The City of Pelham has released the arrangements for Officer Davis.

Arrangements are as follows:

Visitation and viewing will be held on Monday, December 7th, from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Church at Brook Hills.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 8th, at 11:00AM at Church at Brook Hills.

Pelham police officer killed in late night shooting

BIRMINGHAM, AL(WBRC)- A Pelham police officer was shot and killed while on duty on Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 12:00 a.m. Friday on I65 North between Exits 242 and 243.

The officer was taken by ambulance to UAB hospital with a police escort. The officer's name has not been released.

A white male has been taken into custody and will be named once formal charges have been filed.

Police say the suspect drove away erratically and dumped his gold Acura in the Inglenook community. He was caught by police in Hoover at exit 262 on U.S. 31 while in a truck.

There was a second person taken in for questioning, but it is currently unclear what their role has been.

Pelham Police Officer Shot and Killed

Pelham Police are mourning the loss of one of their own after a routine traffic stop turns deadly early Friday morning. Officials are not yet releasing the name of the officer. A suspect is in custody. I-65 is now reopened to traffic. This is what the Pelham Police Department's press release reads:

"On Thursday, Dec 3, at 2350 hours, a Pelham Police Officer was shot and fatally wounded during a traffic stop on I-65 in Pelham. The Officer's name will be withheld until all relatives have been notified. The incident is being investigated as a Murder of a Police Officer. A white male is in custody in connection to the death. The individual will be named once the formal charges have been filed. The investigation continues at this time and additional information will be released when appropriate to the investigation. The Pelham Police Department would like to thank all surrounding City, County, State and Federal Agencies who assisted in this investigation. The fine men and women of the Pelham Police Department request your support and prayers for the family of our fallen Officer."

Pelham Police Officer Killed Overnight

Pelham, Ala. - A Pelham police officer has died after being shot overnight.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was conducting a traffic stop along the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near milemarker 243. The highway was shut down in both directions for several hours and remained close at the start of morning rush-hour.

Authorities removed the officer's patrol car from the side of the highway around 6:20 a.m. Friday.

Hoover Police took two people into custody in connection with the shooting around 1:30 Friday morning. Authorities also found a suspect vehicle, a silver Acura TL, near 43rd Avenue North and Inglenook Street in Birmingham.

Pelham police say the white male taken into custody will be identified after formal charges have been fired. Right now the shooting is being investigated as a murder of a police officer.

Lifesaver helicopter had been dispatched to the shooting scene in Pelham moments after the gunfire, but the officer was taken by ambulance to UAB hospital with a police escort. Authorities confirmed shortly after 6:00 a.m. that the officer had died.

Right now, there is no word on the nature of the traffic stop that led to the shooting. The traffic stop took place in a stretch of highway that is undergoing major construction.

AL Governor Signs Proclamation for FDNY Firefighters

Governor Riley Commends New York City Firefighters for Bringing Toys to Children of Gulf Coast

MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley has signed a proclamation commending 32 New York City firefighters for delivering toys to children of Alabama and Mississippi.

The firefighters are expected to arrive in Daphne on Thursday and distribute toys in the Bayou La Batre area on Friday.

After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, a group of New York City Firefighters came to Alabama and Mississippi to deliver vital supplies to those in need. What started out as a mission to help people recover from the hurricane has now become a new holiday tradition that eases the burden for those less fortunate.

“This group of firefighters return to Alabama year after year to spread goodwill and Christmas cheer to children along the Gulf Coast,” said Governor Riley. “We all witnessed their courage and bravery during September 11 and they are continuing to set a fine example of service. Because of their efforts, Christmas will be a little brighter for so many children across the Gulf Coast. I want to thank them and let them know that Alabama appreciates them.”

In the years since Hurricane Katrina, the firefighters have delivered a total of 43 truck loads of supplies, books, toys and other essential items. This year, they will return with eight truckloads for children in the Bayou La Batre area and in Mississippi.

The firefighters work in conjunction with the Stephen Siller Foundation to gather toys in New York City and the Katrina Kids Toys/Mississippi Santa Program to deliver the toys to children on the Gulf Coast.

After delivering toys to Bayou La Batre, the firefighters will then travel to Mississippi and New Orleans.

Tommy Moon, Calera fire chief, dies

Longtime Calera Fire Chief Tommy Moon died Saturday afternoon after a monthlong battle with pneumonia, Calera Mayor George Roy said.

Mr. Moon, 57, was diagnosed with leukemia in May but was declared cancer-free in August. He was hospitalized with pneumonia in September and remained there ever since.

"He was one of the finest, and we'll miss him greatly," Roy said Saturday night.

Mr. Moon had been with the Calera Fire Department for 33 years and served as chief for the past 20.

"The fire department lost a good friend and a great leader," Calera Mayor-elect Jon Graham said. "Our entire community loves him. There will be very big shoes to fill."

City leaders had the American flag at Calera City Hall lowered to half-staff Saturday in memory of Mr. Moon.

During his battle with leukemia, community members and the Fire Department rallied around him and his family. Firefighters cut his grass and held a blood drive in his honor, and two community motorcycle rides were held to raise money for the American Cancer Society in his honor.

Mr. Moon's adult daughter, Shannon Sisco, kept family and friends updated on his condition through the CaringBridge Web site. "Dad went to be with the Good Lord this afternoon about 2:45," she wrote Saturday. "He is celebrating now and no longer suffering. Although we are grieving, we are at peace because we know where he is.

"One thing that I ask is that if you have parents that are living, call them and tell them you love them before you go to bed," Sisco wrote. "You never know when it might be the last time to tell them."

The 2009 IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service was held at September 19, 2009 in Colorado Springs Memorial Park.

The mission of the IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial is to honor the sacrifices made by IAFF members who serve as professional firefighters and emergency medical personnel who have given their lives in the line of duty. Since its creation in 1976, the names of 2,152 fallen IAFF members have been engraved into the Wall of Honor.

Graveside service for Roger Gilmore, age 55, of Alabaster, will be at 12:45 PM, Saturday, October 17, 2009, in Pinelawn Gardens. Officiating the service will be Chaplain Chip Cousins. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:30 to 12:30 PM at Bolton Funeral Home.

Mr. Gilmore passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2009.

He was a retired Lieutenant of the Vestavia Hills Fire Department where he served for 33 years. Roger was a friend to many and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed carpentry, playing his guitar, photography, model railroading, restoring his vintage car and camping.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Thelma Gilmore. He is survived by his wife, Mary Gilmore; brothers, Ronnie (Jan), Richard (Pegi); nieces, Dara, Shelby Jacobs (Jeremy), Heather, Cindy, Claudia; parents-in-law, Clyde and Mary Aycock; his beloved dog, April and a host of other family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shelby County Humane Society or Birmingham Bassett Hound Rescue.

God bless his soul and comfort his family and friends. He will be missed.

Eight years after terrorist attacks killed nearly 3,000 Americans, observances were held throughout the Birmingham area, Alabama and the nation to commemorate that tragic day.

The state's official ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

Birmingham firefighters this morning pulled trucks from their stations, turned on their lights and observed a moment of silence at the exact moments planes struck the two towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and crashed in a Pennsylvania field.

President Barack Obama spoke about the events of Sept. 11 at a ceremony in Virginia.

He said, in part:

"We remember with reverence the lives we lost. We read their names. We press their photos to our hearts. And on this day that marks their death, we recall the beauty and meaning of their lives; men and women and children of every color and every creed, from across our nation and from more than 100 others. They were innocent. Harming no one, they went about their daily lives. Gone in a horrible instant, they now "dwell in the House of the Lord forever."

Shelby Announces $815,021 for Alabama Law Enforcement

Shelby Announces $815,021 for Alabama Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, today announced that the Department of Justice will award a total of $815,021 to law enforcement agencies in four Alabama counties. These grants are awarded through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which provides funding for law enforcement agencies to implement programs that prevent and control crime based on their own identified needs. Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing this funding.

"In many of my 67 county visits each year, district attorneys and law enforcement officers stressed the importance of the Byrne grants," said Shelby. "This underscores my strong belief that the individuals serving on the front lines of our communities each day know best what their departments need to successfully do their jobs. Providing funds directly to our law enforcement officers allows them to control crime based on their own established priorities and is one of the best ways we can support our crime fighters."

Of the $815,021 awarded, the following counties and cities will receive funding:

* Chilton County's sheriff's office will receive $52,199 to purchase a new vehicle to enhance their capability of conducting undercover and surveillance operations to investigate and arrest criminal offenders.

* Cullman County will receive $16,288 to purchase equipment to assist its sheriff's office in covert operations, primarily in the area of narcotics.

* Jefferson County will share $731,334 with the cities of Tarrant, Hoover, Homewood, Fairfield, Birmingham, and Bessemer for technology improvements.

* Monroe County and the City of Monroeville will share $15,200 to purchase a crime scene vehicle and present an education resource vehicle program that will target the growing number of youth drawn to at-risk behavior.
