through Oct. 25, he says.
Carrie April, who studied theater and opera in college, now lives in New York City and Nashville. She likes to surprise audiences by singing a country song followed by an operatic aria. She reports she's currently at the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown, Penn., where a recent role was Tammy Wynette in "Stand By Your Man – The Tammy Wynette Story." She's got a new CD out called "Roundtrip" that she describes as a blend of country, Americana and bluegrass.
Another birthday girl this month is Dee Dee Hamilton, who sang for some time with The Platters. Dee Dee's currently appearing at the Hot Hits "Motown Downtown" Theatre in historic downtown Branson. She's part of "The Hot Hits Experience" show presented by Rico J., who was a recent guest on the Branson Community Connection, airing at 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays on The Vacation Channel.
Rico J said he used to be a railroad conductor, but always wanted to be a singer. He got his start when he was a child and sang an Elvis song in a talent show. "I liked the cheers of the crowd," he said.
Also in "Hot Hits" is Nedgra Culp, who graduated music studies at Southwest Baptist University. Nedgra drove Wayne Newton crazy while he was in Branson. She sang backup in his show and got better reviews than Newton.
Also in the show is Chico Vega who was with The Drifters and Dee Dee Vega doing a Tina Turner tribute.
A group from the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce recently attended a matinee of Bill Haley's band, The Comets, at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theatre. It's hot rock 'n' roll coming right from the guys who invented the genre. Dave Somerville, the lead singer of The Diamonds opens the show. Remember "Little Darlin'" in 1957? Somerville, who's 75, said he doesn't mind getting older. "The older I get, the better I was," he said.
Also in the show is McKenna Medley, Righteous Brother Bill Medley's 21-year-old daughter, who has a beautiful and powerful voice. According to her MySpace page, she first headlined in Las Vegas when she was 15.
The Titanic Museum Attraction recently welcomed its one-millionth visitor. Owners John Joslyn and Mary Kellogg Joslyn gave prizes and a lifetime museum membership to David and Liz Richey of Warren, Ark., and their four children.
Among the fabulous special events coming up at the attraction, on Aug. 9—during the popular Shepherd Super Summer Cruise—the Liverpool Legends will play in the parking lot from 11:15 p.m. until the midnight parade.

by Kathryn Buckstaff

Branson Area Lakes Can Change Lives

In his five years as a fishing guide on Table Rock Lake, Chris Tetrick has a good record.

"I've still never done a trip where at least one person didn't catch a bass," Tetrick said.

Fishing is one of Branson's many choices for active relaxation that can create lasting memories for vacationers. And sometimes, the magic of Branson's pristine lakes make residents out of those visitors.

This year, fishing will be especially good, said Tetrick, who operates Mid Lakes Guide Service.

"I'd rate it as a very good year," he said. After this spring's rains, the water is less clear than it will be later in the season, so fish tend to feed closer to the surface. Higher lake levels also give fish more habitats closer to shore."

Tetrick is a 28-year-old Branson native who started fishing with his dad at an early age.

"Probably still in diapers," he said.

Now, the lakes are his workplace, and he expects to be especially busy over the long Memorial Day weekend. Many of his clients are couples, a mix of veteran fishers who want help finding the best locations, and novices who want another excuse to be out on the lakes, he said.

But his favorite times are taking out a father and son, he said.

"If the kid catches one, he's so excited," Tetrick said. "It’s fun to see."

Fishing For Supper

Jim Slagter, who works at The Vacation Channel, also began fishing early in life. Ten years ago -after vacationing in Branson for years - his family moved to Branson from Iowa because of the fishing.

"They'd take a pontoon boat out and catch dinner," Slagter said.

Branson is an especially great fishing destination because Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo provide different environments.

"There are very few places I know of that you can go and bass fish and catch trout the same day," Slagter said. "The year-round trout fishing here is incredible."

That diversity was created in 1958 when Table Rock Dam was built. Bass thrive in Table Rock Lake where the water is deep and there are many craggy nooks for spawning.

Below the dam, Lake Taneycomo is fed by the colder water coming from the bottom of Table Rock, making a perfect environment for trout. To create recreation in Lake Taneycomo, the U.S. Corps of Engineers raises and stocks more than 750,000 10-to-12-inch rainbow and brown trout into the lake each year. Visitors can see the trout at various stages of growth at the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, a fun and educational destination for children and adults.

In downtown Branson, visitors may rent equipment and fish along the Taneycomo lakeshore at public docks near Branson Landing, the town's newest shopping, dining and boardwalk attraction. There's also a Bass Pro Shops store there.

"For a woman to go shopping, and a guy to rent a boat down there, it's perfect," Slagter said.

New Life On The Lakes

Bert Lehman, the owner of Artilla Cove Resort on Indian Point, also expects a busy spring season. He is one of several resort owners who send people to Tetrick for their fishing trips.

Lehman and his wife, Gwen, bought the resort on Table Rock Lake in 1995 and moved here from Raleigh, N.C. where he was a business consultant. They've completely remodeled the 10 units, with upgrades including WiFi. They also have a boat dock and rent boats.

In an article in Midwest Living, Artilla Cove was called "cozy and immaculate" with "tasteful touches inside."

The resort also was designated as a "Value Pick" by Arthur Frommer's publication "Branson." Frommer described the "knock-your-socks-off-view" driving down to the resort at the end of the road, and the "beautifully maintained homelike cottages."

A lot of their customers return to the resort year-after-year, and some move to Branson, he said.

Firefighter Finds New Job

One regular guest was Charlie Neubert, who lived in St. Louis County and was a career firefighter. Neubert began as a volunteer firefighter when he was 14 years old, he said. Neubert, now 51, said he and his wife, Marge, started coming to Artilla Cove 20 years ago.

While visiting, he met a volunteer firefighter with the Southern Stone County Fire Protection District. The district is now the fourth largest district in the state with 15 fire stations.

Neubert started volunteering with the district eight years ago during his summer trips to Branson. The couple bought a boat, hauled it down for a few years, but eventually started storing it here. Next, they bought a condominium on Indian Point. Last year, Neubert retired from his job of 30 years and became the district’s full-time fire chief.

Now, the Neuberts own a 30-foot cruiser on Table Rock Lake. Sometimes, St. Louis firefighters come to visit.

"We go out on in a cove, and just throw out the anchor, and relax," he said.

Sometimes they cruise to a lakefront restaurant for dinner. And they may go to Big Cedar Lodge or the Chateau on the Lake Resort for dinner. They also enjoy the annual Fourth of July fireworks display from their boat, and are among the volunteers who organize the big event.

"I've always enjoyed being out on the water," Neubert said. "I'm fortunate. I feel like I'm a kid."

For additional information about Branson, its shows, live entertainment, theme parks, lakes, golf courses, family attractions, shopping and other features, or to order a free Branson Vacation Guide, call the Branson/Lakes Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-214-3661 or visit our website at www.explorebranson.com.

Also check out Branson.net, another great site about Branson.

News Briefs

Dedication for Commercial Street Mural

The public is invited to the dedication of a mural of Branson's Commercial Street circa 1913 at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, on Commercial Street between Main and Pacific Streets in downtown Branson, said Dawn Erickson, executive director of the Downtown Branson Main Street Association. The popular evening gathering place, just off the resort's 10-story atrium lobby, has undergone a $600,000 makeover. The 301-room/suite resort, spa and convention center, located at Table Rock Lake in Branson, are owned and managed by Springfield, Mo.-based John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts, the nation's leading independent builder, developer, owner and manager of upscale, full-service hotels, resorts and suites (www.jqhhotels.com).

To better accommodate the Library Lounge's evening crowd of 200-300 people, John Q. Hammons' in-house interior designer, Juli Russell, focused on maximizing the existing space, capturing the casual elegance of the Chateau, and highlighting the area's remarkable lake and mountain views. A large serving bar with room for three bartenders was created as a focal point. The bar area features two new flat screen televisions along with attractive wine and liquor display storage. The bar design reflects the nostalgia of the Chateau and incorporates beautiful millwork and inlaid embossed leather panels. A storage closet was retooled as a conveniently located restroom. The Library Lounge's new furnishings in warm autumn hues include a mix of lounge and bar-height seating situated in conversational groupings. Window treatments were modified to accentuate the views and natural light, and more lighting was added with the flow of the furniture groupings. Floor and wall coverings were replaced with durable porcelain tile, hardwood and faux paint finishes, producing a polished, elegant look. A stately piano in the room's center facilitates live musical performances, including by Canadian recording artist Eli Barsi, a regular favorite at the Library Lounge.

"John Q. Hammons continues to invest in creating a relaxed, inviting atmosphere at Chateau on the Lake, building on our success over the last decade," said Stephen Marshall, vice president and general manager of Chateau on the Lake for more than 10 years.

Guests Talk
Chateau guests are talking online and in surveys about their exceptional experiences at the resort, leading to formal recognition of the property's high quality services and facility. Complementing its distinction of being the only AAA Four Diamond designated property in Branson, the Chateau on the Lake was included in the just released Expedia Insiders' SelectTM 2008 ranking of the world's best hotels (www.expedia.com/insidersselect), earning a place on the list for a second consecutive year. Representing just 1 percent of all Expedia's selection of nearly 80,000 hotels and resorts, Expedia Insiders' Select is an easy-to-browse list of top hotels delivering excellent service, a great overall experience, and notable value as determined by more than 300,000 qualified reviews written by Expedia travelers worldwide.

"We find it especially rewarding when our guests are so moved by their memorable stays that they share their positive recommendations then exhibited in valued ranking systems such as the Expedia Insiders' Select list," Marshall said.

About Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa & Convention Center

Luxury, old world charm and refined amenities await guests at the Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa & Convention Center, which was designed with the discriminating traveler in mind. A new, innovative Branson promotion offers visitors two free show tickets just for bringing a copy of their stimulus check, or proof of direct deposit, to Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. Since only a copy is required, the checks can still be cashed by some national stores to take advantage of their stimulus plan promotions; thus check recipients have two ways to "cash in" for each tax rebate check.

Shows participating in this promotion include 50's at the Hop, Yakov Smirnoff, Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theatre, The Happy Trails Theater featuring Roy Rogers, Jr., The Baldknobbers, Buck Trent, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, Kirby VanBurch, Grand Country, Jim Stafford, New Shanghai Circus, The Shepherd of the Hills, Magnificent Seven, The Duttons, Island Fire, Hamner Barber Variety Show and many more. For a complete list of shows offering two free tickets and the complete promotion guidelines, you may check out the website at www.explorebranson.com/stimuluscheck.

"Branson is furthering national retail value-added programs, such as those announced by Sears, Lowes and K-Mart, by adding activity and entertainment to a family vacation at no additional cost," said Ross Summers, President/CEO, Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau.

While in Branson, you can enjoy more than 100 live shows offering a variety of Pop, Patriotic, Rock 'n' Roll, Gospel, Motown, Big Band, Irish and Country music, as well as Broadway-style productions, magic, comedy, and acrobatics. There are shows that feature the songs and dances of the '50s, '60s and '70s, and shows that pay tribute to legendary performers such as Red Skelton, Elvis, the Eagles and even The Beatles. Your family will also enjoy the many wonderful attractions in Branson and its close proximity to three pristine lakes with lush, scenic mountain vistas all around. Add to that the newest shoppers' paradise at Branson Landing, Celebration City's brand-new $2 million "Roaring Falls" ride, and the elegant European-style Spa Chateau and you'll find something fun for everyone.

Branson Brings Back 'Gas Buster' Cards

Branson Brings Back "Gas Buster" Cards

Responding to the ever-increasing price of a gallon of gas, the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce/CVB is once again offering visitors a Gas Buster discount card. These aren't just pretty faces with great vocal chops. They're all that plus personality and performance. And they write their own songs!

On Saturday night, March 29, at Branson, Missouri's beautiful Mansion Theatre, twelve outstanding performing songwriters and their groups gathered for the 15th Billboard World Song Contest Awards Show and Performance. They came to the entertainment mecca of the Midwest to prove they're ready for the big-time and to compete for cash prizes. Each was already a category winner in the Billboard World Song Contest. But now they had to step it up a notch and deliver the goods head to head with other equally impressive songwriters across twelve different genres of music. And deliver they did.

When the dust onstage had settled, Mariella Gonzalez and her band, The Mariella Show had danced away with top honors and a $5,000 Grand Prize. Their dazzling and flawless performance of her Latin category winning song, "Flyaway", transcended all genre barriers and brought the thoroughly engaged Mansion crowd to its feet with a roar of approval. Flanked by a hot three piece band and two backup singers, New Yorker Mariella was a dynamo of energy and exuberance that lived up to her superb songwriting.

Runner-up honors went to Rick Huckaby of Nashville. With a casual and confident air of Country cool, Huck, as he likes to be known, backed himself on acoustic guitar and delivered his Country category winning song "Ain't Enough Blacktop" with stunning emotion and clarity. When tears and applause mixed at the end of the song, Rick had sealed the deal. He took home $1,500 for pouring his soul into it.

Soulflege', led by rapper Derrick Ashong, took the next award and $1,000 for what can only be described as a mesmerizing performance of communication, life affirmation, and outstanding harmony. Soulflege's Rap category song, "From the Soul", indeed flowed from their soul and into the hearts and soul of the audience. Their ability to connect at every level was undeniable. Ashong's personal magnetism is off the charts.

Terrestrial and internet radio personality and concert promoter extraordinaire, Davit Souders emceed and gave the night a perfectly mixed blend of gravity, humor and discovery. Souders has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry and could not hide his admiration as each act reached deep inside themselves to deliver breakthrough performances. "I was completely amazed by the level of talent and they all certainly rose to the occasion of the event, which just reaffirmed to myself and everyone present why they are Billboard World Song Contest Winners."

The judging panel of industry impresarios which included talent buyers, a hit songwriter and founders of a top music industry conference had the toughest job in the house as every act was extraordinary and the talent margin between them very slim.

The show kicked off in high gear as Portland, Oregon's keyboard extraordinaire, Robert O'Hearn and his wife Wendy set the bar extremely high with their soaring performance of their World category winning song, "Lost Sons of Erin", co-written with Australian poet Paul McCann. Next came the Pop category band "Specimen" with leader Matt Gorny exuding star power to match any major act. They were there in place of Pop act Joel Plaskett who was unable to attend. Specimen's song, "Do U Damage" was perfectly crafted Pop and Gorny's performance indicates a bright future.

Dance category winner, Alyson was next and brought the moves to her song "Here With Me" to life. Already making waves in the California dance music scene, Alyson appears to be a star to watch. Then Americana winner Jared Scharff and the Royals took the stage. And made it their own. Scharff recently became a member of the Saturday Night Live house band and showed why he is in such high demand. Their song "Bedroom Eyes" could shake radio up.

Listen up, Hollywood! If you ever remake a James Coburn style spy movie, i.e. 'Our Man Flint' get DBC to do the soundtrack (or any other soundtrack for that matter). This fresh production team of DJ Boom and Scotty Beam with the gorgeous Victoria Patchen on flawless vocals scorched the image of 60's spy caper/ beach flick right into their Electronica/Soundtrack song "Back To You".

Then lightening struck in the form of Mariella Gonzalez and her band The Mariella Show. Her song, "Flyaway" was hands down winner in the Latin category of the song contest, which chooses songs by their composition, form and structure, melody, lyrical impact and mass appeal. But no one could have predicted the performance that would burst forth from the stage from their very first note. With a tight three piece band (which adds horns and percussion when closer to home), tight harmonies and tight choreography with her backup singers, Mariella penetrated deeply into the sacred territory of diva royalty without ever losing her own unique and deeply appealing identity.

Derrick Ashong and Soulflege' brought their song "From The Soul" quite literally. There is 'something' about Rap category winner Derrick Ashong that makes you want to be in his presence. Bandmates Jonathan Gramling and Kelley Nicole Johnson exude that same 'something'. Whatever 'it' is, they can project it out into an audience. Their lyrics are worldly, intelligent and concise…realistic yet hopeful. Their harmonies have a blended 'oneness" about them. Soulflege' gives you the distinct impression that everything will indeed be alright.

Jazz winner Alyse Black brought her song "Stood For Stand For" into the realm of instant classic with smooth delivery and dynamic presence. Strikingly pretty with a voice to match, her recent move to Austin, Texas would mean the Lone Star State isn"t so 'lone' anymore. The Contemporary Christian/Gospel category was well represented by Carmen Calhoun and her song "Dare 2 Be". This is also a song that transcends boundaries and defies genre limits. Appealing in every way, "Dare 2 Be" is a song that instills hope. Carmen's strong, soulful, angelic voice made the message ring true.

R&B/Blues winner Leah Tysse and her smoking hot band charged through her original "You Don't Scare Me" with impressive authority. It was a lesson in the Blues, as they say; and a fine one at that. Her voice, her songs and her band are making huge strides in their state of California and beyond. DO NOT miss this girl when their bus rolls into your town.

By the time Country winner Rick Huckaby took the stage with just his guitar in hand, it would be hard to imagine how anybody could top the dizzying array of dazzling performances that had gone before. But "Huck" just let the astounding strength of "Not Enough Blacktop" do the talking. Of course it didn't hurt that he comes across as the ideal blend of what you like best about Alan Jackson and George Straight, except with his own sure and solid voice. There is star written all over Rick Huckaby, but he says you can just call him Huck.

The Jimi Anderson Band closed the show and proved that Rock and Roll is alive and doing very well. And it will continue doing well if their song "Another Way to Run" is a harbinger of where Rock is headed. The song carries broad appeal essential to reaching mass audiences and Jimi's band delivered its message with authority and confidence. If you want rock music that moves you, seek out this rising star.

After the performances all the bands gathered onstage for the scores to be tallied and awards to be handed out. Billboard Song Contest director Mark Furnas states, "In all my years around music and theatre, this was the most talent on one stage, at one show, I've ever seen. We choose the winning songs in this contest without ever knowing who's behind them. Then the discovery process starts and we end up with a show like this that I would put up against anyone, anywhere, any time. These are the most talented performing singer/songwriters you can find."

The event was sponsored by The Mansion Entertainment and Media, The City Of Branson and Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, and produced by Billboard World Song Contest.

John Q. The hotel is expected to excel within the thriving travel destination of Branson, renowned for its extensive live entertainment, theme parks, golf and fishing/camping outdoor recreation, which attracted approximately 8.4 million visitors in 2007 (Branson Chamber of Commerce and CVB).

The hotel will join Mr. Hammons' 13 existing properties in Missouri as well as two previously announced for development in the state, including the luxurious, 12-story, 320-room/suite Chateau on Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach and another property in Springfield.
