Obama Flips & Then Flops On "Refined " Iraq War Position

On Thursday in North Dakota, Obama said that "I'll ... continue to refine my policy" on Iraq after an upcoming trip there. With a promise to end the war the central premise of his candidacy, the Obama campaign has struggled over the past two days to push back against Republicans and others who say his recent statement could be a softening or change in policy.

Obama has always said his promise to end the war would require consultations with military commanders and, possibly, flexibility.

"The tactics of how we ensure our troops are safe as we pull out, how we execute the withdrawal, those are things that are all based on facts and conditions," he said. "I am not somebody — unlike George Bush — who is willing to ignore facts on the basis of my preconceived notions."

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said Obama needs to "understand that his words matter."

"We are all absolutely committed to ending this war, but on Thursday Barack Obama's words indicated that he also shared John McCains commitment to securing the peace beforehand," he said.

Comment: First he changes positions on public financing of his campaign, now he plans to "refine" his Iraq withdrawal position. Sounds like the only change we can believe in with Obama is that he will constantly change positions.Perhaps the Obamamessiah should talk to the generals in the field before he takes a position,at least then it would be an informed decision!

A huge operation to crush the 1,200 fighters who remained from a terrorist force once estimated at more than 12,000 began on May 10.

Operation Lion’s Roar, in which the Iraqi army combined forces with the Americans’ 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment, has already resulted in the death of Abu Khalaf, the Al-Qaeda leader, and the capture of more than 1,000 suspects.

In today's Wall Street Journal the article below discusses Senator McCain's position on immigration reform that should satisfy most conservatives:

PIPERSVILLE, Pa. -- Sen. John McCain has tilted his position on immigration to the right, but he continues to be greeted by supporters who want him to take an even tougher line.

At a town-hall meeting at Worth & Company Inc., a woman asked: "Why as an American do I have to push a button to speak English?" The crowd roared with applause.

"I think you struck a nerve," Sen. McCain said.

"I'll tell you, I really get ticked," the woman continued. "You go into Lowe's and it says 'Entrada,' " or entrance.

Sen. McCain gave his standard reply that comprehensive immigration reform, which he pushed for, can't happen until the borders are secure. After that, he said, the nation needs a temporary-worker program "that's truly temporary," and must address the 12 million people in the U.S. illegally.

But he also said that the U.S. should be a welcoming place. "There's a great thing about America and that is that we welcome all cultures from all over the world," he said. "And we love the Hispanic heritage. We love the Irish heritage."

Sen. McCain quickly added: "But English must be learned by everybody." Applause followed.

According to published reports, Sen. Dodd’s special mortgage rate reduces his costs by $75,000 over the 30-year life of the mortgage. Countrywide, once the nation’s largest mortgage lender and the largest lender of sub-prime mortgages, has lost billions of dollars in the mortgage crisis. The unsettling revelations about Sen. San Francisco juvenile probation officials - citing the city's immigrant sanctuary status - are protecting Honduran youths caught dealing crack cocaine from possible federal deportation and have given some offenders a city-paid flight home with carte blanche to return.

The city's practices recently prompted a federal criminal investigation into whether San Francisco has been systematically circumventing U.S. immigration law, according to officials with knowledge of the matter.

City officials say they are trying to balance their obligations under federal and state law with local court orders and San Francisco's policies aimed at protecting the rights of the young immigrants, who they say are often victims of exploitation.

Federal authorities counter that drug kingpins are indeed exploiting the immigrants, but that the city's stance allows them to get away with "gaming the system."

San Francisco juvenile authorities have been grappling for several years with an influx of young Honduran immigrants dealing crack in the Mission District and Tenderloin.

Those who are arrested routinely say they are minors, but police suspect that many are actually adults, living communally in Oakland and other cities at the behest of drug traffickers who claim to be their relatives.

Nonetheless, city authorities have typically accepted the suspects' stories and handled the cases in Juvenile Court, where proceedings are often shielded from public scrutiny.

House Passes AMT Taxpayer Relief Legislation But Includes Other Tax Increases

The Wall Street Journal reported on June 26th that the House of Representatives approved a bill to protect millions of taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax this year.

But the bill, passed on a 233-189 vote, is headed for a brick wall in the Senate, where Republicans are likely to oppose the tax increases it includes.

The bill from House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D., N.Y.) would increase AMT exemptions in 2008, with the aim of sparing 24 million middle-class taxpayers who, without congressional action, will have to pay it. The additional exemptions would reduce federal revenue by $61.6 billion, according to congressional tax estimators.

House Republicans condemned the bill because it includes tax increases on oil and gas companies and private-equity and hedge-fund managers and tightens tax rules on foreign companies that do business in the U.S. They said the bill would raise taxes on these groups permanently in order to pay for a one-year AMT provision.

"Let's not increase taxes on any set of taxpayers, certainly not in this fragile economy," Rep. Jim McCrery (R., La.) said during House debate.

Comment: Once again the democrats are playing their silly game of making it appear that they favor reform of the AMT but then add more tax increases that will only worsen our current economic downturn and is sure to be opposed by Republicans in the Senate.Can't these mindless numb nuts do anything right?
