If you are a jazz fan, as I am, you know that flatted fifths are at the core of bebop. Just listen to recordings by Bird and/or Dizzy during the mid- and late-1940s (and beyond). Chuck began doing this show in 1970.

Anyone who loves old-time radio, as I do, loves Chuck's show. And, thanks to the Internet, old-time radio fans everywhere have been able to listen to Chuck's show beginning on the Tuesday after it aired for the following week by visiting Chuck's online Nostalgia Digest.

Chuck Schaden
A few years ago, I discovered I could hear "Those Were the Days" online. What a treat! I loved the Chicago references. Everyone brought back warm memories to me. And I loved hearing the old radio shows. Born in 1940, I heard so many of them on the radio when I was a boy.

My favorites were Sky King, The Lone Ranger, and Gangbusters. I also liked Your Hit Parade on Saturday nights. I also remember my mother and my aunt Dorothea, who lived with us, listening to the soaps every weekday at noontime. My mother's favorite was The Romance of Helen Trent.

In recent years, Chuck's Those Were the Days has aired on WDCB-FM in Chicago from 1 to 5 PM every Saturday. Now 75, Chuck has decided to retire. After all, 39 years has been a long run!

Chuck has given me his kind permission to feature his last broadcast, which aired on Saturday, June 27th.

The show continues with a new producer and host, Steve Darnall. And it wouldn't surprise me if Chuck returns to host Those Were the Days once in a great while.

George Spink
Moderator - The Flatted Fifth
Los Angeles, California
Email Me

Who Are Our Enemies?

I followed a link a friend posted on Twitter. Peanuts gang.

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash"data="http://tuxjunction.net/audio/player.swf" id="audioplayer318" height="24" width="290"><br Jennifer Beals were "My Bodyguard" (1980), parts of which were filmed near my home, Kennelly Square, in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood, and "Flashdance" (1983), which made her a superstar. A Chicago native, Beals graduated from Frances W. Parker, a private school about a mile north of Kennelly Square, and then received a B.A. in American Literature at Yale University in 1987.

In recent years, Beals has starred on Showtime's "The L-Word." She has now made about 50 movies. Wow!

Jessica Biel, younger than Beals, also has appeared in a number of films, and recently in "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" (2007) and "Next" (2007). She was born in Ely, Minnesota and has lived in Texas, Connecticut, and Woodstock, Illinois before finally settling in Boulder, Colorado, which she calls home.

Biel was educated by a private tutor on set of "7th Heaven," but attended mainstream school for her last year of high school. She graduated from the exclusive Lycée Français de Los Angeles in Los Angeles. In fall 2000, she enrolled at Tufts University in Massachusetts, took classes there for three semesters, but left to return to work on "7th Heaven" full-time. She has said that she would like to return to college someday and complete her degree.
<img width='1' height='1' Month

I hope you joined big band fans everywhere, including yours truly, in watching "Big Bands in the Movies" on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on Wednesday nights in July. What an incredible selection of big band films!

Personally, I enjoyed them all, even a couple that weren't so hot, like "The Gene Krupa Story" with Sal Mineo terribly miscast as the legendary drummer. Even the Krupa story had a few good moments, especially the end. No, I'm not being sarcastic. The last number showed Tommy Dorsey's orchestra with both its regular drummer, played by Shelly Manne, and Gene Krupa, played by Mineo, both playing with the band. Mineo went through his wimpy moves, but Shelly Manne -- what a drummer!

There is one scene in "The Benny Goodman Story" I always enjoy seeing -- when the band plays "Sing, Sing, Sing" in Carnegie Hall on January 16, 1938. This is an electrifying moment in big band history, and the movie captures it beautifully.

Let's listen to Benny talk about it:

Incredible!

George Spink
The Flatted Fifth

TCM Begins Big Band Month Tonight

Just a reminder: Turner Classic Movies (TCM) begins its Wednesday series of big band movies and shorts tonight -- 5PM Pacific, 8 PM Eastern.

The films and shorts will be shown every Wednesday in July. There were about 5,000 students at Morton and 1,200 in our graduating class, one of the largest high schools in the United States. Juniors and seniors went to school in the morning, freshmen and sophomores in the afternoon. I liked the split-shift because it enabled me to work from 1-to-5 PM at the nearby Western Electric plant.

In September 1958, Morton West opened in Berwyn, just west of Cicero. Morton West and Morton East (in Cicero) each had about 2,500 students. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu, is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

B. NEVER HEARD CREATION EXPLAINED THIS WAY BEFORE!!!

One of the many FW: FW: FW: "pass alongs" I receive every week. This one is far better than most. I don't know who wrote it. -- George

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?"

And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some sprinkles." And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled.

And God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 6 to size 14.

So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.

God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof.

God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it "Angel Food Cake," and said, "It is good." Satan then created chocolate cake and named it "Devil's Food."

God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light and gained pounds.

Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them. And Man gained pounds.

God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and its 99-cent double cheeseburger. Then said, "You want fries with that?" And Man replied, "Yes! And super size them!" And Satan said, "It is good." And Man went into cardiac arrest.

God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.

Then Satan created HMOs.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Colonel Robert R. It has captured the hearts of generations of readers around the country because the Trib wisely syndicated it. Until recently.

In 2002, the Trib stopped printing "Injun Summer" on the cover of its Sunday magazine supplement. Why? Because the new generation of Tribune editors felt that "Injun Summer" offended Native Americans. Can you believe it!

Now, I was born and raised in Chicago, so quite a few slang expressions came to mind when I first read about this in 2003. I wrote a letter to the Trib complaining about this. To my surprise, I received a reply saying Trib editors felt that "Injun Summer" offended Native Americans.

Give me a break!

Being politically correct is one thing. But being stupid is another.

Colonel Robert R. McCormick, the guiding force behind the Chicago Tribune for the first part of the 20th Century, must have rolled over in his grave at Cantigny! If Colonel McCormick were alive today, he would never have allowed this to happen. Not in a million years! But he had guts, which is a helluva lot more than I can say for the Trib's current editors.

George Spink
Los Angeles
Email Me

Southern California Is Ablaze

I was working on my blogs and web sites this morning, visiting GretaWire and the Fox News web site. When I visited Jamie Colby's blog about 11:45 AM (PDT), I learned for the first time that once again Southern California is ablaze. Adam Housley, a Los Angeles-based Fox News reporter, reported live from Malibu for hours on end and managed to find time to blog about it on his Housley in the House.

Fortunately for me, I live on the westside of Los Angeles about two miles east of Venice Beach and the Pacific Ocean. But I know the entire area very well. I have been to Malibu many times. Each time, I have been amazed that an alternate route to Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) has never been built.

In the early 1990s, there was a lot of talk about building an alternate, wider PCH above the ocean along the coastline. That proposal was killed by environmentalists. I guess they feel it is better to let Malibu burn and people die.

On Friday, my roommate and I drove down to Tijuana. As we passed through the San Diego area, I remembered the devastating forest fire that ravaged that area four years ago.

On normal days, a ride along PCH is quite beautiful between 10 AM and 3 PM. Morning and afternoon rush hours often turn PCH into a parking lot.

Despite devastating forest fires in Malibu almost every October, people who can afford it are willing to spend millions of dollars on Malibu homes.

I remember the forest fire that hit Santa Barbara in June 1990. I was visiting my aunt. She lived along San Marcos Pass Road about a quarter of a mile north of Highway 101, at the bottom of the foothills. The forest fire started a couple of miles above where she lived, rushed down, missed the subdivision where my aunt lived, and then leap-frogged across 101 and burned a swath through the Hope Ranch area.

That fire destroyed about 600 homes in Santa Barbara and killed several people. When we heard the fire was racing down the foothills toward my aunt's home, my cousins and I could not persuade her to leave her home. Finally, as the fire came within a couple of blocks of her home, she agreed to go with my cousins and me to her brother's home close to the ocean. The forest fire leapfrogged past her subdivision, sparing its houses, but burning many places nearby.

That experience taught me that forest fires move fast and are deadly. The best thing you can do is get out quickly and head for a safe place.

George Spink
Los Angeles, California
Email Me
