You use your broadband service for several things. Some of these things are VOIP(Voice Over Internet Protocol), Such as Skype or AIM , Download movies or Shows from Itunes store and watch shows also from Hulu or Fancast. Now Let's talk about the math of this.

If we are under this bandwidth cap, we call someone we would be watching our minutes and time talking to whoever we are talk to. If we want to download a movie from Itunes the shows for Itunes are on Average from Itunes around 500 megabytes per show and 700 megabytes for a movie. Now we know it could be bigger or smaller depending on the Graphical textures of the movie. If you want to get a movie in High Def, the download would be around 1.5 gigabytes of space. Now this alone doing the math would add up to 80 tv shows, 50 movies, 26 HD movies. Now if you didn't do anything else with your ISP you would of course be in good shape. Now let's not forget about the streaming TV shows and Movies you can watch from Hulu and Fancast. Now Hulu offers HD clips, they are talking about adding HD movies and other things. I use Hulu and Fancast as my primary way to watch shows legally and not have to worry about using Time Warner. I don't like the idea of having Time Warner try to push this on me so I'd figure I show you just how quickly you would use up the 40 Gigabytes of bandwidth.

Now the way I see it, I don't need Digital Cable, I get all my local cable through the Air and I watch what I want from these other media sources, I feel that I can get all my media through the Internet and decide what is proper to watch and not have to worry about Ratings on the digital cable. I know everything that is broad casted over the air is rated PG-13 and when my kids get old enough, I will not have to worry about that aspect of growing up.

Now what does that mean, I want everyone to Contact Time Warner, and make a statement saying they do not think this cap is fair or right!! You can also Call Time Warner at 212.484.8000 That is their Main HQ, and tell them directly that you are concerned about this Cap and that if they do this you'll find some where else to go. Make a Stand and sound out!!! This is a Campaign to make these Media companies know we have the right to decide what we want and when we want it, we don't have to have there media we can get our media as we want. If we don't do this, there will be no hope for us all!!!

Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-53925990709162417112008-06-04T12:24:00.004-04:002008-06-04T15:26:54.768-04:00Windows Vista Hidden Super Fetch I was talking to a friend last night about Vista. She was talking about speed and reliability, I suggested that she use ReadyBoost. What is Readyboost? It retrieves all the important files and documents that it needs after you start up. Microsoft says:

Windows Vista introduces Windows ReadyBoost, a new concept in adding memory to a system. You can use non-volatile flash memory, such as that on a universal serial bus (USB) flash drive, to improve performance without having to add additional memory "under the hood."
[Via Microsoft]

So by saying you can use a USB for this. All your really doing is using external memory to help augment the internal memory. So you system doesn't have to cache everything on the hard drive. It will speed up the system, I know it does on mine!!

What is Super Fetch?

SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them. Windows Vista also runs background programs, like disk defragmenting and Windows Defender, at low priority so that they can do their job but your work always comes first.
[Via Microsoft]

So now that you know what this is let's talk about how it speeds up your system. Readyboost uses someting like Super Fetch and reads all it can and stores it in memory, the most common programs, the most common applications and keeps it in a memory cache. Oh now here's where it gets interesting. Memory Cache is simply the excess amount of information that can't be used in ram. So this excess information would go to the cache memory directory and create a file for that particular information so it can organize and be ready to launch and speed up the system. In theory, The information that it has organized onto the directory would be easier and quicker to read so as not to use up a lot of file processing. It's like the old saying an apple a days keeps the doctor away. See, Windows is constently looking at what you open up the most and wants to keep those files loaded as much as because it is quicker that way.

So how do I use Readyboost?

This is a simple way to use Readyboost.

Get an USB memory stick preferably twice the size of your memory (You can also use Sd cards if you have an SD reader.)

Put it in the slot

Right Click on the drive

Select Properties

Select Readyboost tab (remember the card or USB device has to be fast enough to use it)

Select use this device

hit Apply, and then Ok

That's it, you've completed the steps to get Readyboost to work . Enjoy

Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-73498720175298107382008-06-02T17:35:00.005-04:002008-06-04T16:05:58.091-04:00Microsoft Can't you get anything Right?I sit here listening to "Windows Weekly 61, Windows 7" and I wanted to talk about what he said and I quote:

Windows Vista was a major release, and Microsoft is positioning Windows 7 as a major release as well. However, the language Microsoft uses to describe the technical underpinnings of the Windows 7 suggest that this product will in fact be a minor release.
[Via Winsupersite]

So My one questions is Windows going to be in fact a new whole system or just an update to Vista!! Here is some other quotes that I've found on the web:

Microsoft clearly are trying to launch Windows 7 as soon as possible, even though many users are only just getting around to upgrading to Windows Vista. I wonder if Windows 7 will be one upgrade too many for some customers?
[Via Windows7.cc]

So let's start talking about this news. Will they be doing the final RC for Windows soon or are they going to wait till next year. It appears that they are going to do something soon but not sure what. They've been tight lipped from the start of windows Vista and have not been releasing anything big about Windows 7, Is this the attempt to hide there disgrace about Vista and how hard they are having to work for Windows 7?

First, there'll be some new, unspecified integration with the Internet "cloud." Windows 7 will have built-in connections with something like Microsoft's "Live Mesh," a Web-based system for sharing and synchronizing folders, learning the online status of friends and family, and syncing mobile devices with your desktop system.

Next, you'll find automated backup, Microsoft's catch-up answer to Apple's Time Machine. This seems obvious from a leaked screen shot of the new Windows Health Center control panel applet in Windows 7.

[Via PcMagazine]

So let's Start talking about what Pc Magazine is talking about "cloud" computing. What they mean by cloud computing is like how you have google mail on your laptop but also on there website to be able to access it anywhere you have internet access. You can have it come in more than one ways and has the ability to keep your notes in Sync with other systems. Now they also are talking about the Apple's Time Machine like backup for Windows 7, I am quite curious how they are going to do that also, they seem to be copying Apple and making it seem like they come up with even more features. Some other points I'd like to make are "Is Windows 7 a threat to Vista or a Complete replacement to Vista?"

PDC 2008 is slated for October 27 to 30 in Los Angeles. (I wonder if it will be right before/after/during the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, also slated for some time next fall, and possibly in Los Angeles.)
[Via Zdnet]

Now here's my thinking on this one that they will have to start developing programs and talk when and what will be involved in Windows 7. They serious can't be thinking it's all about Vista, I haven't seen a shred of evidence to think this Professional Developers Conference is going to be anything but talk about the next Windows 7. I just want to ask Microsoft to get this right this time. I don't want to see another system that has to many bugs for corporate to use. Is Vista a doomed O/S and if so why?Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-38612023287389956072008-05-31T20:07:00.003-04:002008-05-31T20:41:23.351-04:00Turn Vista into a Power Tool!!I've been thinking of some other cool things you can do with Vista and here are some of them!!

Start++ Powertool

As you see, this little program can make command line shortcuts. All you have to do is go to the start menu search bar and type in a shortcut command and it will run a nice little script. It is a real nice shortcuts.

Snipping Tool

If you need something to capture a portion of a screen in vista. You have a nice little capturing program. It's call snipping tool, and it isn't readily available. You can get to it by hitting the start Menu and typing "Snip" in the vista Search bar. It is really nice not to have to download a program for making screen shots.

Super Root Administrator

Now if you're a Linux user your understand the value of this little secret. Vista has a Super Root Administrator available to use but deactivated and if you use this you must be understand this is for people who need to have an Admin Account that can do more than just an Administrator, so Here is how you do it. Type Cmd in the search bar, (star menu), and right click on cmd.exe and run as Admin, then you type this in prompt. "Net user administrator /active:yes" in the command prompt. Now after you activate, you will need to make it unprotected by selecting a password for this after wards. If you want to disable this account you do the same stuff first then this : "Net user administrator /active:no" on the Command line. That will turn it off. I hope this helps you out when you use Vista.Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-27083426613351979282008-05-29T20:54:00.006-04:002008-05-30T03:43:20.609-04:00UAC Discussions and TipsAs many of you know, if you bought Windows Vista you've had this annoying little pop up for User Account Control. It darken}s the screen and only allows you to continue if you select OK or you can always Cancel. I find it waste CPU cycles, and Resources. I've been reading about a program called:

[TweakUAC] -- TweakUAC(TM) is a free software tool that you can use to quickly turn UAC (User Account Control of Windows Vista) on or off, or to make UAC operate in the quiet mode.

This little program lets you make it quite, I've found that quite mode doesn't do me any good because it makes you still have to click 'OK' on a lot of system level programs. Like Regedit.exe, and MsConfig.exe. This can get annoying if you are using you system for more than just day to day routines. I also find that if you use common sense you won't have to have UAC on at all. That's right I have turned my UAC off on windows and have no viruses or problems yet that have been associated with turning it off. I find most of the time people ignore the UAC and gets to used to it to prevent Viruses or Spyware. It's all about getting to used to the UAC and ignoring all the warnings.

If you're like me and want to disable UAC without downloading any programs check out my previous post on how to do it at:

Ways to improve Battery Life in Vista

People also say don't use an Administrator account, Well I've been using an Administrator account for the past year and half. I've had no problems doing it, it's all about how you use your account.

Now if you want to know about security and how to protect yourself you should read my other post:

Some Important programs to prevent yourself from having viruses and Malware!!

This little post talks about ways to prevent viruses and Malware a.k.a. Spyware. I have had great response on that little post. I will be later on this weekend posting ways to use Vista safely. I will put more up later!! Keep watching!!
Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-2621733745256067612008-05-26T11:58:00.006-04:002008-05-26T12:27:08.107-04:00Social Mythmarking on the NetSo I sit here reading about some interesting concepts one totally rock my thought process, making my synapse fire and get me thinking. The article that started this post was:

Is Social Bookmarking worth the trouble? -- A really intriguing little discussion on why we bookmark? I say we have several more like 5 types of internet users. These users come in all shapes and sizes, especially small to big.

These users are:

Propagators -- bloggers, News, Yahoo, Microsoft.

Aggragators -- Social media on the net

Readers -- They just read the post but don't respond

Writers -- Those who like to respond to other post

Money people -- They are in it just for the money!!

So i sit here thinking about all the bookmarking I've done this week and understand one thing. I don't bookmark in the Social networks for myself, I bookmark these sites and areas for other people. It's like I want to share what I've found, sure someone else has found it too but didn't share it. I on the other hand use some very useful Social outlets:

Friendfeed -- This little site is an agragator of sorts to combine several areas into one nice little feed to be able to keep up with what people say and bookmark. They use 36 different sites including Twitter, Lastfm, Digg, and Youtube. Now I'm not saying this is bad, actually it has very nice to find some gold gems in this little social bookmarking media. I've become a better blogger and understand what people are looking for since I have started watching this site.

Twitter -- This is good for shouting out to people what you've done like a new way to say "Hey found this awesome site and you need to check it out" or it also good to communicate with your friends on-line when you've got no internet access and have only a cell phone. I don't like it that much but it allows me some modern comforts.

FeedDemon -- Now if you've read some of my other post this is good for those who like to keep RSS alive and need it. I like it for the luxury of an offline reader. See previous posts about it in detail

Although these are just a small part of what I use in my day to day internet life, I've found them to be very useful in keeping up with technology and it makes my days go buy quicker. I agree on a small amount with his post about how I don't go back to my bookmarks after I've bookmarked them on the social media, that is because I've got other things to do then to go back. There's a ton of stuff out there that I want to learn and to see and don't have time to look back. I would love to hear what others think!! I figured I'd talk about some of the programs that seem to work well with my copy of Vista. Although if you want to use the programs like I do, please install Vista Sp1 before you try these programs. I've got Sp1 installed in this system and have had no problems with the Service Pack or these programs.

RoboForm

So I've had problems Keepass and Windows Vista Prem. I've found this little program that actually does what Keepass does without the trouble of how to install it. I like the management and how well it intergrated into Vista and Firefox. It is also free. Go check it out.

Feedalizr

So you've signed up to Friend Feed and want to get updates on your computer without a browser. So Feedalizr gives you updates and all on Vista without a browser. You use Adobe Air which works well with Vista also.

TwHirl

It also uses Adobe Air and lets you use it with twitter and also works well with Vista. I've had no problems with these programs from installation to running them on Vista.

FeedDemon

This is a great little RSS reader that works well and I've had no major problems with this little reader. This is also a free reader to install and use. It's brought to you by Newsgator.

Pc-Decrapifier

I have used this for my OEM systems with Vista and does extremely well to remove all the useless programs that are loaded into vista when they are shipped. I also find this works well with XP OEM versions also. I've had no problems with this one program even without SP1.

These are just some of the programs that work well with Vista. I hope this helps people to use Vista a lot better.

Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-54471248928076892172008-05-24T17:36:00.005-04:002008-05-24T19:48:11.368-04:00Twitter is breaking down

Man down!
Around 11 am in San Francisco, our main database db006, crashed because of too many connections. They are talking about the the API Project taking to much bandwidth and to much processing power. It's got to be a combination of the two. They are melting and they can't seem to figure out why. Of course they are say they know why, but if they are having this much problems constantly then why can't they fix it. So I've been playing around with FriendFeed to see if it can compare to Twitter. I would love to hear if people are getting mad at Twitter or if they are use Friendfeed more and more often. I see no reason why people will keep accepting twitter if they don't fix these problems really soon. You can easily customize these locations to add or remove locations to best suit your needs. Here is how:

Open a dialog box (either a Save As or Open dialog will work).

Right click on some white space in the locations on the left pane and select Open Favorite Links Folder. The folder: “C:\Users\Your Name\Links” should open.

Add or remove shortcuts as needed.

Your changes should take effect immediately.

Once you take a few minutes to configure your locations, this trick should save you quite a bit of time.

[Via PcMech]

Thought people would like this little tip that I found on PcMech and I wanted to let people know. I've only have to ask, some questions, that have been swimming in my head today. It suddenly came to me, review what I've written and explore some my help posts and see if I can't get even a better blog post going!! I've been so busy with a bunch of areas here are some things to consider:

You Can do more with Steam and a Half!

This is one of my favorite post because it talks about hacking, err better not say that, using the command line for steam and make Half Life 2 more enjoyable. You see I've had problems with IGFX and Half Life 2. So I decided to tell people how to fix it, and People are constantly coming to my blog to read this article.

Wolfenstein:Enemy Territories and Vista saying it Stops responding.

This little Article was those who were having problems with Vista and Enemy Territories. I created this article to also help people play Enemy territory multi-player game. People also come to mine to look at this one. Also it seems to be very popular with people wanting to know how to get some old games to work with Vista.

Some Important programs to prevent yourself from having viruses and Malware!!

So I was getting inspired on this one. People were having problems with this little skype text and some bot trying to trick people into thinking they had a virus. I decided I would write this page to better make people aware of other ways to find out if you had a virus. There are some good tips and suggestions on this one.

Ways to improve Battery Life in Vista

As you can see I've done my research on this one. I've got a laptop with Vista Premium on it and have gotten my battery life to be to be extended to last around 2 1/2 hours. Not all the good but it is really good for those slightly long drives and other such things. I hope people find this as informative as I do.

Skype isn't always safe!!

This One was because of Alertscan on Skype trying to do what other scams do. They want you to install software and malware. So I did a post on this one as well.

I hope you enjoyed these post and soon there will be more. I've been doing some research on Vista SP1 and will have tips and tricks it also. Until Next time. After the jump, let's create a fully-functional desktop-to-go using a simple Windows program and a 1GB or larger thumb drive.

[Via Lifehacker]

I've got to try this, Has anyone else tried this and does it work for you?Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-475394591738446322008-05-16T19:26:00.002-04:002008-05-16T19:37:55.672-04:00Trying New Things!!Ok So I've decided to try some new things out. We had a story about that last November. What is a bit more interesting out of the same study (though, not very surprising) is the news that Comcast has been less than forthright in explaining what it's doing. While Comcast denied any traffic shaping for the longest time, when it finally 'fessed up (just a bit) it said that it only used traffic shaping during peak hours. However, the research suggests otherwise. After testing a bunch of users at various times, this new study found no noticeable difference in blockages based on time.

[Via Techdirt]

I wanted to warn people any ISP could be doing this it's just how much they want to bother doing it. They can do that to almost anything.Laforge129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7408828574529134640.post-75737764965320004312008-05-14T20:03:00.003-04:002008-05-14T20:07:14.137-04:00NBC-Vista copy-protection snafu reminds us why DRM stinks

The serves as a unsettling reminder that broadcasters can give instructions to the software built into DVRs, although they almost never do. Many DVRs and other, similar devices appear to be aware of the content-restriction flags set by broadcasters, even if they're not programmed to "obey" them by default. Still, broadcasters would love to have the power to stop users from recording their shows, watching them later, and most importantly, skipping commercials when they do it.

[Via Arstechnica]

Yes that is right DRM does stink, I found this article to be a great reminder of how unrealistic it is that we should need DRM.
