Upcoming Social Function

Keep the evening of Friday 18th September clear in your diaries. The club will be hosting a function like never before!

We've secured the services of comedian Damian Callinan for the evening and are in the process of securing a musical act for the night as well.

The night will begin with a couple of informal bowls activities followed by dinner and the entertainment.

There will be heaps of raffle prizes and auction items to bid on. This is a great opportunity to invite friends and family to the club for a great evening.

Uniform orders - closing 17th July 2009

The list for uniform orders will be taken down on Friday 17th July 2009. This will allow approximately 10 weeks for the order to be filled and ensure you have your items before the beginning of the Pennant season.

Another will not be placed until there are at least 10 items on the next list. Please think carefully about any purchases you may wish to make as the club is not carrying any stock other than a few shirts.

If you can't get to the club to place your order please place it with the President via email ASAP. Invoices will be sent out when the order is placed.

Skills training - week 2

Starting skills training with 6 rinks of bowlers was a great achievement - but we can do better than that.

Everybody that attended last week had a great time and also saw the benefit in training in this way. When you roll-up for 10 ends with your mates you don't get to practice consistency for all of your shots.

Come along to skills training and pit yourself against last weeks results - each week. Build on your results from each week and see your game improve.

Each Tuesday from 7pm. Sessions are 90 minutes long and are structured to help you gain consistency.

Skills training

Beginning tonight (Tuesday 5th May) from 7pm, we will be conducting weekly skills training sessions. These sessions will begin at 7pm sharp and run for 90 minutes. All members are most welcome to attend.

The results from drill will be recorded by you. As we progress you will be able to see how you are improving by checking earlier results.

UTBC 3 Bowl Triples Tournament

This tournament has now been run and won! Congratulations to the team of Robin Southern, Gavin Bransgrove and Helen Robinson.

The tournament had a full compliment of 14 teams and all teams played 3x 12 end matches.

With players coming from near and far - from as near as FTG and as far as Neerim and Esperance - we had a great mix of bowlers.

Many thanks to the band of members who provided a great lunch and also assisted with running the day so smoothly.

And a final thanks to Max Frost for his continued support of the club through C. Max Frost & Associates.

2009/10 Committee Nominations

From this coming Friday (3rd April 2009) nominations will open for ALL positions on the committee for season 2009/10. Positions required are:

Also, at the AGM we will require nominations on the night for:

Sponsorship/Promotions Sub-Committee

If you can't commit to attending the Committee meeting once a month and carrying out any assigned responsibilities maybe you would be more suited a position on a Sub-Committee. Your club needs you to help out.

Results of new bowlers pairs competition

The new bowlers pairs competition was held last night with 10 teams taking to the field.

All teams played 3 games of 8 ends in a 2 bowl pairs format. On completion of the bowls everybody enjoyed a lovely BBQ dinner.

Taking out first prize was Linda Gray and brother Michael.

Second prize went to Liam and Jordan Gray.

Third prize went to Peter Jeffery and his mate Tom.

As you can see it was a Gray family affair!

Thanks to all those who participated, cheered and helped out with the evening (cooking, cleaning, etc).

Watch out for details of the next running of this event o be sure not to miss out.

Glen Waverley 6-a-side success!

Robin Southern, David Jones, Trevor Robertson, Peter Jeffery, Neil Thurling and Michael Walker represented Upwey-Tecoma in the annual Glen Waverley 6-a-side Invitational Medley.

With teams from clubs such as Clayton, MCC, Croydon, Ferntree Gully, Vermont South, Glen Waverely and others, there was any number of teams that could have taken the choccies!

The format of the day is:

Round 1: 1x Fours & 1x Pairs
Round 2: 2x Triples
Round 3: 1x Fours & 1x Pairs (different players in the Pairs)

Round 1 saw Upwey-Tecoma win both matches. The fours got off to a shaky start and were 10-1 to Clayton after a handful of ends. They managed to steady the ship and pile on 17 unanswered shots to win the match 18-10. Great effort. The pair of Trevor Robertson and Robin Southern also won their first match by 7 shots.

Following the first round, all bowlers adjourned for lunch. On resumption the triple of David Jones, Michael Walker and Peter Jeffery took on a triple from Burden Park and were never headed during the match. A 17 shot winning margin to Upwey-Tecoma was the result. Two rinks over Trevor Robertson, Robin Southern and Neil Thurling were slugging it out with a team from MCC. The UTBC side were down early and fought back valiantly to take the lead. Heading into the final end the match was all tied up. MCC took the points on this occasion in a very tight affair.

The final round saw Trevor Robertson, Robin Southern, Neil Thurling and Peter Jeffery take on a formidable Burwood District outfit. UTBC accounted for Burwood on this occasion by 8 shots. Meanwhile in the pairs David Jones and Michael Walker were locking horns with Gary Mitchell and Ted Lidell of Glen Waverley. The match was close early on and the Jones/Walker combination remained focused and came away with another 8 shot win.

An overall margin of 41 shots with 5 wins was enough to take the UTBC side to second place and hence earn the title of runner-up in some very good company.

Well done to the players involved.

**NEWSFLASH** The Group 13 Champion of Champion Singles begins tomorrow (Saturday 28th March 2009) at Glen Waverley. UTBC's own Trevor Robertson will be flying the flag for Upwey-Tecoma against the other Club Champions from Group 13. Feel free to drop into Glen Waverley BC tomorrow and cheer on Trevor. Don't forget...

Do you have a mate or a partner that is interested in the game of lawn bowls? Do you have work mate that has occasionally passed a snide comment about your chosen sport?

Would you like the opportunity to introduce one of these people to the great game and have the chance to win some $$$? Here it is!

I'm going to run a Pairs tournament from 5pm on Sunday evening, 29th March, where one bowler teams up with a non-bowler (mate/partner/colleague) in a game of 2 bowl pairs.

It's a quick format of the game and allows us to run the comp in a single evening culminating in a result. There will be a sausage sizzle dinner and the cost is $15 a head ($30 a team).

To make this a success it requires that bowlers (you) make the effort to find a non-bowler to bring along on the night. It's not a several week commitment - it's a 3-4 hour commitment and includes a BBQ and the chance to win some $$$.

Club Championship Pairs & Minor Singles - Finals results

The final of the Club Championship Pairs and Minor singles was played last night amid on-and-off light rain.

Robin Southern and Gavin Bransgrove took on Trevor Robertson and Col Benson in the 18 end final. The game was neck-and-neck the whole way. At 18 ends the score was 12 all! It doesn't get any tighter. Being drawn at the end of the match meant that the game came down to a one-end shoot-out. Trevor and Col triumphed in the shoot-out to take the 2008/09 Club Championship Pairs title.

Peter Jeffery and Brendon Ford battled it out for the 2008/09 Minor Singles Championship. Both players had a great Pennant season in the lead position and to make the final of this event was testament to their form. Brendon took the honours with a 25-15 win over Peter.

Congratulations to all bowlers participating in these finals.

The Club Championship Pairs Final is to be played on Monday night, 16th March, from 7pm.

As well as coming along to watch your club mates vie for bragging rights (and a trophy!) you can pay for your Presentation Night Dinner to Linda Gray. If you cannot make it on Monday night it is your obligation to make alternative arrangements to pay Linda by no later than Friday 1st May. Prices for a 2 course meal on the night are $20 per adult and $12 per child. Great value and supporting local business.

Remember that with no Pennant and no training at the moment your opportunities to to catch up with club members may be less than you have been used to :)

Divisional Finals - 2nd side

The second side defeated Heidelberg Golf in their Divisional quarter final at Mooroolbark on Saturday. This meant the side progressed to the Divisional Semi-Final against Werribee RSL at Melbourne BC on Sunday.

Werribee RSL was victorious on this occasion and defeated the second side by a margin of 10 shots. This defeat abruptly ended the season for the second side. However, in doing so the second side had already won the Division 6 Section 5 pennant and were semi-finalists in the Divisional play-offs. These are both fantastic results to be proud of. Well done to all involved and the best of luck for success in Division 5 next season.

On a different note, all members who agreed to attending the Presentation Night at the RSL are now required to pay a deposit to Linda Gray to confirm your spot. We have managed to encourage over 50 people to this event and as a result the RSL will give us exclusive use of the dining room. Your assistance in paying for your reservation is appreciated. It promises to be a great night.

Legacy Pairs - Upwey-Tecoma into final 4!

Trevor Robertson and Robin Southern were selected as the Upwey-Tecoma Legacy Pairs representatives for 2009.

This is a straight knockout competition and attracts some very good bowlers.

Robin and Trevor Made the final 16 last week. A successful night last night sees them into the final 4 and will play the semi-final tonight (Wednesday 4th March 2009) at East Malvern RSL. The final will also be played at East Malvern RSL tomorrow night (Thursday 5th March 2009).

Congratulations on your efforts to this point and the best of luck for the remaining matches. Go Tigers!

Finals weekend #1 wash-up

Side 1 - Day One

The top side hosted Glen Eira-McKinnon in the Sectional semi-final. Only having met GEMcK 2 weeks earlier at Joyce Park, and knocking them from 2nd position, the top side knew what they were in for. Of course everybody lifts for a final and we were expecting a tough match.

The whole side got out to an early lead and were never headed. Tom Perry's rink went to the break with a commanding 18-2 lead. The overall lead at the break was in excess of 30 shots.

Glen Eira's captain rallied the troops on the resumption of play and tried to will something on. The home side kept applying the pressure and GEMcK did not have any answers.

The result was a 4 rink, 60 shot win to the top side to ensure promotion and advancing to the Sectional Grand Final the following day - against Pakenham.

Side 1 - Day Two

The top side played Pakenham at Mulgrave Country Club. Like Upwey-Tecoma the previous day, Pakenham had disposed of Berwick in fine fashion - defeating them by more than 40 shots.

The top side were the only side to defeat Pakenham for the entire home and away season. A neutral venue and a chance at taking out the Section meant this was going to be a hard fought match.

The two sides were neck and neck all day. Scores were even or only 1-2 shots difference all day. For most of the day each team held 2 rinks and the competition was fierce.

Coming into the final 10 ends the match was still too close to call. The final 4 ends were all played out on Andrew Walters' rink. With 3 rinks completed, the result came down to this rink. With 3 ends to go there were 6 shots difference. Andrew took a single on the 3rd last end, followed by a 2 on the penultimate end.

Needing 4 for a win on the last end, Andrew had a nest of 3 bowls behind the head awaiting a slight trail of the jack. With his first bowl he pulled up slightly short. The opposition were holding one. The opposition skip put down his second bowl and there was no change. Andrew stepped on the mat and corrected. The entire team held their breath as the bowl clipped the jack and sliced it ever so gently to remain one down. It was a great shot and that one end displayed just how tight the entire match was.

Pakenham won 2 rinks and won by 4 shots (97-93) to win the Section and advance to the Divisional finals next weekend.

Side 2 - Day One

Having taken first place on the Division 6 Section 5 ladder the 2nd side earned the right to a home final. Being unable to fit both sides at home, the 2nd side were hosted by Monbulk to play their final against East Malvern RSL 2.

The side got away to a good start and were also never headed. Going to the break with approximately 30 shots up, they continued to consolidate their lead right up to the finish.

The final result was a 4 rink and 40 shot win to ensure promotion and advance to the Sectional Grand Final at Glen Waverley the following day.

Side 2 - Day Two

Facing Mt Waverley 5 on a neutral grass green at Glen Waverley was to decide the Sectional winner. With both sides evenly matched on this occasion the match was also a neck and neck affair all afternoon. Going to the break slightly down the second side rallied after the tea break and managed to win 3 rinks. An overall 10 shot victory means that this side are the Sectional Champions and now go on to play for the Divisional Pennant. A great effort to all.

PROMOTION FOR BOTH UTBC PENNANT SIDES!

After a massive weekend of Sectional finals both teams earned promotion for next season. The top side will be promoted to Division 2 after an absence of 4 years and the second side will be promoted to Division 5.

Both sides won their sectional semi-finals on Saturday in style. The top side defeated Glen Eira-McKinnon all rinks up and by 60 shots at home to secure promotion. The second side was hosted at Monbulk and defeated East Malvern RSL all rinks and by approximately 40 shots to also seal the deal.

The Sectional Grand Finals were held on Sunday. After a neck and neck battle all day, the top side went down (2 rinks apiece) to Pakenham at Mulgrave CC. This ended the season for the top side. The second side were also involved in a tight match, however they came away with the win over Mt Waverely at Glen Waverley. Great effort by all involved.

The second side has won the sectional pennant and is now in the play-offs for the Division 6 Pennant.

More details of the weekends results will be made available shortly. The venue and opponent for the second side will be made available as soon as the RVBA provides the details.

Round 18 wash-up

The top side almost stole defeat from the jaws of victory. With as many as 3 rinks up during the match, we managed to salvage a 1 rink, 2 shot win on the back of the 14 shot rink win by Andrew Walters, Trevor Robertson, Gavin Bransgrove and Mike Kelly

Round 17 wash-up

Another week on the greens sees all Upwey-Tecoma sides unbeaten again! This is great form heading into the finals.

Side 1

Playing away to Glen Eira McKinnon, this was the first time these two sides had met. The first match was washed out in Round 8. We entered the match sitting at 3rd and Glen Eira-McKinnon sitting 2nd.

It was a close match all day, with 2 rinks apiece looking like the eventual outcome. At the break we were leading by about 5 shots overall and 2 rinks up. One rink was up by more than 15 shots and one was down by about 10 shots.

As the match continued the rink with the biggest margin (Andrew Walters) kept hammering ahead and finished up 24 shots up, while the rink with the biggest deficit (Robin Southern) finished 11 shots down.

Tom Perry's rink was leading by 7 shots playing their 25th end and the opposition were trying to pick up numbers to help the big board. Tom's rink was holding one and the opposition skip failed to convert. Tom tried to draw a second and punched the jack through to go 4 down - still winning the rink by 3 shots. It was still close on the big board.

David Jones was down all day, got to within a shot on the 23rd end, dropped a shot on the 24th to be trailing by 2. On his last end, and the last end of the match, the top side had the victory but only 2 rink wins. Dave crosses over and is holding 5! Dave draws another to be holding 6. The opposition skip drives, ends up narrow in the ditch without hitting anything. Dave draws the 7th. The opposition skip tries to draw to save and pulls up short! Dave's rink gets up by 5 and we get 3 rink wins. Best win of the year from a team perspective - and a great never-say-die attitude from Dave's rink including Geoff Bell, Peter Jeffrey and Stuart Allan.

This win takes the side to 2nd spot and as long as they win next week against Blackburn at home they'll be seeing GEMcK in the first week of the finals at home!

With the 2nd side already securing 1st spot on the ladder they played Glen Waverley 6 at home. A solid 3 rink win further consolidates their spot at the top of ladder and assures them of a spot in the finals.

The surprise loss of the day was that of Col Benson. Col's win/loss record this season is quite enviable. We can all have an off day at the office - and this seemed to be day in Col's rink - going down by 13 shots.

New fridge installed!

A new fridge has been purchased for the bar. The old fridge has been on its' last legs for a few years and a decision was recently taken at the committee to replace it.

Well, this morning the old fridge was removed and the new fridge installed - what a difference - no more grinding noise as background music!
