Sample Sale Report: Surface To Air

Checked out the Surface to Air sample sale after work today and the pickings were so-so. The items I liked best were the buckle ankle boot and the buckle sandals but since they were retailing for $350 they were quite a bit out of reach.

For women there are about 9 racks of clothes that are fairly spaced out. For men only about 3 racks of clothes.

The sale was not overly crowded but a good number of people were looking and as I was leaving another 15 people got off the elevator so I'm anticipating that the fans of Surface to Air will def find their ways to this sale early.

Womenwear:
Footwear $350. Sizes 36-40, mostly 36, 39 and 40 left. Only about a dozen shoes.
Supercute but slighly itchy cardigans and sweaters with knited patterns and $100 Sweaters $75

There wasn't a huge selection only a few outerwear pieces left that are one offs. Mostly sweatshirts/hoodies and tees filled the rack. There was about a 1 rack of bottoms including shorts.

DJ Lani Love Tomorrow Night at Le Poisson Rouge

If you’re around this weekend, you should come by Le Poisson Rouge tomorrow night for some good music and dancing. I’m going to be opening for DJ Morsy & DJ Kestar on the ones and twos. I’m really excited because I’ve been learning how to DJ for the past couple of years and this will be my first gig in the city!

Unlike fashion which has happened in more recent years, my music obsession started at an early age. When I was four, I played the violin, and when I was five, I picked up piano - so Asian. Then in high school, I was in choir for a couple years and blogged about music. Then in college, I hosted a weekly radio show and I was Music & Program Director of Chapman Radio. I really love music and I love being able to share what I love with others, so DJing is the perfect venue for me.

My set starts at 10PM and will be ending around 11, so please come early. I can promise you good music and $3 Rolling Rocks and $5 until midnight. Oh, and no cover! You can read more about the party at here. DJ Morsy & Kestar are awesome. Seriously, it’s always a crazy good dance party.

Interview with Funktional's Jennifer Park

We finally had a chance to catch up with Funktional designer Jennifer Park. After checking out her clothing line back in October, Lani and I seriously fell in L.O.V.E. with so many of the super wearable and trend right pieces by this up and coming LA based designer. Much to our delight her pieces are high in quality, flattering and friendly on the wallet.

Jennifer talks to us about her top 5 picks for Fall, her greatest influence and what's on the plate for Spring 2010. Hope you enjoy :)

SRC: What does Funktional stand for?
JP: Fun funky functional

SRC:When did you know that you wanted to be a designer?
JP: Ever since I was a child I would alter my clothing to look different than others but my true calling was when I bought my first sewing machine in college and started buying vintage clothing and transforming them.
SRC: Who/what has been the greatest influence in your life?
JP: My parents, they have always been supportive and showed me with determination and hard work you can achieve anything.
SRC: If every experience is valuable, how does your background in economics help you in your day to day?
JP: It helps me to make important decisions regarding the business aspect of our company.

SRC: After graduating from FIDM in LA, you worked for several companies. I'm sure you must have learned a lot. What was the most helpful piece of advice or experience that you got in preparing you to launch your own line?
JP: Most helpful experience was always working closely with production from start to finish of a garment. But when having your (own) line there are new obstacle everyday, and I feel I am still learning. Nothing prepares you for all the challenges, until you’ve actually experienced it hands on.
SRC: You have such amazing prices, and unique fabrics! Do you always keep price in mind when you design?
JP: I try not to limit my self when designing but try to think as a consumer as well. We all love to shop but sometimes can’t afford everything we want.
SRC: One of our male readers asked if you plan on launching men’s wear one day. Is it a possibility?
JP: Not in the near future but hopefully one day I can gain the tools to launch a men’s line as well.

SRC: What are your five must have items for fall?
JP: Power shoulder jacket, sequins anything, leather motorcycle jacket, thigh high boots, a great fitting moto denim pant.

SRC: What trends can our readers expect to see more of from Funktional next spring?
JP: Mixture of great fabrics, asymmetrical silhouettes, cutouts, and basics with a twist.

Store Opening: Gap's 1969 Soho Store

I checked out Gap 1969's store opening today, Nylon Magazine hosted the event and had DJ Cassidy and TV/TV performing. It was a fun time with Mojitos and brownies being served :)

Meanwhile this new Soho Location on 538 Broadway was meticulously organized, spacious and bright. According to the sales girl this store difffers as it looks to serve up primarily outerwear and denim. And yes indeed there was denim, an entire wall at that! But they had other merch too including accessories and lots of plaid shirts, chunky sweaters and everything you need to layer with them like circle scarves, henleys and vests.

This store looks def cleaner with a pared down and more focused offering of the regular merch. The silk blouse pictured above gave me more of a J.Crew vibe while everything else felt more rugged Americana.

Surprise shopper? Emmy Rossum who looked vaguely familiar to me as camera crews proceeded to chase her through the store as she perused. The line was around the block by the time I was leaving at 8:45pm.

Preview: Louise Goldin for Topshop

I love that Topshop continues to support young design talent. No exception to this is their recent pairing with London based designer Louise Goldin. The collection is debuting in stores and online on November 14, 2009 (Something to look forward to besides H&M's Jimmy Choo). Louise is a knitwear specialist who was a previous recipient of New Gen funding and also shows in the Topshop show space during London Fashion Week.

Her collection was inspired by Transformers and is meant to transition from day to evening. The collection will retail for £35 for the leggings to £75 for long jumpers (approx $39-$125). What do you think of the pieces? I'm really feeling the leggings and the Top w/ sheer panels.

Inside: Lauren Moffatt Sample Sale

This week is a pretty busy sample sale week! With so many going on, we just wanted to give you a look inside Lauren Moffatt's Sample sale. I got the check out the merch while they were still setting up tonight and I have to tell you that although this isn't the cheapest sale ever the prices are definitely fair and reasonable. So many super cute things! I am especially in love with the Bombers and Skirts!

I loved the grey studded jacket with hood and striped slouchy sleeve jacket! So casual cool!

These bombers are awesome, I picture them looking great with both skinny jeans and skirts! The Love Story Bomber on the right retails for $345 but is $140 at the sale!

The grey dress with asymmetrical collar is def a super fun piece

Deal of the Sale? The super cute Asymmetrical studded coat which retails for $528 was only $150 at the sale! On the right is the ever popular "Chinese New Year" dress.

I don't usually get super impressed with skirts but these architectural shapes and metal hardware details make these skirts stand out.

Def go if you are a size 2-6, but sizes 0, 8 and 10 have some cute styles too. By far the best value in my mind are the coats and bomber jackets (so cute!). The skirts are def more of an investment piece but the unique styling does make them stand out! Keep in mind the sale is cash only on purchases under $200. Happy Shopping!

Yesterday was a wonderful way to end the weekend. The weather was amazing and I got to hang with some of my favorite people. I spent most of the morning outside in Brooklyn with Sandy and later met up with fellow blogger What He Wears for a drink and window shopping in Soho. At dusk I met up with Steven Chu to bike together to Queens for homemade “bo bo hue chay”, Vietnamese spicy vegetarian noodle soup, with Havy and Jessica. It was delicious, and I definitely ate too much.

It’s funny. I brought my jacket around with my all day yesterday, but didn’t end up wearing it - not even at night! It was colder in the evening, like 50s or so, but I worked up such a sweat biking I ended up stripping down to just the tank.

Preview and Interview: Suzie by Suzanna Dai

It's been a while since our interview with friend and jewelry designer Suzie Gallehugh for Suzanna Dai. She just launched a hot new diffusion line, Suzie by Suzanna Dai and I got the chance to preview the pieces a couple weeks ago.

I was super excited for the launch as I love Suzie's jewelry but unfortunately haven't been able to afford any pieces of my own. Perhaps that will change soon :) The diffusion line will retail for $175-200 for necklaces and $65-75 for the earrings. It's hard for me to pick my fave piece but for now I think I'm gonna have to go with the circle necklace pictured above with pewter studs, rhinestones, and brass tube beads.

I thought with the launch of her collection, it would be the perfect time for me to check in with Suzie and see what's been happening since March, about her line, her must buy for Fall and her top 3 NYC things to eat/do. Hope you enjoy!

SRC: Hi Suzie, I'm so glad to have this chance to finally catch up with you. So much has happened since our interview back in March; your pieces were worn on Gossip Girl and featured in InStyle Magazine! What’s been the most exciting part of it all?

SG: I know, a lot has happened - I can’t believe it’s already almost Christmas! I think the coolest part has been that people are starting to recognize my pieces and my line - it’s very exciting.

SRC: I'm in particular excited about your new diffusion line Suzie by Suzanna Dai! What prompted you to start a diffusion line? Suzie by Suzanna Dai seems bolder, chunkier and brighter to me. How do you think it differs from your signature collection?

SG: Well, everyone knows how the economy has been doing, and most people have had to re-adjust their budgets and shopping habits because of it, so it only made sense to offer a diffusion line. The Suzie line still features the same aesthetic, but with a younger vibe...It’s kind of the fun younger sister to the more sophisticated Suzanna Dai line.

SRC: I really feel you've grown so much as a designer with each collection! Has anything in particular spurred your growth or given you new confidence?

SG: It’s very important to me to always maintain my own vision and translate current trends, that I may or may not love, into my own viewpoint, and present them in a way in which I would wear them. I want to be free to explore and create in different ways and not be boxed strictly into a specific category, so my aim is to constantly be evolving. In such a competitive market, I think it is the only way to stay alive.

SRC: Aside from one of your gorgeous statement necklaces, what is one investment piece that every girl needs for her closet this fall?

SG: Obviously, I think a big necklace is neccessary. Other than that, I have been dying for a pair of over-the-knee boots. They look so great.

SRC: You mentioned last interview that your travels were a huge inspiration; do you have any upcoming trips planned?

SG: I have been thinking about going to Russia this summer - St Petersburg and Moscow. I’ve never been, and I took 5 years of Russian in high school and college, so I think it’s high time I go!

SRC: When you're not working what are your top 3 things to do/eat in NYC?

SG: 1) thrift shopping in Brooklyn - I usually go every other month to Beacon’s Closet to trade out clothes and find new projects to work on; 2) LOVE Thai food, so friends and I sometimes meet up at Room Service for dinner; 3) seeing foreign/independent films at the IFC Center, the Angelika, or the Landmark Sunshine.

1. "Heads Will Roll", Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Every time I listen to this track, I want to put on my leather jacket and 4 inch heels. This song is so bad ass. I love that it's kind of eerie and mellow, but still makes me want to do a little shake.

I've always admired Karen O's unique sense of style. It's fun, bold and un-formulaic. I'm loving her dress and the crazy clear puff sleeves in this video. I probably wouldn't wear it in real life, but for a music video, I think it's perfect.

2. "Crystalised (Rory Phillips Remix)", The XX
The XX has been in heavy rotation in my iTunes, and this remix from Rory Phillips is one of the main reasons.

3. "Earthquake", Little Boots
This is and has always been my favorite track from Little Boots. I'm so happy she made it a single! A side note about Ms. Boots, she is so cute and funny; she tagged her video with "not lady gaga". Love!

4. "Something New", The Black Ghosts
Not a new track, but it never seems to get old for me. I listen to this song whenever I need a little pick me up. It's been very helpful for me with brainstorm and work sessions.

5. "Seven (Crookers Remix)", Fever Ray
If you're a fan of The Knife, you'll probably recognize the vocals. It's Karin Dreijer Andersson, one half of The Knife. I was going to post the original track, but keeping the weekend in mind, I decided to post the electro remix from Crookers.

Club Monaco "Hailey Cage Belt"

I was looking at the Club Monaco accessories page when glaring off it comes this heavily inspired by Yves Saint Laurent belt. Yes, the YSL Cage belt and shoes had legions of fans drooling when it came out at the beginning of the year, but Club Monaco did you think that we wouldn't notice your obvious inspiration?

Differences to note, the Club Monaco Version is not Patent, features grommets to lace up and is a shorter 2 tiers. They also perhaps tried to fool us by photographing with the ties up?

The YSL Cage belt is a super shiny patent leather, a more statement making 3 tiers and has longer ties and features metal hook fasteners to lace up the belt.

Does anyone know how much the Club Monaco version is retailing for but the YSL version is now on sale on Net-a-Porter for $198.
