Pinkies

I know it has been a while since my last post. I ruined the lilies painting. But I didn't let it get me down and jumped right into this piece. But with the fourth and multiple fire works displays I didn't keep a steady work pace on it. Then when I finished pinkies I wasn't happy with it so I stewed on it for a couple of days. Now I have it to an acceptable point and here it is. Enjoy.

I sold my Sendak tribute piece today. I'm on a roll. I sold a painting last show too. Here is a little more work on the latest painting. I'm still not able to get a good photo. I'll have to work on that.

Sorry about the bad photo but you get the idea. I start by adding a thick layer of gesso on the canvas then add texture with my bag of tricks. When the gesso dries I stain it with a burnt sienna/cadmium yellow mixture. Then I start painting.

I am hosting the June Abstract/Contemporary challenge at the wet canvas site. My challenge this month was to create a painting without using a brush or palette knife. There have been some good ones submitted already. Here is mine. I only used a wash cloth, beer bottle and a stick.

The Ridgefield Guild of Artists is having a tribute show for Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild things Are. Members can submit up to three pieces. I did some preliminary sketches tonight.

Here is the latest City Folk piece in all it's glory. I will have to change gears this week. The Ridgefield Guild of Artists is is having a Where the Wild Things Are tribute show. So I am going to make a couple of pieces for that (maybe).

From the begining

Here is the start of another city Folks piece. I started by glueing down a few chunks of news paper. Since my pieces were starting to get too tight I had to mix it up someway. I didn't plan ahead, just glued them down. I move I would regret later. (maybe)

I used a matte medium gel. I also splashed some around on the paper. I thought it might give a cool look to the watercolors. I also addeda little gesso for the same reason, and to tone down the newspaper chunks a little. I then sketched to ladies with a 2B pencil. I normally use a 4H but I wanted the pencil work to show though on this one.

My next step was to add ink drawing with the eyedropper. I couldn't see my pencil line on the newspaper and gave the lady on the left a rather large nose.

This one dragged a little at the end. I was having a bit of trouble getting the hair right. I started to enter the realm of over doing it and called it done.

I take my son to a class in Norwalk on saturdays. I wait around because it is too far to drive home and back. To kill time I bring my sketch book. Here are todays sketches.

I'm pretty heavy on the ink for this one, but it will even out in the end.

On a side bar, my wife took a painting on mine that was hanging in my art room. She wants to hang it in our freshly painted dining room. First thing she said when she took the painting? "Look at all the splattered paint on it" meaning the frame and glass. I wonder how all that got on there?

I went out in the city and took a bunch of reference photos. Here is the first in that series. These people were waiting for the bus so i came up with that very original title :-)

The usual process, ink, watercolor and acrylic on half sheet hot pressed watercolor paper.
